Dirrell: Abraham’s arms are too short, and he can’t box

By Scott Gilfoid: The talented Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) let his feelings known about his opponent for this Saturday night Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KO’s), saying this to the news site bild: Abraham has too short, he cannot box, and I’m going to give him his first defeat. The 20,000 fans at the Joe Louis Arena [in Detroit, Michigan] will be pushing me, my 30 family members who will be there, and to the millions of TV viewers while see me win.” I totally agree with you, Mr. Dirrell. This is what I’ve saying all along. Abraham’s arms are way too short to beat a tall fighter like Dirrell.

Abraham may be listed at 5’10”, which is four inches shorter than Dirrell, but he’s got some seriously short arms for his height. This is going to be a one-sided bombing attack from long range, and the short-armed Abraham won’t be able to do a thing about it. Abraham’s got these stubby little arms that seem to not really fit with his long torso. It looks kind of strange. Not only does Abraham have short arms, but he can’t box to save his life. Abraham is first and foremost a pure slugger.

That’s what he does and that’s all he does. He doesn’t box. I’ve seen most of Abraham’s fights and he’s all about covering up in his Clottey-like crab defense, taking a ton of shots in the first six rounds, and then basically going wild in his crude attacks in the 2nd half of the fight. He still never throws that many punches.

Abraham is always being very stingy with letting his hands go. I’d like to see him throw jabs, move around the ring and show some boxing skills, but thus far I’ve never seen that side from Abraham and I’m not expecting to see it on Saturday night when he fights Dirrell at the Joe Louis Arena. Believe me, it’ll be more of the same from Abraham. He’ll go after Dirrell with his primitive caveman attack, trying to steal rounds or take Dirrell out with one big shot.

That is going to a losing strategy on Abraham’s part. You got to show some skills to beat a talented fighter like Dirrell. Those crude types of attacks don’t work on him.

Dirrell says “I am lighting, dance like Muhammad Ali, and can change constantly my looks. I’m going to totally confuse Abraham.” You are so right, Andre. Dirrell fights like a young Ali, with hand speed that reminds me a lot of Roy Jones Jr. and Floyd Mayweather. Dirrell will move, adapt, change and have Abraham so confused it won’t even be funny.

The thing of it is Abraham is going into this fight seeming kind of cocky from his win over Jermain Taylor and all those victories over middleweight opponents in the past four years. But, I don’t see any of those fighters as being anywhere close to being as good as Dirrell. I see most of those guys that Abraham has beaten as purely B level fighters.

The only good fighters he beat were Taylor and Edison Miranda, and those guys weren’t exactly at their best when they met up with Abraham. The problem with Abraham is he’s not only too short, too slow but he’s also lacking in boxing skills. And when you throw in the fact that he’s going to be fighting in front of 20,000 Dirrell fans in Detroit, it spells defeat in a big way for Abraham.

I just hope the guy doesn’t start fouling. The last thing I want to see is Abraham losing his cool and picking Dirrell up like he’s some big time wrestler and body slamming him. The referee is going to have to be on his toes in this fight because when a fighter is getting dominated badly for the first time, they sometimes lose it. Once they get used to losing, they usually become more manageable.

  • cleveland says:

I dont know how anyone with two eyes can say dirrel didnt whup froch… I mean c’mon, watch the fight, andre landed twice as mutch and out classed froch big time. All you brits out there, belive me, I know, scott hates brit fighters and can be a bit biased at times, but common sence says says froch fought like a bum that night!

  • patpump says:

Why do some of these guys make such stupid statements, Did you see him make an ass of himself before the Froch fight……I’m not a Froch fan at all but I was hoping to see Dirrell get his mouth shut, I think Abraham will seal the deal…..How bout Alan Green he may have something for Dirrell too.

  • ERIC says:

DURREL LOSES BY WAY OF MOUTH. ALL HE DID BY RUNNING HIS MOUTH IS PUMP UP ABRAHAMS. I EXPECT HIM TO PUT MORE PRESSURE ON DURREL FROM THE START. MAKE HIM RUN LIKE A B*TCH AND TIRE HIM OUT.AND THEN KNOCK HIM OUT. AND AS ALWAYS GILFOID IS CONSISTENT. HE SUCKS AGAIN.

Speaking of the fight , not the authors obvious bias. Before the Direllvs Froch fight I thought Dirells better boxing skills by sticking and moving would earn him a decision without being knoocked out. I was Wrong. Frochs work rate, and grit was impressve and he came to fight. Dirrell didnt come to fight runing SO much he gave the fight away. Despite better boxing skills . Why the history lesson ? Yes Dirrel is a beter boxer and with Abrahams much lower punch numbers this SHOULD be an easy decision .But if he puls his track shoes out and does his road work in the ring instead of outside the ring . he will lose yet anouther decision . (Abraham wont knock him out Drrell could get a track and field scholarship lol)

  • NAZ says:

  • ashishwarrior says:

wow 3 michighan judges and the ref they trying to give it dirrell on a plate if he cant make it there he wont make it anywhere if he last 12 rounds he cant lose scott gifford you see the word IF there

  • Fighter says:

To be honest, I have’nt seen either guy fight, but based on the science, I would go with the taller guy with the reach, if he knows how to use it. If he negates his hight by making himself small, and or smothering his oponent, therefore negating his reach, he will put the shorter, harder puncher in the fight. And if he’s a scared fighter, then I’ll not care and change the channel. Guys like the new Roy JJ, or the same old Clottey, who refuse to engage, and just do what is necessary to survive, are just plain boring to watch.

  • John,e says:

Scott,If Dirrell losses given all the dross you’ve written, give us all a pledge that you will never write on here again because with your constant one sided articles on Dirrell have made your self look foolish.

  • Foley says:

Will this be available to watch in the UK does anyone know?

  • Alex says:

Dirrell is having all the tools to outbox and to win but if he’s scared again , he’s gonna lose again like the Froch fight .
Nobody is unbeatable on the super 6 . I can’t wait for this fight

  • AP says:

If Abraham can win on Direll’s turf than he definitely will move up very high on the P4P list. I will have him like top 8 if he wins this fight. I think Kelly Pavlik wanted no part of him at the MW division.

  • Guvo says:

The short arm thing is called thalidomide, but is not he to young for this affliction? King Arthur could have Neandathal genetics thus his strength? Dirrell may go the way of Miranda and Taylor.

  • matt w says:

abraham will smash him, if froch beats him id hate to think what abraham gnna do to him. say goodbay to another one of your lover scott u mug!!

  • dayyammmm says:

Dirrell could take it by decision but slip up just once and AA puts his lights out.

  • Anonymous says:

lol, abraham wins by brutal ko .

  • Got Skillvoid says:

I’m sorry but if you are some super hybrid of Ali, Jones Jr and Mayweather Jr you should be beating basic, predictable fighters like Carl Froch by a complete shutout not dropping close split decisions. Ridiculous comparisons really!

  • Vandal says:

Abraham does not have short arms for a man his height. These articles of yours just get worse and worse.

I really hope they sell the place out. It won’t happen. They aren’t even trying to sell the upper bowl yet. I will surprised if they have 8,000 seats sold.

Dirrell is not a draw. His inclusion in this event will in hindsight appear to be a mistake.

    Arthur wipes his ass out.
