Margarito will be watching Pacquiao-Clottey, says he wants to fight Pacquiao

By Jim Dower: Antonio Margarito (37-6, 27 KO’s) says in an article at the Los Angeles Times he plans on attending this Saturday’s fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, because he wants to set up a fight with Pacquiao in the future. Margarito, 31, hasn’t fought since losing his World Boxing Association welterweight title to Shane Mosley in January 2009. Before the fight, a plaster-like substance was found on his hand wraps. Margarito later on lost his boxing license to the California Athletic Commission.

Margarito’s license was revoked for one year, and as of now, he still doesn’t have his license back. However, he can still fight Pacquiao in the future if the Filipino star is willing to fight Margarito out of the country. Margarito says “I’m definitely here to help make that fight; I want that fight to happen. Everyone in Mexico wants to see me fight Pacquiao.”

It’s unclear how Pacquiao would feel about fighting Margarito, especially if he had to travel to Margarito’s home country to make the fight. However, Margarito has one thing going for him in trying to land a fight with Pacquiao – he shares the same promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank. Arum likes Margarito and has stuck by his sides throughout the entire ordeal over the hand wraps. Arum wants to match Margarito up with Pacquiao and is hoping to make the fight happen in the near future.

If it does take place, it could wind up in one of the large Mexican stadiums that fit 100,000 people. Margarito is well liked in Mexico, and this is a fight that would really well in Mexico. Margarito plans on fighting for the first time in over a year on May 8th, when he faces Carson Jones in Mexico. Margarito was hoping to have gotten his boxing license back by now, but it’s looking like he’s going to have to wait longer to get it back.

But in the meantime, Margarito isn’t going to sit and wait any longer. He’s done his year and plans on continuing his boxing career. A fight against Pacquiao could be a real possibility, perhaps as early as 2011 if the Filipino star doesn’t go into politics and retire from the sport. Pacquiao will likely face the winner of the Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley bout coming up in May. If that fight can’t be put together for whatever reason, there may be a chance for Margarito.

Arum would like to make that fight happen, and aside from Mayweather-Pacquiao or Mosley-Pacquiao, it could be the next biggest bout that can be put together at this time. Margarito has a huge fan base in Mexico, so a fight against Pacquiao would be a big attraction over there and even in the United States. There are other options for Pacquiao besides Mayweather, Mosley and Margarito. He could face WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero, but the problem with that is Valero isn’t well known yet in the United States and isn’t a big star in Mexico either. Valero comes from Venezuela and has fought a good portion of his career in Japan.

  • LuvBoxing says:

They better not EVER let that cheater fight in the states again. He does not deserve a fight against Pac or PBF, period. He is a cheater.

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

Nice match up. But I don’t think this will happen anymore.

    Talk about falling from grace.

This is the guy that was mouthing off about Floyd Mayweather not too long ago, about some supposed $8 million offer that nobody except Bob Arum apparently laid eyes on.

Then he goes and nearly loses to Joshua Clottey, but catches a break when Josh breaks his hand early in the fight. He then loses the WBO to Paul Williams, starts loading his gloves, obliterates two Puerto Rican fighters, one of them being Cotto, who’d never been stopped before, but came out of the fight looking like he’d try to french kiss a blender.

He then gets caught with loaded gloves before his fight with Shane Mosley, because of Richardson’s sharp eyes, goes into the ring without his hands of stone, gets absolutely pummeled by Shane, loses the WBA, suspended by the CSAC, and then denied a license by the TSAC for a spot on the Pacquiao-Clottey undercard.

Was it all worth it Tony?

it would be a legendary fight if ever put together in mexico, the mexican redeemer vs the mexican killa from manila

it would be historic for both men, and symbolic…

for pac, it would be another historic fight in his storied career

for marg, it would be like a crucified redeemer who was crucified unjustly for substances that was placed there by his trainer, whom he had fired, that never added any hardness to his wraps as tested out by material scientist at caltech…

win loose or draw, the drama would fill a monthly long 24/7

  • Honestly says:

@Kray you are 100% correct… Thing is I DO see this fight happening before he fights Mayweather or Mosley… He will not accept the drug testing from Mayweather, and he will say Shane lost his last fight so he doesnt wanna fight him… Either that or he will fight Shane saying he gave Floyd a good enough fight to give him a shot… But I honestly see him fighting Margarito before Shane or Floyd… Just my opinion..

  • golden boxer says:

margarito should never been allowed to box again cheat should be in jail

  • yeah yeah says:

MARGARITO = PANAMA LEWIS,,,,WRAPPING HIS GLOVES IS OVER THE TOP CHEATING,,,PLUS PAC WILL DESTROY HIM TOO,

  • kray says:

If Pac can’t fight Mayweather or Mosely this year, looks like Margarito is the next biggest name, on that list @ WW. Why shouldn’t he fight Margarito, unless there’s a schedule conflict? It would be very easy to make that fight. The money would be there. He has 1/2 a chance of winning. I mean, he his facing Clottey, after all, who was on the way to beating Margarito (wraps or not), before he broke his hand. So,that does make some type of statement, right?

Oddly, I don’t see this article flooded with comments about why he should face Margarito. After all, Pac fights all comers, right? Margarito is CLEARLY expressing interest in a fight with Pac, isn’t he? He’s calling him out, basically.

What I see are comments about why he should not face him, such as “He doesn’t have enough status to face Pacman”, “Why should Pacman give him a shot?, etc.

However, once again, you set this double standard for Pac. Cotto faced Margarito, Clottey faced him. So, what’s the problem, with Pac stepping in there, against him? The plaster in the gloves trick, will not be an issue. They’re under the same promoter, and he’s all for it, and since Pac (by his own admissions) lets the promoter make the fights, this should be a slam dunk–provided no other viable options are on the table.

It’s ridiculous, because, if Pacman expresses disinterest in facing Margarito (like he did Yuri Foreman), because, he’s “too tall” or whatever, that will be excusable.

But, when Floyd was given the choice to face the lineal, Ring Magazine, and WBC Champion, Baldomir, for more money, status, etc. or face a relative unknown in Margarito (who at the time had his biggest win over Kermit Cintron and lost to Daniel Sotos, just 2 fights before that), you say he is ducking, or he’s scared, etc.

If that is not hypocrisy, in it’s clearest form, I don’t know what it.

  • CSRCX2 says:

    margarito FTW

  • Bob says:

Arron, Mosley was paying Balco $800 to $1200 checks for the Clear, now what kind of Baffon would give that kind of money for Amino Acids?

  • Aaron Pryer says:

I may be wrong but Shane Mosley was given a lie detector test that proved he truly was not aware what he was using was steriods, while what Margarito did was clear to him and his trainer as being illegal, and that is the difference between these 2 situations. This man knowingly stepped in the ring with a substance in his gloves that he knew could potentially harm are even kill his opponent. Bob Arum should be ashamed to even still be promoting this man.

  • Aaron Pryer says:

Paul Williams once threw over a 1,000 punches in a fight.
I’d love to see Pacquiao fight this guy at welter weight, but it will never happen. The days of Leonard and Hearns are over.

  • Bob says:

Al Asesino most Blacks recieve free Passes. But People like Toney who curses out promoters will get suspended. Basically you still got to be Yes Sirrr, Uncle Tom type black to recieve passes.

  • huitzi says:

Im a fan of margarito, if mosley still fighting i dont see why margarito cant. and id love too see pacquiao take over 100 punches per round . Go Margarito!

  • MarathonMan1 says:

    How low can Arum go?

  • Boss says:

  • yeah says:

that would be a good fight plaster vs roidz hel yeah set it up

  • Jay says:

Gee, I’d rather see Margarito rematch with Miguel Cotto and Kermit Cintron before he goes on to new business.

  • Arnel says:

You don’t deserve to fight Pacquiao and that’s it.

  • save by the bell says:

Go back to mexico margarito. You dont deserve a payday

  • kevin says:

    ef effin margacheeto

  • Frankly says:

PACMAN, the Mexecutioner, fighting Margarito in Mexico is like fighting in a lion’s den. I don’t think this is going to happen. PACMAN will only have two fights at most. Hopefully one of them would be against PBF or Mosley.
