The Tragedy of Victor “Vicious” Ortiz
By Francisco Hernandez: On May 15, at New York, Victor Ortiz will fight Nate Campbell.
On March 27, a week from now, Marcos Maidana will fight against Victor Cayo for the WBA interim junior welterweight title. In Nate Campbell, Ortiz will be facing his next real test after having failed the first one against his nemesis Maidana.
Victor Ortiz is a gem in the rough, he has great potential. Ortiz has natural knockout power, he was born with it. In boxing there are two ways to knockout your opponent: through technique and through natural knockout power. A fighter can learn technique but knockout power is a thing of nature, you either have it or you don’t. The most dangerous fighters are the ones who have the boxing technique to go along with their natural knockout power, two notable examples: Alexis Arguello and Carlos Zarate. Intelligence combined with power makes extraordinary fighters.
That Ortiz has natural power has been demonstrated in all his fights. In his fight with Maidana, Ortiz was able to demonstrate it by knocking Maidana down 3 times. In that fight Ortiz also exposed his lack of skills as a boxer and the sad condition of his trainers in the corner. The excuse of Ortiz’s trainers was that the young fighter didn’t follow the fight plan. The result was as most know; Ortiz quitted the fight in the sixth round.
Let’s examine the excuse that Ortiz’s trainers made, that Ortiz didn’t box Maidana, instead he opted to trade punches with him. This excuse is nonsense, but even some of the commentators of the fight repeated this fallacy. Roger Mayweather is not far from the truth when he criticizes many of these commentators for not knowing much about boxing. The truth is that Victor’s instincts were right in fighting and trading with Maidana on the inside. Maidana is a slugger and needs room to leverage his punches; he has no skills on the inside. Maidana is incapable of throwing an inside punch; he has no power on the inside. This is why Ortiz was so effective on the inside and was able to score three knockdowns in the first two rounds of the fight.
Maidana’s corner reacted with intelligent strategy, they knew their fighter was limited on the inside, they knew he was powerless there, therefore they instructed Maidana to tie up Ortiz and not let him fight on the inside. Ortiz should have wrestled with Maidana and kept the fight in close, Ortiz would have easily knocked out Maidana this way. Yet Victor’s trainers told him to box from the outside, the most flawed strategy, since Victor really doesn’t know how to box, and Maidana is most dangerous when he has full leverage. Victor was confused; he didn’t know whether to follow his instincts or to follow his corner’s instructions. Caught in this inner conflict, Victor was paralyzed and wilted under Maidana’s pressure. I say pressure and not punch, because Maidana didn’t land most of his punches in the last round, if he landed any they were not solid punches. Victor lost the fight because he was paralyzed with confusion. Victor’s fighter instincts were pointing to victory; his corner was promoting suicide.
After the fight Victor was still bewildered. Ortiz’s trainers and the commentators made him believe that he was stopped because he didn’t box from the outside. Ortiz now believes that it was he who made the mistake in strategy; he now distrusts his fighting instincts. On the contrary, Victor’s instincts were not wrong; fighting on the inside was the key to victory. It was only when he tried to fight on the outside -standing straight up- that he lost ground to the slugger Maidana.
The tragedy of Victor Ortiz is that he has great potential but believes that his instinct is untrustworthy. It was not his instinct that failed Ortiz, it was his corner. Victor needs desperately to find the right trainer, an intelligent trainer, who can teach him the fine art of boxing. He can continue his relationship with the Garcias as a foster family and friend, but he cannot put his boxing future in their hands. He will do so at his own risk.
This fifteenth of May, Victor Ortiz will face his next big test against Nate Campbell -an old, faded fighter. Yet Campbell still has the reputation of being a dangerous opponent for any prospect, because he knows how to intimidate mentally the younger fighters. Victor should be able to win easily and score a knockout over Campbell. After this fight Victor should seriously consider finding a capable trainer. Victor Ortiz has the potential of becoming another Arguello or another Zarate, but not with the Garcias.

He just didn’t have enough heart. Even if he lost, I would have expected a person promoted as vicious to fight no matter how many cuts on your face there are until the referee says so. Not let the doctor tell you to quit. Having heart is half the requirement for being a great fighter unfortunately hes come short.
Matrix – I agree but the issue here is that he LOST… and lost badly… and looked bad…. as a headliner on HBO. When you lose like that you don’t get a chance to continue going against the best. Nate said you earn it… but he earned that loss and needs to make some changes to gain some integrity with a tough minded trainer…
but everyone fires their trainers after they lose i like vic but until they stop worrying about his record and actually put him in fights like maidana is the only way hes going to ever achieve championship status like nate said your not given championship status you earn it
Great Article thank you for the perspective.
Victor Ortiz needs a trainer who can harden and challenge him. Once Oscar signed Victor he saw what boxing can do for him…. but lost some of the viciousness when surrounded by the suits and ties. I believe he can succeed with Ann Wolfe as his trainer. She knows what it takes to be Champion (a title holder in 4 weight classes). She knows what raw knockout power is (I present Wolfe vs Ward where she knocked her unconscious in the ring). She knows how to train (she’s guiding Kirkland up the ranks of GBP). And most of all, (like Ortiz) – she knows struggle (lost her mother to cancer at 17 and father was shot and killed dealing on the street, caring for her younger siblings – she was homeless for a while until boxing saved her life).
She has a 100% blood, sweat and tears mentality to training… if anyone can relate to Victor from having an rough upbringing and bring out the best in him, it would be Ann.
GPB has raw talent in Ortiz and a trainer without her top boxer. Someone please make this happen!!!
this ortiz is in the wrong sport
victor ortiz and buddy mcgirt, could be a great duo!
HIS FIGHT WITH MAIDANA SHOW THAT MAIDANA ALSO HAD A PUNCH BUT HE HAD THE HART TO TAKE ONE AS WELL.ORTIZ HAS A PUNCH,ENGLISH AND A PROMOTER WHO SAW A LITTLE OF HIS SELF IN THE KID.
This kid is shot mentally. He is going to be the next fernando vargas, he will beat all c list fighters but no top fighters. They didnt handle his career properly!
“Maidana is incapable of throwing an inside punch; he has no power on the inside.” Yet he cut Victor’s right eye, when Maidana was on the ropes and they was trading on the inside.
That’s ok, whatever heart Victor Ortiz has left Nate will dine on the rest of it. Nate is older but he is a truth finder. Ortiz being the younger fighter should be able to keep the order in the ring but if can’t he will drown just like did against Maidana. Much respect for putting him in there. Sink or Swim. Never said GBP ever had a witness protection program. Shout out to Bob Arum.
This will be a great fight.
i pity this ortiz!gbp keeps on throwing him to the wolves!he must develop first a character for himself!boxing is not just boxing,it’s a state of mind,an uncommon valor!the strength of mind in determining danger!if he loses again by a ko i hope that is not the end of his career!gbp concerns is only for a money!
@ john
so it is ok for a champion to quit, is that what you are saying? but if you aint a champ and you quit its a different story?
Ortiz will go far in boxing, of that i have no doubt.
lex-fugitive u really know absolutely zilch abt boxing
Otiz has enough skills, power and intelligence to be Champ with any trainer, however a great trainer would almost guarantee a championship. Ortiz is that good! He currently has at least a 50% chance against any fighter at 140, but with great training I would favor Ortiz against anyone at 140, including Bradley, Alexander, Khan, Maidana and eventually Valero. I might be wrong, but let them fight to see who wins.
Victor Ortiz should retire. If you look at his last two fights since Marcos Maidana. He appears to be shot fighter. I believe boxing may be too dangerous for him now.
jerry;
Khan looks the same as he did before hiring Roach. The only difference is he hasn’t fought a power puncher with Roach in his corner. Look at Khan’s fights before and after Roach, there really isnt a difference.
Meanwhile Amir Khan shamefully avoids any real challenge whatsoever and he is headlining the whole event!
Ortiz has overcome tougher odds than what he’s facing right now, I do agree he needs a change of scenery in his corner… If he sticks with Garcia’s he’ll end up bein another Vargas, no disrespect to EL FEROZ, but he’s only 31 & completely out of the game… Better not sleep on Ortiz, my guess is hell be World Champ soon enough… perhaps in a prize fight with Saul Alvarez, another guy u should keep an eye on!
I didn’t like the body language I was seeing – it wasn’t just that he just quit or whatever – he GAVE UP. Totally surrendered. It wasn’t like he sort of contemplated it and went back and forth. He just gave up so quickly. Because he was getting the crap beat out of him. How’s that going to translate in future fights when he finds himself in deep water again, with another slugger? Because guaranteed, if he has a long career in boxing, he’ll find himself in that situation again. Will he at least dig deep and give it a shot? Or is he going to react exactly as he did with Maidana and give up?
I think Ortiz will become a world champion one day. If he had just boxed against Maidiana I think he would have won, he was well ahead on the scorecards.
I think he will beat Campbell and then maybe move onto a rematch with Maidiana or maybe a shot at Khan.
@ john
i guess Robert Duran was also quitter right?
Plenty of champions have quit on there stools, it doesnt mean they werent great fighters.
Ortiz was knocked down 3 times from the biggest puncher in that weight division and still climbed off the canvas….. that alone takes a lot of heart.
Ortiz loses and everyone thinks he’s done but I think he rebounds and becomes World Champ
ortiz needs a world class trainer behind him… just look at how roach has brought on khan
