Roach: “A knockout in the 9th is likely” for Pacquiao over Clottey
By Sean McDaniel: Freddie Roach is predicting a knockout win for his fighter World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao against Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KO’s) for their March 13th fight at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium. In an article at GMA News, Roach says “A knockout in the 9th is likely.” Pacquiao has the right opponent for him to get a knockout. Clottey, 32, is someone that likes to hang on the ropes, and doesn’t throw a lot of punches. In other words, Clottey is like a heavy bag with gloves. Pacquiao should be able to beat this guy unless Clottey suddenly develops stamina, a work rate and ability to not lay on the ropes.
Clottey is tough in that he sticks around for the full 12 rounds in his fights and lands an occasional nice shot during the first half of his bouts. He can land with some power with his left hand and make for a rough fight during the first six rounds, but after that Clottey becomes much less effective as he tires out.
Pacquiao seems not to care whether he knocks Clottey out or not, saying “It doesn’t matter to me. I do 30 rounds everyday in the gym, and the fight is only 12 rounds, so going over 12 rounds is not a problem for me.”
That’s a refreshing perspective by Pacquiao. At least he’s not putting pressure on himself to have to try and stop Clottey, because a knockout might not come in this fight. Clottey can take a heck of a shot, and doesn’t leave himself open all that much because of his high guard that he uses. Clottey mostly puts his energy on defending, and isn’t the type that takes chances like Ricky Hatton, who Pacquiao destroyed in two rounds last year in May. Hatton tried throwing hooks and was taken out by Pacquiao.
Bob Arum of Top Rank, who just happens to be promoting both Pacquiao and Clottey in this fight, has this to say: “It’s going to take all that. Manny has to beat Clottey, no less knock him out. I would be much more surprised if Manny knocks him out. I look for this to be a distance fight. I don’t know how you knock Clottey out.” Arum says that he would seek an immediate rematch between Pacquiao and Clottey should Clottey be able to pull off a huge upset and beat Pacquiao.

Freddie Roach is on the wrong business; he should’ve been a Circus fortune teller! If I hear one mire prediction from thus guy! We know you’re only trying to take the focus off of Pacquaio and the PED’s!
@ Lex_fugitive. It makes no difference, what the odds for either fight was or is!
Marquez is a lightweight, that could never be considered a welterweight, and at 36, was well past his prime. The fight against Marquez was a tacticle decision, fight and beat someone in the pound for rankings, and Mayweather apparently becomes a top welterweight again.
Pacquiao, however, is facing a true welterweight in Clottey, who has always given the top guys trouble. Can Mayweather say that he’s faced the same level of competion at welterweight, that Pacquiao has? Cotto and Clottey, represent a more difficult challenge than anything Mayweather has faced, in the significantly longer period of time, he’s spent at the weight.
i love manny but im nervous for him in this one heart says manny for some reason gut tellin me clottey hope im wrong though
Manny by TKO in the 10th
btw, manny is afraid of the klistchos and evan calderon..
go lex…post more pls…
Mayweather was a ducker and cherry-picker for facing a hall of famer that he was a 4-1 favorite against. Pacquiao is a 6-1 favorite. Quack, quack, quack, if Mayweather cherry-picked for being a 4-1 favorite, doesn’t that make Pacquiao even guilter??? Now May 1 the two top welterweights will clash, and Pacduck couldn’t be happier to have such an easy fight.
I call a knock out too,around their 7 to 9,or 2 knock down.
I been spot on calling, on a 5 roll now, lets see this, fight around the corner, also cottey,is just playing lame,he is in the best shape ever. this is going to be a full on action fight, but pac all-way as a champ rise higher.
Well I just thought I’d pose a question to the bloggers. If Pacquiao doesn’t win by KO, would it undermine the win? Would the fight lack excitement?
Just a thought, curious to hear what people have to say. Personally I’m not sure, it would have to depend on how the fight goes.
As much as I respect Roach, he does tend to go over the top with his predictions. Clottey’s far too big, strong and defensively well-rounded, for Pacquaio to knock him out.
Pacquiao’s being over rated for his previous achievements, in which he hasn’t faced anyone as tough as Clottey!
Pacquaio by unanimous or split decision, and no more than that.
An upset could shake up the boxing world in the WW division!
A loss could also cost Pacquiao the election for sure.
The fight is a week away, so we’ll see. There is going to be a lot of “I told you so” come Sunday. Hindsight is 20/20.
To me, this fight has “Upset” written all over it! I smell Clottey making something happen. I know by looking at the way things should end up, we can’t see that happening but it I do not think a KO by Pacquiao will occur.
At the very least…Pacquiao will struggle with Clottey!!! We may see Pacquiao confused, hurt, and pushed to the limit to squeak out a GIFT decision!
but other than that, I agree with what you say.
dayammm- one side note to your post……there will be no catchweight for this fight…….Clottey can enter the ring weighing as much as he wants to……….he will probaly enter the ring somewhere closer to 160lb where he feels stronger.
I actually wouldn’t be surprised at a late round knockout. Clottey at 147 just doesn’t have the energy or stamina for the championship rounds, he runs out of gas. Combine that with a limited offense, a weak and rarely used jab, and a bad habit of sitting on the ropes, he’s going to be behind on the cards early. On top of that, he has a tendency to come in with a high guard shell and let opponents fire away with complete combos before he even attempts a counterpunch. Someone described him as a heavy bag with gloves, and they’re not far off with that description. He’s durable, but I wouldn’t consider him much of a threat. At the very least, I’m happy he’s getting a big payday out of it. I just hope the fight stays clean, without any controversies over headbutts or at worst, a premature stoppage because of a cut opened by one.
lex,
Ok…you said ROACH said Mosley was too good. Then you say MANNY is the scared one? Manny didn’t say it, he’d fight anyone, and at that time he didn’t test himself against Cotto yet. Once Manny demolished Cotto, I’m sure Roach gained confidence. Hater.
There is no question in my mind that Freddie Roach, and Bob Arum, want one BIG payday in the final fight with Mayweather that they know they will lose. No way will they fight a top tier fighter other than Mayweather because for one, Minny will lose, and the big payday will then be gone. Ultimately, Minny will have to take the tests, and they will get the big payday they seek, Minny will lose and retire for good!
Roach also said Mosley is too good for Manny. Just shows that Manny is scared of the top tier boxers out there. Mosley is too good, then develops a superstition out of nowhere that only lasts as long as Mayweather negotations lasted, and now he’s fighting Clottey. Manny has an excuse to not fight any of the best. And now that he’s getting called out for his cherry-picking and people are demanding he fight real top-tier opposition Manny is talking about retirement.
Joshua Clottey, the world is at your finger tips! Find out what it takes inside yourself. KO Pacquiao and the would and everything in it belongs to you!
Just do it!
i hope ssm and jc will come out victorious.
Junior. True. The only reason Manny has looked so good, is that he fights these guys that want to bang, but are slower than him. It’s entertaining, but he would never make it against a world classer like Maweather, Mosley, Colazzo, Martinez. Probably not even Berto. Berto is a little green, but very fundamental. Pac lacks fundamentals, and is technically flawed. Hopefully Clottey can expose that. Probably wont happen until he takes a big fight, which he has not had yet. He’s had the whole vegas thing, but not a big fight, in the sense that he’d be fighting somebody out of his comfort zone. To me, that’s a little cowardly. To only fight guys you’re comfy fighting. If a guy in the street stepped to you, and you suspected he would be a challenge to fight, do you run, or do what dogs do? That’s what I expect from somebody who calls himself the p4p best, I expect it from Manny, AND Floyd. But that’ll be another day I guess. It’s not because I don’t like him that I want his flaws to be exposed, it’s because everybody is on this Manny ban wagon, and my boxing experience, and the rules of this perfected science tell me that he’s less than great. Entertaining is one thing, but greatness is another. Now Floyd, I don’t like, and would like to see Shane dismember him.
My fault I meant cuz I meant hes beating these guys cuz he has more skills than them
@ Fighter. I agree with you man! Not that I dont like the guy but he said it himslef ” size dont win fights, skill does.” So I’m not impressed that he is beating this bigger guys because they have more skill than him. I pac faces a durable counter puncher he gonna get whooped. he kicked cottos ass but cotto made the mistake of trying to stand in front of the guy. when he moved his head and used lateral movement pac was open for some hard counter shots cotto just didnt have the skill to throw/ land em enough, he landed somegood counters tho. thats why i cant wait to see him fight a boxer/counterpuncher. Roach is no different than Floyd, he runs his mouth like an idiot, probably becasue hes all messed up so he wants to go out with a bang. Success spoils people maybe he saw that he was winning so it was ok to act like they people they talk about most.
hoping for a good fight
Roach said tha same prediction when PAC againts cotto,,, he said k.o on 9rnd… Will c this time… But i think he’s rite.. i’ll go 4 PAC at 9rnd.. Same as cotto fight.. At tha beggining is showdown., but eventually! Josh get tired.. N it will b finish on 9rnd.. With a straight left hand
I meant to say that Margarito ko’ed Cotto, and Cotto got the descision over Mosley. Had to clear that up…not like you all did’nt know, just tryin to make a point.
Boxing would be pretty boring, and subject to cheating if only fighters from certain stables, fought other fighters of the same stable. I think Floyd went too far with this blood issue, and now, he looks scraed, as Clottey is more willing to fight. But Manny will look like the chicken if he does not fight either Floyd, or Mosley. And it could happen that way. Styles make fights. Mosley later knocked out Margarito, and Margarito previously knocked out Cotto, who was knocked out by Margarito. Go figure.
Bob Arum is the past in boxing. the torch needs to be passed. He’s a cleaner version of Don King…slightly.iness can be done alot better, but he’s stubborn.
Freddie is getting a bit too big for his britches. He always seems to have a negative report on somebody. A trainer, a fighter. It’s starting to urk me a bit. He does what alot of people in this buisiness do; he talks sh/t about the guy, who his fighter then beats, and calls Manny a world beater afterwards. If these fighters are so easy, then maybe your fighter is not all that you say he is. Freddy knows this. That’s why he only picks flatfooted, come forward fighters for Manny. Shane called out Manny before this Clottey deal. Freddy wanted no part of it.
Alot of Pacquiao fans’s look at Mayweather as the enemy because of the comments he’s made about Pacquiao, but take a good look at Bob Arum, just for a quick second. Try to understand why Mayweather jr, and Dela Hoya both left. Now look at the 25% of Pacquiao’s purse that he’s taking and you have found your answer. Bob Arum is the real person we should hear Pacquiao fan’s complaining about not some guy name Mayweather who either way can’t take Manny’s money no matter what he says.
DjDon. The odds are against him, but I too think Clottey will do better than predicted by many. He actually has a better chin than Manny, if you look back at their fights.
FINALLY! Excuse my enthusiasm, but I stepped away for a minute, and am happy with what I came back to. A bunch of fair, level responses.
@Preston, I agree. I hope Clottey does’nt think he’s that good or accurate, and Manny’s that sloppy, because the math on that one makes no sense. I was thinking the same thing when I read it yesterday. Hopefully, he has a better plan, and is playing head games. If he can get Manny to train for a particular thing, and give him a different look than he’s expecting, he can confuse Manny, who does not take direction well from his corner when he’s flustered. I’ve seen this before w/him.
Clottey is well aware of what’s at stake here and I’m not saying that he’s gonna destroy manny but I will say it’ll be a lot closer than what roach coach is predicting. Clotteys NO SLOUCH. Don’t be suprised if Clottey upsets the world in Dallas. However, if I had to bet,, the safest bet is Pac by UD, because speed kills and that pac has.
fighter. I like your optimism. I will be rooting for Clottey in this one, but his comments about allowing Pac to throw 30 punches ( which he said that he would block most of them), and only responding with 4 punches of his own, is a little bit disheartening to me. I have been trying to assert the positives with Clottey, and hype this fight up more than the average fan, but now I dont know, becasue it sems like at the very least that Clottey is conceding a UD to Pac……I just hope that Clottey has a better gameplan than just covering up, leaning on the ropes and waiting to get his shots off after every Pac blitzkrieg like attack, because if not, this will be a VERY one-sided bout.
First Roach said it will be a harder fight than Cotto, which went 11 rounds… Then its gonna be a knockout in 9?
Make up your mind Freddie!
If Clottey is not a good fighter then why are they fighting him?
It’s easy to see the pattern now they have been doing it since Pacquiao has come to fame. They fought Barrera, Morales, DLH who were all over the hill. Hatton was damaged goods along with Cotto. And now Clottey who is a decent fighter but not a top one like Mayweather or Mosley. I can guarantee that Pacquiao will not face Mayweather or Mosley he’s already ducked them both in the last 9 months.
Roach is really pising me off with is predictions, he has no respect for other fighters. Where has his mouth come from? a year ago he wasn’t sayin fk all.
England. I think so. This is the politics of boxing. If Clottey does’nt do something very impressive, he will not get the descision. If you saw the Hatton/Colazzo fight, or the Malinaggi/Diaz fight, or the Colazzo/Berto fight, they all headlined by up and coming, potential $ makers, so they were given a victory, even though they did’nt earn it. Probably the case here too.
If Clottey attacks the body early, this will slow the faster Manny down, and allow Clottey to impose his will more often. He CANNOTT abandon the body.
Clottey KO’d? You cannot be serious. Wont happen
If Clottey holds back in any way he’s going down sooner than the 9th!
To me all this nice guy talk from Clottey is not a good sign!
Clottey if i was u, I wouldn’t hold nothing back on that fight. Pacman is smaller than him so Clottey get that little guy on the ropes and blast off on him for the knockout.
I think this fight will go the distance. Pacquiao has the power to knockout defensless fighters. Clottey is like an armored car to a machine gun in pacman.
pac always go for a ktfo….
pac always go for destruction and ktfo.
