Calzaghe has no plans on coming back – News

By Sean McDaniel: Former IBF/WBA/WBC/WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KO’s) has no intentions of staging a comeback, according to news from the Mirror. A spokesperson for Calzaghe informed the Mirror that Calzaghe has no intentions of ever fighting again. It was recently reported by several boxing sites that Calzaghe was planning on making a comeback in late 2010 and that his agent was looking around for potential opponents.

Calzaghe was being linked for a fight with Robin Reid, but that no seems to be a bogus rumor that has been circulating around the net. Calzaghe, who is a wealthy man, doesn’t need the money and has no intention on coming back. Calzaghe last fought in November 2008, beating boxing great Roy Jones Jr. by a lopsided 12 round decision. Before that, Calzaghe beat Bernard Hopkins by a 12 round split decision in April 2008.

At the time that Calzaghe retired, he had pretty much exhausted all the potential big money opponents out there for him. Boxing fans wanted to see Calzaghe fight guys like Chad Dawson and Kelly Pavlik, but those fights wouldn’t have given Calzaghe the big payday that he needed for him to show interest in fighting them. The Super Six tournament hadn’t started at the time that Calzaghe retired, and fighters like Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, and Arthur Abraham weren’t well known fighters to casual boxing fans. Those fighters will all be popular by the time the Super Six tournament is over, but unfortunately their popularity has come too late.

everyone whilst on marching powder? i know which fighter in froch and calslappy i would set as a role model

  • patpump says:

Why come back Joe?….Perfect record . Why is Froch so obsessed with him, I find it really wierd. Joe would have polished Froch without a problem. Joe is a very different kind of fighter, but he beat everyone in front of him.

    Why come back joe ???

You schooled everyone put in front of you including jones and bhop.

  • Stamina9008 says:

Stick to the Cocaine Joe, im sure you’ve got enough money to ensure an adequate supply.

  • Kohl says:

Thank god! Stay retired Joe enjoy the fame and the record for the history books. There is nothing to prove but how much a good fighter can slide when he keeps trying to come back.

  • jackson says:

anonymous….arent you a haye fan…of course he’s taken on some real legends…easy to see what you’re priorities are….

  • ashishwarrior says:

we do not need this pitty pat brit to come back.Hes not exciting and he never was, this tourney is fine without him.

  • larame says:

Joe C was the greatest he whipped Jones and the great BH and also ended the career od Lacy as he would have of anyone he fought He was an extremly talented fighter who could ajust his style and tactics and do waht ever was necessary to win and he did EVERY TIME HE FOUGHT

  • Sully says:

I personally think the most interesting SMW match-up from a fans perspective would be Bute-Calzaghe. I am very disappointed that Lucian is not in the Super 6 tournament to begin with. Bute power and speed would cause fits for anyone including big Joe. It’ll never happen, but I’d sure like to see it. Wouldn’t mind seeing Bute fight outside of Montreal and get some more exposure as well.

  • jackson says:

calzaghe cleaned out the division…mayweather has never done that…and jones was the one ducking good fighters had light heavyweight, not calzaghe…and bernard was offered the fight with calzaghe when they were both in their primes and pulled out….calzaghe had far more injuries than either jones or hopkins, so he was far older than his age when he retired

  • jackson says:

calzaghe was a great fighter, who changed his style to compensate for brittle hands and ended up, hands down, the greatest super middleweight who ever lived…and he would have been a handful for any fighter who ever laced on the gloves…too many hands puns?

  • R J Hill says:

Joe was an exciting talented fighter., for those who say he wasn,t,or that he ducked anyone, knows little of the reignof one of the best we have seen in awhile.,exsuberant and fast he fought and soundly beat Kessler who was no chump, just not the same skills. And yes he did fight two older greats and prevailed. if he is set with money, stay retired. you were the best in your day at super middle

  • P4P KING says:

Maybe now Froch will shut up

  • Rico says:

I agree with Saj Ali, Joe Cokezaghe’s record is definitely padded. Hopkins and Jones were past it. And Jeff Lacy was always overhyped also. Cokezaghe will always fall short of greatness based on his opposition.

  • Saj Ali says:

I like JC and am a big fan of his, often defending him against criticism but is Calzaghe the British Marciano. Great record but tad manufactured. Like Rocky, Joe fought live opponents and good fighters but either they were pre-prime or post-prime and he only fought pretty much within few hundred miles of his home town??? Like Mayweather, he sought to protect his record rather than bite the bullet. He may still have been unbeaten if he’d fought all-comers but seemed to hand-pick at tad. Any comments???

  • Rico says:

Good! we dont need him stinking up the joint!

  • tony says:

firstly calzaghe is bwt 15 stones at the moment..he’s been sat on his arse smokin weed awl day..dont think he’d whoop anyones as lol. even if he trains hard and gets down to the weight the reflexes will be no where near as they were in the days he beat bernard nd jeff nd roy. froch would walk thru da slaps and ko the slapping b

  • justin says:

Yeah Dawson but we all will know Froch is not so great when Kessler beats his ass tomorrow .

  • Dawson says:

come back just for 1 easy payday and whoop Froch! Any1 who know anything about the sport know Thatd be a easy nights work.
