Katsidis says Kevin Mitchell “ran like a cat” from Prescott

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis (26-2, 21 KO’s) could be facing number #1 ranked Kevin Mitchell (31-0, 23 KO’s) at the Upton Park football stadium on May 15th. This is a large arena which seats 35,000 boxing fans. It’s debatable whether it sellout or not for this fight card, which reportedly includes a heavyweight clash between Sam Sexton and Danny Williams, but if it does it will be a lot of noise for the Australian Katsidis to have to deal with. Mitchell, 25, is hoping that the fight will take place at Upton Park, obviously wanting as big a crowd as possible to give him motivation for the fight.

It could be a positive for Mitchell if the fans help him fight at a higher level than normal, but it could be a negative too. It would be bad to get beat in front of all those fans, especially if it’s a bad beating like I think it’s going to be. Katsidis is probably the much bigger puncher of the two with by far the better experience. Mitchell has only been in with a handful of fighters I consider decent like Breidis Prescott for one. Mitchell beat Prescott by a 12 round decision in December 2009, in a fight that took place in England.

Mitchell used a lot of moment in that fight and only rarely stopped and threw a punch. Prescott missed a lot of his punches, but still ended up landing the harder shots. I gave the fight to Prescott eight rounds to four because he was the one making the fight and the one who landed the bigger shots. Mitchell ran through much of the fight and I was frankly bored out of mind watching it.

I can’t stand watching runners. Usually, Mitchell is a fighter that tends to mix it up with his opponents but he took the safe course against Prescott and put on his track shoes for the fight. In an article at Boxing news, Katsidis comments on the Mitchell-Prescott fight, saying “I saw the Prescott fight and he ran like a cat.” I have to agree with Katsidis.

I can’t remember the last time I saw a fighter run as much as Mitchell did in that fight. It was awful to watch and I was shocked that the referee didn’t take points away for all the running. At some point, I think the referee should have stepped in and taken a point to get Mitchell to start mixing it up more.

Mitchell, speaking about Katsidis, says “I fancy a late knockout.” Does he now? Well, I’d like to see Mitchell try. I’m not holding my breath on that happening. I see Mitchell running from Katsidis all night long in a survival mode type of fight. If Mitchell does try for a knockout, I see Katsidis taking him out quickly.

I think there is a huge gulf in talent between the two fighters and Katsidis going to prove that when he steps in the ring with Mitchell. It will be great if Mitchell actually tries to fight Katsidis instead of running. But I don’t believe for a second that Mitchell is going to try and fight him.

He says is right now, but once Mitchell gets a little taste of Katsidis’ power in the 1st round, he’ll be heading for cover to keep from getting hit. This is where I think it will be bad for the fight to be taking place at Upton Park, because with all those fans there at ringside, they might start booing and god that would really bad, wouldn’t it?

Mitchell ran because, when you have nearly 6 feet of fighter charging at you, wildly swinging away with those long arms, it tends to be a good idea to box (you know, the art of hitting and not being hit). Excessive holding, occaisionally throwing a punch, whilst peddling the entire fight, is something that Dirrell managed to achieve (not Mitchell).
Katsidis isn’t as powerful as some people are trying to make out, I can’t remember when he actually knocked-out a top ranked opponent. He’s a pressure-fighter with a poor defence, and is overly reliant upon hooks as his method of attack. Mitchell is the more well-rounded boxer, he won’t stand and trade with Katsidis, if it’s not in his interest to do so. Under Jimmy Tibbs, Mitchell has vastily improoved his punch evation, tacticle approach to fights, and has showed the kind of patience, to follow a gameplan through to it’s fruition (surprising, considering his attitude in previous fights).
    Mitchell by unanimous decision.
    a gameplan

Katsidis will win by KO. The big crowd will just make him more intent on putting on a show. Katsidis is a much more mature fighter then when he fought Earl or Cassamayor. He doesn’t take as many risks and his defense is significantly improved. The only chance Mitchell has of winning is to stand, trade punches and hope to land some big shots. He won’t be able to run and outbox Katsidis. Katsidis caught Cassamayor and Escobedo, both vastly superior boxers and counter punchers then Mitchell. Katsidis is one of the best conditioned fighters in the sport. He trains in Thailand where it is 36 to 40 degrees everyday and the gyms aren’t airconditioned. Katsidis can go 100% for 12 rounds and attack relentlessly. Mitchell won’t be able to handle the pressure and will either get KO’d or quit by the end of the 8th.

  • ashishwarrior says:

i agree with katsidis he did a direll on him mitchell built a carrer on fighting basically bums he knew he could beat up on he knew he could not do this with presscott so opted for dirrell tactics same really because at least his style before was exciting so what your sayin is mitchell as always looked to out box his opponents i think not

  • Daz G says:

You cant stand watching runners then why do you keep going on about andre “marathon man” dirrell in every other article you bag head.Dirrell should have won gold in the froch fight for clocking up all them miles.

Mitchell is a lot better than you give him credit for .In the prescott fight he moved about but to avoid prescotts wild punches and then counter because he obviously didn@t want to do a “khan” and stand in front of him waiting to get hit.

  • Joni says:

Scott u r a genius do u actually watch these fights or read what other Brit haters write and join the band wagon, Mitchell completely outboxed Prescott and Mitchell landed by far the better shots

  • Adam churms says:

ur probably the worst person ever invented!!!!!

  • Mc Swagger says:

“I can t stand runners” Dirrel baw heed!

  • tino says:

mitchell to win then gilfoid will have a fit, then once dirrell gets ko’d he’ll be crying foul! he should just stop writing and stick to his day job, name 1 fight just 1 fight you have predicted correctly?

  • Vlad says:

Mitchell is gonna get creamed . Once he feels Katsidis’s power, he’ll run & try to survive for 12 rounds if he makes it to the 12th. Katsidis is just too strong with way bigger fight experience.

  • Cadillacin979 says:

Look for Katsidas to stop Mitchell in the 7th!

  • The Northfleet mauler says:

I think you make some sound comments about Kat. He is a powerhouse of a fighter. Pressure fighter of high order, however I think you underestimate Mitchell. He is a good counter puncher and has real ko power. I have watched some fights of Katsidis and see areas where Mitchell can capitalise. Firstly Katsidis is wide open when swinging with his hooks. He was exposed by Graham earl in their bout when Earl put him on his ass, although ultimately losing the fight. Earl isn’t in the same league as either of these fighters though. Also Kat was tagged, knocked down and ultimately ko’d by Casamayor in a thrilling fight that could’ve gone either way.

I think it comes down to if Mitchell can handle the pressure and power that the Kat will exsert. Can he take a Kat power shot and not be intimidated? Will he box him or brawl it out? I don’t think it wise for Mitchell to brawl with the more experienced man at the higher level. Mitchell’s best chance is to box and counter punch. If he does this I can see him frustrating Katsidis and ko’ing him in good style.

I am English and will be supporting Mitchell, but he hasn’t fought anyone with the power or ranking of the Kat and this will be a yard stick for how good Mitchell really is. I hope he sticks it all over the aussie prick and ko’s him and goes on to prove he can fight at the highest level. I shall be watching and praying that Mitchell does the business.

Kevin is going places, unlike amir khan he has done it the hard way, he has proven himself at all levels and im over the moon to see him now fighting at top level. he is hungry, heavy handed, has a big heart with excellent boxing skills and he can also take a punch. he did not run from prescott he simply boxed his ears off and in the course of the fight took one or two full blooded blows of prescotts but did not flinch. however when amir got hit with a single jab from presscott he looked like bambi on ice, amir was also given a fortune to turn pro, got dropped by limuned and a over the hill gomez, he had dvds books out way before fighting at the top level and on box office, due to his glass jaw he has been spoonfed names way,way paced their best or anyone who doesnt punch hard, although you cant blame him taking the easy money or the easy fights, he has missed a huge learning curve and the money to early will only add to a lack of desire. kevin has not had any of the above and this shows. and i will put my house on it he will acheive far more than amir and if they ever get it on you will be seeing bambi again

    @RNC

I liked your comments about the crowd advantage, I feel having the crowd on your side doesn’t matter one jot especially if you are fighting a superior fighter.
On to the fight which I think will be an excellent match up I am a fan of both fighters, how can you not enjoy watching Katsidis win or lose?

If you have only watched Kevin Mitchell against Prescott then you need to look at his earlier fights when he was actually being criticised for being too aggresive!!

He showed boxing skills in that fight I didn’t know he possessed!! Which is why I think this is a great fight in the making becouse it will be interesting to see how Mitchell will react if he gets hurt and if he abandons his defence and tries to slug it out with Katsidis as he has done in the past!!

I am going to predict a Mitchell victory after a fight of the year has unfolded by a UD.

  • Hudson says:

Scotty Scotty Scotty once again you have embarrassed yourself. I can’t wait for your next Haye article repeating the same thing over and over again about how he threw 10 punches a round and stank the joint out. blah blah blah. I predict you won’t be able to help yourself which is 100% more accurate than your predictions about boxing!

  • Danny* says:

A lovely wind up. But Scott, your articles are attracting fewer and fewer comments regardless of how controversial your comments are. My favourite line has to be ‘they might start booing and god that would really bad, wouldn’t it?’ God – wouldn’t it just?! lol. T0sser. No more comments on this article but just an unrelated question…..does it hurt when Dirrell bums you?

  • hitman! says:

kevin will beat him good..hes the best lightweight in the world right now

  • RNC says:

Gilfoid, what is it with you and crowds?

Did you have a bad experience at an N-Sync concert or something??

The way you blab on it’s almost as if the home crowd is going to cause Katsidis to punch himself in the face.

Also, why is it bad for a fighter to run as part of a game plan against a knockout artist (Prescott) or say a giant (Valuev), but it’s no problem to run against someone the same size and height as you, like Dirrell did against Froch?

  • graham says:

Kevin Mitchell needs to put on a bit more muscle to have a bit more power in his gloves. He’s a good boxer but he can’t rely on movement alone, he needs to be able to discourage the opponents from coming forward.

The Earl-Katsidis fight was just crazy and no one should expect Mitchell to fight in that way. If he gets on his bike and relies on his boxing skills then he should win this fight.

    Kevin Mitchell – split decision.

  • ste says:

katsidis wont care if the fight is in upton park. look what he did to graham earl n that was in earls back garden. i see mitchell winning on a split decision .
