Mosley: “”I’m going to knock him [Mayweather] out” – News

By Eric Thomas: World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s) made it clear how serious he is about his May 1st bout against unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr., saying “I don’t play. I give 100 percent. I’m going to give everything that I have. Mayweather knows that.” Mosley, now thirty-eight, has wanted to get a shot at a big money fight against Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao for the past few years but has been virtually ignored by them for some reason. It seemed like he was never going to get a shot against either of them until recently when Mayweather was unable to negotiate a fight with Pacquiao.

Mosley was supposed to be fighting WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto on January 30th, but when he pulled out of the fight weeks before that due to a catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, which killed some of his extended family members, it left Mosley without an opponent at the same time that Mayweather came available. Mayweather still likely wouldn’t have fought Mosley if not for Pacquiao choosing Joshua Clottey, a highly ranked welterweight, on March 13th. This put a lot of pressure on Mayweather to have to fight someone good or better. Mayweather then decided to take Mosley as an opponent finally after all this time.

Mosley sounds a little peeved at being ignored for so long, commenting “I was waiting for a year to fight either one of these guys. Did they care if I was going to wait? No. But it’s the fans who are going to benefit from this fight.”

Pacquiao and his management weren’t particularly interested in fighting Mosley either, even after he said he would be willing to drop down in weight and fight Pacquiao at a catch weight. Instead, Pacquiao’s team chose Miguel Cotto, a fighter who had been recently badly beaten up by Antonio Margarito in an 11th round stoppage in 2008.

Speaking about Mayweather, Mosley says “I’m going to knock him out. I can’t wait to get into the ring and dig my teeth into Mayweather. It’s going to be the fight of the decade.” Mosley stands to make a lot of money in the Mayweather fight after the pay per view numbers are in. And if Mosley can beat Mayweather, he will get an even bigger payday against Pacquiao if the Filipino fighter and his management are interested in pitting him against Mosley. Pacquiao has expressed interest in fighting Mosley, and even thinks he’s going to beat Mayweather on May 1st. A fight between Mosley and Pacquiao would be huge, and it’s a fight that would likely take place in the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, like the Pacquiao-Clottey fight.

Mosley makes it clear that he intends on giving Mayweather his first defeat, saying at the press conference “May 1 symbolizes something. After this fight, it is going to be clear. It is going to be the date of Mayweather’s first loss.”

Mayweather is going to have to step up to the plate and show more in the way of offensive work rate if he wants to beat Mosley. He isn’t going to beat Mosley by pot shotting all night long. Mayweather is going to have to mix it up and throw a lot of punches, something he hasn’t done a lot of in the past seven years.

I just watched the cotto-mosley fight. Mosley doesn’t stick his jab…he paws with it….then tries to land the big right hand. Floyd knows this so he won’t stand in front of shane like margo did. Mosley was tight the rounds 1-4 and this could cost him in this fight as well. For those who says floyd “runs”…wake up. you prove nothing by standing and getting your brains beat out to the point you can’t talk when your career is over. look what happen to meldrick taylor against chavez. the worst thing he could have done was won the fight…but probably wouldn’t have been able to enjoy it. now he can barely speak; neither can joe frazier, ken norton..ali..they took too many many to the dome. big ups to floyd for being smart.

    @juan aussie

You sir, are an idiot… That is all…

  • Pierce says:

Shane was a great fighter before he even began using the PED’S. He actually won more fights before the Balco situation than after, and he even stated that. I know you don’y like Floyd Juan, but a win over Shane Mosley would establish anybody as one of if not the best welter weight in the division. Just telling the truth.

  • kevin says:

If you do it and knock him out shane then beat pac man your place in history will be cemented.Youll be ranked in the top 10 of all time.I still think Floyd is going to be a no show rib injury is my call.

  • tiger1223usa says:

hatton stuned fm i did not beleive it until i watched it on you tube

  • tiger1223usa says:

lets not forget floyed talked his way through the ww division shane mosley fought his way .fm has not fought as many ww as shane so you cant say floyed is a great ww at this time. vernon forest vs fm who wins?

  • asif says:

mayweather is a technician. He has reflexes and a ‘lightning jab’. It does not matter how big mosley is come fight night. Floyd is going to make mosely miss in the early rounds and become desperate. People who follow boxing should know shane really struggles against boxers and fighters that do not brawl. I only wish a prime winky wright fought floyd cause that would be a fight i would want to see.

  • Ash says:

@ Lex_fugitive. What the hell are you talking about? Mosley afraid of Mayweather…oh yeah Mosley must afraid of Mayweather’s Earth shattering power, haunted by the thought of all those knock-outs against top-flight welterweights. LOL
Ask yourself these pertinent questions (and try to be honest); who hasn’t Mosley fought? ; When losing fights, why would he want a rematch? The answer to both these questions is pretty obvious (even to you). Shane Mosley’s a real fighter, one who’ll fight anyone, anytime, anywhere, that’s why he gets more respect from neutral fans (and is constantly refered to as a throw-back fighter).
As for the toothache fallacy, I’ve only ever come across that in writting and it’s always written Mayweather’s fan boys. I have, however, seen Mosley’s take on that lie (on YouTube), in which Mosley stated, earlier in the year he’d said he wanted to spend time with his family and there was no toothache. Anybody who knows anything about the dynamic between Jin and Shane, would realise Jin was the one wearing the trousers. Once Mosley’s second fight against Vargas was done and dusted, that was it for the year (he belonged to her).
So I’ll ask you again, what makes you think Mosley’s afraid of Mayweather and why can’t you back up your supposition with facts?

  • LuvBoxing says:

The only thing controversial about the Mayweather decision over DLH was the fact that one of the judges was an idiot and gave the fight to DLH. There is not one expert or objective fan of boxing that thought DLH won that fight.

Mayweather put on a clinic the the last 8 rounds of that fight and DLH saved a little face by throwing a lot of punches that never made contact.

I do think that Sugar Shane will match up a lot better with Floyd than DLH did, but Floyd just destroys fighters that press him and it will take a perfect fight for Shane to beat him. That being said, it CAN be done and Sugar is still good enough to do it, but it probably won’t happen.

Floyd Mayweather is one of the best fighters we will ever watch and it is hilarious to hear the stupidity of his detractors.

  • Solini says:

    @Pound4Pound…
The reason I mentioned the Zab fight is, Mayweather once moving into welterweight was very cautious of the people he was fighting in the early rounds and didn’t open up until he figured out their reaction time and speed. Zab back then was faster than Mosley. Also Mayweather gave Judah respect because of his puncher powering and the only ones who ever caught Mayweather with a punch that stunned him were lefties. Judah and Corley

  • tamod says:

Mayweather will win if this is a marathon !

  • daki's out says:

I honestly think Mosley has a great chance of beating Mayweather, Floyd isn’t as unbeatable as people including himself make him out to be, just look at the De la Hoya fight, that one could have gone either way and i think Mosley wants this a bit more than De la Hoya did. The outcome of this fight is by no means a foregone conclusion!

  • Pound4Pound says:

Zab Judah is not a great comparison to Mosley. Zab is a 5 round fighter his entire career. Mosley beat Oscar in his prime twice, once at 147 and once at 154. Floyd won a controversial boring split decision over the way past his prime Oscar. Every fight is different of course but don’t compare Zab to Mosley…I do think its an interesting fight coming up. And if Oscar says its going to be a knockout in this upcoming fight, then all I say is, GOT DAMN!!! well see soon enough…take note there is a rematch clause.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Mosley being ignored?!? Watch his interview after Vargas II!!!! Mosley was stuttering and trying everything he could to get out of fighting Mayweather! Sure Manny had Roach tell Mosley he’s too good, but not Mayweather. Mosley can act like he’s been trying to fight Mayweather for years, but he’s on record ducking him for over 10 years!! After being scared to death of Mayweather for 10 years Mosley realized that was his only chance for a big payday with Pacquiao ducking him. Mosley has only himself to blame for not fighting Mayweather earlier. “Ummmm. I got a loose tooth”!!! Yea, that sounds like he was trying to fight floyd and was ignored!

  • Solini says:

For those wishing, hoping and praying Mosley wins, you should take a look back at Mayweather vs. Judah. Mosley will look good the first 4 rounds and might be leading 3-1 or it’ll be 2-2. But once Floyd figures him out which he does against every opponent it’s over. Mosley isn’t a technical fighter, and at this stage there’s not much Nasim Richardson can show Mosley. He is who he is. To beat Mayweather you have to have a jab, Mosley pitter pats with his and never holds his guards up and most importantly swings for the fences with his punches. This equates to success when facing someone who’ll stand right in front of you but against a defensive mastermind who’s quicker and more agile he’ll get caught out of position and made to look silly.

FLOYD IS NOT USED TO HAVING THE GUY HIS FIGHTING BEING A GUY WHO FIGHTS BIG.WHAT DO I MEAN IS SIMPLE THE BIGGEST OPPONENT HE FOUGHT WAS OSCAR BUT HE FIGHTS SMALL DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO FIGHT MOVING FOWARD RICKY WAS A DUDE WHO FOUGHT BIG BUT DID NOT HAVE THE TOOLS.BUT MOSLEY FIGHTS BIG AND HE IS A BIG WELTERWEIGHT FLOYDS DEFENCE DEPPENS A LOT ON THE OTHER GUY NOT BEING BIG ENOUGH OR HAVING A PUNCH.MOSLEY DOES NOT NEED TO COUNTER TO KNOCK YOU OUT HE COULD GET YOU ON THE ROPES AND WORK THE BODY SOMETHING HE LEARN IN HIS FIGHT WITH COTTO,HE ALSO LEARN TO PUNCH GOING FOWARD HE PUTS A LOT OF ENERGY INTO THESE PUNCHES.FLOYD STYLE OF FIGHTING LOOKS TO ME THAT HIS FATHER AND UNCLE USED TO HAVE A LOT OF MISMATCH WITH HIM AS A BOY HE BEING THE BIGGER KID SO HE DEVELOPE THIS STYLE WITCH PEOPLE PRAISE AS THE BEST DEFENCE JUST LIKE THEY DID WITH ROY JONES BUT IN JONES CASE YOU NEED TO GIVE HIM CREDIT HE DID THIS AGAINST BIGGER GUYS.HIS ONE PUNCH STYLE AND MOSLEY GRANITE SHIN WILL MAKE FLOYD NOT JUST PLAY DEFENCE BUT ACTUALLY HAVE TO RUN AND I MEAN RUN.FLOYD WILL QUIT TRUST ME BEFORE THE THE 8RD!!!!!!!!!! Getting excited with this fight! Used a small app in my iTouch, and it says 58days to go! Yehey!!!

I think its anybody’s fight. Can go both ways. Let the better fighter win then!!!

  • tamod says:

No surprise here ! Guaranteed Mosley will beat the crap out of Foul mouthed Mayweather !

  • j says:

Floyd will win by unanimous decision but it will be a hard fight for him.

  • lacem up says:

please .. every body stop this nonsense about who duckin who !! boxing is a buisness FIRST….when you are a fighter every fight may be your last potentially..if there are several options for different fighters revenue is most always gonna come into play..after floyd schooled jmm reporters said why dont you fight mosley, and i remember floyd saying something like shane dont bring in ppv …thats not ducking you morons …there is no way ANY fighter can fight every qualified person out there…floyd wanted to fight manny p. cause hes the talk of the town right now instead of mosley…manny wanted to fight a tomato can this time so floyd fought mosley…its not ducking, just buisness !! you pactards out there would bad mouth floyd if he took on clottey or the equevelent..then when floyd does fight mosley yall say he was “forced” too or he had to…that is what a pactard is, someone wo much general boxing knowelege, and they worship the ground manny walks on !! manny could fight the FEATHERweight champ next and yall would convince yourselves that its a great fight just because theres a knock out or whatever…thats what a pactard is…not just because you like pacaiuo…if that was the case i would be a pactard !!

  • Big AL says:

This whole thing of who avoided who is pointless, it always comes down to money. When Floyd was calling out Moseley his name wasn’t enough for a big payday so Shane looked elsewhere. Then later Moseley was down and Floyd saw no reason to risk his title. At this point it makes sense for everyone involved. I think Shane has a great chance to win this one because he has Oscar’s fight to draw upon and he punches hard to the body. It’ll be close!

  • LuvBoxing says:

Floyd NEVER ducked Mosley, period. Mosley ducked Floyd for 10 years while he moved up in weight class. When Mosley was finally ready to think about a Mayweather fight, Mayweather got the opportunity to fight ODL and cash in.

Where do people come up with the idea that Floyd ducked Mosley? You can find Floyd calling out Mosley back in 1999.

  • BoxingCanada says:

Shane Mosley is one of the best true welterweight out there today, but I still think he doesn’t have the capability to defeat Mayweather in their upcoming fight. Perhaps 3-5 years ago he will have a chance, thats probably why Mayweather kept avoiding him before. Now Floyd knows it is the right time to fight Mosley. Mosley is too old of a boxer (39 yrs) to face the faster Mayweather. Mosley will lose this match, but I still hope he will give Floyd a great fight, and I hope Floyd will have hard time to get the win. Lets see this May 1st. Hopefully on March 13th Pacquio will defeat the bigger Clottey so we’ll be able to see a match between Pacman and Floyd sometimes in the fall.

  • LuvBoxing says:

Mosley would not make more money in a fight with Pac Man. He will make more money in this fight than he would in any fight he could fight. This fight is going to do HUGE numbers and he is probably going to clear $20 mil or more. Pac Man could never bring those type of PPV numbers.

I love Pac but he doesn’t get the PPV buys like Mayweather does.

  • wowzabean says:

    lil giant,

I want to know who the f*ck thought JMM stood a chance against Mayweather? I’ll tell that guy I have a bridge to sell.

  • Simon says:

Shane, Shane, Shane put the loudmouth Floyd to SHAME. I hope you do walk your talk.

  • fighttime69 says:

Lil Giant sorry but you make no sense. Do you mean putting pressure on Mayweather doesn’t work???? Mayweather might just win this fight but don’t count Mosley out! This fight is going to come down to a better fightplan because they both have skills. Mayweather might be a better boxer but Shane has more killer instinct and he is still pretty quick. Doc Holiday you’re right about Clottey. I thought he was winning against Margarito and he should at least got a draw against Cotto. If he would have punched a little more he would have won.

  • Pound4Pound says:

I have to disagree with Anonymous on Floyd being the only one who can change styles. There is a reason why one man is above all else on the P4P list and PED doesn’t teach boxing skills or make you faster. Its the fighter of the decade…

  • Pound4Pound says:

This is the first legit welterweight fight for Floyd. Floyd’s fight with Oscar was at light middleweight. Hatton had no boxing skills whatsoever, Gatti was overrated, and Marquez was cheated and was way too slow with all the extra weight. Truth be told that this is Floyd’s first true legit welterweight with skills. Who will win? I don’t know…

  • Anonymous says:

no one can change game plans and adjust to a fighters style the way mayweather does during fights. hes gon figure out shane and beat him. floyd not like maergarito hes not jus gon come at u n stand there and not move his head. a very good and interesting fight i cant wait to watch it. alot of ppl hate mayweather and want him to loose . and this fights has alot of risk for money. so alot of ppl gon buy the ppv to watch him loose. no matter wat u can say bout money he does bring alot of buzz around to boxing when hes around

  • boxingfan#1 says:

Doc holiday your the jackass. Nowhere in the artical does the writer state Clotty was badly beaten up. He said Cotto was badly beaten up by Margarito. Touch on Mayweather all you want but on May 1st SugarShane is going to whip his ass.

  • Sai says:

Just hoping that this fight is not staged. Either way, the winner of PacMan-Clottey and Money-Mosley, fighting each other is possible.

  • vinny says:

I hope Mosley can back up his talk. Taking on PBF is no easy task, but I’m rooting for Mosley. I’d like to see PBF taste some of his own medicine with the trash talk.

  • Free one says:

Wowwwwww! I would like 2 c that happend… That’s going 2 b tha most embarrasing in tha history of boxinggg.. … N most people say’s that PAC make a wrong Dcsion 2 pick clottey..
