Can Mosley force Mayweather to fight?

By Jason Kim: There’s little doubt that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to be trying to avoid any heated battles with WBA welterweight Shane Mosley as much as possible this Saturday night in their round bout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather, 33, takes pride in not taking punishment in fights. Some people say that Mayweather purposely picks only opponents that he thinks he can beat to avoid taking punishment.

Well, Mayweather might have finally found an opponent in 38-year-old Mosley that he can’t avoid escaping punishment, because Mosley isn’t a fighter that can be beaten on the cheap. He’s going to be going after Mayweather all night long trying to take his head off with every punch. In the past, Mayweather has done well against fighters that go after. In fact, he seems to relish in being able to pick apart opponents that crowd him the way that Mosley will likely be doing on Saturday night. But then again, Mayweather hasn’t ever faced a fighter with Mosley’s offensive skills.

It remains to be seen whether Mayweather will be able to land his pinpoint punches against Mosley the same way he’s done against his last two opponents Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez. One problem preventing Mayweather from dominating Mosley the way that he did Hatton and Marquez is that Mosley is bigger and faster than those two fighters. Mosley is even better than Mayweather by an inch and is excellent at adapting to changing situations during a fight. Most of Mayweather’s opponents have only had a plan ‘A’ and didn’t have a backup plan to fall back on when Mayweather started to give them problems.

Mosley can do a lot of different things that other fighters can’t. Mosley’s hand speed will allow him to compete with Mayweather in close. And if he does have problems with Mayweather being a faster fighter, Mosley can always crowd Mayweather and shut him down with wrestling on the inside. Unlike Hatton, Mosley is deadly with short punches on the inside and can throw them incredibly fast.

  • Bmack says:

    Mosley will lose via decision
Pacman will lose via knock out
yes I said it Pacman would get knocked out
and that is just how I’m placing that bet.

  • Bmack says:

Shane is a good fighter it’s just that he isn’t better than Floyd.
This fight will be easier for Floyd than what is expected.
Mosely will kinda hit Floyd, and the Mosley fans and Floyd haters would get excited but when seen in slow mo his punches won’t have an effect.
    Anyway Floyd by easy desision

  • DC says:

The free triple header on SHOWTIME Friday night will be better! This PPV will not do 2 million like everyone is predicting. These two guys are way too inactive. Not enough interest. Only phony interest trying to be generated by HBO.

Black athletes have a more developed heel bones which allows them to move faster. All thing being equal they have better physical talent as do some Russian people.

  • tommy says:

RJ.Good points all around. The only way to beat Floyd is with the jab.Throw multiple jabs and step out.eventually Floyd will have to come forward and throw punches. That’s where Shane is fast enough to catch him.Coming in.You make Floyd fight your fight, and you have a chance. You fight Floyds fight and you lose,Period.Whoever wins this fight beats Pacquiao easy….I’ll take Floyd 8 rounds to 4

  • R J Hill says:

I am sorry for more comments, but the question is can Mosley make Mayweatherfight.Of coarse he has to,if he want,s to win.Mayweathers best asset are his reflexes, and ability to see and avoid telegraphed punches. If I were Mosely I would try whatever I had to do to win. We know Flyd Jr. is a master boxer with superior intelect and God given skills. Shane must attack with all he has save none.

  • Anonymous says:

Hatton wanted a MMA ref. He would have been allowed to hug his g@y lover.. Lol.

  • Facts R Back says:

I agree Eli . . . I’ve been wanting this fight for the last 2 years. It will be a good one. I guarantee. I truly believe that Mosely does not have the patience to defeat Mayweather. Everytime someone presses Mayweather he adapts and begins to land easily. Mosely does have a good punchers chance but I cant wait to see his defensive strategy.

Anyway that EVER calls Sugar Shane Mosely overrated should slap their parents for not having second thoughts. LMAO!!! Throughout his career his has challenged nothing but the best, he has lost but he is a tremendous boxer. I have the utmost respect for him, but to defeat Money
you got to come with an incredible game plan and not just a Knockout strategy cause it wont happen.

  • Eli says:

This fight is a hard one to call. this definitely is mayweather’s toughest challenge by far. I think mosley will fight smart, take chances when he sees an opening, and try to punish may every chance he gets. May on the the other hand will probably be like a roy jones in his prime. a lil taunt, a lot of movement, and like a cobra! just wanting for the right opportunity to strike. Can’t wait for May, 1

  • Facts R Back says:

Mayweather Haters . . . Get ready to witness another masterful flawless performance from Money May!!! Shane about to get his bell rung with sharp crisp accurate counter punches, because of his lack of firm defense he will get hit with a lot of crisp clean punches.

Shane beat Margarito off haymakers. I never thought Margarito had skill anyway. Hes just a really big welterweight. I like Shane Mosely but as much as he begged and begged for this
fight, he will soon learn that Money May is not 40-0-25 knockouts for no reason.

    Mayweather but 11th round stoppage!!!

  • patpump says:

@ Justin….I agree…Cortez is the worst referee ever in boxing, he could ruin any fight.

  • Mike says:

    Bo

Mosley is overrated and beat only overated and washed up fighters? Is that what your saying?
Man,you know VERY little about boxing! lol

  • fighting says:

    Break down Floyd v Mosley;

    Speed Floyd
    skills Floyd
    boxing acumen Floyd
    Stamina Floyd
    Punching power Mosley
    will to win even

    Prediction Floyd by UD.

  • Reidj says:

Floyd will pay a price for every shot he lands on Shane. That’s why he will be very careful in picking his spots. I would be suprised if he throws more than 30 punches per round. It will be alot of clinches with the ref trying to figure out who’s at fault and he may take points if he has the balls. If there are any knock downs it will be in the beginning rounds cause I think both fighters will be rusty and nervous. I think it’s to much money to be made with Manny vs Floyd so Floyd will win a split decision unless Shane can KO him. This will be the toughest fight of Floyds career by far.

  • ozzy osborne says:

its easy to hit some one many times when they have no movement !! floyd is not gonna just stand there like clottey or marga-cheato !! call it running or what ever ya want, but standing in front of people with no movement is dumb against high out put fighters…

  • Bo says:

Lets be serious, Shane Mosley is overrated and has been for a long time. The only wins that meant anything were against De la Hoya and he cheated in at least one of the fights with PEDs.Vargas was always a bum, he got beat by Winky Wright who has no offense at all or foot movement twice. How does a PROFESSIONAL boxer fight a guy twice and never figures out how to hit the guy who just sits in the middle of the ring and hides behind his guard. As for Margarito and Mayorga those guys are club fighters. Miguel Cotto even outboxed him and Cotto is clearly not even as quick, fast, or as athletic as him.

  • kingalex says:

I’ll be counting the 36 minutes for Mosley to land the power punch that everyone is waiting for. The way I did with DLH and Fatton, so let’s bring it.

  • Mike says:

    YES

  • Fighter says:

Floyd can’t see Shane. That’s why he added a rematch clause. That’s why he origionally overlooked him, before the earthquake thing. He want’s no part of a dangerous fighter. That’s why he gets in there with guys he can play around with, and dance, and smile. Wont be none of that once Shane put’s them tips on him. We’re gonna see Floyd get hurt for the first time. Shane has no quit in him, even when he’s hurt. Floyd is all flash, no heart. Shane is too technically proficient, too strong, too experienced, and too fast…that’s right, too fast. He gets overlooked for some odd reason, but his hands are fast as lightning. When was the last time you saw Floyd throw a 3 or> punch combo. He pot shots, and jumps in and out. HE’S the jittery one. He should be, cause Sahne’s a bruiser. We saw Shane land 8 punches in a row on Margarito, in a combo, unanswered. Now I get that Margarito is no Mayweather. But how can anybody make the argument that Shane is old, or slowing down, when he throws multi punch combos, and is still knocking guys out, dominating fights, and going the distance…and looking good doing it. Meanwhile Floyd has to fight lightweights, and still lands one punch at a time.

    Shane all the way!

I’m not dillusional, I know Mayweather is a great threat, but so is Shane.

  • kingalex says:

Justin, as far as I know Kenny Bayless is the referee for the fight. The judges will be Dave Moretti, Robert Hoyle and Adalaide Byrd.

  • Zorro says:

I wonder which is more likable, Pacquiao or Floyd? Let’s say that no body knows them as fighters. Do you think more would like Floyd? Yeah, this arrogant, pompous, with his in-your-face insult, and flashing of money. Yeah, you fans of him. Is this the kind of guy you would support? Tsk tsk tsk.

  • Kohl says:

I don’t know what Floyd is capable of nowadays. Mosley is supposed to expose him but Mosley has himself left his best days behind perhaps more so than Floyd? I can’t see Roger winning and I can’t imagine Floyds people taking the fight if they thought Mayweather could.

  • Foreal says:

    @Justin
Can you just tell us how Cortez spoilt the Hatton fight.

  • Foreal says:

Ohh…there is a prominent athlete who has been caught on PED’s. Anyone heard of it? Does it say something about the real issues in sport today?

  • Justin says:

Anyone know who the Ref will be ..I hope its not Cortez..he ruined the hatton fight……..

  • Laughingatyou says:

Why are sports writters being the ones to vote who the P4P best fighter is? Biased is something you can’t escape, but if you ask the fighters who they believe is the true P4P or fighter of the decade you will get a totally different opinion. These are some of the same writters that predicted Mosley would be stopped by Margarito when different boxers where saying Mosley had a good chance; I don’t value these writter’s opinions very much.

  • Foreal says:

A lot of crap…this is why it is called…the mythical P4P. Mythical indeed.

  • Laughingatyou says:

No disrespect, but I don’t kow how Pacquiao won fighter of the decade; he didn’t become number 1 P4P until mayweather retired and that happend in 2007, damn near the end of the decade. If you look at 2000 to 2010 Mayweather overall is ranked higher than Pacquiao p4p every year from 2000 to 2007.From 2000 to 2004 Jones was regarded the best until he lost to Tarver in 2004. After that lost Mayweather emerged not long after as the number 1 P4P up until 2007 the year he retired which was in Dec of that year. So realistically Manny Pacquiao has been regarded the number 1 P4P for the last 2 years of the decade. How does that equate to being fighter of the decade?

  • Foreal says:

The only reason Pacman was named fighter of the decade is because he beat Oscar,Hatton and Cotto. But we know the circumstances these fightres were beaten under..anyhow, the fact is that he beat them. Floyd also beat two of these fighters, Oscar at his real weight and handed Hutton his first loss. I particularly have no problems with Pacman being a fighter of the decade, that is a tittle it acknowledges great achievement, but not nessessarily the best. There is no Way Floyd could have become fighter of the decade because he had retired. He has come back to claim his position and he will. We will watch events unfolding and you will read and hear from the very press….after may 1.

  • Anonymous says:

It’s sad that so many so called experts named Pac fighter of the decade… What made them “expert” in the art of boxing…like Floyd said most of them had never been inside a ring..they hate Floud for telling the truth.

  • Foreal says:

For the bigger part of Floyd’s career he has always had lashing critics…through-out. I don’t think that it bothers him. He also has a huge fan base that he knows backs him. He has had to fight in hostile crowds too, for a number of fights. This only fires him up, he knows that at this stage people expect him to perfom miracles, he is not previlagded like many other fighters that are more of idols and are literally built by the press. He only has his skills to prove to all that he has the greatest skills in the game today.

  • anoym says:

shane mosley has an ace up his sleeve and that is nazim richardson. Naazim has a plan he has not told anyone except shane and its up tp shane to implement it. Naazim is shane’s eyes because he will tell shane to adjust in the rounds and it s up to shane to adjust. IF shane was 31 he would knck out floyd but i still think he has a great chance of winning. SHane has a fighters spirit and will not for a second think ‘hey i should give up’. I hope shane KOs floyd because that would make him worthy of being the third sugar.

Manny you are grounded. Now go take your steroids.

  • DJ says:

Shane is not a one puch knockout artist and neither is Floyd. This fight will go the distance. Shane always comes ready to fight and throws a lot of punches. Floyd will have to increase his work ratio in order to get the decision. I still say that Floyd wants no part of Pac Man. He would certainly lose that fight and he (and his handlers) know it.

  • BagumBayan says:

There will always be haters and doubters the way there will always be lovestruck fans.

  • JesusJones says:

    Floyd wanted a rematch clause…..

With Pacquiao, he had the blood testing. With Mosley, he has a rematch clause. Talk about doubting yourself with fighters more than capable of KO’s! Confidence out the window from the get go. Sugars camp will capitalize on this knowledge by letting Floyd feel the power punch early. Pacquiao side bustin to get under Floyd’s skin is brilliant. Floyd is thinking and he’s is frustrated. He is not being respected by his peers, lol!

  • gar 30 says:

I certainly hope so but I doubt it, Why would Floyd get into a full on war with Mosley or Pacquiao for that matter?
That would be playing right into their hands and Floyd is many things but stupid isn’t one of them.
Even if Shane gets stuck into Floyd early and lands some good shots which I beleive he will, Floyd is always going to remain calm and stick to his tactics becouse that is what he always does and there is no way that is going to change at this late stage of his career.

  • Family Guy says:

ive seen people praise mayweathers opponents hundreds of times before he fights them.. like jmm for instance, mayweather took on a dangerous fighter or whatever.. jmm was like number 2 or 3 p4p on most lists.. but when floyd schools him these critics line up to critisize him !! he was too old, too small, floyd should have fought him at this weight, jmm had the flu , jmm had an off day !! ricky h. , de lahoya same chit different fighter ..while i think shane is mayweathers toughest fight he has taken, i dont think shane can beat him..

  • Dom says:

I’d love if Mosley won but hey c’mon it’s Mayweather. The guy is the best fighter in the world period.

  • Shadow says:

I think that alot of people have a clouded judgement before this fight because of Mayweather’s 0. He is a great fighter, but nobody is unbeatable. Mayweather claims to be better than Sugar Ray Robinson. Robinson was also 40-0 when he got his first loss. The difference is that Sugar also was at one time in his career 128-1 with 2 draws and 1 no contest. Sugar also once fought twice in 3 weeks while Mayweather fights once a year. Mayweather’s 0 is still there because Mayweather is a cherry picker. This time though he is finally taking chances, not because he chose to but because he had to. He painted himself into a corner with all his blood testing bull. Why start cleaning up the sport now. He didn’t ask Marquez to take a test. That’s because Marquez is a much smaller fighter and therefore had almost no chance of beating Mayweather, although Marquez is a great fighter. Floyd had to take a fight to show that his blood testing bull didn’t come up because he was afraid og Pacquiao, which he probably was. Now we have a great fight where Floyd can show what he is made of against a great fighter that wasn’t cherry picked. And it’s quite possible that his 0 will become a 1.

And just to clear things up I’m not a Pacquiao fan. I like many others believe felt Marquez got robbed against Pacquiao. It was clear that Marquez won at least the second fight, if not both.

  • Jamnor says:

With a fight of this magnitude, and the talent both men posses it’s easy to make a case for either fighter to win. But for my money, I’d have to go with Floyd. I’ve stated in another post, that when you have two fighters that are both talented, and all things being fairly equal, the one with the fewest flaws will usually prevail, and I believe that to be mayweather.

  • Ukansodoff says:

Im sure Mosley can do it in the early rounds but as the fight goes on and Mosley has to use so much energy chasing Floyd down hes guna slow down and play right into Floyds hands.

I will do backflips up and down my street at 5am in the morning if Mosley beats Floyd but i just cant see it.

  • Foreal says:

There is a big difference when someone’s hope is based on hope. Our hope (Floyd,s fans) is based on Floyd’s skills. I particularly don’t have any doubt that Floyd will win. I say so because of what Floyd is well known for…the most gifted fighter, the best diffence etc. Shane is a good boxer, he will certainly produce some anxious moments but that is expected, even Floyd knows that you cant go into a boxing match and not get tested. Floyd looks like he has never been tested purely because of his skills, he always finds ways to neutralise his opponents. Don’t ever bank on the fact that Pacman destroyed Oscar and Hatton in a more dominating manner than Floyd. While it is true, styles do make fights Floyd’s approach usually is to box his opponents to a win. If really Floyd wanted, he could have turned the Marquez fight into another Gatti beating but he is smart, he does what he does for a win. Floyd went into the Gatti fight an angry man, to prove to all that he could mince Gatti, he may be in the same mood here. Only bums risk serous injury for luck of boxing skills because all they can bank on is power and speed..and this is what can be enhanced with PEDs.

I never doubt mayweather’s talent. it’s just that his mouth is so DIRTY and I hope shane will give him a good beating… I believe too that mosley will come out victorious, Mosley VIA TKO in 6th.

  • Listener says:

    heheheh…!

That is all i can do laugh at some of the predictions even from the so called boxing analysts, do you really see Mosley catching Mayweather? look the same people call this kid the most defensive fighter in the history of boxing, but today they want to call that running, he will give you the shoulder and also run rings around you, i thought that was part of tact, unless you want Mayweather to fight like any boring boxer…. this kid comes around as special, as i said yesterday and am saying it today, ‘when you are a champion everybody wants you to fall so they take your spot’

  • tommy says:

Castillo and DeLaHoya proved that floyd could be beat with the jab.I’m not saying Shane will win “I certainly wouldnt put money on it”but it’s possible with the jab.I think it will be close thru 4 or 5 then Floyd takes over.9 rounds to 3.or 8 rounds to 4.I bet Vegas feels about the same.Oh yeah!If Mosley isnt fast enough,Pacquiao isnt fast enough.nuff said.

  • Free one says:

Boxer vs fighter.. C may 1st. We will see.. I give Shane chance of beating Floyd.. Cuz he has speed n power .. I just don’t like Shane lowering both of he’s hands more often.. Can’t do that againts Floyd.. Shane k.o on rnd 10th

  • Big AL says:

Floyd is like Mariano Rivera, you know what’s coming but it’s almost impossible to hit. He’s going to do his shoulder roll defense and pot shot all night, but the key will come down to Mosely’s conditioning and tactics. If Shane gets a consistant jab and body attack going early he could set up the big KO, but if he’s chasing Floyd and wearing down he’ll get easily decisioned.

  • noelpogi says:

I’ll bet my egg, Mosley will smash Floyd’s mouth and scatter is all over the ring.

  • graham says:

Mosley’s offensive skills! what offensive skills? The guy has spent most of his career fighting on the back foot. Yes when he stuns his opponent he moves in and tries to finish them off while they are still dazed, apart from that Shane doesn’t want to come forward and Shane doesn’t really want to fight on the inside. Most of the time he wants to hold on the inside.

Now, some people will say that Naazim Richardson can change that by giving Mosley a good strategy. But a good strategy is nothing if Mosley hasn’t got the tools to implement it. I will give you an example, Mosley has no effective jab (like the one De La Hoya used on Mayweather). And you know you don’t get a jab like that from thin air.

It’s also interesting to hear that “Mosley is excellent at adapting to changing situations during a fight” but I wish you could give examples becuase I have not seen this.

“Mosley can always crowd Mayweather and shut him down with wrestling on the inside”!? – The thing is, Mosley is not dealing with another ordinary fighter. If Mayweather doesn’t want Mosley to grab we know exactly what he will do, he’ll put his left arm across Shane’s chest or neck, push him off, and bang to the body.

I am only pointing out these issues because I think Shane Mosley needs to be careful and stop getting too much into this hype about his speed, inside fighting, and punching power. Mayweather can neutralise all that. Mosley needs to bring all his other skills into this fight if he wants to win.

  • RaiderB2ful says:

I really can’t see Floyd knocking out Shane, and at some point, Mosley will connect and connect again on floyd, . . it’s gonna be interesting to see how floyd shakes it off like it doesn’t hurt, than see how his chin holds up over 12 rounds. My bet is that Shane retires the oh by k-o! just not a pretty night…

  • Aaron says:

Interesting fight it will be this sat really looking forward, Theres a reason why FMJ is undefeated and I expect him to show the world why. This fight is bigger than what the Pacman can bring at this point with a win for FMJ you can be expecting FMJ vs PM very soon if not owell you can’t always get what you want and if ya do your spoilt!

  • Anonymous says:

Shane Mosley has a puncher’s chance. But that’s about it.

  • Frankly says:

If Mosley can put constant presuure (ala PACMAN) througout the fight and hopefully Floyd would not run, he would have a chance of landing that power punches which could hurt Floyd. But I worry about Old Mosley’s stamina with his age and long period of inactivity. But it only takes one punch to floor Floyd.
