Bradley: “He [Maidana] can either be outboxed, or I could get knocked out”

By Jason Kim: World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (25-0, 11 KO’s) knows what he’s up against in his next fight against Argentinean knockout artist Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KO’s) when they face each other on June 19th at the Agua Caliente Casino, in Rancho Mirage, California. In an article at Mydesert, the 26-year-old Bradley says “It’s a typical fight between a boxer vs. puncher. I’m not a huge puncher, so he [Maidana] can either be out-boxed or I could get knocked out. I don’t think he fights technically at all. He comes with a game plan, but that’s just to break you down and then knock you out. He’s like, ‘I can take your punchers, but can you take mine?”

That pretty much sums Maidana up completely. He’s not going to be a fighter that will try to box with Bradley. Maidana will instead be pure business, as he single-mindedly goes after Bradley and tries to tear him apart all night long. Maidana clearly isn’t a technical boxer, and instead likes to go after his opponents with huge punches with unrelenting pressure. Maidana, unlike other fighters, loads up on everything he throws but does it without tiring out.

It doesn’t matter to him if he misses a lot of his shots. He continues to throw with a lot of power with every shot and hurts whatever he hits. In his last fight, he walked through a lot of big shots from Victor Cayo to take him out in the 6th round, in a fight that was televised by HBO on March 27th. In the past year alone, Maidana has destroyed two top fighters with knockout wins over Victor Ortiz, and Cayo.

The win over Ortiz was especially impressive, because many boxing experts felt that Ortiz was destined to be a world champion. Maidana got up off the deck three times to score to knockdowns and an eventual 6th round stoppage win over Ortiz. Some people say that Ortiz made the mistake of fighting Maidana’s fight, saying that’s why he lost. However, in looking at the fight recently, Ortiz had little choice but to fight Maidana all out because Maidana expertly cut off the ring on Ortiz and forced him to fight. Maidana’s power shots were too big for Ortiz just to cover up against. He had to fight because there was little other choice.

Gary Shaw, the promoter of Bradley, says this about the Bradley-Maidana fight: “This could probably go down as the best fight of the year in any weight class. It’s a fight fans can’t wait to see. It’s just a huge fight coming early in Tim’s career. The benefactors obviously are the fans and all of boxing, specially the fans around here who can come to the Agua Caliete to watch Timmy.” Shaw was previously going to match Bradley against a welterweight contender Luis Carlos Abregu. However, an HBO executive suggested that Maidana might be a good alternative. The rest is history.

Maidana will be an excellent choice for Bradley, because of his big power and pressure. Maidana, the World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion, is hoping to get a fight with the full WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan next year in 2011, as long as Maidana can keep winning.

  • Oli says:

Anonymous- Maidana? well hes knocked Ortiz out, who Khans talking about fighting after malignaggi (if he wins). Cayo, and everyone else hes fought have been harder than opponants than any of King Cherry Khans.

Bradley? Well hes beat, witter, holt (who Ko’d Torres), campbell (who king cherry khan might end up facing if he beats Ortiz, and who king cherry khan ducked at 135), peterson (who is better than kotelnik) and NOW Maidana and Bradley have agreed to fight each other, while King Cherry Khan DOESNT call Alexander out, but instead waits till everyone has been been beat or signed to fight someone else before calling them out.

How can you NOT call Khan a cherry picking protected chinny ducking coward? Hes obviously not prepared to fight the best, you can slag bradley off, but end of the day Bradley is the one fighting maidana so Khan doesnt have to.

Khan is one of the weakest at 140, everybody would love to knock him out but they cant get a shot because hes extremely particular about who he fights

    @ oli

Who has maidana and bradley fought?

nobodys jus like amir khan !!!!

The thing is thou amir makes money and theres a reason for that !!!

when he does fight the best at 140 he will beat them all get of your high horse pal !! anybody with half a brain can see amir has more talent than all of the other fighters put together at 140!!!

Maidana has a punchers chance !!
bradley hasnt even got that on amir he couldnt even put witter away.

  • Oli says:

So the deal is this…They said to maidana, IF you prove yourself and beat Cayo, Bradley then probabaly Alexander, then you MIGHT get a shot at Amir king cherry Khan.

Meanwhile Amir king cherry Khan can fight the Brutal Paulie Malignaggi, while everyone else fights each other.

    Sounds fair doesnt it?

    Cherry anyone?

  • Oli says:

It comes down to this…The best at 140 are all willing to fight each other, no questions, no excuses. Amir Chinny Cherry Coward Khan ISNT willing to do that so he isnt one of the best. Lets just leave it at that.

  • ashishwarrior says:

good fight keep them coming maybe khan might not join them frightning thought for him i guess

  • Ipressbuttons says:

Pretty sure Bradley will outbox him. When Maidana was up against Kotelnik he insisted on trying to knock him out, he doesn’t box but hes damn fun to watch. Can’t wait for this one!

  • tiger1223usa says:

this will be a good match up .floyed will duck both these fighters too

  • Ukansodoff says:

Bradley is a damn smart boxer and hes quite clear and honest about this fight.

But even the slickest of boxers get punched at some point. It will be interesting and im certainly looking foreward to it.

  • bangus banger says:

Bradley knows better not to brawl with Maidana. Like Bradley said he better box. Maidana is a power puncher, possibly Bradley can score alot by boxing and moving. He gets tag who knows lights out for Bradley but if can keep on moving and box to the later rounds and still standing, Bradley could win by out pointing Maidana for a decision win.

  • God says:

    @zko

    it is made.

Im going with maidana on this one.

  • Bro says:

This should be an excellent fight by all accounts. Bradley is a workhorse and Maidana throws bombs non stop until he puts you down, 28 wins with 27 by KO is pretty damn good, he`s relentless and has a great chin. Bradley is spot on, you don`t want to trade with this Maidana for too long or you won`t last. Either way this should be a stellar fight.

  • swift says:

Do you guys actually watch boxing or do you look at the highlights?? Tim Bradley is a world class fighter! He will beat Maidana easy!! Did you not see Victor Ortiz put this guy down 3 times? Trust me, Tim will not run from him at all, he will soften him up and knock him out in about 10-11 rounds, to much skill…

  • Cruz says:

Real champions dont break under pressure. Question is… Is Bradley a real champion?

  • ZKO says:

I havent really heard many boxers be this realistic. Tells me that Bradley will study Maidana well. Hope this fight gets made.

    @ davyjonesslocker

If A mere Con could beat Marcos Maidana. Freddie Roach would not be protecting A mere Con from Marcos Maidana. Golden Boy Promotion would not be protecting A mere Con from Marcos Maidana either. Furthermore, A mere Con would not have made excuses not to fight Marcos Maidana.

  • davyjonesslocker says:

    khan beats this bum easily

  • julito el loco says:

Bradley is completely right. If is able to box, and by boxing I mean score single shots and run around the ring, then he has a chance to win, but I’m not sure he’ll be able to do that with Maidana. Maidana will shorten the ring for Tim as nobody has done it before against him and he’ll have no place to go but to face Maidana and that will be deadly. I think Maidana takes Tim out within the 8th round. With that being said, a round of aplause for this two fighters for steping up and taking the fight that all boxing fans want to see. It was time for some of the top 140s to face each other and this is probably the best match of all.

  • anoym says:

I think Timothy bradley will be using the jab a lot and pot shots. Bradley knows a brawl will only end one way. Expect to see bradley moving around the ring a lot. I think Bradley is world class and he can move for 12 rounds if he wants to. Bradly by decision or madaina by KO.
