Calzaghe to help Kessler for Froch bout? – News

By William Mackay: According to Danish site dr.dk/sporten former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has offered to help Mikkel Kessler prepare for his April 24th Super Six bout against WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch. The report states that Calzaghe approached Kessler through his agent about helping him in the Froch bout. Kessler says “I’ve only just heard about it, but I’m honored if Calzaghe will help me. If he has something to offer with any trick or idea, of course I am more than happy to listen.”

Kessler, 31, was defeated in his last fight by American Andre Ward by an 11 round technical decision in his first stage 1 Super Six bout on November 21st. Because of the one-sided nature of that fight, many people are thinking that Froch will beat Kessler and possibly stop him when they meet next month on April 24th in Herning, Denmark.

However, Kessler has the much better boxing skills compared to Froch and has to be considered as having an excellent chance of beating Froch and capturing his WBC super middleweight title. Kessler will be fighting in front of his home crowd in Demark, which should give Kessler a big boost for this fight.

Calzaghe, 37, hasn’t fought since ending his career with a 12 round decision over Roy Jones Jr. in November 2008. There has been speculation by some that Calzaghe might be tempted to come out of retirement against the winner of the Super Six tournament. Calzaghe hasn’t said anything about wanting to come, however, and says he content with his career.

Calzaghe has no love for Froch, and would like nothing better than to see Kessler beat him and thus get a certain degree of satisfaction out of it happening. If Calzaghe can actually help Kessler make that happen, that would likely be even better.

agree completely with comment below, joe should either put up or shut up,,,if he ever came back, froch, pascal and dawson would not only beat him, they would destroy him..end of!!!!

  • Bruno says:

    46 FIGHTS 32 KO’S . NOT BAD FOR A SLAPPER.

  • jb says:

I agree, Calzaghe was a slapper. It’s not his fault he was in a weak division, but still he fought noone until Hopkins and Jones. Jones offered no resistance at all. I am not a Jones fan at all…but Calzaghe showed no class mocking Jones during that fight also when Jones was so badly beaten.

  • ashishwarrior says:

you all bang on about calslappy but he couldnt put old man jones with cut to death eye partial eye sight away danny green blasted him out in one come on

  • dayyammmm says:

Joe’s gonna teach Mikkel how to do his happy slap routine.

No longer the old Viking warrior, but the new, improved, Viking Slapper.

    Watch out Froch!

When Mikkel asks you in the ring, “What did the hand say to the face??!!” — SLAP!! SLAPP!!! SLAPP SLAPP SLAPP!!

  • patpump says:

Calzaghe was a great fighter and ducked on one, people that for some reason don’t like him, try to diminish his wins over other good fighters, he beat Roy Jones like he stole something from him, Hopkins tried to hold on to him the whole fight and when he was getting ready to be KOd he faked a low blow…….Joe is smart he retired unbeaten from a rough division…give him his due……he deserves alot of praise.

  • jb says:

Mr. sweet…..it actually doesn’t make me happy……I don’t like Dawson. I just think he’s better than Calzaghe.

  • jb says:

Dawson is 27. He still has another 10 years to outdo Calzaghe if he hasn’t already.

  • jb says:

I am not a Dawson fan…but really he has already fought competition comparable to Calzaghe and he is still very young. Calzaghe gained more interenational fame at a late age and in his last two fights. Dawson will one day be exposed I am sure of that. But at his peak he is better than Calzaghe.

  • jb says:

I agree with you, Dawson will not remain undefeated very long. I don’t believe retiring undefeated though makes you an all-time great. All the greats have losses. In some cases like Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Robinson they have many losses. But they fought the best fighters. They have a few great wins, a few great losses, but they fought the best fighters.

  • jb says:

I’m sure you do know that Lacy has a bad shoulder that he never has and never will recover from.

  • Bruno says:

Despite what u say, joe WILL go down as an all time Undefeated champion, Dawson will not!!!! Lacy had a shoulder injury u say? Rubbish. he just got shown for B list.

  • Bruno says:

he retired because the time was right not becasue he was scared. Collins retired because he knew he was going to take a beating

  • jb says:

I might have to rethink this….Calzaghe beat Chris Eubank and Jeff Lacy! I do believe he is an all-time great after all.

  • jb says:

Lacy was ruined by a shoulder injury….not Calzaghe.

  • jb says:

Ray Leonard is great….but he is not God…….what he says is not Gospel.

  • jb says:

So Steve Collins is a coward for retiring instead of fighting Calzaghe…but Joe could retire without fighting Dawson?….

  • Bruno says:

By they way u also forgot that calzaghe ruined jeff lacy, beat chris eubank and Steve collins retired rather than fight calzaghe

  • Bruno says:

i didnt just make it up fella. Its documented. Just ask the sugar man. He even mentions it in his autobiography.

  • Bruno says:

    No way!!! calzaghe without problem

  • jb says:

Would you tell your friends or the casual sports fan that Calzaghe is in the same conversation as Joe Louis being an all-time great? They would not even know who you’re talking about. No one knows Calzaghe. I don’t think he made much of an impression to anyone except die hard boxing fans.

  • jb says:

Even if I thought Calzaghe was good….calling him an all-time great is ridiculous. That kinda talk is reserved for Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson etc.

  • jb says:

I don’t care for either one. Dawson would win though hands down.

  • Bruno says:

@JB cmon dude, be serious. do u really think he is better than calzaghe? even Sugar ray leaonard calls calzaghe an all time great. Lets do this properly lets ask everyone to post who is better, CALZAGHE OR DAWSON? what u rekon guys?

  • Bruno says:

    apologies patpump.

  • jb says:

Bruno fyi….Calzaghe fought Hopkins, Jones, and Kessler. Dawson fought Glen Johnson twice, Tarver twice, and Adamek. Seems to me he fought pretty good fighters. Of course Tarver and Johnson knocked out Jones which Calzaghe could not do even though Calzaghe fought Jones later.

  • jb says:

I have a hard time believing anyone avoided Calzaghe.

  • jb says:

Pete said Calzaghe cleaned out two divisions…not me….talk to him. I don’t think he cleaned anything. And yes Chad Dawson would beat Calzaghe…and no I am not a Dawson fan.

  • jb says:

You’re right Calzaghe beat Will McIntyre….an elite fighter……Calzaghe never made the effort to come to America to get much bigger fights….simple as that…….Hopkins took a fight with Tarver even though it wasn’t his weight class…….Calzaghe stayed at Super Middleweight because it was dead. There were other fighters to be taken in the weight classes around him. He had no interest.

  • Bernard says:

Irrispective of if joe assists kessler, its frochs fight for me

  • oscar says:

calzaghe should not get involved unless he plans to come back all his doing is making froch name bigger

  • patpump says:

    @Pete…..I think your right.

  • Pete says:

    jp –

Calzaghe cleaned up the super middleweight division… not the light heavyweight one. Are you following us now? He was a super middleweight. Fighters avoided that division because of Calzaghe, Hopkins skipped that division entirely and Calzaghe had to move up to face him.

So do we have that clear now? Dawson was a no-one and like Froch tried to make a name for themselves by calling out Calzaghe. The guy had proven enough, his hands where fragile, he was 37, was unbeaten and fought dangerous guys throughout his career.

And for the record RJJ had moved out of the super middleweight division by the time Calzaghe was champion in 1997 – and Jones kept on moving up.

  • patpump says:

Hey Bruno….Did you read my posts, I’m a “Yank”….I said he was an all time great, then you write something like that…..come on Dude

  • Bruno says:

@ jb. FYI. Calzaghe wanted to fight jones and hopkins earlier in him career and the both declined. Chad dawson? give me a break, please. Who has he fought worth writing about? Calzaghe would have destroyed him. Why cant the yanks accept that he will go down as an all time great.

  • z says:

say what you want about jones being washed up thats tough to argue, but hopkins has proven that he still has something left in the tank and beating kessler in his prime was a very impressive W, as was lacy at the time.

  • patpump says:

@UK BRAWLER……He is supporting his fellow fighter, I think he respects Kessler, do you think he needs to support Froch because they are from the UK…….

  • kingalex says:

jb, Calzaghe foght Hopkins, who is an elite fighter even at this point of his career(but obviously not a prime Hopkins, so I understand whta you are saying). I totally disagree with your point on the passiveness, because that’s the way both RJJ and B-HOP fight(at this point of their careers). But being down against both of them shows me that he can’t win against either one of them in his prime. I think B-HOP lost 114-113 on my card, but he fought great and yes Joe took it because of his poor performance against Wright 9 mos. before the fight. And the “Old Hopkins” almost earn a victory.

  • patpump says:

I think while Joe was getting world wide attention and actually considered one of the best fighters in boxing by many including me, Froch was calling him out and downplaying Jo’s accomplishments. I heard Carl say that Joe had to beat him to be on top, that’s just crazy, Joe had bigger fish to fry instead of Froch. Froch is good, but he thinks he is much more than he really is

  • Anonymous says:

    jb

do you honestly think chad would cause joe anyproblems ???

    bhop would school chad

  • UK brawler says:

Im pretty disgusted to read Calzaghe would give tips to an opponent of Froch’s just out of sour grapes and a cheap way of trying to get one up, why doesn’t he move on with his life instead of continuing old rivalry’s? He should be supporting fellow fighters not trying to stitch them up. I know those guys dont like each other and alot has been said by both of them but he just lot my respect. That is weak.

  • jb says:

Calzaghe beat Hopkins, Jones, and Kessler. That is not my idea of cleaning out two divisions. That’s only three fighters.

  • patpump says:

I think Joe is way too quick for Froch, I never understood the fewd. I think it comes from Froch’s jealousy of Joe. Maybe it’s a UK thing that I don’t understand but from over here it seems like Froch who is a good fighter with a good future, really has a wierdness about him that causes friction with other people..

  • jb says:

How do you clean out a division when the best fighter is still in it? Chad Dawson.

  • jb says:

Calzaghe did what most UK fighters do..they stay in the Uk where they have home crowds, home judges…they know outsiders have a hard time dealing with the environment and time change.

  • jb says:

No need to talk at me for one thing…I am a huge Hopkins fan and I believe he earned the decision against Calzaghe. But Calzaghe took that fight and Jones because he felt it wasn’t risky. And yes he retired before he had to face Chad Dawson. Also he could’ve come to America earlier like he said he would to face Hopkins and Jones when they were younger, and Glen Johnson or Antonio Tarver. I like Jeff Lacy, but he is not elite. Calzaghe saw Chad Dawson on the horizon and did not want any part of it.

  • La costra nostra says:

Calazage is a lame if hates Froch that much why doesn’t he just come out of retirement and fight Froch instead of being a heckler if he trains hard he may have at least one fight left in him it’s not as though he’s in really bad shape or anything

  • fozz says:

knock froch out and do his misses and we’ll all be happy.Oh yeah and lets go dancin with jo. boxing rules ufc sucks.

  • John,e says:

joe need to keep his nose and big mouth shut or come back and fight the Froch and Dawson etc given joe think he such a legend him self.

  • nazobryant says:

cant believe what i am reading here joe calzaghe would take carl froch apart! froch would just follow him around the ring trying to punch him and calzaghe would make him pay! look how 1 sided the froch taylor fight was, look how he scraped a split decision over direll froch will loose his title in his next fight and will never win another one ever again!

  • jb says:

Calzaghe never fought an elite opponent. Spent seven years talking about coming to America to fight the best and then showed up twice to fight the two most faded old fighters he could find. I wouldn’t call beating up what was left of Roy Jones “going out on top”. And btw, he was knocked down by both of the old men. If they weren’t so passive they could’ve ko’d him early.

  • j lander says:

i hope joe does come back and froch can finally shut the bum up

  • jb says:

I would like to see Calzaghe come back so we can finally see him lose.

  • nazobryant says:

are you insane! froch has no boxing skills kessler will take him to school!

  • John,e says:

Joe you need to keep your nose out of it and your big mouth shut,if you won’t a a part of the action come out of your retirement and fight Dawson and Froch etc as you keep saying they are so easy!!!!!!!wouldn’t it been pinching money.

  • ashishwarrior says:

calzaghe has not even fought froch so what can he help him with or is calzaghe going to change him as a fighteri think not not at 31 anyway joe is hoping kessler will beat him because he aint man enough to step in the ring with froch

  • dippo says:

    stole off livefight.com

  • Willie Stroker says:

As much as I don’t like Froch because I am a HUGE Calzaghe fan, I would still like to see Froch win the Super Six (Long shot I know) because he is British and I want to see us win this fuing thing.

But I don’t think Calzaghe is doing the right thing by helping Kessler out, and is just adding fuel to the fire.

Maybe he’s just trying to promote a fight between him and Froch.

  • Mark Arnold says:

Froch would stop Joe calaaaaagibvbbiubugy any day, so why is he helping a foreigner beat a British guy

  • Guvnor says:

No point in JC helping out, Kessler will be KTFO for the first time!!

  • Pete says:

Calzaghe cannot help Kessler as Kessler is going to lose in a very tough, hard fought battle.

Calzaghe will not come back because he has no need to.

Froch to win by late stoppage, Kessler just won’t be able to handle him for 12 rounds.

  • Paul Mason says:

Go for it joe, but if Froch does beat Kessler, we may see a come back!!
