Arum expects a sellout for Pacquiao vs. Clottey

By Eric Thomas: As of the last count, there have been a total of 41,000 tickets sold for the March 13th fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum expects another 4000 tickets to be sold by the end of the week, which would bring the ticket numbers to 45,000, a sellout for the 80,000 seat stadium. The stadium seats can be reconfigured to fit any number up to the total seats available.

Arum had the stadium retrofitted to 45,000, so technically the fight will still be sellout, even though the stadium will be a little more than half full by fight time. This could be the start of future boxing events being held in the stadium just as long as the stadium owner Jerry Jones is willing to go along with the program. This would be an ideal location for a potential future fight between Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao if the fight can be put together.

ESPN is reporting that Kelly Pavlik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could be potential headliners in the Dallas Cowboy Stadium in the future. It will interesting to see what kind of numbers those two fighters bring into to the stadium, because I wasn’t aware that they were such huge stars in the U.S.

You’re probably right about the number being hyped up, either way Jones has to buy up the tickets anyways from lack of sales we just don’t know how many for sure.

  • Colin says:

    Neo,

40K sold according to who, Arum?? If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. I remember the hype about 20K tickets selling the first day they were available–you think that was true?? And they’ve only sold another 20K since Jan 23rd??

  • Neo says:

I understand you guys are Pacquiao fan’s but alot of the 40,000 tickets that have been sold were bought by Jones, and given away cause they are struggling to sell them. The stadium will be half empty come fight night. The ppv numbers will end up being embarrasing, infact Shane Mosley will make more from his purse split with Mayweather than Pacquiao will make, and that’s before Bob Arum takes his 25%, and golden boy takes their percent. It’s not Pacquiao’s fault Bob Arum is just not a good promoter. This is the same guy who didn’t want Mayweather to fight Dela Hoya, because he thought he wasn’t going to be getting paid enough money. The fight turned out to be the biggest boxing ppv in history.

    I don’t know if it will be a sellout but I certainly hope so becouse I think MANNY PAQUIAO deserves it {assuming he is clean of PED’s) he is an example to all of us for his humlility and for all the many great fights he has given us over the years where he has shown the heart of a champion on many occasions, in his wars with those great mexican warriors {Barrera,Morrales and Marquez} which are up there with the best fights I have seen. I had the pleasure of being in Vegas for one of his fights against Hatton {being from the UK I have just about forgiven him for that one!!}

    GOOD LUCK MANNY!!

  • bnb says:

What’s the gate money for those 41,000 tickets sold. These are $25 dollar tickets we are talking about. They should have sold out 100,000 of those…lol..

  • preston says:

and are you referring to me when you say, “the biggest hater on the blog”????? When have we ever engaged in a conversation on the blogs????? Apparently, you may have read some of my comments, and instead of having ANYTHING of substance to say, or at least address anything that I have said directly, you resorted to talking about anothers mans “nuts” and being “butt” hurt, and I have ZERO idea if what you are talking about, but like i said, anothers man’s nuts being warm on your face, and being butt hurt are obviously two things that you know a lot about.

    @simon

I believe we haven’t passed the trillion mark yet. Matter of fact we are 993 Billion short. :)

  • boxingfan#1 says:

41,000 tickets sold to a fight in the usa is Big number period it.

  • Simon says:

If you want pure entertainement, this is the fight to watch. On the otherhand, if you want to have a good nap, watch the fight in May 1st. Here are the characters of that fight: The “Dancer” vs. “Grandpa”. I bet “Grandpa” will whip the “Dancer’s” ass.

  • Simon says:

Don’t you know that of the world’s 6.9 trillion population, 74% are from the Continents of Asia and Africa. How much do you think is 1% of 6.9 Trillion? or even 1/10 of 1%. Wow, that’s unimaginable number. Let’s show the world we support our own! PACMAN VS CLOTTEY-GO FOR 3MILLION PPV.

  • dayyammmm says:

heh, i still don’t get the hoopla, 40,000 in a stadium designed to fit 80,000, even 100,000.

That’s exactly what the critics predicted: watching a boxing match in a half-empty stadium.

There’s going to be as many empty seats as there are people, lol.

  • fightfan10 says:

pacquiao should fire arum as his promoter. How can he honestly call this fight a sellout when the stadium holds around 100 thousand people and its struggling to sell 40 thousand? And thousands of those have been bought by themselves to give away? Not only that the tickets are a lot cheaper than they would be in Las Vegas? I think pacquiao is too much of a respectable person to have a snake like arum promoting him. I blame arum more than floyd or manny for that fight not happening.

  • Free one says:

Damn it… I already use mah vacation last decmber… N mah boss ddnt let me use anotha one. Now I can’t go 2 Dallas…. Guess..! I’m just gonna watch it in ppv.. Is all good.. Same ish n-e-wayzzz

  • Duel says:

It’s not only in the ring Pacman and PBF are trying to fight on…it’s in the PPV and ticket sales too!

  • onits says:

what? Pacman was only use to introduce Dallas Cowboy Stadium on the boxing map. why not use american boxers to do that? why philipino midget?

  • Colin says:

“Giving away tickets for May/Marquez..” If I recall, May/Marquez did 1.05Mil PPVs and May earned $22mil, maybe twice as much as Pac will earn for his fight in front of 45K fans. According to Tx Athletic Comm, his purse guarantee is a whopping $8Mil for Clottey fight. And sorry, Arum gets 25% of his total; Golden Boy gets a piece too.

  • JesusJones says:

Your right Colin. It’s all business. They had to do the unthinkable when they were giving away the tickets for the Mayweather, Marquez fight. Still it did not fill it to capacity. What was it under 18 thousand? Now this event is double that. Who the hell is Pacquaio and Clottey anyways to out sell Mayweather the greatest of all time.

  • cali says:

of course collins, when u only got 17k to sell out. but ur talking about 41k

  • Colin says:

You gotta love Arum, full of s*&t til the end. If he says 41K, my guess is 32-34K sold. The proof will be Sat Nite.

And, I’d rather sell 10 ticks at avg of $700 than 30 ticks at an avg price of $200; what business man wouldn’t.

  • marathonman1 says:

Don Kings first Boxing promotion was outside the US. He did 60,000 people in Kenshasa, Congo. Ever heard of the RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE? He didn’t even have the money to do it and he still pulled it off. He managed to have Foreman and Ali sign seperate contracts. The winner would get 5 million dollars. My point is this fight is nothing new in BOXING. It’s being held in a state known for shady judging. Is it good for BOXING? Yes. Is it revolutionary. Far from it. Hope Clottey does the Pulp Fiction. Win, Get the MONEY, GRAB the Girl and go back to the MOTHERLAND. Anything is possible….

  • Who Dat says:

    WTF, really?

  • Too_Many_Idiots says:

Sorry Bri, I couldnt understand a word you just wrote, you CAP LOCK button must be broken..

  • preston says:

In the immortal words of Fred G. Sanford…………….YOU BIG DUMMY!!!!!!…………………….lololollol

  • preston says:

the funny thing is about Ra-zoo, is that I didnt say ANYTHING about Pac with my comments………..but he felt the need to say something to show his man-love for Pac……….lololol………….and I am the one with that he makes the joke about????????????……….lololol.

  • It's True says:

Pac bout to loose his belt for only 6 mil. EPIC FAIL OF THE YEAR.

  • bri says:

FLOYD WOULD ACTUALLY SELL VERY WELL OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. HE IS ESPECIALLY LOVE IN THE U.K. A NICE PORTION OF PPV ACTUALLY COME FROM U.K SALES. THATS WHY HE USUALLY MAKES TRIP THERE EVEN IF HE IS NOT MATCHIN UP WITH SOMEONE FROM THERE. THEY DONT CARE HOW MUCH HE TALKS. HATTON TALKS A LOT AS WELL. HE BACKED UP HIS TALK SO THEY HAVE NOTHIN BUT LOVE FOR HIM. ONLY PLACE HE RECIEVES A LOT OF HAIT IS THE U.S. HAIT HIM OR LOVE HIM HE IS A BOX OFFICE STAR.

  • cali says:

hey loser understand that $30,000 does not mean 30,000 tickets! if it was the expensive tickets its only 1000 sold.. that still leaves 40,000 tickets sold loser

  • you know says:

The numbers don’t lie, Pac taking two losses, only 6 mil and Clottey taking his belt.

  • bri says:

TICKETS FOR MOSLEY MAYWEATHER MORE THEN TWICE THE AMOUNT FOR CLOTTEY PACMAN. AND SINCE JERRY JONES BOUT 30,000 DOLLERS WORTH OF TICKETS AND WHO KNOWS HOW MANY ABRUM PURCHASED TO ACHIEVE HIS SO CALLED SELL OUT. LOYD MOSLEY WILL ACTUALLY MAKE MORE OFF PEOPLE COMIN TO SEE THE MATCH. PPV SALES WILL BE REAL LOW. KELLY PAVLIC CANT FILL A MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL COURT WOULD MAKE NO SENSE FOR HIM TO DO MATCH AT THE STADIUM. ALL PROFITS WOULD BE USED TO PAY FOR RENTIN THE PLACE. ABRUM IS YAPPIN OUT HIS TAIL AS USUALY. PEOPLE JUST ARE NOT BUYIN HIS BS ANYMORE. JUST LIKE PEOPLE ARNT PAYIN TO WATCH MANNY ONCE MORE MATCH UP WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHO JUST LOST TO SOMEONE ALA HATTON, DELAHOYA, COTTO. NOW CLOTTEY. I HOPE HE IS OK WITH BLOOD TESTS AND 60/40 SPLIT. HIS JUST NOT THE SUPERSTAR EVERYONE MADE HIM OUT TO BE. THE NUMBERS DONT LIKE. CLOTTEY 1 MILL. MANNY 6 MILLION FOR MATCH. MOSLEY 20 MILL, FLOYD 40 MILLION.

  • Too_Many_Idiots says:

    No surprise.

I wonder how Mayweather would sell if he fought in a different country?

The fact that two non-amarican fighters can sell out a stadium in the US, is an incredible accomplishment.

  • preston says:

Ra-zoo- very funny, but whats up with you guys being soooooooooooo stupid when someone says something that you take offense too???? Some of you guys act like little girls on this site….when something is said that is deemed to be negative toward Pac, somebody like you have to come runnig to his defense like a little b**ch……..sounds like you are the only ones with sombody else’s “nuts” in your mouth.

  • Kid Boxing says:

45,000 is really a huge figure, you can’t argue with that.

  • wowzabean says:

    dayum,

I’ll tell you what happened to that “talk,” it never started to begin with. Seated to 40k and surpassing it, did a good job selling tickets.

  • Oli says:

What are you complaining for? 45,000 is not bad is it.

  • julito el loco says:

Now I asked. What’s a sellout in the MGM in Vegas? 41,000 people is more than double of what is going to be the Mosley-Mayweather “eventual” sellout. So c’mon. Even if they don’t get to 45,000, it is still a enormous crow for a boxing fight.

  • dayyammmm says:

heh, 45,000 seats filled in an 80,000 seat stadium = sell-out? snicker.

(btw what happened to all that talk about hitting 100,000? lol)

I guess ticket sales weren’t all that great, Arum tends to exaggerate his numbers, so it’s more than likely less than 41,000 sold. Not to mention Jerry Jones apparently bought $30,000 worth of tickets.

  • Cadillacin979 says:

I cant wait to be there! Its going to be a great night!!!

  • preston says:

Somehow, I have a feeling that exactly 4000 seats…..no more or less. will be sold by friday.
