Duddy vs. Chavez Jr. in June – News

By Jim Dower: Middleweight contender John Duddy (29-1, 18 KO’s) will be fighting unbeaten Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) in June, according to news from Boxing Fanhouse. This is a splendid match-up of two contenders that as of yet as still almost entirely unproven in the light middleweight and middleweight divisions.

This is a good fight in that both Chavez Jr. and Duddy have a fairly significant fan base despite having never really proven that they belong in the top 15. Duddy, 30, is a slugger without much defense and who has been highly ranked in the middleweight division for well over a year. Duddy was beaten last year in a fight against Billy Lyell by a 10 round decision.

Duddy has come back from that loss with three wins over Michi Munoz, Juan Astorga, and Michael Medina, though none of those fighters were particularly impressive performances from Duddy. In his last fight, Duddy defeated Medina by a 10 round decision on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey bout on March 13th.

Duddy failed to impress in that fight, as he took a lot of shots from Medina and didn’t look all that powerful. Duddy did put in perhaps the best fight of the night on that card, but that’s not saying a whole lot because the entire card was filled with nothing but horrible mismatches from top to bottom.

Chavez Jr. defeated Troy Rowland by a 10 round decision in November. Chavez tested positive for the banned substance Furosemide, a diuretic. The Nevada Athletic Commission then gave Chavez Jr. a six month suspension. The suspension will end just in time for Chavez’s fight with Duddy in June.

The Duddy-Chavez fight is a kind of a curiosity, because both fighters are popular with a lot of fans, but neither of them seems to have enough talent to win a major title in the light middleweight or middleweight divisions.

It may be that neither of them ever wins a title during their career, unless they suddenly start to make some dramatic improvements in the near future. Duddy, now 30, would seem to be about as good as he’ll ever be. He probably won’t be getting any more powerful or faster than he is right now. Duddy might be able to capture a title if he moves down in weight to the light middleweight division and gets put in with one of the weaker champions, but I still have my doubts that he can do this.

Chavez, 24, has a lot of time to improve. However, he looks to be regressing as a fighter instead improved from what I’ve seen of him. At 6’0”, Chavez is likely going to wind up as a super middleweight or even a light heavyweight by the time he’s finished filling out. The problem with Chavez is that he fights in close like his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez, and tends to take a lot of punishment. He leaves himself open for a lot of shots and doesn’t have really good hand speed or big power.

  • PAT says:

Let’s be real and honest up front. John Duddy’s record is a carefully constructed sham picking his fights.
“Michael Medina’s ranked 45 in the world. And still Duddy only took it on split decision”

    what rank is Chavez jr

  • duddyfan says:

  • BLUE DOG says:

DUDDY WINS TKO IN 11 OR EVEN WORST CHAVEZ JR QUITS IN 9, THAT DEPENDS ON THE WEIGHT THEY FIGHT.

  • Chris Kelly says:

Chavez is finally gonna get the pasting he’s been protected from for so long ! Duddy is a strong and very powerfull live opponent for the son of a legend to have to face. After Chavez is exposed, Arum will drop him just like he dropped butterbean and find himself a new sideshow attraction with limited ability and start to shelter him too !

  • weslad says:

Looks like a very slow day on boxing news 24 dot com. They better start writing some absurd articles about Mayweather vs manny to get traffic up!

  • arroyo grande bob says:

lots of negative responses, but boxing isnt always about top fighters fighting each other. Two flawed fighters, but its intriguing. I think it may be entertaining. A candidate for “Boxing after dark”.

  • cl says:

yes, fishing will be better than that fight. if i don’t catch any fish for sure i will see real stars.

  • cl says:

thanks for the news, now i can look for something else to see in that month, let me know the time and day so i can go fishing all night.

  • Duke says:

hopefully this will be the last tv fight for the both.

  • wayner says:

  • Jimmy M. says:

wow if i am not mistaken, this is Chavez jr. real test. chavez jr. has 41 fights unbeaten and still doesnt have a title. he really needs to fight some top class opponents….i mean whats the point of taking all these fights and your not going n e where. chavez jr.HIGHLY overated and needs to quit if he aint gonna fight some top class opponents…pathetic… oh yeah and duddy isnt all that good n e way lol…BOB ARUM AND TOP RANK are killing boxing!

  • ste says:

well if i have trouble sleeping ill tune into this one.

  • New Guy says:

Okay, one’s a boring fighter and the other one failed a drug test. Why would anybody care about this fight?

  • stu says:

to the guy who said this:

“two fighters no 1 cares about, a fight no 1 will care about.”

whether you rate these two guys or not…they have pretty hefty fan bases for the level they are at. to say “no-one cares about them” is just plain wrong.

  • Finn says:

Duddy was impressive against Astorga with a 1st round KO, but didn’t look good against Medina. He’s hoping for a win over Chavez Jr. and than an Arum-assisted shot at Pavlik before the end of the year. Chavez Jr. looked bad in his last bout, giving the impression he didn’t want to be there. Still, both these guys are at roughly the same level, and if they both take the fight seriously, it could be worth seeing.

  • Macleod says:

two fighters no 1 cares about, a fight no 1 will care about.

  • King D says:

Chavez Jr. needs to retire. He’s milking his dads name for fame. That’s all there is to him. This kid is a bum. If he didn’t have the Chavez name he’d be cleaning picking up soda cans behind a gas station.

  • Realbox says:

At least he can punch (Duddy) the rest of Chavez’s matchup have been all punching bags, i hope chavez gets exposed as the lame fighter he is.

  • The Truth says:

2 OVERATED BUMS, THEY DESERVE EACH OTHER

  • Paul says:

    He’s being protected.

  • Rob says:

Duddy has not lived up to his expectations and Chavez Jr. has grossly underperformed. If Duddy ever wants to do anything in boxing this is his chance to notch a known name (albeit not a great fighter by any means) on his belt. The reason they haven´t put any real competition against Chavez Jr is because he´s honestly not that good and as soon as he loses his stock will tumble faster than stocks in the crisis of 2009. I see Chavez Jr. squeaking out a decision although I´d like to see Duddy win.

  • dayammm says:

Heh, another quality matchup from Arum and Top Rank.

  • God says:

Chavez jr blows, when is gonna start matching up with leet fighters? This kid is joke!
