Dirrell: “That man [Abraham] is dangerous”

By Scott Gilfoid: In the latest episode of Showtime’s Fight Camp 360, super middleweight Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) had a lot of praise for the power and skills of his March 27th opponent Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KO’s), saying “He [Abraham] lines you up so you can’t move and then brings that right straight down. It’s pretty, Man, and it’s fast. That’s why it’s harder than it looks to escape from, because he’s [Abraham] so explosive. That man is dangerous, period.” I hope Dirrell isn’t giving Abraham too much credit. The guy is good, but he’s not as good as Dirrell is making him out to be.

I think Dirrell is making the mistake of getting starry-eyed after watching Abraham’s fight with Jermain Taylor too many times. Let’s be real about this fight: Taylor fought the wrong way against a slow, plodder, and he only has himself to blame for getting knocked out in the 12th because he stood in front of the guy. That’s like standing in front of George Foreman and then wondering why he’s blasting you apart with uppercuts. You don’t stand in front of a slugger like Abraham, unless you have a great chin or a fatalistic wish to be knocked out.

Dirrell will be too smart for that. He’s going to use movement, his jab and his hand speed to keep the German based former middleweight champion tied in knots come March 27th, when they meet at the Joe Louis Arena, in Detroit, Michigan. That’s going to be hometown advantage for Dirrell, who lives only 68 miles away in Flint, Michigan. The arena, which holds 20,000 fans, will be filled with Dirrell fans and I think this is going to be a big problem for Abraham. He’s used to fighting in front of large German crowns in his home in Germany.

Abraham has fought only twice out of Germany during his seven year pro career. One of his fights occurred in Switzerland against Wayne Elcock. You might as well call that Germany as well, because Switzerland is right next door to Germany, so I don’t count that as being out of Germany. Abraham’s other fight out of Germany was against Edison Miranda when they fought in Florida in June 2008. That’s nothing. Abraham is going to be facing a really hostile audience in Detroit, because this is Dirrell’s home state. Miranda is Colombian and doesn’t come from Florida, so you can’t even count that as a home town advantage for Miranda in his fight with Abraham.

Along with his praise for Abraham, Dirrell has also spotted some noticeable flaws, saying “He [Abraham] takes breathers. That’s when you got to jump on him. He don’t want you to hit that body. When he thinks I’m done, I’m going to come back and boom!”

Dirrell is right. Abraham likes to cover and rest between his short flurries. He makes the mistake of dropping his guard as he prepares to attack. Abraham does this every time and it’s like he’s telegraphing what he’s about to do. A smart fighter like Dirrell will take advantage of that by drilling Abraham when shots when his high guard comes down.

    Hi,

Sure Abraham will beat Dirrel, no guestion about it! Who dare to say Abraham is not a good or dangerous fighter, take a look at the man’s record!!! No prove that he is not capable of winning all the other punks! Go Abraham!

  • Tony Y says:

Dirrell is just upping Abraham so he doesnt look as dumb after he loses to him

  • mrblack says:

scott who would win; andre durrell vs usane bolt? i predict durrell by a mile that boy sure is fast

  • neal says:

scotty boy is a dumb as, he says how bad abraham is so if his boy friend does pull a very lucky win then by his logic dirrel beat a guy who wasnt very good , and when he proberly looses he got beat be a guy who scotty doesnt have a clue foid doesnt even rate. I think dirrel is good but not at all ready for the level of boxers in the super 6

I saw the U-Tube with Dirrell seeming so impressed with AA’a knockout of Taylor. I was shocked to hear his response. I expected to hear him say something like “I would never get caught with a punch like that”. Whats going through his mind?

  • JD says:

Why do you work so hard to convince us you’re an idiot?

  • Dewi Powell says:

I think Dirrel knows more than you Scott. And Abraham is not a slugger at all you idiot, and especially not like Foreman. Abraham is a defensive fighter and covers up for more time than he throws.

“Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) had a lot of praise for the power and skills of his March 27th opponent Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KO’s)” – Glad someone has.

“The guy is good, but he’s not as good as Dirrell is making him out to be.” – Erm.. yes he is Scott.

“he only has himself to blame for getting knocked out in the 12th because he stood in front of the guy” – Taylor was losing on points anyway.

“When he thinks I’m done, I’m going to come back and boom!” – I see Dirrell has a plan for when he launches his famous hugging attack.

  • T-Dogg says:

dirrell is a smart fighter, and he will win easily. It’s always good to respect your apponent’s strengths, and not become complacent.

  • Sam says:

Think Dirrell can box rings round abraham, but he’s going to have to deal with Arthur’s power at some point.

  • LEE COOO says:

ITS NOT BEING STARRY EYED SCOTT, ITS SHOWING A QUALITY FIGHTER ALOT OF RESPECT. SOMETHING YOU WOULDNT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. YOU ARE PATHETIC CALLING ABRAHAM BASICALLY USELESS THE MAN IS A WORLD CHAMPION AND THAT DESERVES CREDIT WHICHEVER WAY YOU LOOK AT IT.

  • TONY says:

GO KING AA GO.WE LOVE YOU IN YOU WE TRUST.

  • ipressbuttons says:

Always did like Dirrell, love it when fighters show some respect! And @Vandal is this in the Joe Louis arena?! thats awesome!

  • Vandal says:

I would wager Joe Louis Arena will be half-full and 30% of the crowd will be pro-King Arthur. We will see. Unless Dirrell punks out again, I will be there.

  • graham says:

    Scott,

Here is the problem. Dirrell can do all the right things in the ring but once he gets hit that’s the end for him. It’s either Abraham finishes him off right away or Dirrell forgets his technique and gets beaten up badly.
I am not saying he has no chance, am just saying he will need to be focused for all 12 rounds.

  • OJayJuel says:

    Go Dirrell!

  • Joe Ko! says:

Dirrell is giving him the credit he deserves

Abraham out boxed Taylor by hardly doing anything

  • straightup says:

Another hard-on article from the author, I see. I love how he disregards facts, saying: “you might as well call that Germany as well, because Switzerland is right next door to Germany”. In that case, I choose to see this fight as taking place in Canada, because that’s right next door to the US. As for Dirrell fans filling a 20,000 seat arena; I doubt they could fill a VW camper van, let alone the Joe Louis Arena.
With regards to the ‘hometown advantage’, let’s hope that won’t mean Abraham is robbed like Dirrell was in Nottingham, eh? ;) I’m sure King Arthur won’t be too worried about fighting abroad because, unlike Dirrell, he has balls and is a genuine warrior.

As an aside; I’d like to see what this author would write if Dirrell lost by a devastating KO inside the first 3 rounds and admitted himself that he simply wasn’t good enough…

As it is, time will tell, and let the best man win. Hopefully my comment won’t be deleted this time, unlike several in the past.
