Alexander stops Urango in 8th round TKO

By Jim Dower: In somewhat of a shocking knockout, World Boxing Council light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13 KOs) stopped IBF light welterweight champion Juan Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) in the 8th round tonight in a unification match at the Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Alexander, 23, although not known for being a big puncher, used speedy shots against the plodding Urango all night long to riddle him to pieces. In the 8th round, Alexander knocked Urango to the canvas with a beautiful uppercut to the head. After Urango got up, Alexander finished him off with a couple of hard shots to the head to put him down for the 2nd and final time in the round. The fight was officially stopped at 1:12 of the 8th.

motownhitman, it’s obviously disgusting to see a judge having Urango ahead. But the fight at least in my eyes wasn’t that open(Urango winning a round), My socre was 67-66 for DA at the time the fight ended, because he simply was letting Urango getting closer to the fight, his style is good but not great, he needs to protect more and use more combos. Judges stole fights from fighters who use the jab as much as DA does.

So it looks like Devon Alexander is for real.

You can add his name to the ever growing list that Amir khan will NOT agree to fight.

The clear leaders in this division are Bradley and Alexander now. Khan CANNOT be mentioned alongside them as khan has done NOTHING impressive like this and is NOT on their level. Khan is not a real champion he is just a fraud. If he wants to be taken seriously he needs to start facing top opposition and then meet the likes of Bradley and alexander. Khan is NOT on their level and WONT be facing top opposition soon and so CANNOT be considered among the best

    @ jimmyconway

Hate to disagree mate but Witter lost to Bradley fair and square.

  • motownhitman says:

One of the jacka## judges had urango ahead at the time of stopage!

    @ Ken D

You’re always bashing people for nothing you knob! What’s wrong with Malcolm supporting a fighter from where he lives? People like you make me sick, you’re probably a little scrote who wouldn’t say to words face to face, pr**k

  • ZKO says:

That uppercut actually raised Urango in the air. I’d definately like to see Alexander vs. Bradley. I’d also like to see Khan take on someone at the level of Urango or Peterson so he can be considered at the same level of Alexander and Bradley. Khan has lots of publicity, but Alexander and Bradley create their own publicity in the ring.

  • Pete says:

I don’t care how good your chin is, if you get clocked with an uppercut like that it’s got to be lights out. Very impressed, bring on Khan and Bradley lets sort this division out.

Though my gut tells me Khan is the man to beat in this division.

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Bradley is the King at 140. Devon did what he needed to do to pull his weight. I think Devon should fight Madaina or the winner of Khan and Pauli…

  • Bob says:

Nun Pimp lets not get excited cause Valero would knock both of these guy’s out.

  • z says:

definitely an impressive KO, DA showed he doesnt just have speed but power too. Would LOVE to see him fight Bradley

  • asif says:

i rate devon much more then i used to. He is an amazing boxer. I hope he fights bradley/khan. The welterweight division is getting really hot.

  • stu says:

& now we know why bradley ducked alexander. really good win.

  • lump from D.C says:

youngster looked good, lets not get ahead of ourself urango was tailored made but devon got all thee tools to be a force

  • jimmyconway says:

Huge respect for that KO. Urango cant box, everyone knows that but he has a strong chin, and Alexander ripped him apart. Thats it for Urango now, you cant lost to Hatton, Berto and Alexander and still deserve a shot at world title when there are so many contenders ahead of him at this weight.

Alexander v Bradley would be a big fight, Bradley isnt as strong as Alexander. Witter won the fight against Bradley, it was a poor decision, whereas Alexander stuffed him.

As for Khan, I dont think he will be too bothered by this performance, he would have expected it to be honest. By the end of the year, Khan will be looking to unify the belts so Alexander is a must. But politics is politics, and no doubt we will have every board of control forcing defences all over the place, and the big fights may not happen.

  • Ken D says:

Malcom Brown, What a total idiot you are “we got your back”?? I’m sure Alexander is sooooo happy to know You got his back.MUPPET!

  • Malcolm Brown says:

Way to go homie! nrth side in the house! Wow ! that was impressive, and certainly put Devon seriously in the mix! Bring those belts back to Lou! We always got your back -here on Coleman st. Have a safe trip back!

  • Tim says:

Yeah I agree there’s no way Roach and GBP will put him in with Khan now….Shame as would be a good fight but a better one would Devon vs Bradley

  • kray says:

Damn…Devon fought a near flawless fight. That KO was the icing on the cake, would have been a UD, otherwise. Zab tried to pull a Mosely. But, the youngster handled that situation well. I see a fight vs Bradley, in his future…maybe Zab later on.

  • dayyammmm says:

Roach just crossed Alexander’s name off the chalkboard, there is no way in hell Devon gets anywhere near Amir Khan now.

  • graham says:

Wow! Devon, I didn’t expect that. What a surprise, bring on Timothy Bradley!

  • carl says:

Since reports says nobody wants to face Timothy Bradey at jr welterweight how about Devon Alexander, so promoters need to make that fight my money is with Alexander and the winner can fight Edwin Valero since he vacated his lightweight belt to move up. Alexander is the real deal but a fight with Bradley or Valero would be fireworks.

  • Bloopers 101 says:

What an upper cut, Urango got lifted up on his feet. wow!

    Watch out heres come Alexander!
