Guzman 9lbs over weight limit; fight still goes on

By Peter Wells: At last nights weigh in for the Guzman-Funeka much anticipated rematch, the fight was very close to dying, after Joan Guzman failed to make weight dramatically. Guzman wasn’t just over the Lightweight limit; he had also exceeded the Light Welterweight limit. The fight looked off for good, but despite the weight problems Guzman has been given the chance to fight on. The sacrifice is he can’t put on more than 6lbs over night until another weigh in this morning.
I wouldn’t think this should affect either fighter in the ring, and despite my thoughts that maybe Joan may come out and shock everyone tonight, I have to go with Funeka here. I see the South African winning unanimously with a confident display.

3 or 4 weeks ago Guzman released a statement saying he was sorry for Nate Campbell fiasco and said he has learned his lessen,… and would never disrespect the fans or the sport again after all the embarrassment he had to go thru,.. he also said that because of his diligent hard work,.. he would have no issues getting down to 135 and he was well within his targeted weight…. when a boxer cannot control his own body,… or keep his professional obligation by making weight,… he begins to lose credibilty…this time instead of his face being a mask of shame… he shows up all smiles at the weigh-in,… mr Guzman should either move up to 147 or just find another line of work entirely,… it’s not to fair to Ali or the fans…
he can fight in the WW division instead!

Guzman will be fined. He will have to pay at least 20% of his purse to the NSAC, if my memory is correct. This is insane though, nine pounds! That isn’t even close! WOW!
no way should this fight go ahead,guzman should be fined for this,there is no excuse for being this much over.

When is a good guy like Funeka going to get a break. Guzman is a joke. He had family issues you would think he would have more focus. He doesn’t deserve to be in there with Ali.

Joan Guzman what a waste of talent, If he cant make weight, he should really consider moving up in weigth, of if its a lack of effort, should really consider walking away from boxing, this is what the third time he fails.
