Mayweather: “I’m the greatest fighter that ever lived”

By Eric Thomas: In a recent interview by ESPN Sports center, undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. had this to say about himself: “I take my hat off to Sugar Ray Robinson, and Muhammad Ali, and Sugar Ray Leonard, all the legendary champions. But I gave the sport of boxing my whole life to be the best, and I feel I earned the right to say that I’m the best fighter that ever lived. And I proved myself and I think that they say that women and men lie, but my numbers don’t lie.”

Mayweather appears to be talking about his unbeaten 40-0 ring record. It’s an impressive record there’s no doubt. However, some boxing fans feel that Mayweather hasn’t always taken on the best fighters during his 14-year pro career.

Mayweather says this about his May 1st opponent Shane Mosley: “I think Mosley is out of character, cause that’s not him talking trash to an opponent. That’s me. That’s been me for the longest for the past 15 years, since I’ve been in the sport of boxing, and dominated the sport of boxing. There’s a blue print in how to beat Shane. If you have five losses, there’s a remedy and code in how to beat you. There’s no code or remedy on how to beat Floyd Mayweather. I’m here to clean up the sport of boxing. We’re not cheating over here. We want to separate the ordinary from the good, and great. And I’m a great one, because I never used no drug enhancement drugs, and all those fighters in this time and different athletes are cheating. If you have to cheat to win, I don’t that’s cool at all. How you going to call yourself an all time great if you cheat?”

Mayweather will be taking a very dangerous fight against WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas on May 1st. Mayweather needs to win this fight for him to have a chance at a huge money fight against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao later on in 2010. Mayweather attempted to negotiate a fight with Pacquiao recently, but was unable to reach terms for a fight due to random blood testing that Mayweather wanted for the fight.

Not true beautiful mike, when he trained for Marquez he has to make excuses for an injured rib during the training so as to postpone the fight because he is not going to make it on time. The only thing that is always in shape is his t-o-n-g-u-e, always sharp as ever. Flowd talks like a vodka man always exagerate just to promote his fight fighting little men and pounding trash. Just like the Sr. (of course) are both like used-equipment salesmen always lying what the equipment can do. He let Hatton believed that Pacman is just a one dimentional boxer and did not bother to train him well instead and comes the fight time and he stammers and later makes excuses by making stories about PEDs.

  • PrettyMike says:

If you really follow boxing…You would know Floyd’s work ethic is crazy. He works on his craft daily. He knows boxing is his craft so he is constantly prefecting it. A lot of fighters have down time. When a fight is scheduled for them they have to get back in shape. When a fight is scheduled for Floyd he is already, ready he walks around at fight weight. The man takes this stuff serious. Don’t be bias just give credit were it is do.

  • WWANKAH says:

Floyd has never looked so lunatic this bad, I wonder if he knows that self proclaming is self degrading.

It would be so much fun to see someone Slap this jack A*s so he can wake up to see reality.

  • WWANKAH says:

Floyd is not dreaming, this is what happend when you shoot too much STEROID, you become a braggart, self proclaming. Floyd is just making himself the GREATEST DISGUST IN BOXING OF ALL TIME further and further.

Somebody, please…. Check Floyd into a mental facility.

  • anon says:

    Sugar Ray Robinson
    GOAT

  • goodgrief says:

    @juan aussie

they say floyd jr is a chicken. Now i really believe that floyd jr is a cuckoo. By saying his all time best that ever lived. definitely crazy

  • mj says:

hey clown are you dreaming or having a nightmare, your’re nothing boy, for me you’re just a clown. fight the best fighters in the ring before you claimed that you are the best fighter, ok? wake up boy, talk to your father maybe he beleives in you. anyway like father like son,

  • ol skool says:

Sugar Ray Robinson fought 202 professional bouts, he won 175 of them, 110 by knockout.,He was invincible at Welterweight & never beaten. Most of his defeats came after the age of 40, Robinson also fought Jake Lamotta 6 times. Winning 5 of their encounters, they even fought twice just 3 weeks apart! Who does that now? Who? Undisputed Welterweight Champion of all time, Undisputed Middleweight champion of all time, SUGAR RAY ROBINSON! by the way Robinsons first defeat at the hands of Jake Lamotta came after 40 straight wins, hmm.He then went unbeaten in 91 contests over the next 8 years. And he won the Undisputed Middleweight championship 5 times. Floyd i’m a big fan of yours, but you do not even come close to being The Greatest of all Time. Sorry You are Dreaming, even if you beat Mosley & Pacquio in the space of two months.

  • THE HAMMER13 says:

I would agree if and when he win on May 1st!!!Right now,not just yet,but with Shane on the resume definitely!!I give him credit for all 40 of his wins, the fact no one has beat him(only one controversial bout)and we all know other fighters have plenty more than that(especially fighters that people say are better than Floyd),and lastly i love his punch stat ratios!!I watch a lot of boxing and love all the greats but i aint seen one yet(and i havent seen them all)that has or had his numbers he put up!!Floyds fights average at least 42percent to like 20percent!!!He make people(and these are Pros we talking about, not Joes)look like real amateurs!!I like it better than people running in and getting a knockout or getting knocked out!!I mean how you train for months and lose in minutes?I understand the one in a lifetime best punch ever type of a punch, but come on!!!He the best yes but of all time we will see!!Im still gonna have respect for him if he lose, its just how he rebounds will be the key!!!Everybody doesnt rebound well!!

  • Graham says:

Mayweather can only be the greatest if he undergo the MUTT screening and random sh*it test before his fights, i.e. if boxing commissions allow imposition of other tests to boxers, the way he wants it to be.

I’d say leave the stringent drug testing to Nevada Boxing Commission Floyd. They are so far very good at it. Just box and fight the best !!!

  • THECHEATERS says:

i agree MAYWEATHER IS THE BEST FIGHTER EVER!

  • propps says:

Like he said men lie women lie but numbers dont,an calzac didnt do good numbers, but he was a hell of a fighter but mayweather is among the greatest up there wit ali an suger ray, though most tend to differ, its like he has to beat a heavyweight to get the credit he deserves, sad.

  • jasz says:

Mayweather likened himself to Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Now he is proclaiming to be the greatest boxer that ever lived, greater than Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Leonard, and the other all time greats because of his 40-0 record (with 25 wins by way of KO). If that is his basis then Calzaghe is greater than him because Joe has an undefeated record of 46-0 with 32 wins by way of KO. But, Floyd will counter saying Calzaghe has fought not so many great and quality fighters. Well, I can ask the same thing from him. Has Floyd fought many great and quality fighters? Fighters bigger and stronger than him? Has he even allowed himself to be the underdog recently in any of his fights? I don’t think so. Having a 40-0 record does not make you a GOAT. Rocky Marciano indeed has a better record than Mayweather. The Rock from Brockton has a record of 49-0 with 44 wins by way of KO. That’s two fighters with better perfect records than Mayweather.

Please Floyd stop being such a dumb@ss and always making a fool of yourself. You maybe one of the great fighters of your generation. But as the “Greatest”? NO WAY man.

  • preston says:

donkey- “Mosley is a known user so he has to agree no matter what”…..oh really? so what about the urine test that is already in place to test drugs? The test that YOU Manny Fan’s deemed to be sufficient when Floyd asked Manny to take the test. Now, all of a sudden its not good enough, when it comes to Mosely????? What happened to all the talk about the commission rules? Aremt they applicable to Mosely just as they were apllicable to Manny??? Are those rules not good enough now???? And what about Floyd using the test to change the rules, and duck fighters????? All those issues just didnt go away because Floyd is not fighting Pac now…right???? Mosely did what pac was unwilling to do, and there is ZERO talk about the test anymore……….it is only an issue when it comes to Pac.

  • toxic says:

    @LIAM KNOWS.

your comment ” true he is the greatest” is the dumbest thing i have ever seen since seeing david lahr’s articles here.

you need to honestly and i mean honestly start re searching the history of boxing from sgura ray robinson, archie moore, henry armstrong, ali, duran, hearns, heck id even inlcude hector macho camacho in one of the greatest fighters to have ever lived even better than floyd mayweather’s record. why?? well if you folks did not know hector macho camacho is the other fighter with a 7 championship belts in 7 diffrent weight divisions albeit 4 of those 3 belts came from minor boxing commissions but still was within boxing logic as 7 different weight classes.

  • preston says:

donkey- What is there not to get???? Does not the same commission rules that apply to Pac apply to Mosely????Mosely did not have to take the test……….lolol…….if that was the case then why hasnt he taken them before????? You guys just need to let it go. If it was all about the commission rules with Pac…..why is it not all about the commission rules with Mosely, when he had every right to take that route also………….but he CHOSE to take the test, and there is ZERO talk about MAyweather “changing the rules”….lolol.

  • preston says:

    WTF- Its all good man.

  • JosephBTS says:

That’s your selfish opinion man. How could you compare yourself with Leonard, Duran, Hearns and Hagler during their era? Now, we got Mosley, Cotto and the record breaking 7 world championship in 7 different division, Manny Pacquiao? You might be good and I don’t think that you’re the best ever. Sorry mate.

  • WTF says:

Preston sorry for the late response – Let me make this very clear, I do not in anyway justify why Manny or his promoter didn’t agree to a blood test up to the day of the fight! I’m saying that the lame excuse of the Mayweather fans saying Manny had no reason to refuse (if he was clean) is BS .. Floyd and GBP wanted the USADA to do it and if you follow any sport that has the USADA doing the test you will hear complaints on how they treat certain athletes differently.. With that being said, lets go to JMM ? He said he was going to ask for the same testing if Manny would agree to fight him – and he is who ? Mayweather has what belt ? If these fighters want to call the shots let them do what Manny did – fight fighters that could beat them ! It’s funny that Manny is smaller then any of the fighers he fought the last three times and people are making excuses that he is on some kinda PED because he is winning. if he agrees to a test the day of the fight that will be his decision – why? because he earned it. Floyd ? well lets say he thinks he should be able to ask for it !!! Oh yeah I forgot about Pac – and yes I still think Floyd ducked him !!!

  • john says:

Mayweather ducked Pacqiao for an easy opponent but the cry from fans and the cancellation of Mosley/Berto left him with no choice but to fight Shane. I remembered Mosley confronted him after the Marquez’s fight which greatly upsetted him. Sure, he did challenge Shane, but back then he was not a recognised name.

I have a feeling that Floyd was outfoxed by Golden Boy who stands to make a lot of money whehter he fights Pacqiao or Mosley. Of course, more with Shane. Like they say, you were desperately looking fire wood only to find a can of gas.

As for this fight, he may win it but not the way he wanted to win or how he has won in the past.

  • Victor Ozarraga Teves says:

    Marc 8, 2010

Floyd the greatest boxer? Bwahahahahahahah! After he defeated a smaller Marquez now Floyd claimed he is the greatest boxer? Floyd is basically fighting pygmies.

  • LL TAU GAMMA PHI says:

Mayweather “the Pitypat” xylocaine user wants to clean the sport!? C’mon dude! The main reason you ducked pacquiao is because you can’t fight in dallas.

  • Nice guy says:

He’s only fought 40 times!! how can you say your the Greatest of all time??? this guy is the biggest IDIOT!!

  • arroyo grande bob says:

truly amazing there would be so much response from this article.

  • rasec says:

Being the greatest isn’t something you brag about, for most times your record doesn’t show all the sort of person you are, on the other hand it only goes against you.

Mention praises and gratitude to fans and to God will make you a better person, be humble and not at all envous will
make you at ease and contented.

Mayweather is resentful because he forces his own legacy,
Let the people say “you are the greatest” for even if you lose
you still win the heart of the people. And that’s what greatness is.

  • MoneyPack says:

WHAT DO YOU CALL A FIGHTER WHO REFUSES A 36 MINUTE WORK FOR $50 MILLION BUT ACCUSES HIS OPPONENT INSTEAD OF A DRUG CHEAT?

  • clott says:

PBF wants to clean up boxing. What a joke PBF, ODLH,Mosley are users of know substance by the commission. PAC clean boxing record will only prevail and make you more of an idi*t.

  • preston says:

wait a minute…………..Mosely did NOT have to agree to take the test. The same commission rules that Pac pointed to are the same rules that are applicable to Mosely, and just because he admitted to steroids doesnt mean that he should be treated ANY less than Pac when it comes to the current rules in place. Get my facts straight????NO ONE before Floyd, ever asked Mosely to take these type of test……fact. JMM was prepared to ask Manny for the same test……….regardless of your take on it. Mosely had EVERY right to take the same course of action as Pac, and we would have had the exact same situation as Manny……..but Shane agreed, and we dont hear ANYTHING more about the test. Pac had a new reason for not taking the test every week, and the situation became a circus. There is ZERO difference in Floyd’s negotiation with Pac as with Shane, but Mosely agreed and we dont hear a peep out of ANYONE about the test, about the commission rules, or about Floyd using the test because he is scared, or looking for a way out of the fight……………..NOTHING.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ Preston…

Get your facts right. JMM marquez didn’t care if Pac tested. That was GBP. There is no way JMM would have blown another chance with Pac over blood testing.

And no, Mayweather turned the whole thing into a circus. Pacquiao is not obligated to agree to anything that mayweather asks for. The moment Pac turned down the testing, Mayweather should have just backed out and fought the guy that he said he could beat anyway. Instead he went on record on said that pac must be hiding something and insinuated that without his type of testing, then the fight would be unfair. Was any of that really needed? Hell no it wasn’t. But he had to say that pac was dirty, otherwise he’d have no reason to justify his demand for extra testing.

And that’s forgetting the fact that he already said thatPac is one dimensional and easy work. Now suddenly Pac is an extra-ordinary fighter? C’mon bro.

The Mosley situation is not the same because Mosely is a known cheater. I would understand if Floyd was very strict against Mosley considering he’s more of a threat, AND he been known to dope. But why insist so much for Pacquiao?

There is no proof, so he was being stubborn over the FEAR of Pac using, not the knowledge. Whereas Pac has intimate knowledge of the effect testing has on him. Not only that, there isn’t a single shred of evidence out there that supports FLoyd’s fear of fighting a dirty fighter. Not a single one has gotten a Barry Bonds like performance boost from doping. It’s all smoke and mirrors. I’m not falling for that crap.

Just ask yoursef if Floyd will be so proactive to clean up the sport once he’s not in it. You know he won’t. He just doesn’t like the fact that people compare Pac to him and he’s looking for a way to separate himself from Pac. Boxing will not care about the testing once the Mayweathers are out of boxing.

  • preston says:

and where is the comment of Floyd Jr. directly accussing Pac of steroids? I agree to say that he may have insinuated that Pac needs to be checked for them, but I do not think that Jr, at least has directly come out and said that ” Manny Pacquiao is on steroids”……I do, howvever, recall reading comments from P. Malignaggi, and Kermit Cintron accussing Pac of PEDS long before I heard of Floyd asking him to test.

  • preston says:

I disagree to say that Floyd made it out of a big deal by accussing Pac, because Pac could have called Floyds’ “bluff” by taking the test, and nipping this issue in the bud……….again, because regardless of what mayweather insinuated, if Pac had taken the test, and passed….this would have been a none issue……….just like it is with Mosely. It became an issue when Pac gave his reasons……..several varying reasons, and angles to not take the restricted test at every turn…….and Pac turned this issue into a circus way more than Floyd. Why is no one talking about the test with Mosely??? Who has ever asked Mosely before Floyd to take this type of test knowing that he admitted to PEDS usage before???? NOBODY is saying ANYTHING about Mosely taking the test, and it is NOT a big deal because he agreed. NOBODY is saying ANYTHING about Floyd doing this with Shane even though Floyd negotiatied with Shane the EXACT same test as he requested of Pac…………again, even though Shane was an admitted user NO ONE before his fight with Floyd asked him to take a test of this nature……knowing what we do now know about him. Mosely could have taken the same route as pac, about the current commission rules, and agreeing to only take the urine testing that is currently in place…….and this too, would have turned into a circus. Again……JMM was fully prepared to ask Pac to take the exact same test as Floyd requested…….and for whatever reasons, Pac turned into another direction…so again Floyd was not the only person that wanted Pac to take the test. Agian, Mosely could have taken the same course as Pac…..and we would have had the EXACT same situation…….but he agreed, and the fight is on………and NOBODY is saying anything about Mayweather changing the rules.

  • oscar says:

na i rate him alongside/top whitaker, trinidad, de la hoya then you got jones / hagler / leonard then top of the top ali/ robinson / louis people like that another 5 wins over the best yeah he is one of the best he needs another 10 wins against top people to be greatest thats a huge statement

I AGREE WITH YOU PBF 200 PERCENT,THESE CATS ARE HATERS

  • lex_fugitive says:

    wowza;
Pacquiao’s last 6 fights and 7 of his last 8 have been in Nevada. Mayweather’s last five fights have been in Nevada. Mayweather also tried to get Pacquiao to fight him in California, but Arum refused to even consider it.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    wowza;
thats cause thats where all the biggest fights are held. What’s the difference fighting anywhere else?? The rules are basically the same except there is NO DRUG TESTS in other states. And actually, Mayweather wanted to fight Manny in LA at the Staples Center, but Arum refused to even consider that because AEG owns the Staple Center and has a small share of stock in GBP. Mayweather wanted to fight in California on March 13. Its true, you should really get your facts right, and know what you are talking about because you seem to constantly spew out lies. I realize if you stick to the truth than you can’t downgrade Mayweather and his achievements, but its really getting pathetic. 6 out of his last 13 fights, isn’t the beginning of his career. Not even close. But good try, even though it was a blatant lie.

  • wowzabean says:

    lex,

I’m saying as of late he won’t fight anywhere else other than Nevada. Of course he fought elsewhere you f*ckn retard, every fighter, especially starting out, has fought elsewhere. Lately he won’t move from Nevada, no matter what the fight. So STFU.

MAY BORING FIGHTs. PAQ excitement and trill..
That is why PAQ gets all the accolade of BOXING… PAQ gets all the accolade from fans and writers while MAY gets it from himself

i urge every boxing fans all over the world by not watching floyd fight on PPV, this guy is disrespectful arrogant P##ck. he forgot we are the reason why he is making a lot of money because of us the boxing fan who support boxing. and yet he is wagging his money infront of us to insult everybody. as much as we like boxing lets not support this kind of behavior.

  • Mosweather says:

Fighters with low confidence have ways to boost their low morale by psyching up and declaring invincibility.
They will try to fool their brain so that they will have the guts to face the adversary.
Floyd tried to do this during the negotiations with Pacquiao by saying that Manny is Small, one-dimensional, no-skill easy fight….just to see if Pacquiao will flinch but it was Floyd
that lost heart and decided to back-out.

This technique is used by trainers on Fighters with Very Low IQ or Dumb Fighters.

If you watched the Movie “Nacho Libre”, the Champion uses this same technique before
the fight with Nacho, his assistant will chant repeatedly “Ramses is No.1, his muscles is
    No.1, he is No.1″

  • preston says:

Phoocquiao- that was a good comment…..there are probaly diferent routes that Floyd could have taken in his crusade to bring mandatory blood testing to the table, but being that boxing already does urine testing for drugs, which at this time, they feel to be sufficient…..it looks like Floyd just took it upon himself to raise the bar to another level. Floyd has definately brought attention to this issue, which I applaud considering how steroids is becomming a major issue in ALL branches of sports, and atheletes are finding more and more ways to circumvent the current process. I just do not understand for the life of me, how could anyone think that having a more rigid and stringent steroid test is unresonable. If Manny Pacquiao had agreed to this procedure without reservation, I wonder how much of an issue would this really be?

    wowza;
Manny also demanded something that never happened before. Manny had a pattern of coming in overweight for tough fights and no one ever demanded a $10 million per pound penalty. Mayweather came in heavier than the original agreed upon weight once, while Manny actually had a pattern of doing that. but no one ever made such a crazy demand, because they weren’t afraid to fight him. Look at his record and u will see Manny constantly came in overweigt against the best fighters early in his career yet no one ever demanded a $10 million per pound penalty. That was nothing but a way to try and back out of the fight.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    Wowza;

I realize it sounds good to downplay Floyd’s achievements by lying and saying he will only fight in Nevada, but his record clearly says otherwise. Look at the actual facts, and ur lies are exposed. But hey, if u tell only the truth Mayweather looks like the best boxer out there today. Good lie, but thats all it is: A LIE.

  • asif says:

if floyd beats pacman he will be regarded as the best welterweight that ever lived. Its funny to notice that the real sugar ray had fast combinations like pacman and intellegance like floyd.

  • kray says:

I like Nasim Richardson’s stance on this. And it is also my stance, as well. If Floyd (or any fighter) feels like he’s the greatest of all time, then so be it. It’s up to him to prove it. Most of the success of fighters is based on the confidence they have in themselves. Ali believed it to, and said often, long before he was considered such.

I’m sure Floyd knows, if he retired today, he would not be considered the greatest of all time, by boxing pundits. But, he does have the tools to be the GOAT. Critics say if he beats SSM, Pac, and PW, he would then be in the conversation as the GOAT. I disagree.

SSM is considered one the greatest fighters of this era.
While beating SSM, will improve his legacy, it won’t make him the GOAT. If Floyd beats SSM, people will say, Shane was over the hill, or SSM lost the mental edge to Floyd during the promotions, or the fight was fixed, or the judges were partial to his style, or the politics of sport worked in his favor, with a super-fight with Pac looming, etc.

Pac is, also, considered one the greatest fighters of this era. So, beating Pac, will improve his legacy. But, this win won’t make him the GOAT either. Because, if Floyd beats Pac, people will say, Pac was smaller than him, or GBP bought off the judges, or the judges were partial to his style, or Manny was “weakened” from the blood test, or he “bullied” Pac, in the negotiations, and got the mental edge, etc.

Paul Williams is a good fighter, not great. So, a win over him, will not make him the GOAT either. I think people only bring Paul Williams into the conversation, because, the guy is such a big, dominating force. But, if he fought PW and beat him, people would say, PW was exposed by Martinez, or PW wasn’t all that great anyway, etc.

Because the haters and boxing pundits always set the bar higher for him, with each new accomplishment, while they set the bar lower for other fighters, Floyd will never do enough to be considered the GOAT. So, he may as well believe in himself, instead of expecting fickle fans and boxing pundits to do so.

  • EIN says:

Maybe it’s better for him to say ” I’m the best ducker or cherry picker that ever lived”.

  • Graham says:

The very objective reasons why many people love Pacquiao fights are these striking differences as observed by many:

1). Floyd’s fights are boring fights coz he wins by defending himself fully, frustrates his opponent and throw few lucky jabs. Kinda static boxing bout.

2). While Pacquiao fights are electrifying bouts that will get you up your feet on the excitements of seeing flurry of punches, aggressive attacks and lightning speed counterpunches.

And yes, I also like Shawn Porter better than Floyd. He fights like a bull too, a real boxer. Not boring

  • Unknown says:

    Mayweather is a MEGALOMANIAC.

  • wowzabean says:

    Phoocquiao,

Exactly. I’ve said it time and time again. If his real call in life is to clean up the sport, then take it up w/the NSAC (he’ll only fight in Nevada after all) and dump money into efficient testing and push random blood tests outside of one fight. Speak to the commissions, doctors, scientists, make an effort to really push reason for testing. Yet, he doesn’t. I don’t know if he’s just retarded or he’s trying to throw a fighter under the bus. The proof is in the pudding.

  • RED FF35 says:

After Pacman defeated Oscar, this dehydrated thing came out, where was this before the fight? Didn’t people see that Oscar has no chance against Manny & stop the fight because he’s dehydrated?

What about Hatton and Cotto? Didn’t the “experts” say Hatton & Cotto are too strong for Pacman? Why didn’t they stop the fight if they knew they Hatton is overrated and Cotto is shot?

  • dahomeboy says:

so what does that make JOSE LOISE CASTILLO who beat him the first time but got robbed.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ Preston…

I’m not sure about Floyd’s true intentions when it comes to cleaning up the sport. I think he’s only really concerned about cleaning up his own fights, if he’s really even concerned about that at all. Not a single fighter thus far has taken the same rout as Mayweather and requested extra testing. It’ll be interesting to see if they have it for Berto or any other Haymon/Ellerbee managed fighter.

I look at it like this. Can you imagine if Manny decided to launch a one man effort to clean up his city in the Philippines? It’ll never work. He’s doing what will be the most effective (granted the Gov is pretty messed up there) and is taking it to congress.

That’s what FLoyd should be doing. Taking it to the heads of the sport. Of course he’s gonna say whatever he can to justify himself, but anyone that’s really looking knows that he’s taking the wrong path on purpose.

and your right, the testing was just a request. A request that cost him $40 mil as well. $40 mil to make sure one fight is clean?

I’d give him credit if he donated any money towards cleaning up the sport once he retires. It’ll never happen, and we all know it.

mario lol thanks. Look Floyd is one of the greatest, there’s no arguing that. The guy has 40 fights and 0 losses. Not many men have done that. That being said the guy has 15 less fights than Pacquiao and 11 less fights than Shane. I mean it’s easIER to keep a 0 when you don’t fight that many opponents. Calzaghe only had 46 fights I believe and he was undefeated, still do you think Floyd will fight 5 more times after Mosley? I doubt it. One of the greatest defensive fighters, not the best though.

If he manages to take down SSM, which he should, and then beats Pacquiao, he’d definitely be in the running though. Running…..no pun intended ;)

Kentucky Floyd Chicken aka “Xylocaine” you can never be the great or greatest boxer, it will never happen in the kind of attitude you have, boxing fans are more smart now than before. You are partner with GBP/Dela Hoya, yes? because you and Dela Hoya are both cheaters, Dela Hoya aka “Lidocaine User” and you Kentucky Floyd Chicken aka “Xylocaine User”. You used both illegal drugs to take advantage with your opponents. Roach called you a fight with Pacquiao “WINNER TAKE ALL” it is a call mayweather. any time, any place any where.. Pacquiao will fight you in any states in america and any country.. but you just want to fight only in vegas co’z you are a coward and you cannot used “Xylocaine” to numb your hands co’z it is illegal to most of states including Texas… You are a real cheater and coward Floyd, don’t ever called yourself americans, you are ashamed in this country..

I think chik floyd will win in a unanimous but hope mosley knocks him out. anyhow, floyd is top 30 of all time at best. if floyd beats pac, berto, williams, and maybe up and coming bradley and retire and he can be in the top ten for sure.

btw..compare pac’s achievements compared to floyds..and also the de la oya and hatton fights. pac destroyed hatton. floyd and oscar looked like they were going clubbing after their fight. too bad we will never see pac vs mayweather.

I agree Pryor would have been a tough match for Mayweather or anyone. Robinson in his prime would have beat Floyd. Other than those two, not many would give him a run for his money. Pryor was amazing though. I rank him as one of the best since Sugar Ray Robinson.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    Jackson;
You have no idea what you are talking about. When Mayweather moved to 140 Tszyu had a fight scheduled with Hatton, that got pushed back several months because of an injury. Then he got stopped by Hatton. So Mayweather ducked the RETIRED Tszyu and shortly thereafter agreed to fight the UNDISPUTED WELERWEIGHT champ?!? I realize the haters say he should have called out a retired figthter that just got stopped in his last fight and not focused on the champs at the higher division, but that would be ducking the best, instead of fighting the best. Mayweather won what?? 4 or 5 belts in 3 fights at welterweight instead of calling out a retired fighter that just got KOd. But hey, Pacquaio fought Morales coming off a loss all three times, Barrera instead of Marquez who dominated Barrera in their previous fight, and the weakest title holder at 135. ODLH who was weight drained at 150 in his previous fight, Hatton who got saved by the ref against the light hitting Lazcano, and a shot Cotto instead of the #1 welterweight Mosley who was too good. ODLH outweighed Mayweather by 16 pounds!!! Hatton had the better odds than anyone else would have, Baldomir was the Ring and Linear champ, Judah had numerous belts and was the undisputed champ when Floyd agreed to fight him. Marquez, a future hall of famer, who most thought beat Pacquiao was a 4-1 underdog that didn’t come close to winning a round against Mayweather.Mayweather was favored against Pacquiao and Pacquiao is a 6-1 favorite against Clottey. Honestly, look at the records and tell me who is ducking the best.

  • rey says:

he has no right to claimed to be the greatest, until no one will stand infront of him to fight. only the respected boxing organizations/associations (such as ring mag / bwaa) can award such recognitions but it will carry proofs/records and you should beat the best too.

  • vince vegas says:

I don’t think you have to go all the way back to Robinson to find guys who would have tested Floyd.

Floyd was at his best @ 135, I think a prime Duran @ 135 would walk him down & hurt him.

Aaron Pryor was a mean MF & a great technical boxer, he would have reached Floyd.

Meldric Taylor, who lost to Chavez in their first fight, sort of, was very special (Watch that one on You Tube, it’s an incredible fight)

Chavez? I won’t even go there.

Robinson & Jake LaMotta fought twice within the space of one month.

It’s hard to compare fighters from different era’s, the game has changed so much. But back in the day it was 15 rounds & there was only one champion.

Would that champion have been Floyd? Not IMHO.

  • jackson says:

floyd carefully picks his opponants and has gotten 1 gift decision in his career, which would have been better for him if he’d lost, he’d taken some chances and may well have turned out to be the best, but he’s ducked too many fights for that…he picked mosley because mosley has always had trouble with movers…mosley hates to punch from angles and likes to set his feet, manny likes to throw on the move, punching with power from almost any angle,,,which is a nightmare for floyd, his 1 near-loss was against a fighter much like manny, though not nearly as good

Some of the greatest fighters of all time that are ahead of Floyd in my book are…. Sugar Ray Robinson…..Joe Louis……Willie Pep…Henry Armstrong……M.Ali……Marvin Hagler. And many more that would aslo come before him. Floyd is good, but there isnt ANY fighter today that compare against some of those guys that fought in the mid 20th century…..hec, Archie Moore had more KO’s than Floyd and Pac total fights. Those mid 20th century guys fought 15 and 20 rounds compared to these guys today that get gassed after the first 5….lolol. Put Mayweather or Pac in the ring with Sugar Ray Robinson for a 15 -20 round fight, and both of those guys would be on the canvas before the ringing of the last bell.

  • Jinx says:

Like father like son. Mayweathers are crazy.

  • ZKO says:

I know that Ali also proclaimed himself to be the greatest fighter as well. The difference is that Ali fought other greats like Foreman, Fraiser, Norton, Shavers, etc… some of them multiple times. Mayweather still needs a way to go, but he can mouth off as much as he likes as long as he makes the fights against the best.

  • Tompo says:

He’s living on cloud cuckoo land if he thinks he’s the greatest, especially comparing himself to Ali, Robinson and Leonard.

He has excellent defensive skills, but that’s about it, and the cold, hard truth for Mayweather fans is that his defensive skills have only been displayed against fighters who never had the power or speed to actually hurt Mayweather in the first place. Offensively, there’s not much to write home about.

As for the list of fighters he’s beaten, it’s pretty underwhelming. The 0 in the 40-0 just means that he’s not tested himself at all. He’s been in the ring against 40 boxers pre-selected because they wouldn’t test him.

Mosley should be the first to buck the trend, but it’s come pretty late at the age of 39 for Shane and over a year since his last fight. Let’s see how Mayweather fares, and furthermore, what he does after this fight if he wins it. He has no right to call himself the greatest if all he has on his record is a controversial win over old man De La Hoya and a win over old man Mosley. He needs Pacquiao, Cotto, Williams on his record too to even have a valid claim at all.

  • preston says:

WTF- again….forget about Pac. Floyd has moved on and said this would be the norm for the rest of his fights………whats the problem with that? You guys continually try to bring up Pac when Pac made this more of a circus himself. we all know the rules…..we all get that……the blood testing request up to this point from Floyd is just that…….a request, so I do not need to hear anything about the commission rules. As has been stated before JMM was also prepared to ask Pac for the same test, had Pac been willing to fight JMM for the third time. Pac for whatever reasons….and we heard more than enough, refused the test. It is getting rather lame to keep peddling this “mayweather was scared” BS, when he has continually says that he doesnt know ANYBODY who would refused to take a 25 million dollar drug test…….I don’t hear any “relief” in Floyd now or previously when the negotiations with Pac broke down….infact he sounded angry and treid to intimidate Pac into agreeing to the test by calling him a “punk” the day after Arum pulled the plug. Manny had his reasons…….maybe it was more Bob Arum than not……but Floyd put it on the table, not only for Manny but for all his subsequent matches, and given that steroids in sports are reaching epidemic type preportions, I think that that what Mayweather is doing, whether sincere or not, is necessary. You guys just want to make it out of an issue because it didnt go “Mannys way”.

Sugar Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Muhamed Ali, are all true legends of boxing, because they fought and beat the best. That cheeky b#stard Fraud, doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath, as those all-time greats!
Either one of these Sugar’s, would absolutely destroy that deluded moron mayweather.
Ray Robinson has over a hundred knock-outs to his name, and is widely reguarded as the greatest of all time.
Ray Leonard faced all the great fighters of his time, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, etc.
What can validate such an out-landish claim as Mayweather’s?…oh yeah, cherry pick for majority of his career, face no real welterweight, until waiting for your main rival gets to 38 years of age. Yes you truley are “the greatest of all time”, congratulations you are the weakest link! LOL

Floyd Mayweather jr. is the greatest ducker in the history of boxing. He ducked Cotto Margarito and now Pacquiao, hes fighting Mosley after ducking him for 8 yrs. He is not even recognized by boxing writers as a great boxer, cant be mentioned among the likes of Leonard, Hearns, Hagler or Duran. He is a notch below them.

  • Floyd The greatest Dancer says:

People have seen/reviewed Floyd’s fights-they are boring. I agree with a comment here that there is not even any hint of greatness in them. The last time he fought was even worse. One could hardly conclude that indeed Floyd is the greatest pound for pound. As much as we want to be optimistic about Floyd, the guy just don’t have it anymore. He’s slower, weaker and has lost the appetite for fighting with an increased appetite for talking. He’s better off pursuing Dancing with the stars. He seemed more alive there.

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

Floyd can say he’s the greatest all he wants. But he needs to convince the fans!

Ali said he was the greatest and proved it inside the ring. And the fans agreed… Ali was the greatest.

  • wowzabean says:

No you’re not the greatest. This guy is a complete megalomaniac, so delusional. Not even close to being top 5. I’d put him in the top 15 of GOAT, but Manny will always be ahead, unless Floyd beats him, even then it would still be too close to call.

Tweezy, believing you’re the best and being the best are two completely different ideals. You have to believe you have the capability to be the best, but complacency will always drag you down. You have to continually strive for perfection in life. The “best” or “perfection” doesn’t exist, that’s why everyday, no matter what you do, there’s always someone better. To say your there is not is hubris, but just plain naive. Keep trying to be the best, believe you can, but never settle.

Floyd nice words, but again just words. Just like when you compared yourself to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, you’re a sick man.

  • You Know I'm Right says:

Floyd is not the greatest that have ever lived……great fighter, but definately not the greatest ever. And concerning him cleaning up the sport, he actually makes a very good point…..this is unfortunately the age of steroids, and it is becoming more of an issue in ALL flavors of sport across the board. Who cares that he started with Pacquiao? The fact is, is that he says that this will be the norm for the remainder of his fights. If Pac was doing this then a legion of his fans would have stood behind him, but because he is on the opposite end of the stick by refusing the random test, now all of a sudden his fans have a problem with it too. I agree with Floyd 100% when he says he wants everybody to believe a boxing match can be staged where the participants are guarenteed to be clean, and the public will be assured by a more stringent test, then what is currently in place. People that are soo against that, please tell me what does Floyd have to gain by this????………..forget about Pacquiao, because I already know that saying that Floyd did this to avoid Pac is the most convenient and lamest thing to say.

Mayweather Fraud Jr is a JERK! What a pathetic boxer! I would to hear that self-proclaimed comment from the Boxing Analysts, BWAA, BUT NOT from his own mouth! KFC

  • Simon says:

The proud will be humbled and comes May 1st, this proud man will experience a humbling lesson in his life. This man is a lunatic, declaring himself the greatest boxer of all time? Greatness is not a self-proclaimed achievement. The sport, the fans and the world will declare such greatness as they see fit. To start with, what title this man hold? NONE. What awards did he receive lately? NONE. Who’s the greatest fighter he has defeated in the past and lately? NONE. His Zero defeat record is a JOKE.

  • Fight Fan says:

I’m sorry Floyd but you are behind a lot of boxers in the all time list. Ali, Robinson, Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran to name half a dozen. Your fellow American boxing writers don’t agree either, as they have recently voted Pacman the boxer of the decade. Greatest of all time in your own mind!

  • Tom C says:

I doubt Mayweather as good as he is would have beaten Ray Robinson, Leonard or even Duran. Never mind the “0″, Sven Ottke had it, Julio Cesar Chavez jr has it so numbers can lie

  • Mosweather says:

There’s a big possibility that Floyd will pay Mosley to Loose the fight. He has to protect his 40-0 at all cost. And it’s very easy to do because they are both GBP. Like what Floyd always claims, it’s all business for him.

  • Fight Fan says:

Mayweather is talking garbage as usual.

  • joe says:

Has anyone ever asked the question of why Floyd all of the sudden wants to clean up HIS sport of boxing, and why he chose to take that burden when it came to fight Manny. For every fight now and until he retires, he will have to ask for the dope test, or he will come off as what he really is, a coward.

Did he ever ask any fighters prior to Manny that they have to subject themselves to drug test the way he wants? Please..Gimme a break, don’t get me wrong, Floyd is a great athlete, and a very good technical boxer, but fighter he isn’t in the sense of being the all time greatest “fighter”. Those comments are an insult to “His Sport”.

If Floyds Nuts were as big as his mouth, he would have an argument.

  • Frankly says:

Greatest fighter that ever lived. Yeah right, he must be on to something as he might be taking drugs for his episodes of delusions. Are not these drugs illegal in boxing?

  • Boxxerr says:

He has a blueprint to loose. Never fought top fighters in his division. If his skills is that good then fight A+ fighter from now on with no excuses cause you can’t call yourself great if you make excuses. All great fighters had the commission and promoters set up fight then show the world who’s the greatest.

  • NEL says:

MEN & WOMAN LIE NUMBERS DONT BUT THEY ALSO DONT SAY THE WHOLE STORY.THIS DUDE IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING CONSIDER 1 OF THE TOP 20 HES BEEN ALWAYS AVOR MATCH AGAINS HIS OPPONENT.WHAY ABOUT IF HE LOSSES TO MOSLEY IS HE STILL THE BEST FIGHTER THINK ABOUT IT THE BEST FIGHTERS IN THE WOLRD ALL LOST A FIGHT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ROCKY MARCIANO AND HE WAS LUCKY THAT HE WAS ITALIAN IN A MAFIA RUN ERA.FOR FLOYD TO THINK THIS SHOWS THE MONSTER THAT THIS ERA MAID.WHERE NUMBERS ARE USED AS A WAY TO JUDGE A FIGHTERS CAREER AND NOT THE OPPONENTS HE’S FACE.THANKS TO PROMOTERS AND THE INTERNET FIGHTERS TODAY GET MORE EXPOS TO THE PUBLIC EVEN IF THERE FIGHTING OUT MATCH GUYS THE TRUTH IS THAT IF FLOYD FOUGHT BACK IN THE DAYS HE WOULD HAD A LOST ON HIS RECORD 20 FIGHTS AGO.THIS DUDE IS A CLOWN AND ONE THING IS FOR SURE HE WONT LEAVE THE GAME BEFORE THE GAME LEAVE HIM.

  • Boxrec says:

Mayweather needs to beat Mosley and then Pacman and then call it a day, and then he’ll be able to say he’s one of the greatest ever.

Forget that washed up Cotto, he was dead from the Margacheat fight.

LMAO at people still calling paul williams name, and for a lanky freak like that to fight Mayweather, would that not be what people diss Money May for the size difference would be ridiculous, besides Martinez gave him life and death in his last fight how does he deserve a shot?

  • Josh says:

Sometimes people carry their own chair. Let’s humble our selves and let the people judge. I agree with Floyd, he’s 40-0 but it doesn’t mean that he is the best fighter ever, how come that Pacquiao got the “BOXER OF DECADE? In this sport, it is about your performance in the ring that you get more credit not your accomplishment.

  • jocal88 says:

well i hate mayweather now..better then sugar ray rovinson? leonard? ali? come on hes talking out of hjis as! He thinks hes the sit because of his 40-0 record, all that does is leave a bunch of questions! like what if he fought cotto in his prime?
what if he fought mosley at lightweight? undefeated records mean sht..look at JC chavez jr? hes undefeated too does that make him great..no!..fin hate floyd

  • JACK FLORES says:

EVEN IF FLOYD MAYWEATHER PROCLAIMS HIMSELF AS THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF ALL TIME, HE CANNOT MATCH MANNY PACQUIAO’S ACHIEVEMENT. IN COMPARISON TO BOXING VICTORIES, MAYWEATHER’S OPPONENTS ARE PAST THEIR PRIMES, WHEREAS PACQUIAO’S ARE C U R R E N T CHAMPIONS. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE. PACQUIAO HAS A TOTAL OF 55 BOXING BOUTS, WHEREAS MAYWEATHER HAS ONLY 40, A DIFFERENCE OF 15. THEREFORE HE HAS TO FIGHT 15 MORE TIMES TO MATCH MANNY’S. TODATE MANNY’S DEFEAT IS 3. IF MAYWEATHER FIGHTS 15 MORE TIMES, HE COULD PROBABLY SURPASS MANNY’S. A VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLES AROUND THE GLOBE, STILL CONSIDER MANNY PACQUIAO AS THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF ALL TIME NOT MAYWEATHER AND I WON’T EITHER BELIEVE HE IS.

  • Drake says:

He’s the greatest in my book…I’m looking at him as a boxer because all of the fights wins etc are fact…I’m not going to try to act like I know him and judge him off of a character he plays to make money…

  • Gareth says:

hhmm strange, thought he didn’t fight for bragging rights. Floyd is full of sh*t sam as ever. He will go down as a great fighter in the ring and a clown outside of the ring who avoided some tough fights.

  • Boxxerr says:

He will be tha greatest loud mouth to ever loose.

  • K Genus says:

    Dingo

Your correct as the casual fan dont understand the intricasies of the sport that seperate the best from the mediocre and excitig fighters. so for the people that matter, the students and teachers of the sport, they will forever remember floyd for his extraordianary talent in the ring.

  • chakyun says:

“He´s here to clean up the sport of boxing. He´s the greatest boxer ever lived and he never used no drug enhancement drugs”. Wow, now I am more convinced there´s something wrong with his brain. He´s hallucinating! He just slapped the faces of Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali. And what about Xylocaine w/c he is using to numb his fist during fights, I guess he thinks it his VITAMIN. Well there´s no cure with this twisted little mans sickness. His brain left the earth!

  • Boxingfan3 says:

Do u think mayweather could of beat julio Cesar Chavez at his prime???

  • Fraud says:

I agree with Golden Boxer and Pete. If Mayweather beats Mosley, then Pacquiao, then the best fighter at 154 (cotto/pavlik/p. williams) and then retires undefeated and as arguably the greatest defensive fighter and biggest PPV earner in boxing history and as the guy who cleaned up the sport, it will be hard to argue against him as the greatest fighter in boxing history. Does all automatically makes him teh greatest? No….but it puts his name on a very short list. If these things come to be what more could he have done and who else could he have fought to make his case?

  • Free one says:

In his generation maybe… But of all time.. Don’t think so.. After mosley, he still have PAC n tha guy name punisher… N if he beY those 3… Fo sure he is.. Not yet Floyd.. Over sli n ss rbinson… He’s troppin… That’s Floyd tho.. Got Lot of cofindince.. He’s undefeated.. That means he’s backing in up..

  • chris says:

He is the best ww in the last 10yrs not ever.People knock him for not ko people. But i realize thats exciting but not everything. He is one of the most skilled ever.I wish he didnt have hand problems because he would be so feared if he could go after people more.Watch tape a him when he was younger he was nasty.

  • Dingo says:

For most casual fans, Mayweather is boring to watch. He will be forgotten 5 years after he retires.

  • the-sweet-science says:

he honestly thinks he’s better than sugar ray robinson? what a joker!

  • golden boxer says:

if he beats mosley for his 7th world title beats pacquiao for his 8th beats cotto at 154 for his 9th then beats pavlik and wins the middleweight title for his 10th world title in 6 weight classes he can retire end of 2011 undefeated and without doubt the greatest to ever done it also with victories over a prime corrales at 130 a prime castillo at 135 and wins over hatton marquez de la hoya and gatti it would be hard to argue

  • Big Easy says:

I agree 100% their is no blueprint to beat Mayweather. And as for Mosley and Pacquiao who have eight losses between them, and also not forgetting both of these fighters are on some kind of steroids!!!!!

  • botyok says:

    whatever chicken!!

  • Pete says:

If Mayweather beats Mosley, Pacquiao and Williams then sure… he has an argument for the greatest fighter. But he needs to face all three of them of he has no chance of being viewed as the greatest.
