Duddy defeats Medina, Gomez stops Castillo – Boxing results

By Eric Thomas: Middleweight contender John Duddy (29-1, 18 KOs) won an unimpressive 10 round split decision over Michael Medina (22-2-2, 17 KOs). The final judges’ scores were 96-93, 96-93 for Duddy, and 96-93 for Medina. Duddy, 30, was rocked at the end of the 7th round and was saved by the bell. Other than that, Medina lost a point for a low blow at the end of the 8th round. Duddy looked like he was slower than he normally and appears to have lost a step or two in the past couple of years. Next up for Duddy is likely a fight against Top Rank fighter Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. That should be an interesting spectacle.

Former contestant on the ‘Contender’ reality television program Alfonso Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KO’s) defeated former World Boxing Council lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo (60-10-1, 52 KOs) by a 5th round stoppage. Castillo didn’t come out for the 6th round. Gomez had his way with the 36-year-old Castillo, jabbing him in the face repeatedly and landing 1-2 combinations at will. Gomez backed Castillo with nice shots and found it easy to land. Castillo could barely raise his gloves to any punches by the end of the 5th. Castillo landed very few punches and just looked old and slow. It was sad to see Castillo, a former outstanding fighter, looking so bad against a non-champion.

Pacman demonstrated a vulgar display of power, Soto had an easy fight, Gomez fought the remains of a torn Castillo, Michael Medina got robbed, he overcame al obstacles starting by the big time weight disadvantage.

Not so bad of a show.

  • Crunchie says:

John Duddy is the next Dmitriy Salita. A series of dreadful performances against mediocre fighters. When he actually fights someone with a pulse he’ll be cruelly exposed. Hopefully by Matthew Macklin.

this duddy is bad he should give it up now over hyped name rings true dud i certainly would not pay to watch him

  • Finn says:

Duddy was lucky to get on the card of an event attended by over 40,000 fans plus PPV. However, as sometimes happens with Duddy, he screwed it up. He wasn’t sharp, lacked any power on his punches, and almost got knocked down in the seventh round. He was totally unimpressive. At 30, Duddy seems to have lost his old zip. He should fight Chavez Jr. for the big bucks at Yankee Stadium in June, and then consider retiring by the end of this year.

Watch upcoming welterweight, Saul Alvarez, 19 year old with a 30-0 record with 28 ko’s. This fighter has the punch. In a couple of years he’ll be the top contender.

  • miguel says:

Tonight’s fights were terrible. What a boring one sided Pacman vs Glottey fight. All the hype and Glottey did not want to fight. If I were the promotor I wouldn’t pay Glottey.
The rest of the fights were boring.

  • DON says:

DUDDY IS STILL REAL GOOD. HE MAY HAVE HAD AN OFF FIGHT IN THIS ONE. HE STILL HAS IT AND WILL PROVE THAT IN HIS NEXT FIGHT.

  • Tweezy316 says:

A poor undercard and a mismatch main event. I feel sorry for whoever bought this fight.

  • snidge says:

    Time to retire Mr Castillo.
