By Eric Hernandez: As I await tonight’s welterweight battle I find myself asking Why. Why would Manny Pacquiao risk a big money fight With Floyd Mayweather by fighting a guy in Joshua Clottey. That will be extremely difficult to look good against, he has a tough chin and his defense will make it difficult for Pac Man to dominate him the way he dominated both Oscar Dela Hoya and Miguel Cotto.
I think in his attempt to prove to Mayweather that he didn’t need him he went out and sought a name fighter without thinking of the risk involve. In contrast Mayweather took an opponent (Mosley) with more name recognition who is well respected and was last seen destroying Margarito, So again Mayweather gets the upper hand. What should Pacman have done instead?
He should have played it safe and taken an opponent with low risk where he can look good while he waits out Mayweather, or if he really wanted to upstage Mayweather while still getting his mega fight then he should have opted to fight Berto. If he beats berto then Mayweather would have no choice but to come after the pacman or forever be known for ducking him.
The better play would have been to fight as a junior welterweight and challenge Amir Khan who brings in the crowd from Europe and is a more engaging personality than Clottey. Could you imagine a 24/7 starting Amir Khan? Let’s face it this fight has no business being on pay per view but such is the state of boxing, 30 years ago this fight would have been fought on a Saturday afternoon on CBS.
Having said all that I expect pacman to win this fight going away based purely on his hands speed but if he allows Clottey to rough him up or worst if Clottey does not respect his punching power then don’t be sruprise if Clottey wins this fight by decision. For the sake of boxing I be rooting for Pacman to win because I think boxing needs a Pacman-Mayweather maga fight and I just hope that somewhere in this fight weather it’s in the middle of a round or worst while visiting the canvas Pacman doesn’t find himself asking the same question I posed, Why?

Hey Eric! Get your TIMELINE straight.
Pac couldn’t fight Berto because he was slated to fight Mosley. So Pac signed up with Clottey. Then the Haiti earthquake happened and Berto cancelled their fight with Mosley. So Mayweather picked up Mosley.
IF the earthquake happened BEFORE the negotiations with Mayweather was called off, then I think Pac would have fought Mosley.

What I learned is that Freddie Roach is very adept at picking punching bags that come forward. Clottey is the biggest punching bag of all time. Go back and look how many times that slow punching bag hit Pacquiao. More than anyone ever before. Imagine how many times he would get hit by a slick, speedy boxer?
Pacquiao only has one direction to go with his next fights…To the African Americans. I know he fought an African, but there is a HUGE difference!!!
One more thing, when you watch pac man fight you can actually see him enjoy the fight, he likes to fight anf you can see that, i dont see that with alot of fighters, its funny coz he seems like a nice guy
Well if you cant see the reason why the pac man had a fight with clottey, i guess you no nothing about boxing, his just getting ready for a fight with mayweather, clottey is really defensive and pac hasn’t really had a fight with any one like this before so its good experience, man i love watching pac man fight, i dont care what any ones says, fighters like pac man are the reason boxing is still alive and the reason why i love boxing so much, keep it up pac.
Well, I guess you have your answer, Mr. Hernandez. Manny Pacquiao is proving everybody wrong. He not only defeated a a top class welterweight, he made him look terrible. You should be questioning Floyd Mayweather Jr. as too why he won’t follow the commission rules and get his cowardly ass in the ring. Be a true writer and question the facts not fantasy!

It’s a baseless accusation. You cannot just accuse a man and ask him to prove his innocence. Mayweather has to come up with a solid proof to support his claim (Burden of Proof) that the man is using PEDs and if he doesn’t have any he better shut up, man the fk up and fight.
Pacquiao and Roach proves only sizes in boxing don´t matter as long as you train hard. No excuses for all Pacquiao haters to say that all Pacquiao wins from previous fight doesn´t count. Clottey is a true welterweight boxer, no cathweight, he is not old or shot or finish or whatever Pac haters want to call it. About Mayweather asking for 14 days random drug test, Pacquiao wants 24 days but be aware that Pacquiao did tested 19 days b4 fight with Clottey, so compromise maybe happening in Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight. UNLESS if Mosley wins, there´s no importance to fight Mayweather at all.

I love boxing but I was very dissapointed. It was the first time I’ve started yawning during a Pacquiao fight.
If Clottey had let his hands go this could have been a competitive (well, more competitive) event. What if Clottey got countered & Pac knocked him on his behind? So what. He’s a tough guy but no one has ever mistaken him for an elite fighter.
Clottey came to collect a check, no more, no less.
On a positive note; The fact the fight drew over 50,000 attendance shows boxing still has a pulse & could potentially draw large numbers & gain fans if events were held in big venues around the country.
Will that happen? Personally I think Arum is perfectly happy riding in his limo the six miles from his house to the MGM & receiving a fat site fee from the casino. This event seemed an attempt by Arum to clean the egg off his face when Goldenboy & Co. cancelled a meeting with Jerry Jones, billionaire stadium owner, during the Pac/ Mayweather negotiations.
Arum wants a seat at the next Billonaire Boys Club Barbeque down in good old Texas & kissin Jones a** is a sure way to confirm an invitation.

Clottey was tough and he came to win the fight but knew if he let his guard down it would be game over.
He did have some success but only because Pac Man was so relaxed and open.
Pacquiao is just in a different league to anyone else in the world as a puncher. Only Mayweather may be clever enough to come close to beating him and even then I think Pac would outwork Mayweather.
I’m not surprised. Manny beat another tomatoe can. Congrats to him though. A win is a win, and it’s easy for us to sit here and talk about how easy Clottey is to beat. I will say this; Floyd needs to man up. I don’t like Floyd. I don’t like Manny. I do however, love boxing. Floyd better bring his a game, and be ready to engage. As I watched this fight, I thought of something. What if Manny picked this defensive, counterpuncher, peek-a-boo type fighter in Clottey, to get ready for Floyd…another defensive counterpuncher. Floyd needs to put this sh/t aside and fight Manny. Clottey did, and he’s still standing. If Floyd is what he says he is, he needs to prove it. Personally, I think the best fight for your $ is Mosley, an offensive guy, who will KEEP COMMING. Floyd will pot shot, and dance, Shane will engage, and react, when hit. I think Shane can beat Floyd, and Manny. I have no prob admitting when I’m wrong. If I am, I will concede.
On Clottey, I said from the beginning, that Manny would probably win. Now HE needs to step up, and pick a REAL WW champ, Mosley or Mayweather. Mayweather needs to let go of this blood issue, as Clottey asked for no test, and hew’s still alive. If Clottey can survive, and Floyd’s supposed to be better, he should prove it.

I think you had a question here. And I think you just got your answer. For those who think what Manny did tonight was outclass a bum, you don’t know or are too blind to understand boxing.
For a much smaller opponent than Clottey, Manny managed to scare the MUCH bigger and stronger guy so much so that he refused to let his hands go for fear of being knocked out. Manny used all of his energy throwing 100+ punches per round because that was the ONLY way to win this fight.
I think this is as impressive as a knockout. And I think it also lays a significant road map for a Mayweather match-up, which is predicated on gloves-up defense and counter punching. The question is, with Manny so busy, Floyd not as strong as Clottey, and Floyd more prone to opening himself up to Manny’s shots…. what can FLOYD do to win a round on the judge’s scorecards?
That is beginning to look more and more like a mismatch to me. Manny doesn’t give a damn about looking bad, he’s going to throw punches and do what EVER it takes to win a round.
Short of Floyd knocking out Manny, I’m beginning to see why maybe Mayweather ended up NOT fighting Manny tonight.

why can’t you accept that pacquiao does not only fight for money and he wants to show that he is a risk taker. why he needs to fight a low risk figther when he can fight somebody like clottey. again, if he chose a low level, low risk fighter his critics (like you) will say he is cherry picking his opponent. why can’t you just be contented that the guy is a risk taker and not a safety first fighter? and another thing, is mosley and berto available at that time when the negotiation between mayweather fell apart? isn’t it mosley and berto had a schedule to fiht each other on last week of january and had not for that unfortunate incident in haiti, the fight will not be cancelled? is ti difficult to understand the choice of clottey then? or you really do not respect one’s choice and decision that you wanted to impose to them what you want them to do? isn’t it?
because Pacquiao is a guy who wants to push himself and isn’t afraid to take a risk. He’s a legend.
I hate all these writers that are on Golden Boy staff. just sit back relax and enjoy the fight. And on a side note I’ve been to many fights in Las Vegas and the crowd size for the undercards is always a sad sight…..I once went to Puerto Rico and caught a fight and you should see the crowd for the undercard fights. It’s amazing to see that much support.
