Pacquiao’s Perfect Performance

By Rasheed Catapang: “He had a good defense, but defense isn’t enough to win a fight,” Roach said. And that basically summed up the whole Pacquiao-Clottey Affair. The Event was – no small thanks to Clottey – uneventful.

His defense was too good for his own good. There was madness in his method. The method to his madness, however, was lost in that air-tight defense. Impenetrable as it was that almost nothing went in, nothing also went out. Clottey honed his defensive mastery to the extreme, almost possum-like, but thoroughly forgot that boxing also required a lot of punching in order to win.

Joshua Clottey was a caricature of a boxer that night – too bad to be real and too real to be believable.

That, however, just proved a point that The Event was never about the punching bag that was Clottey. It was, after all, about the whirlwind of a man in his opposite corner.

Perhaps that was also the reason Clottey appeared comical – not quite as being held down by the weight of his inneptitude but by the approaching onslaught that appeared to be perpetual. Across him was a man who’s really that good – make it great. At times a blur but almost always an exclamation point of force, Pacquiao was (in Clottey’s mind) one punch away from knocking him down.

Of course Clottey never went down. He was never knocked out. Nobody is expected to knock out a punching bag. Not even Pacquiao. And not even in Dallas.

The Event was a one man show. And we could not blame Pacquiao when it turned out a bore because in boxing, as in dance, it takes two to tango.

In Clottey’s defense – all pun intended – he’s also not entirely at fault. He was simply outclassed. (Big time because it happened in Dallas where, you know, everything’s big.) His failure to perform could be attributed to Pacquiao’s performance. Pacquiao, after all, is such a great fighter known to make even elite fighters look mediocre, if not downright bad. Why should Clottey be the exception?

Clottey was standing when the final bell rung. That must be, in Clottey’s mind, an accomplishment by itself. With Pacquiao’s recent run of havoc, it must indeed be. Congrats to Clottey also but we don’t want more of that.

“He had a good defense, but defense isn’t enough to win a fight,” Roach said of Clottey. He might as well have said it to goad another fighter.

The Event, for all its pomp and glory, was found wanting. It all goes back now to the fight we truly wanted. Everything now depends on Mayweather. If he survives Mosley and answers the call, he could – in spite of himself – really save boxing.

    Stop drinking Pacquiao’s kool aid. If u have bet on pacquiao always, then u have lost a bet as Pacquiao has losses. See what I did there? I’ve shown just how wrong u are.
    Now, from ur line of thinking, u should have bet on mayweather. The champ has zero losses. and that’s where the sure bet is.
    Just goes to show MAyweather beats Pacquiao all the time.

  • Zorro says:

    @henry potter
    What’s the matter? Have you backed up the wrong horse all this time? Next time bet on Pacquiao. I’ve never lost ever.

  • Zorro says:

    I like Clottey, he seems to be a nice guy. but did anybody notice that Clottey was trying to step on to Pac’s foot? He was probably timing Pac to shout “Ouch” and boom! Clottey would give him a thunderous punch and knock him out.
    “We thought Pacquiao is great, he is better than we thought” – Larry Merchant

  • henry potter says:

    @char
    i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, because some people just doesn’t get it, Pacquiao is no match against mayweather. it’s like heaven and earth.
    And yes, pacquiao will look that bad that covering his face is a preferrable exit!

  • Zorro says:

    @char
    Yeah, it’s true, Manny will have a hard time hitting Floyd’s head because he is running around the ring like a chicken without a head. Ha ha ah, Chicken-without-a-head, that’s a hoot!!

  • Zorro says:

    Hey, did you know that actor Robert Duvall came up to Pacquiao after the fight and said to him “You gotta fight Mayweather”. Then Robert whispered to his ear “You gotta knock that son of a b*itch out! Do it for the good of humanity.” Ok that last part if from me :)

  • RNC says:

    t3xA$ M@D3

    I think Floyd is probably the most technically gifted boxer of all time, but that isn’t the same as being the best. It may be cliche but you have to beat the best to be the best and Floyd just hasn’t done that.

    As you said though, haters always gonna hate, but Floyd does make it easy for them.

    Hatton done well against Floyd, he was light welter remember. Marquez may have got schooled but he came from two weight classes below Mayweather.

    Pac has his haters too of course though, but at least he is fighting guys at his weight or bigger. Someone earlier compared how Margarito done better against Clottey and threw more, but forgot to mention that Margarito threw more than anyone ever that night (all time compubox record) and that he has only ever fought at Welter or above.

    It’s always going to happen, I like both fighters but even that seems a cardinal sin these days.

  • lou says:

    I bet Delahoya dosn’t feel so bad now after Cotto and Clottey got beat downs.

  • char says:

    @henry potter.

    do you think pac will cover his face and do nothing while the chicken is throwing combos? i dont think so… pac will exchange blows.. in that exchange, someone will going down and that will be the chicken.

    you are a complete idiot if you will say pac will never land a punch to the chicken.. heck!.

  • char says:

    @pogita

    pac fight is not boring… clottey made it boring… if pac never thrown 1K+ punches, that was indeed a boring fight..

  • Alexia says:

    So Pacquiao got exposed by Clottey as no good according to MAyweather. And said PAc’s one dimensional. Why then won’t he get inside the ring with the little guy and beat him 9 ways to sunday.
    Floyd’s all talk, spews pure rubbish.

  • Alexia says:

    clottey was decisively beaten by Pacquiao. that said, mayweather will offer no resistance when and if they fight. pacquiao rules.

  • pogito says:

    now mayweather and pacquiao has something in common – both are boring…

  • henry potter says:

    let me reiterate one more time, pacquiao is no match for mayweather. it is best that THE FIGHT never happened, that way Pacquiao wont find out nor the people who believes him. Pacquiao looses to Floyd if ever they fight.

  • henry potter says:

    @mawatu
    pacquiao won’t be able to shadowbox against floyd. heck, he wont be able to do anything against floyd. pacquiao would only be at the receiving end for a barrage of punches from floyd. that’s the truth, no more no less.

  • Sabembe Mawatu says:

    I would probably see a different style of defense when Pacquiao-Mayweather fight happens.

    Clottey was covering and blocking punches with his gloves. Mayweather would use his running skills and avoiding punches. So Manny would have more shadow boxing with Mayweather than a punching bag with Clottey.

    Like what Manny said, his style varies according to different opponent sytles.

  • Sabembe Mawatu says:

    The fight was boring, but I don’t blame Pac for that. The guy (Clottey) just don’t want to get hit for $1.25M purse 10% of Pacquiao’s $12M purse. Clottey maybe happy to end his career with that money without enough bruise or KD. He lost the fight but he still won a jackpot.

  • henry potter says:

    @apd
    floyd was trying to get into pacquiao’s head to see what he’s got. now that floyd’s sure pacquiao’s of no concern, he’ll proceed to give ur chap the beating of his life.

  • henry potter says:

    @apd
    as sure as the sun rising tomorrow, floyd would school pacquiao. as he stated, pacquiao got exposed by clottey and i agree 100%. pacquiao is mediocre, mayweather is sublime. it’s a mismatch of epic proportions.

  • apd says:

    @henrypotter

    you sound as if you are pretty sure your boy will beat manny? hmmm but i think your boy has other things in mind. if he’s as sure as you are that he would beat manny then why not fight manny? drop the test issue and beat him up with all his greatness? or is he really that afraid to fight fighters on steroids? or should i say fighters he is accusing of using steroids? your words doesnt match what floyd is acting right now. he isnt that sure he can beat pac.

  • henry potter says:

    join the mayweather’s bandwagon coz he’s the real deal. pacquiao’s just another pretendr to floyd’s throne.

  • henry potter says:

    pacquiao’s a joke, really.
    wake up people, that performance is so-so. the ppv will surely show that. it looks scripted also, pathetic.
    pacquiao’s a joke, really.

  • henry potter says:

    Pacquiao made a pathetic performance and people praised it. Just gullible people. Floyd would make short work of pacquiao if they ever fight each other. though i doubt it because pacquiao has ready made excuses.

  • Nic says:

    @haku313
    If pacquiao fights certain fighters, floyd fights no fighters who could beat him.

  • Nic says:

    @ da truth
    ur ststistics clouds ur thinking. floyd’s accuracy is of no use because he just won’t fight the pacquiao. never. ever.
    clottey would be looking like an offensive genius when compared to floyd if he ever fights pacquiao.

  • Nic says:

    floyd must be fuming right now knowing he won’t win against pacquiao with the shutout he did on clottey. could any other top welterweight make clottey look that bad. No, he was competitive against margarito or cotto. pacquiao is just on a league of his own.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    After watching the undercard, Pacquiao told Arum, “I want to fight Castillo next.”

  • lex_fugitive says:

    Stuey;
    You’re right he didn’t have to fight Clottey. He coulda fought an A level fighter instead. But Manny wanted an easy win, watch Clottey’s other fights, he didn’t fight any different. Margarito threw 400 more punches than Manny did against Clottey and Clottey threw even less against Margarito than he did Manny.

  • waltz says:

    @ Haku313
    lol. you posted the same “hate” comments to numerous articles.

    while some are celebrating to Pacquiao’s victory, some are excited to the upcoming and future fights, you on the other hand is hating.

  • Realbox says:

    I guess some big name boxer will eventually grow old enough (retired like) for your chump to want to then drain him and fight him for your pleasure.

    I got a couple of guys who are willing to make a few millions for standing in the middle of the ring for his next fight, don’t worry, we’ll let him win, oh! and no random blood tests to worry about.

    Go on into politics man, leave the sport for the real fighters, you know, the non cherry picking ones.

  • t3xA$ M@D3 says:

    @ STUEY He didnt fight mayweather. never wanted to fight mosley till now. so i guess he doesnt wanna fight anyone

  • Stuey says:

    what makes manny great is that he will fight n e one simple as that,,,,he dident have to fight clottey but he likes to fight un like,,,other boxers scared of losing!!!!

  • t3xA$ M@D3 says:

    @ RNC I AGREE BUT I BELIEVE HE IS THE BEST RIGHT NOW. BUT I JUST WANT HIM TO PROVE IT TO PEOPLE THAT DON’T think he is.But he even proves it i think alot of these manny fans will always hate on mayweather no matter what.

  • DA THRUTH says:

    Do you think that mayweather would stand there and let pacquiao hit him ,i know that all you pacquiao nuthuggers would love that .for pacquiao to fight another stiff to look good against . you know what with a percentage like that my mother would fight him .
    Pacquiao threw 549 jabs but only landed 14 for a percentage of 3%.
    Clottey as boring as he did in this fight manage to threw162 jabs and landed 26 of them for a percentage of 16 %
    Like i said before Mayweather would NEVER have an output like this ST .
    And this is the best fighter of the year– BULL ST
    Try and make whatever excuse you can find to make , like it takes two to fight but when mayweather out class marquez you mention his weight.
    Did you know mayweather percentage punch for his fight with marquez total punch stats 62 % of mayweather punches landed did pacquiao do that .

  • RNC says:

    I’m not sure of your question, but I’m saying there were tougher fights out there for Floyd.

    Corley was beaten by Judah and his biggest win is probably against Randall Bailey, which was avenged anyway. Always came up short against guys like Cotto, Alexander and even Witter.

    Bruseles should never have really been in the same ring as Mayweather, if anyone can tell me why that was a title eliminator I’d love to hear it.

    Mitchell was a hot prospect for a while, but long before he met Floyd. Very unfortunate against Tszyu first time out, but totally destroyed in the rematch. Lasted twice as long against Floyd but was never going to win that one.

    Baldomir is probably seen as the best of the four, but only really due to two big wins, for the title against Judah and a smaller 40-7-0 Gatti. When Baldomir fought Floyd he was 43-9-6.

    It’s only my opinion, Mayweather is an amazing boxer I just wish he’d show us why he should be “the best”, because if he did, he probably would be.

  • Ryu says:

    Their is an arguement that can be made about who really are the good welter weights out their. Before Mosley fought Margarito me and my brother thought it was crazy they had Mosley as such an underdog cause we never saw Margarito or Cotto as being that good. Then we all know what happend in that fight. Right now their are only 4 people I would say are great welter weights right now: Paul Williams, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and Shane Mosley. Every body else are on the outside looking in. I never was the impressed with Cotto I just felt the man gets hurt way too much, even in alot of the fights he ended up winning. Margarito I knew once he faced somebody with great speed, movement, and a decent chin he would get exposed. I’m not even gonna go into why I don’t consider Clottey a great welter weight. As for Berto he’s just to inexperienced compared to the guys I named up top. It’s time for these guys to fight each other. It should be a 4 man tournament with all 4 fighters I just named above.

  • t3xA$ M@D3 says:

    @ RNC WHAT DO YOU MEAN? FANCY IS SAYING THOSE WERE NOBODIES?

  • RNC says:

    Sorry, I don’t even remember mentioning Clottey.

    One of them beat Zab Judah, is there a point here? :)

    I’m not going to go into boxing math here, I only brought up those four guys because it usually makes Mayweather fans realise that, although unbeleivably talented, he just isn’t fighting the top guys.

    I can’t wait for Floyd v Mosley, as much as I hate Floyds personality, I want him to put on a clinic and prove that he can beat the top guys at his weight. Someone with that much talent should showcase it.

  • Killa says:

    What’s even funnier is one of the guys on your list beat Clottey.

  • RNC says:

    t3xA$ M@D3

    DeMarcus Corley
    Henry Bruseles
    Sharmba Mitchell
    Carlos Baldomir

    Fancy telling me why Floyd Duckweather fought these world beaters, instead of some proper competition?

    Funny thing is, that list is the shortened version!

    :)

  • t3xA$ M@D3 says:

    @ KING MOMMY your right, he is at the pond.feedind the ducks.ONE of there names is FANNY DUCQUIAO. Cuz the last time i heard he didn’t sign the contract so he ducked mayweather.SUGAR SHANE challenged manny and manny and them ducked him to. So it looks like mayweather didnt duck manny or sugar.

  • KingDaddy6 says:

    Anyone seen Fraud Mayweather lately?
    Oh, there he is. He’s in the pond with all the other ducks.

  • t3xA$ M@D3 says:

    Yall manny fans are stupid,always saying mayweather wants to make a whole bunch of demands to get out of the fight peep this.MAYWEATHER wanted 60/40 MANNY WANTED 50/50(MANNY DON’t fight for money. lol)Mayweather agreed.Manny wanted a rediculous weight penalty of $10million for every pound over 147 they came in.Mayweather agreed.Manny chose the gloves.Mayweather agreed.Manny chose the size of the ring. Mayweather agreed.Mayweather ask for random blood test for both of them.Manny throws a hissy fit and the fight doesnt happen cause manny don’t wanna take a drug test.Then yall say mayweather don’t wanna fight mosely. Mayweather challenges him.Then yall say mayweather is going to demand alot of stupid things to mosely to get out of the fight.Mayweather ask mosely to take random blood test and Mosely accepts and the fight is going happen.Now yall say mayweather is finna lose and he most likely finna prove yall wrong again. So what yall wanna predict next?

  • Cam says:

    Style wise most people knew 2 things going in before hand 1) The chances of Clottey getting KO’D or stopped were very slim. 2) That Clottey has a history of not throwing enough punches. Those were 2 things we knew going in. So who here is suprised by the out come of this fight? Oh yeah I forgot to add that Clottey hasn’t had a KO victory in years, and the greatest achievement of his career was defeating Zab Judah for the IBF welterweight title. I can’t believe they had the nerve to put this fight in the Dallas Stadium, and on ppv like Pacquiao was actually facing a serious opponent. Andre Berto was even tweeting saying Clottey was just happy to be their. I’m glad I didn’t pay for that trash. Atleast May 1st even if Shane is outclassed we know he’s going for the KO no matter what and that’s more than I can say for Pacquiao’s opponent.

  • Anonymous says:

    do u know how gulible u guys are. the fights own promoter sayed clottey had no chance even if he took his gloves off n fought bare handed. and he sold u guys this garbage fight. ne body ever mentions that floyds fight gon b set up cuz theyr golden boy cant say it no mo cuz it looked like clottey came to get his check

  • Anonymous says:

    how could u call this a great performance?. by landing 20% of punches and missing a thousand. u miss a thousand against floyd and ur gettin picked apart

  • Haku313 says:

    People still dont get it?! Manny Pacquiao will only fight certain fighters! He WILL NOT fight Mosley,Mayweather, Valero, Bradley jr., Berto, etc… His next fight will be Margarito, a slow, flat footed, easy to hit fighter. Who just got his ass beat and hasnt faught in a year! This is Mannys IMO.

  • motownhitman says:

    Optimus Prime – Clottey is not past his prime he just isn’t that good to begin with.

  • Optimus Prime says:

    Pacquiao vs. Clottey was a joke even before it started. Clottey was not even in contention to be in the p4p list yet he was matched-up with the supposed no. 1 on the p4p list. Clottey was picked by Arum as an easy opponent for his overhyped pet. Clottey was just the last of the washed-up fighters who have recently lost handpicked by Arum to match-up with his favorite milking cow. Arum will never allow his pet to match-up with fighters on a winning streak. Pity all those 50,000 folks in Dallas duped by Arum to spend their hard earned money for tickets to watch a joke. Expect to see Pacquiao fighting the loser of the Mayweather-Mosley toss-up.

  • Free one says:

    He just did what he have 2 do.. Can’t knock him out, why not just beat him in scoring.. He knew he was winning.. But he still keep coming, he even invite clottey, but doesn’t wanna pull tha trigger. He just wanna show tha fans a good show n make money worth.. If tha fight is boring!!! That is not his fault..

  • motownhitman says:

    First of all Pac didn’t even throw as many punches as Margarito did when he fought Clottey. Secondly it is worth noting that Pac did not do anything that most expected him to do which was throw a lot of punches. Why is it that Pac is getting all this credit from beating a guy who has NO offense?? I said from the get go Clottey is a poor man’s version of Winky Wright because at least Winky throws punches. Before the fight people were talking about how Clottey would be an exciting opponent…oh really? Since when has he EVER been exciting? Pac gets more credit for his win over Hatton than he does his win over Clottey. He at least fought Hatton at his natural weight not after coming off a lost. Pac fought a DLH that was 10 past fighting at 147, a Cotto that was weight drained and Clottey who had last lost to Cotto and Cotto only had one eye! I’m all for excitement but people need to be a little more objective when they allow skill to be overlooked by a media sensation.

  • Art says:

    Manny has proven that he’s the best in the business and did not bore the fans. He could have easily dance around Clottey who could not come out of his shell but did not because he wanted to show the fans some excitement. Bring on Mosley who is a lot more exciting boxer than Mayweather who is a boring one.

  • Mike says:

    Clottey gace Pac no choice but to keep punching and win by being busy as Clottey seemed to come to cover up and last the distance!? The thing is Clottey did manage to show some weaknesses in Manny,weaknesses that FMJ will exploit when they fight!

  • Anonymous says:

    People want to give Clottey credit for going the distance but i cant do that.

    Clottey said that Pacquiao’s power didnt bother him it was his speed. If thats the case why did he fight like a coward? Clottey proved once again that he has absolutely no fighting spirit.

    At least other victims of Pacquiao went out on thier shields.

  • KAM says:

    I think there is a new GREATEST in town and thats Manny Pacaquio, what made ALI great is what he had to overcome as a person outside the ring as well as in, but if where now talking just ring credentials and pedegree in the sport of boxing I would say pacman is the greatest beacaue of his 7 weight achievement.

  • mika says:

    where do the pacquiao go from here. There’s no one left but mosley or mayweather. truly amazing, the stuff of legend

  • boxer 101 says:

    It was a bad showing for Clottey. He didn’t want to take a chance for the sake of not getting knocked out. It’s the reason nobody’s watching him fight.

  • patpump says:

    He did exactly what he should have done under the circumstances……..He’s Great
