Alexander vs. Urango this Saturday

By Sam Gemmell: World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (19-0, 12 KO’s) takes on Colombian hardman IBF light welterweight champion Juan Urango (22-2-1, 17 KO’s) at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conneticut this coming Saturday night. 23 year-old Alexander recently beat Junior Witter by an 8th round stoppage for the vacant WBC light-welterweight title in August 2009. Nobody has ever dominated former champion Witter like Alexander did, winning virtually every round whilst hurting the good chinned and very awkward Witter.

That was Devon’s first major test and he passed it with flying colours. Devon is a very skilled fighter, and has underrated power. On the other hand, we have Juan Urango who is extremely tough and will arguably be Alexander’s biggest test to date. Urango stopped Randall Bailey in his last fight in the 11th round in a hard fought contest in August 2009, and Urango’s only two career losses came to the hands of top level fighters Ricky Hatton and Andre Berto, the WBC welterweight champion.

Never been stopped before, Urango is a come forward fighter who has good power and a good chin. I see Alexander out-boxing Urango throughout the 12 rounds. Alexander may hurt Urango a few times but I doubt he will stop him. I see Alexander winning a very wide decision.

    @Nick Winner

    I knw mate, Hatton gets alot of stick but at the end of the day he was the best light-welterweight in the world a few years back.

    I just want to thank you for calling Hatton a top level fighter.

    Most people seem to forget the dominance he reigned before his 2 losses (to the top pound for pound boxers in the game)

    Good man Sam!
