Arum says Pacquiao-Clottey will sell as many PPV buys as Pacquiao-Cotto

By Esteban Garduno: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he thinks that this Saturday’s fight between World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Joshua Clottey will do as well as the Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto bought in terms of pay per view buys, according to an interview of Arum at Boxing Talk. The Pacquiao-Cotto fight sold 1.25 million pay per view buys, which a good portion of it was driven by fan interest in seeing Cotto fight. Arum says that at the least, he sees the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight doing no worse than 900,000 to 1 million PPV buys.

This is obviously very wishful numbers for a fight that matches Pacquiao, a big star going up against a little known fighter like Clottey. Below, I’ve listed Pacquiao’s biggest fights of his career and shown what his pay per view buys were for each of the fights. You can be the judge of how you think Pacquiao will do against Clottey.

Pacquiao vs. Oscar De La Hoya – 1.25 million PPV buys
Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto = 1.25 million PPV buys
Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton = 830,000 PPV buys
Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez = 400,000 PPV buys
Pacquiao vs. David Diaz = 250,000 PPV buys

***

In contrast, here is Floyd Mayweather’s best pay per view numbers:

Mayweather vs. De La Hoya = 2.4 million PPV buys
Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez = 1.05 million PPV buys
Mayweather vs. Ricky Hatton = 850,000 PPV buys

As you can see, it’s asking a lot of Pacquiao and Clottey to bring in the kinds of numbers that the Pacquiao-Cotto brought in. The reason is Clottey is probably a lot less well known than Hatton and Marquez in the United States. Clottey is probably as about well known to the casual boxing fan as David Diaz is. I still think the Pacquiao-Clottey fight will do better than Pacquiao’s fights against Diaz and Marquez simply because Pacquiao is better known to the boxing public because of his fights against De La Hoya, Cotto, Marquez and Hatton in the past two years.

Pacquiao will draw well in spite of the fact that he’s facing pretty much a nobody on March 13th . However, I think Arum is deluded if he thinks that a fight between Pacquiao and Clottey is going to bring in the same numbers as Pacquiao’s bout against the much better known Cotto.

That’s ridiculous to even consider. Unlike the Pacquiao-Cotto fight, there isn’t going to be an HBO 24/7 Pacquiao-Clottey series. Instead, there was one special, “Road to Dallas”, which showed once on HBO, and had none of the interesting inside information that the usual 24/7 series typically have. Additionally, there appears to be little marketing of the fight by Arum and Top Rank. I’m still not seeing commercial advertisements for the fight even though it’s less than a week away.

Without the fight being marketed to boxing fans that have no idea who Clottey is there’s no way that the Pacquiao-Clottey fight will do as well as Pacquiao’s bouts against Cotto and De La Hoya. That sounds like wishful thinking to me. If anything, I think it might fall into the 800,000 PPV neighborhood. It could reach a million PPV if enough new fans of Pacquiao want to see him fight and don’t care who he fights against. But they have to know about the fight, and with almost zero commercials being played on Cable to alert fans about this fight, I can’t see how they would even know about the fight.

to tre hes talking about he making 40mil after ppv sales…he has to be making that if Mosley is gettng a guarantee 20mil which he went on record to say and you know they didnt do a 50/50 split so if he getting 20 floyd has to be getting 30…and after ppv sales and all the other gate sales he going to be getting atleast 40mil unless the ppv sales bad which i doubt …and yea floyd wasnt the biggest draw in the sport but with him combine with the biggest one broke records so he did bring in a lot of fans had to otherwise it wouldnt have broke records …but just say he did 2mil or got lucky and broke the record he would be the biggest draw in the this fight and he could argue if he did 2mil this fight and he fight pac and they do over 3mil he the biggest draw in the fight since his ppv high numbers are more consistent then pacs …but people lie numbers dont so on may 1st we will see what happens

  • Tre' says:

    BRI,

These numbers your throwing out there are what u heard Mayweather state at his first press conference with Mosley. Your’re making it seem like u read the actual contract. We know Floyd likes to over exagerrate a little with his numbers. We all know Dela Hoya was the big draw when Floyd fought him. Dela Hoya made over $50, Floyd made $25! Floyd & Marquez drew 1 million buys but Marquez was very well known. If Mayweather was a huge draw, he would have drew well over 1 million buys against Marquez. You can’t compare Mosley/Mayweather buys to Pacquiao/Clottey because Mosley is a house way more house hold nmae than Clottey. No Comparison!!! Mosley/Mayweather should out sell Pac/Clottey. If Mosley/Mayweather sells 2 million PPV buys, it won’t all be because of Floyd.

  • BRI says:

for those who think ppv dont matter they do . it gives you leverage of purse split witch could mean millions of dollers. thats why pacman made 12 mill on fight night and floyd is making 40 million dollers. pacman does bad of ppv even if he agrees to blood testing floyd is not gona give him a 50/50 split as he shouldnt since he is the bigger draw. the numbers say so. and please dont say its because mosley is a big name. most of mosleys recent fights have been on h.b.o not ppv. he was suppose to make 1.5 million for the berto match. now he is making 20 million for the floyd match. and for the record pacman will never fight floyd or mosley. both would destroy him. that man has no defense i wonder about clottey. didnt abrum have his offices raided by the f.b.i trying to find evidance of fixing fights.

  • thanos1966 says:

who cares about ppv buys, only kfc cares, thats how he makes his money.manny brings all his friends to see him fight over a hundred people, kfc goes around showing how much money he is got and give away fake money.kfc boring, manny exiting. wanna make a statement to kfc don’t buy his fights after all he fights not to lose(boring), manny fights to win (exiting)
show him where it hurts, his wallet

  • Killa says:

    @Smoovone

You’re right I saw that episode when he said that he needed to be the bad guy for that fight. People say Floyd is bad for boxing, but if it wasn’t for Floyd playing the role of bad guy the sport would be boring. Mayweather vs DeLa Hoya did 2 million ppvs because of Floyd playing the bad guy, and his idea for the 24/7 series. The 24/7 series has helped sell ppv’s for alot of fights since it was started including Pacquiao v Hatton, and Pacquiao vs Cotto, and Pacquiao vs Dela Hoya fight, yet Mayweather jr is bad for boxing? If this man didn’t come back their would be no potential super fight to talk about. The man brings publicity to the sport how can you hate that?

  • Killa says:

Yeah, we understand that if the Phillipines had paper view manny would do higher numbers, but they don’t. I don’t think Floyd’s numbers have anything to do with the fact that he’s an American, I mean look at Shane’s numbers and he’s an American too. Floyd has just always been good at promoting him self. I think Manny would do higher numbers if he wasn’t being promoted by Bob Arum.

  • perry says:

Mayweather will always surpass Pacquiao in terms of PPV.
Fights are held in the US.
    Mayweather is US citizen.
What if we change the location?

  • gard says:

We will be surprise how much PPV units Pacquiao can sell.

  • BBull says:

Guys please remember that if there was PPV in Mannys home country he will do 2million there alone but they dont have PPV

  • lex_fugitive says:

Actually Mayweather-Hatton got closer to 910,000 PPV buys in the US and over a million UK buys (also over double the UK buys for Pacquiao-Hatton). Mayweather will again get more PPVs than anything Pacquiao has ever done. Roach even used the excuse Mosley isn’t a big enough draw and thats why Pacquiao fought a shot Cotto. So, according to Roach Cotto was a bigger draw than Mosley, and if Manny is a bigger draw than Mayweather, May 1 should be lucky to get 1 million PPV buys. But everyone knows that May 1 will have tens of thousands more PPV buys, if not a million or more, than ANY FIGHT PACQUIAO HAS EVER BEEN IN. I know Pacfans love to insist Pacquiao is the bigger draw, but the numbers and people who purchase PPV boxing matches definitely disagree with that.

    Smoovone,

He amped it up for the ODLH fight true, but you can see his old interviews like before he fought Gatti, he was running his mouth all day. As far as showmanship this guy wore mexicutioner outfits before his brawls w/Latino fighters too. Overall he’s a lot of show outside the ring. I agree though, he did purposely amp it up for ODLH.

    LuvBoxing,

When I say a loss, I mean against a true contender, for both fighters. If any of them lost to a lower ranking fighter they’d both have ruined reputations. For example if Pac lost to Mosley vs. Floyd losing to Mosley, I think it would hurt Floyd a lot more.

  • LuvBoxing says:

    wowza,
We will just agree to disagree about that. I still think that PBF is still a bigger draw than pac man, period. However, I do agree a loss would hurt his bank-ability a lot, however, I think it hurts Pac Man more.
You really think if Pac Man loses to Clottey then he will bring the same following into his next fight? Virtually all of the luster would be off of him. The only loss that either could take and not lose a lot of bank would be a close loss to the other and everyone calling for a rematch.

  • SmoovOne says:

Wozabean: I gotta correct you. Mayweather’s bad guy image was created during the leadup to the ODLH fight. Prior to that he didn’t trash talk on the level he is now.

At that time, Mayweather made a calculated decision to become the bad guy, (showed it in his creation “24/7″) believing that two good guys could NOT draw as many PPV numbers as 1 bad guy and 1 good guy.

If you look at his fights prior to that time, he wasn’t as bad as he is now.

    luvboxing,

Well Mayweather is an entertainer . . . outside the ring. When your fights aren’t exciting you have to find a way to fill that hole and he does a good job w/his personality. Love him or hate him, for most it’s the latter, the guy is fun to watch on 24/7. Nazim said it best, if you can entertain and put on a good fight IN the ring, there’s no need for bells and whistles outside of it. He created this megalomaniac persona, who knows he really may be that delusional, but Pacquiao still garnered his own following because of what he does IN the ring. Pacquiao wasn’t as well known as Mayweather till AFTER the ODLH fight, while Mayweather established himself as a trash talker long before.

Now that both personalities are set, you can really see who the bigger draw is. If Mayweather looses that goose egg there will no doubt be an exponential drop off in his buys, whereas in Pacquiao the hit would be minimal at best. You pay for Pacquiao to entertain you, Mayweather entertains you for free, if you exclude paying for HBO. Just saying, my opinion.

  • SmoovOne says:

Pacquiao-Clottey should consider it a victory to get 600,000 buys. 650,000 max.

  • LuvBoxing says:

    @Judge Judy

So why was the Mayweather fight the biggest of Oscars career BY A LONG SHOT? Yes, DLH was the cash cow and IMHO will always be the biggest draw in boxing, but there is a reason that the Mayweather fight was his biggest fight of DLH’s career and the biggest in boxing history.

Furthermore, if DLH was the only reason the Mayweather fight drew 2.4 million buys, then why only 1.25 against Pac Man? Did DLH just drop off that much?

Another thing that Mayweather needs to get credit for is 24/7. Mayweather MADE that series and he is STILL the driving force behind it.

  • Judge Judy says:

ODLH vs Mayweather Jr had more PPV sales because of Oscar De la Hoya, his Hispanic and Latinos boxing funs NOT because of PBF, duh:P Only colored people will watch PBF. lol

  • MoneyPack says:

    @LuvBoxing
Your opinion doesn’t matter but then again who really gives,
I know exactly which non-stop, action-packed fight to pay.

  • wowzabean says:

    More PPV sales Mayweather/Mosley.

    Better match up Mayweather/Mosley.

    More exciting fight Pacquiao/Clottey.

Two big names will sell more, plus they have more time to market the fight. That’s a no brainer. How much more is the question. Mayweather has to blow Pacquiao out of the water. To whoever said this fight does 400-600k, you’re just a hater. Pacquiao’s popularity is sky high right now. 800k-1.1 mill, easy.

  • LuvBoxing says:

    @Anders

The writer DID mention the Hatton numbers with both fighters and Mayweather STILL sold more PPV’s than Pac.

The DLH fight wasn’t even close. Mayweather is a better draw than Pac on pPV, simple as that. He knows how to market a fight and he gets paid for it.

    @ MoneyPack

You honestly think that Pac/Clottey is going to outsell Mayweather/Mosley in PPV buys? I will lay any bet you want against that. Mayweather/Mosley will double or triple the Pac/Clottey fight numbers, simple as that.

Furthermore, we will have to see what the actual gate numbers are in Dalls before we know if Mayweather/Mosley will out gate them. Remember that the Pac/Clottey fight has a lot of cheap tickets available and Jerry Jones bought $30k worth of them. If they do not sell then Arum has to repay Jones for those tickets, so we have no idea how big this gate is actually going to be.

The Mayweather/Mosley fight gate will be easier because we know the real numbers up front and it is just a matter if it sells out, which it will.

That being said, it is not fair to Pac to compare his fight against Clottey to Mayweather v Mosley because the latter is a MEGA FIGHT and the former is just another fight. Kinda like Pacman trying to claim superiority over selling 1.25 million against Cotto to Floyds 1.05 million against JMM. They were not comparable because one was a mega fight and the other was expected to do about 500,000.

  • boxingsense says:

Why should it bother us whether it breaks one miilion PPVs or not?

You watch the fight because you want to watch the fight. I’d rather watch a fight that is not based on PPV attraction but on match-up of abilities, which is what the sport should be all about.

  • zoomX says:

    “NEWS FLASH”
watch manny’s orthodox stance in youtube, DAMN! this guy is getting better and better. Theres no way a “washed up” mayweather will fight him now, even if you offer him $50m. I hope moseley win so we can have a mega fight later this year.

  • Anders says:

How many of the ppv buyers that want to see mayweather fights buy the it to see him get knocked out? must be like 50%.

  • The Rock says:

The fight with Pacquiao vs Clottey will be respectable but The Rock thinks Floyd vs Shane will get a slight edge. The venue of the fight will help sell part of the fight, because it will be part of history because this will be Cowboy’s stadium first fight. Also people want to see action, just like The Rock and we know Manny will deliver and so will Clottey. Unlike Floyd if here were to fight in Cowboys stadium, Floyd will go up against Shane and when Shane is tagging him, Floyd will not only run around the ring but will make Shane run after him around the whole stadium. The Rock and everyone else wants action and Manny’s fight is action packed.

  • Solini says:

    @ Anders…
The expression men lie, women lie, numbers don’t only tells one side of the story. If you want to compare then do Mayweather’s PPV buys against Marquez 1.05 million in a global recession to Pacquaio-Marquez 400k in healthy economic times… I’ll steal a page from Fighter…. CRICKETS!!! lol

  • gary says:

hey, arum’s just wishful thinking; wouldn’t you be if you were in his shoes?

  • Anders says:

Colin you compare the numbers when they fought oscar but you forgot to mention Hatton. I guess i can understand the reason for that,it proves mayweather dont draw more than pacman.
And when pacman met Hatton it was also a financial crisis.

  • Free one says:

Maybe PAC/clottey can out ppv Floyd/Shane fight.. But wich one is a better fight tho??… As we all know PAC evry fight that he’s on it.. Is always a show.. But Floyd fighting a legit n top ww.. This is gonna b interesting… I’ll goo PAC/clottey on ppv sales.. But showdown.. Dang! Is money mayweather againts sugar Shane.. What else Can we ask for.. (ofcorz as consulation prize on PAC/Floyd).. Def. I’ll watch both fights

  • Solini says:

    @ Fighter…
something we can finally agree on Freddie Roach is becoming annoying. As for Bob Arum, I was already a Mayweather fan but this made me like him even more to know that he went against the grain and left Top Rank and still made it to the top out grossing anyone else in the sport. Say what you will about Mayweather but give credit where credit is due if he would’ve lost any of those fights after he left Top Rank he would’ve been seriously screwed, but of course we all know he didn’t. For those that say Mayweather is arrogant and obnoxious look at when he started to show his ass. Before the DLH fight he talked trash but no more than anyone else. Going into the 24/7 is when he really put the show on. DLH had the clean guy image and in a violent sport casual fans don’t want to see two people be nice to one another (also why the PAcquaio fight will suffer there’s no bad guy) they want the entertainment that these guys are going to try and will one another. And Floyd went on the promo tour as anti-DLH, he wore street clothes while DLH was in suits, anyhting DLH did, Mayweather did the opposite just to amp up the fight and looking at the PPV buys it worked. And since then he’s made himself the bad guy, this marketing strategy is working for him so why stop now.

  • Fighter says:

This fight is going to equal the excriment of Mosley/Mayweather.

  • Fighter says:

Bob Arum is bad for this sport. I say we all make a citizens arest or something. Get this dude outta here. He’s completely lost it. Freddy too. First, Freddy says that Clottey is gonna be a harder fight than Cotto (an obvious promotional gimmick), then he’s saying Clottey will be ko’ed in 6 rounds. Anybody see a pattern here? Impeach this guy. The early affects of alzheimer’s is setting in.

  • Solini says:

Bob Arum is delusional this fight isn’t even being talked about in barbershops and local sports bars. Fact is as good as Clottey is, he has no fan base. Cotto has a much bigger fan base which helped with the total of PPV buys, I see this fight at 400-600k and thats pushing it. Unless people get sucked into wanting to see a fight at Cowboys staduim I think most will settle to see it re-aired the following week, this isn’t one of those I must see fight where people think they guy fighting might possibly lose. Roach should do the fight a favor and amp Clottey up as Pacquaio’s biggest challenge to raise questions, instead of brushing Clottey off as something that isn’t worth tuning in for.

  • lacem up says:

mayweather has always been and always will be more popular than pacman..but bob arum will again want most things to be in top ranks favor..then again he will say mayweather dont want the fight !! wake up people

  • Colin says:

Question? If ODLH/Mayweather did 2.4M and it was all Oscar, why did ODLH/Pac do 1.25M? Was that all Oscar?

  • August says:

    Boxer101,

“Why start with dela hoya? What were the PPV numbers for Mayweather vs Gatti? Mayweather vs Judah? Mayweather vs Castillo?”

Why no numbers for these because FMJ was not a PPV draw that time (he’s nobody)

I will buy PPV for Pacquiao.

  • sean says:

i have already ordered my ppv and the whole family are going to watch and enjoy the fight..that’s for sure!

  • MarathonMan1 says:

After Shane and Floyd fight, Floyd wins, Manny and Arum will have no leverage. No drug test, no 65, 35 split, no fight. Floyd has already won that fight. Arum has to bow down to Floyd and he hates it. Arum hasn’t even put any advertising in this fight. He gets all the money and doesn’t have to throw any punches. He’s going to ride the Manny train until the wheels fall off. That’s a real stand up guy? Bob Arum.. Don King was through with it before Arum knew what to do with it.

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

Whatever! Arum wins!!! But I’m watching this fight for free.

  • wowzabean says:

Those figures show just how large a draw Manny is and how much of Floyd calling himself the biggest “draw” in boxing is completely misleading. ODLH made Floyd “money” Mayweather, enough said, he did the same for Manny too. This fight can do 1 million, I see it happening. Not only that PPVs released only show domestic sales, world wide, no problem.

  • golden boxer says:

    more like 450k then 1.25million

  • Mayfeather says:

Right. This old Arum relies on Pacquiao’s image.

He spend little on advertisement and even don’t spend for HBO 24/7. If it exceeds 1.0M buys, that’s pushing the luck.

One thing is sure, there won’t be a Pac-Mayweather in the future because Mayweather will demand a share of at least 60% once he can prove he sells more in his fight with Mosely.

No Pac-Mayweather fight is a damn fault of grumpy old man – ARUM.

  • Slimmm says:

No one care about this fight ‘Floyd Mayweather P4P King’

  • boxer 101 says:

Why start with dela hoya? What were the PPV numbers for Mayweather vs Gatti? Mayweather vs Judah? Mayweather vs Castillo?
