Malignaggi thinks he’d dominate Maidana

By Jim Dower: Former International Boxing Federation light welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (27-3, 5 KO’s) really likes his chances if he was to ever face WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s). In an article at Boxing Talk, Malignaggi, 29, says “I think Maidana wins a round against me. People are criticizing [Amir] Khan for taking me on instead of Maidana, like he belongs ahead of me or something. What has Maidana accomplished that was so good? I’m a former world champion, he isn’t.”

What Malignaggi fails to see is that Maidana hits incredibly hard and stopped top prospect Victor Ortiz in the 6th round last year in June. The fight was shown on HBO and it was an exciting fight in which Maidana was knocked down several times in the fight and got up off the deck each time to continue to take the fight to the hard hitting Ortiz. Eventually, Maidana took Ortiz out in the 6th, knocking him down in the round.

Malignaggi clearly has the much better experience compared to Maidana with wins over Edner Cherry, Herman Ngoudjo, Lovemore N’dou and Juan Diaz. However, the wins over N’dou and Ngoudjo were close and controversial. Some people felt that Malignaggi should have lost both of those fights. Also, Malignaggi was taken out by Ricky Hatton in 2008 in an 11th round stoppage in November. Maidana, a fighter with big power in both hands, would likely be more than a handful for Hatton to have to deal with, even in the prime of his career.

As for Malignaggi saying that Maidana couldn’t win even one round against him, I think he’s dead wrong. I think Malignaggi might win some rounds narrowly while he’s running from Maidana and pecking with quick shots and then moving immediately to stay out of the way of Maidana. However, Maidana looked good in cutting off the ring against Ortiz when Victor tried to use movement in the 6th round of their fight.

Maidana was on him incredibly fast, and showed a ton of power at close range. Most fighters are only able to throw with big power at the point where they can extend their arms full. Maidana, though, is able to generate an enormous amount of power at close range, which is what makes him so dangerous. Maidana was beaten by Andriy Kotelnik in controversial 12 round split decision in February 2009 in a fight that took place in Germany, the adopted country of Kotelnik.

Malignaggi is bothered that boxing fans question Khan’s rationale for fighting the feather-fisted Malignaggi rather than the knockout artist Maidana. It’s obviously hard for Malignaggi to accept that fans are angry with Khan for what they see as him ducking Maidana to go after a fighter who has zero power.

However, if Malignaggi saw it from the perspective of the fans, who realize that Khan has a weak chin and is vulnerable against a fighter like Malignaggi, then Malignaggi would understand why fans prefer that Khan face Maidana. Khan does well against weak punchers like Malignaggi; hence that’s why he was chosen in the first place to fight Khan.

i think the majority of ppl on here box or have done at some time or another but the point i was getting at is its about timing the punch…paulie has stunned a few ppl and it was all to do with timing…ask diaz and cotto and the 5 ppl he stopped!!

and regarding hatton he walks through every1 because he fights with his face…hell take 4 to throw 1?

  • jean says:

my personal opinion, khan beats malignaggi because lets face it khan murders anyone who has no punching power. he has the reach advantage, height and hand speed. hows malignaggi supposed to handle that? his edge has always been boxing from range and circling. against maidana, thats a different story. but if he mirraculously wins i dont think he’ll get past alexander or bradley.

  • boxing fan says:

    malignaggi stfu!you’re a joke!

  • Blood and Guts says:

If they ever fought, Maidana would win by KO…Is Malignaggi that stupid to call out Maidana? I hope he is, I’d like to see that bum get carried out on a stretcher. Youtube as many Maidana fights as you can and you’ll see what the hype is!!!

  • mario says:

If you don’t punch hard the other guy won’t be hurt. I box and i know how it is to get punched, You do feel the punches but it does not hurt at all like you would think it would. ask cotto and hatton.

    @ mario
come on “when cotto realised his punches didnt hrt”?? course his punches hurt…a 7yr old could crack you in the mouth and your gonna feel it….although paulie is feather fisted and aint got a KO punch its all about the tining of the punch, just ask diaz and although cotto walked through paulies punches paulie sill stunned him in the fight? cant recall the round off hand but it happened but the consensus was that cotto was weak at the weight???

I got a feeling that golden boy will f*&k maidana’s career. They will try to match him with style’s that could beat him so in the end ortiz would not have to fight him again. I hope im wrong because i see a good future on maidana’s career.

people here who say maidana sucks are people who haven’t follow his career this guy has tremendous punching power and pretty good speed ( boxers with his power don’t have half the speed he has) this guy has like a 6th sense and is able to tell every time a punch hurt his opponent and gets like an adrenaline rush and finishes his opponents. Having a 98% ko ratio is not easy, that shows how much power he has. Only 2 guys he didnt knockout 1 was a 6 round fight(short fight, he could of ko him if he had more rounds) and kotelnick which covered his face the whole fight, this guy has a great defense khan with his speed only landed 17% of the punches (which 3/4 of the critics and people thought Maidana won but was on the land where kotelnick fought pretty much every fight, so he was going to have to ko him to get the decision). He beat Victor Ortiz, De la hoya and all golden boy saw gold every time they saw Ortiz. They probably watched maidana’s last fight who looked nervous on his first tittle match and thought he was the perfect opponent to show how good ortiz was beating a 98% ko ratio but in the end found out that maidana was 50 times much better then they thought (maidana showed how hungry he was for a belt in that fight). Only fighters who are going to beat maidana in my opinion are boxers witch a huge amount of boxing skills and a world class chin to go the 12 rounds because as soon as he lands his shots and knows your hurt your done unless the bell saves you.

Everyone in here who thinks malinaggi would dominate maidana is jst ignorant about the sport. Watch malinaggi vs cotto and then watch ALL of maidana’s fights. Maidana can close the ring and will punch malinaggi harder then cotto. All maidana has to do is do exacly what cotto did he has the power(his punpches harder then cotto)about the same speed and is extremely determined to get to the top. The top light welter weight’s in the end will be marcos maidana, victor ortiz, devon alexander , and timothy bradley.. And khan could be in the top 4 but to gain the respect to in that list he is going to have to prove everyone he can hang with hard punchers. Also victor ortiz is top contender again people who don’t really watch boxing and saw his fight against maidana think he is not good enough but im sure he is gonna end up being in the top 3 in the end. Golden boy would not waste all that money they are if they don’t think he is gonna be the best.

  • mario says:

i think malinaggi is pretty good fighter but maidana would do exacly what cotto did realized his punches did not hurt at all and throw bombs at him..and we all saw how that fight ended. Maidana would destroy him, he would let him punch him a few times and then throw a bunch of punches him self. Maidana is not a slow fighter like people think he is a lot faster then ricky hatton with a LOTT more power and much more accuracy and with an outstanding chin.

  • Yankiedoodledo says:

I agree with Malignaggi i think he would dominate Maidana.

  • Got Skillvoid says:

Malignaggi has a point, what has he actually done? Ok he beat Ortiz but that should have been an easy night for Victor and he made a hash of it!

  • Anish says:

The Maidana hype out of control. He would become the next Salita if he got in the ring with Khan who has WAY to much speed for him. Malignaggi on the other hand poses some interesting problems but doesn’t get credit due to his poor ko ratio.

  • jb says:

I agree with everything Paulie said. He gets no respect because of his Ko record. And yet no one can put him to sleep. I doubt Khan can score the KO on Malignaggi. Everyone who fights Paulie thinks they can walk through his soft punches but once they get in the ring it’s a different story. They then realize how difficult that is. Hatton was closest to walking through his punches but even he couldn’t stop Paulie. McGirt did that for him and got fired basically. Paulie is a veteran fighter now and knows how to neutralize an opponents offense and frustrate them. Khan will miss alot, get frustrated, and not be able to adjust.

  • Lowe says:

I think Maidana would stand a very good chance against Paulie. What could Paulie and his 5 KO’s do to discourage Maidana from stalking him down? Marcos could rush in with no fear of getting hurt. I dont like Khan but I hope he destroys Paulie.

  • Drake says:

I have some serious doubts on Khan’s chin; that’s the only reason Maidana may have a chance to beat him. Khan is an all around better boxer though.

  • Alan says:

This will all become a non subject when Maidana loses his next fight. No one will be calling for it then, all this hype is based on his biggest victory over a twice beaten Ortiz

  • dayyammmm says:

Maidana sucks, Paulie would box circles around the guy. Khan should have just taken the mandatory and fought him, but Roach and GBP didn’t want to risk putting their Humpty Dumpty-chinned investment in against another slugger. So Paulie got the call.

  • dave says:

wow what an insightfull interesting article!”!!! really didnt know all of those things before!!!!!!

  • Kid Dynamite says:

Maidana may have got off canvas couple of times to win but malagnaggi fought on against cotto when he had fractured cheekbone and busted up…so if your insinuating that madaina has heart for doing what he did then surely paulie has heart? he needs it as a non puncher to take hard shots and carrying on…and as feather fisted as paulie is it all depends on timing!! ive seen cotto and diaz take some hard shots and paulie stunned them both…good luck to my fellow northerner but if khan gets stopped (which is unlikely) but if he does HE IS THROUGH cause who else would he fight?

  • Pete says:

Maidana is over-rated and I don’t understand why everyone is jumping on this guy as the next big thing. He had his shot at Kotelnik and got BEAT. So he has beaten Ortiz, so what?

Khan destroyed Kotelnik then destroyed his mandatory. So now he gets to fight Malignaggi who is a much better boxer then Maidana. If Maidana gets by his next opponent then he gets another chance at the title but I wouldn’t hold your breath, the guy is just not that good.

  • HODGY says:

I think we should all wait on the critisizing game before we attack khan. he did fight a mandatory fight in last bout so why should he have to fight 2 in a row? it makes sense for him to fight mallinaggi seen as he is a well known boxer over here in britain and im guessing he is well known over there in the states too. if he does get by mallinaggi then doesnt fight madaina then critisize away but lets give him chance first
