Weigh-in: Clottey 147, Pacquiao 145.75

By Jim Dower: As expected, Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KO’s) came in right at the welterweight limit of 147. It’s good that Clottey didn’t have to sweat off an excess pounds, because that would likely leave him feeling weakened for tomorrow. Now he can rehydrate and possibly come into tomorrow’s fight in the neighborhood of 160.

For his part, Pacquiao weighed in two pounds under the limit at 145.75 Pacquiao will put on a few pounds and be weighing near or at 150 tomorrow night. Unless Clottey had to really dehydrate himself to make weight, he shouldn’t be that much bigger than Pacquiao tomorrow when they step in the ring at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas.

    kray…

    lol…4 real

  • kray says:

@Free one – Pac can get to 147. He came into the ring @ 148.5 against ODLH. He’s by no means a big WW, like a Clottey. But, he walks around at about the WW limit. Floyd is also, not a big WW. He does not walk around at a weight of 160-170, like Clottey. He walks around, probably, at about 147-155 (or less).

It was not a concern about Manny’s size, in terms of facing him in the ring. It was more so about someone of his size walking through the punches of natural WW’s who have been KO’ing other natural WW’s. He has fought below 140, for most of his career, and was hurt, even KO’d earlier in career, by smaller men. It just did not make sense, to some people, in the sport.

@ Frankly we get it! floyd is bad and pac is great, how many posts do you have to make on one thread to try to get your point across.

These are both great fighters and i dont see why if you like one you have to hate the other. Im happy to have the opportunity to see both fight and to say that one is crap shows nothing more then blind ignorance.

  • mario says:

All the ppv events usually start at 8!! Which is 9 est

  • asif says:

if pacman does not brawl with clottey i do not think the size will make the difference. However, boxing fans who have regularly beeen reading the post fight articles will be eager to know what happens when clottey goes into his defensive shell and pacman fires the body. Will Clottey feel nothing and switch the lights of pacman or will pacman destroy clottey and win within the distance

ps does anyone know where people who do not have HBO can watch this fight on the internet :)

  • JR says:

Doesn’t matter. Team Pac set the contract conditions for the welterweight limit. It’s Team Pac’s fault if they can’t make the weight.

Clottey came in at the weight he’s supposed to. He hasn’t gone over or under.

This is a WW fight. I still see Pac winning it but Clottey has a ood chance of pulling an upset.

  • Rikudou says:

When the event starts at 9 PM EST, how many hours until the Main Event starts (pacquiao/clottey)?

  • JACK FLORES says:

IN MY HONEST OPINION, MANNY PAQUIAO WILL STILL WIN DESPITE CLOTTEY’S PHYSICAL ASSET BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ANALYSIS:
    1. MANNY PACQUIAO IS FEARLESS ON THE RING. 2. HE HAS ENOUGH STAMINA TO WITHSTAND THE RIGOROUS OF ACTUAL BOXING UP TO 15-20 ROUNDS. 3. HE IS EXPERIENCED FIGHTER. 4. HE HAS A STYLE OF OFFENSE AND DEFENSE. THE ONLY DANGER I COULD VISUALIZE IS A STRONG LUCKY SOLID PUNCH IN THE CHIN AREA THAT COULD KNOCK HIM OUT.

  • Got Skillvoid says:

Haye gave away 8 stone to Valuev, who cares about a few pounds!

  • vince vegas says:

My guess is Clottey will weigh in more like 162 on fight night. Pac 150, maybe a pound more.

Not long ago that amount of weight difference was pretty common, before the Jr. weights were added. Jr. division’s were only added to provide sanctioning bodies & promoters with more champions & more championship fights, fee’s, belts, etc, etc, etc….

Clottey has reach & height but 10 or 12 pounds is not an enormous size advantage, on paper. Of course on canvass, we’ll see.

Can’t wait to read the boards Sunday!

  • wowzabean says:

    da “truth”

Clottey’s coach didn’t do a good job on his last fights, maybe switching it up w/someone who was actually a cut man on Pac’s side is even better for Josh. Just a thought. Plus it’s 2010, I’m sure they can speak through….I don’t know anything.

  • DA THRUTH says:

look how easy pacquiao have it . did joshua clottey COACH CAME TO AMERICA WITH HIM . NO!!
PACQUIAO IS FIGHTING JOSHUA CLOTTEY WITHOUT HIS COACH . Clottey COACH is not in the USA SO TELL ME IS THAT A FAIR FIGHT .WOULD PACQUIAO STILL FIGHT IF ROACH IS NOT THERE ???

  • wowzabean says:

    gdup,

It’d be horrible. I was in vegas when Pac lost to Morales the first time. All Filipinos were walking around like someone shot there dog (this is long before Pac was the icon he is mind you). Pac carries a lot of national pride, you have to keep in mind those 45k tickets sold are 99% Pacquiao fans.

  • gdup says:

I actually want to see Clottey win just to see how people react.

  • geo says:

The fact that Oscar was trying to use an Iv to rehydrate for his fight with Pacquiao says it all. That’s what he gets though.

  • wowzabean says:

Weight draining is just an excuse, get over it. If the fights were close you could argue draining weight would be a disadvantage. Wrestling, mui thai, boxing, MMA, all these fighters drain to make weight, it’s part of the sport. If you can’t make the weight, fight at another weight class Jesus. If Pac fought Pwill and won you’d argue weight drain? Give me a break.

Anyway, I saw Clottey today and wow, he looked A LOT skinnier then the press conference, his jaw was hella chiseled. I’m curious to see his weight tomorrow.

  • ElCondor says:

Let’s just enjoy the fight. The two fighters are evenly matched, regardless of how much they weigh on fight night. Both have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it will be interesting which would show more on fight night: strengths or weaknesses. Pacquiao will still win this one, but it won’t be an easy fight…especially if he gets cut by one of Clottey’s “accidental” head butts.

  • LuvBoxing says:

I think Clottey has a chance to win the fight if he fights smart and uses his weight advantage. That being said, Pac still wins this fight unless he is buying into all the hype and doesn’t come with his A game.

I am expecting a VERY competitive fight tomorrow.

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

The beer is chilled. Foregoing barbecues for lots of chips.

    Can’t wait!!!

    GO PACQUIAO!!!
    GO CLOTTEY!!!

  • mario says:

    @kray

Actually pac wanted cotto to go down to 142 o 143 but cotto said he wouldn’t go lower then 145 n he got his wish!! Pac is not just my favorite I love watchin floyd mosley williams pavlik valero bradley marquez etc etc I love boxin if u don’t got somethin useful don’t comment

  • dagohoy says:

    @vlad i like that credit card thing.,ur absolutely right…

  • kray says:

@mario – Hindsight is 20/20 isn’t it? Yeah, we all thought ODLH was gonna kill Pac, because, he would come in big (after rehydrating), and bring his strength with him. Little did we know they would ask Mosely (as a condition of fighting him) to come in at or near JWW, or they would instead fight Cotto, and ask him to defend a belt at 145, which he fought for and won @ the WW limit.

Why do you think people keep saying this is Pac’s first true test @ WW? We all know WW is technically above 140 with a limit of 147. But, they mean, this his first test @ WW without cathweights or against a drained MW, etc.

The facts are the facts. So, stop crying like a b*tch cause there’s room to criticize you daddy Manny.

Just sit back, drink a Teacate, from your baby bottle, enjoy the show tomorrow and STFU.

  • NEL says:

SO WHAT WAS PACQUIAO WHEN HE WAS AT LIGHTWEIGHT A WELTER AND KNOW IS A BIG DEAL THAT CLOTTEY IS A MIDDLEWEIGHT.I COULD ALREADY SMELL THE EXCUSES OH CLOTTEY IS A MIDDLEWEIGHT.THE TRUTH IS SIMPLE IS NOT THAT CLOTTEY IS BIGGER BUT THAT HE IS BIG BUT THAT HE IS A NATURAL RIGHTY THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT SETS HIM APART FROM THE OTHER 2 BIG GUYS. THAT THE RIGHT HAND WILL COME NATURAL FOR HIM TO THROW IT.HATTON IS NOT TO BE CONSIDER.

  • mario says:

    @ oli

Thx oli I agree!! Clottey is the number 1 contender so why not him!!!

  • Oli says:

Anyone who thinks this will be easy for pacquiao is seriously stupid.

And about the casual fan…F**k the casual fan, they dont follow boxing like we do! Forget them, they dont know what they are watching anyway! Lets make fights for the real fan. Im sick of hearing what the casual fan wants

  • vlad says:

i guess we are the only few who understand the true meaning of the game here.

  • mario says:

In the good old days the heavyweight division was always a mismatch on fite nite cuz the weights were way off!!lol tyson was always the smaller guy but did his thang!! My point is no matter age weight shot or not!! A fighter should get credit for beatin his oppnent in the ring

  • vlad says:

    @mario

    good point.

when fighters sign the contract they know what their getting into. they know what theyre capable of.

so making excuses after the fight is nonsense.

    no weight-drained
    no smaller fighter
    no overweight or underweight
    no excuses

they signed cntract, they’ll face the consequences that goes with it.

  • Tompo says:

    @mario/vlad

De La Hoya was seriously dehydrated for his fight with Pacquiao. It can’t be argued against. Yes, it was his fault, but it still means that Pacquiao fought someone severely weakened by the weight limitations.

However, that doesn’t mean to say Pacquiao wouldn’t beat De La Hoya at full operating performance levels. I think De La Hoya is too slow, too open, his footwork is too poor, to take on a fast combination puncher like Pacquiao. It’s an easy fight for Pacquiao, always was, so yeah, he’d have beaten a prime De La Hoya easily for me.

  • mario says:

Pac was suppose to take cotto true ww power but then pac ko him n the excuses of him bein shot came out!! I think cotto was at his best that nite!! Pac when thru beatin durin his career so wouldn’t it be safe to say his shot too

  • Tompo says:

    @Who Dat?

Floyd Mayweather Jnr isn’t going to “whoop” anyone. He’s a defensive fighter with no real power in his gloves, despite the handspeed. He only takes potshots because of his injured/damaged/weak hands. He’s not a KO fighter, so there’s no chance of him KO’ing a top fighter like Mosley or Pacquiao.

  • mario says:

    @ vlad

Lol am talkin to every writer who said clottey was unknown thru casual fans!! Bradley just signed to fight abregu at 147!! Wat if he loses will they make an excuse he was too heavy n should go back at 140

  • vlad says:

true – ODLH used i.v. to rehydrate himself.

that’s what he signed up for. just like most of us, signing for a credit card and then getting broke afterwards. lol

    no hard feelings please..

  • mario says:

    At kray

Shut up with the weight drain don’t u remember that ppl didn’t even want the fight to happen cuz they told odlh was goin to kill pac!! Noone came pac a chance but he ends up winnin so u bring up the weight drain!! Odlh agree to the weight so its his fault!! Don’t forget pac almost had to gain weight

  • Tompo says:

Anyone who thinks this is an easy fight for Pac doesn’t know much about boxing, or the Welterweight division.

Clottey is a top quality boxer who noone can dominate imo. He’s given Margarito a beating, gave Cotto a beating, and destroyed Baldomir before some silly fouls resulted in a DQ.

In short, he’s very unlucky not to have an unbeaten record that could easily stand up to the other top fighters in the Welterweight division.

  • vlad says:

    @mario

what is you point on casual fan thing?

    and

who are you talking to on this matter?

    just wondering.

  • kray says:

@Frankly–ODLH was drained against Pac. He came into the ring at 147lbs, while Pac came in at 148.5lbs. People gave ODLH a big chance, in that fight, because, they expected him to rehydrate overnight to a weight of around 160, and would bring his strength and all that. ODLH had not fought below 154, in a almost a decade. This means that he was used to rehydrating back up to 160+ or so, closer to his walk around weight. In that fight, he stuggled so much to make the weight, he had to use i.v.’s to try to rehydrate. Even Roach noticed that, and commented on that being a disadvantage for ODLH.

Not blaming Pac, for that. He did what he had to do. That was part of the deal. So, it is what is…

  • vlad says:

    @who dat

are you really going to bet your peaches?

i feel bad for you. you aint probably using those so you are willing to give it up.

im sure there are more women out there.

  • mario says:

I don’t understand how a casual fan doesn’t know clottey who fought margarito judah n cotto in HBO!! Are u sayin casual fans only watch PPV? How do they know bradley khan ? Cuz they were sayin those were better opponents instead of clottey

  • vlad says:

oh ok so that’s according to the betting odds. i didnt know you were looking on that part.

well, it is clottey’s time to shine again.

thats a chance right there for him. i bet he knows that.

  • Frankly says:

Who Dat & Kray. I’m really interested in testing your theories of Floyd and Mosley whipping PACMAN. But who do you think is stopping this from happening; rematch clause if Floyd loses to Mosley and this PAC phobia on the part of Floyd.

  • Who Dat? says:

Roach trying his best to talk this up to be a good competitive fight. No way in hell is this a close or competitive fight. Let’s get serious ppl. Yall just know Pac gonna destroy this guy. But I’m going for the underdog, I hope Clottey pulls a Buster Dougleas.

  • mario says:

Well they are fightin for the WBO belt but accordin to the odds n everyone he is goin to lose n its fair to say he’s got nuthin to lose cuz noone thinks he has a chance

  • mario says:

Zorrita vs diaz should be good too!!lol

  • Who Dat? says:

I’d bet my left nut Floyd would woop Pac, and I’d bet my right nut that Shane would woop Pac.

  • vlad says:

    @mario

im not trying to disrespect anyone or anything ok.

but my question is if this is clottey’s last chance, wouldnt it be something that he will be fighting for?

therefore he has something to lose.

    just thinkin..

  • vlad says:

would anybody bet their wife and kids for mayweather against pac?

    just wondering. no hard feelings.

  • mario says:

The main reason this will be a good action fight is cuz this is clottey last chance n he knows it!!! He’s goin all out with nuthin to lose n pac with everythin to lose

  • Frankly says:

Wishful thinking Kray. Mosley has to beat Floyd twice to have a crack at PACMAN. Floyd has to get around his PAC phobia and drop his silly demands if he wants to demonstrate his superiority on the ring and not outside the ring.

  • kray says:

SSM would score a guaranteed KO, against Pac. Pac cannot trade with that man, for 1/2 a round, and come out, on his feet.

PBF would put on a boxing clinic, and, possibly, score the KO too, ala Ricky Hatton.

They’ve not prepared Pac enough, for what’s to come. That lack of fundamentals and a average Boxing IQ, will be his achilles heal, against PBF. And SSM is too athletically gifted, and proud to let Pac get the best of him, if they go toe-to-toe. I believe, they would ask him to come down in weight.

Anyway…let’s see if JC brings all his skills to the table.

  • waltz says:

size can be a factor for Clottey to win this fight.

but Pacquiao has greater chance to win this match. can’t wait too see “the Event”.

  • mario says:

floyd didn’t even allow ppl to weigh him on fite nite but can’t blame him he doesn’t have too so I don’t blame clottey or think he’s cheatin cuz of it

  • vlad says:

good show = worth the money

    knockdowns = great!

brawl + brawl = oh yeah!

size difference = it doesnt really matter as long as as the ones mentioned above are present.

  • Frankly says:

Kray, That’s a 13 lbs difference and some say that ODLH was weigh drained at fight night. I’m really confused.

  • vlad says:

true – only on fight night

is there anybody here wants to fight a guy that would be 10 lbs or maybe more on fight night?

  • kray says:

@Frankly–Has he ever come into any of his previous bouts, as heavy as a MW? NO. He’s never been a big WW, like JC or SSM. And, for the record, when he fought ODLH, he was around 152, while ODLH was 165+. He’s not that big of a guy. So, why are you exaggerating?

  • Bob says:

The dummies just can’t stand the Pac sold 45,000 tickest. These guy’s are a bunch of loser’s

  • Oli says:

Im totally backing Clottey in this!!

Either way it will be an exciting fight, better than pacquiao vs Cotto because for me Clottey is better than Cotto. And he proved that when they fought only he was robbed by a bunch of crooks

  • mario says:

There no rulez on weight for fight nite !! Floyd just had to make weigh on the weigh but come fight nite do watever n he couldn’t even do that for jmm that’s why pac ask for the 10 mill for ibs on weigh in only not fite nite

  • vlad says:

so we will just make lightweights fight welterweights at their respective sizes. we’ll see how it goes.

it doesnt matter anyway as long as they sign the contract. 10 lbs difference aint that big of a deal, right?

i like that idea of yours.

  • yeah yeah says:

@FRANK—STOP SELLING THE FIGHT ALREADY…….SO WHAT CLOTEY IS BIGGER,HE LACKS REAL BOXING FOOT WORK JUST LIKE PANAMA LEWIS I MEAN MARGARITO,SO SPARE ME THE BULL CRAB COMMENTS…ROACH AND ARUM KNOW SHANE OR PBF WILL GIVE THEY’RE BOY PAC A NICE BOXING LESSON..45000 TICKETS SOLD AT 20 DOLLARS A POP IS GREAT LMFAO,,WHAT A JOKE,LIKE THEY SAID ON ESPN/PTI’YOU COULD HAVE A SHOOTING MARBLES TOURNEY AT DALLAS AND STILL SELL 45000 TICKETS’….RATHER WATCH MMA REPEATS ON SPIKE THAN BUY THIS LAME DUCK FIGHT…….

  • .cyoung says:

To fighters what the opponent weighs means nothing unless they are unprepared. A weight differnce of 5 to 10 lbs is close enough. Heavy-Weights don’t cry about the opponent weighing more than they do its that way at almost every fight. They both made the contract weight limit. What they weigh tomorrow is for stupid fans to argue about.

  • Frankly says:

The dude who beat JMM on his last fight (even cheated at weigh in) might have been at a middleweight level on fight night against a small welterwight.

  • gary says:

    can’t wait for the fight!

    LET’S GO PACMAN !!!

  • vlad says:

i wonder if people would say that clottey is weight-drained. theres a possibility that they would but its idiotic.

(lets see how a steroid user beats a middleweight class) just kidding..

  • vlad says:

i think they let manny on 145 so he may be comfortable enough. but at fight night it shouldnt pass the 150 mark. on the other hand, clottey might be way bigger than pacquiao.

i want to see how clottey uses his size advantage over pacman.

i also want to see how the smaller guy overcome those obstacles.

overall, its going to be exciting. i dont care who wins, as long as they put up a really good show.

  • Frankly says:

So a genuine welterweight on fight night for PAC doubters is one who weights at a middleweight level.

  • Frankly says:

Apologies, PACMAN at 147 lbs at fight night. 13 lbs difference.

  • Frankly says:

So in reality on fight night, PACMAN a welterweight (149 lbs) will be meeting Clottey, a middleweight level (160 lbs). Seems fair to me.
