Khan-Malignaggi: Can Paulie shock the world and beat Amir?
By William Mackay: With two months to go before the May 15th bout between WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (22-1, 16 KO’s), few boxing fans are giving the 29-year-old Malignaggi much of any chance at beating Khan in this fight. It seems that few people think that Malignaggi can win this fight despite how unproven Khan still is as a fighter. To be sure, Malignaggi will have to likely fight the perfect fight to get a win over the speedy 23-year-old Khan, but it’s within the possibility. Khan has already proven to be vulnerable in his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott in 2008.
The only thing that Malignaggi needs to worry about is getting hit with one of Khans big right hand shots. Amir has developed this punch during the past few months and seems to be able to generate a lot of power with it. Khan used his right hand early to drop his last opponent Dimitri Salita in the 1st round and then later take him out in the same round.
Khan will probably be like a kid in the candy store and will go back to his right hand to see if he can reproduce the same results against Malignaggi. Khan is beatable against a big puncher, and unfortunately for Malignaggi he doesn’t fit in that category. However, Malignaggi is capable of throwing hard when he puts everything he has in his shots. I’d suggest Malignaggi train hard at putting more power in his punches, and then look to time Khan to try and take him out.
If this fight goes to a decision, I doubt Malignaggi will get the win because Khan will be hard to hit with his constant movement. Malignaggi could open some eyes with his own hand speed. He’s not as fast as Khan, but I think he’s probably the fastest fighter that Khan will have faced up to this point in his career. Malignaggi’s hand speed could give Khan problems, especially when Malignaggi starts countering him.
It’s one thing having good hand speed, but it’s often tough for a fighter when he has to fight someone who also punches fast. The fighter that wins isn’t always the one with the faster hands. Malignaggi moves better on his feet than Khan, has a better sense of the flow of a fight and seems to more coordinated.
Khan just seems like a young guy that’s been blessed by fast reflexes but still doesn’t know how to use them for his benefit. Although his trainer Freddie Roach has taught him some things, Khan still seems uncoordinated and clumsy looking as he moves around the ring. Malignaggi hurt Juan Diaz in his last fight, so it’s possible that he can hurt or drop Khan if he connects with anything hard.

Khan will win with a second round knockout
do us a favour paulie, knock khan out !
Amir Khan is gonna use Paulie Mankylanky as a stepping stone to better fights. Paulie can do no more than turn up and hope that he isnt looking like he has been in a car crash come the 12th – if it gets that far. He wont even see the shot that KOs him. And yes, I am a Khan fan – but only cos he has got the skills shizz!!!!!!!!!!
Come on Weslad lol. Paulies been in big fights before, khan hasnt fought anyone! Malignaggi will show khan up for the fraud that he is, AND IF HE DOESNT THEN ALEXANDER, BRADLEY OR MAIDANA DEFINATLY WILL
i agree with weslad, people talk abt khans chin but they forget he moves likes rain from ninja assasin and throws 8-9 punches a sec like speedagonzalez, also his footwork is improving and so’s his defense… in todays cut throat economic world you wudnt invest millions in a boxer if they werent gonna give u the rewards!! Khan future p4p hof…btw im not even his fan lool
pete why are you writing malignaggi off so soon?
paulie may not have the knock out power but he is very tough with alot of heart dont forget the cotto fight!!!
paulie wont have to many problems with khans speed he is a very tactical fighter and he is not stupid his defence is very very good i think khan by lop sided decision unfortunatly !!!!!
Amir Khan is not all hype!!!!!!,ive watched him fight a few times and the kid is like lightning, and believe me he,s got power too,!!!!1,,,people make the mistake of thinking he,s got no chin,,,well that punch wouldv knocked a horse out that night when he got floored,,but thats not the reason he fell,,,he had no defense ,,walked onto the punch,,,,under roach khans defense has improved 10 fold,!!!!!!!,,,,,so good luck to all you contenders who make the mistake of believing your gonna catch him,, like that again,….!!!!!!!!because under roach i just cant see that happening,!!!!and i beleive with that speed and tempo he fights at and the volume of punches hes throwing hes gonna be a nightmare to beat!!!!! !paulii,s gonna get sparked out,,,or the corner throw the towel in,!!!!!
A victory over KHAN aint nothing to brag about. KHAN=ALL HYPE
Khan will win on points IMO. Malignaggi will prob win around 4 rounds, and Khan will win the rest.
Paulie is another typically ideal hand picked opponent for Khan.
Simple fact here – Paulie can’t punch = Khan’s glass jaw will be safe.
alexander has impressed me alot knocking out urango… khans needs to impress against malignaggi, must be a knockout, i sincerely hope alexander and bradley and khan fight this year to find out who is the best 140, atleast 2 of the 3 mentioned must fight!!! and victor needs to rematch maidana and knock him out!!!
No it won’t be a shock, Paulie is expected to win.
Paulie is a good boxer with skills and he is a good athelete, but he is never been in the ring with someone who can throw 5 punches in one second.Period. If your an american/new yorker and have never seen amir khan check on youtube.
im shocked by how many comments there are in favour of malignaggi. have you guys seen these two fighters in action. come on malignaggi actually made hatton look like a good boxer! im certainly not an avid fan of khan, he has a poor defence and no chin. but this is a no contest. malignaggi has no punch power to worry khan, and khan is possibly the fastest puncher i have ever seen. you will see at most 4 rounds of flurrying punches bouncing of malignaggis head before khan has him out of there. i certainly wouldnt be surprised at a 1st round ko.
Only dropped bums saliva was a bum
Accusing Pac of taking Enhancement Drugs, Paulie is just a cheap version Of Floyd when it comes to trash talking, both should take a leaf out of Ali’s book he was the best at it. Khan is going to give a severe beating on that mouth of Paulie can’t wait for this massacre to take place.
50 50 match
b chttj
Paulie’s recieved a few gift decisions as a former World champion, and I very much doubt Khan will need any such help. It would be a shock if Malignaggi some how managed beat Khan, as he has zero power and very few advantages in this fight. His experience and chin, are going to be greatly tested in this fight (especially his chin, as Malignaggi is wide open to right-cross).
If a faded Hatton pretty much managed to hit Paulie at will, what’s Khan going to do to him?
Saying can Paulie shock the world is giving Khan way too much credit. I expect this fight to be competitive and would not be surprised if Paulie pulls it out.
Paulie is fighting at his career best right now and he will BEAT khan
I exoect Paulei to beat him up.
No real boxing fan would dismiss Pauli in this fight. He has fought and won against much better comp. Don’t sleep on his skills. He could make Khan look foolish. This is a great match up.
khan will nok him out ..
yeah kahn can punch hard and will take paulie out mid rounds imo
Kahn might be a big puncher but malignaggi has been in the ring with bigger punchers than kahns ever fought and taken them to 12 rounds, i dont get how people are underating Paulie, he has a good chin, fast handspeed and ability. Ill almost go to say that he is not as light a puncher as people make him out to be, he certainly looked like he rocked juan diaz in his last fight. But didnt capitalise on it like a confident puncher would.
i betting on malignaggi to win.
khan gna tap tht ass
fair comment pal i personally think pauli will win in the later rounds but thats why boxing the greatest sport on earth u never know
Against Salita, Khan simply threw a right hand. His first right hand of the fight and it was too fast and too sharp that Salita simply didn’t see it. Thats the kind of speed and power that Khan brings to fight. Against Barrera he simply dominated him, he was all over him and won every round by a country mile. Barrera was lucky because he could of got beat up bad. Graham Earl who was beaten by Katsidis in 5 rounds was KO’d by Khan in 1.
Against Bredis Prescott he simply showed us that we may have another Lennox Lewis here – seems a level above everyone in his division but unless he is on his game 100%, he’ll get dropped. Which makes him an exciting fighter. He’s box office and will beat Malignaggi like no one else has done. The fight will be over before the 12th because Khan will be too much, too fast and too strong.
just exactly why wud it be a shock if paulie beat kahn other way round more like im not keane on any of these guys but come on people surley paul is the favourite he been in with the far better opposition lets not be fooled by the kahn media circus unless the gbp have paid off the judges its a paulie win for me fellas
good article. khan to win on a wide points margin. Paulie dosen’t have the power which is the main threat to Khan
sure if paulie fight as big as he talk ,then he up and coming, not….
fool yourself if you must Will
amir khan too quick and too powerful for him he won’t ko him but he will domiate him
