Abraham’s management to file a protest to have an immediate rematch

By Scott Gilfoid: Arthur Abraham’s German promotional company Sauerland plans on filing a protest over Abraham’s 11th round disqualification loss to Andre Dirrell in their stage 2 Super Six tournament bout last Saturday night at the Joe Louis Arena, in Detroit, Michigan. With Abraham well behind in the fight and need of a knockout to win in the 11th round, Abraham hit Dirrell with a right hand to the head after Dirrell had slipped on the canvas logo and was on one knee.

The punch hurt Dirrell, knocking him unconscious for a short period of time. Referee Lawrence Cole immediately disqualified Abraham, who instead of admitting that he had made a mistake by hitting Dirrell while he was down, called him an actor. Abraham said later that he couldn’t see that Dirrell was down on the canvas when he threw the punch and that he had already winded up to throw the shot and couldn’t stop. Abraham said “I was already in the middle of throwing it and could not stop.” Abraham’s promoter Wilfried Sauerland wasn’t happy that Dirrell was able to get away with throwing low blows.

It’s unfortunate that Abraham doesn’t understand why he should have been disqualified. That’s worrisome, because if he doesn’t see why he was disqualified it makes you wonder whether he has a clear idea about the rules in boxing. There’s certain things that just aren’t permitted and if you let a fighter get away with them and the make excuses later by saying the other fighter was faking that they were hurt, you could have that as being an excuse that other fighters use to get away with fouls.

What Abraham did in throwing a hard right hand with Dirrell on the canvas was inexcusable. Abraham should have immediately owned up to what he had done rather than saying that Dirrell was acting. It made himself look bad by doing that because not only did Abraham throw an illegal blow while his opponent was down, but also by making it seem like Dirrell was faking, Abraham comes across as a dirty fighter and a poor sport.

What he should have done was admit what he did was wrong, apologize and then let the boxing fans decide for themselves who was to blame in this case. It’s hard to blame Dirrell, even if you think he was faking being hurt. There’s no question he was hit while he was down. You can’t escape that. The question is whether Dirrell was truly hurt or not.

That’s something that won’t be reversed on appeal. I think Abraham’s promotional team is wasting their time with this. They should be apologizing, admitting wrong and the moving on from this. Abraham needs to learn that he’s going to have problems against some of the slicker fighters like Dirrell and Andre Ward in the Super Six tournament. Before last Saturday, Abraham was largely shielded from talented fighters like this by the fact that he’s fought most of his career in the middleweight division, which has been horribly poor for the past five years.

With the talent pool incredibly thin, Abraham has been able to beat the over-matched opposition that has been served up to him. Abraham has had things even easier, as his German management has often put him in with weaker opposition during his non-mandatory defenses. So after having things his way as a champion of a weak division for three years, Abraham is now having problems when put in with a good fighter like Dirrell.

You can expect Abraham to continue to struggle when and if he gets matched with Ward. The blue print was made last Saturday night by Dirrell in how to beat Abraham, and I’m not talking about being hit while on the canvas. Dirrell boxed circles around Abraham all night long, making him look limited. By the 11th round, Abraham had only one chance to win the fight and that was by knockout. Abraham will likely struggle just as bad, if not worse, against Ward when the time comes for them to fight in the future.

As for Abraham’s protest to have a rematch with Dirrell, I don’t see him having a chance of that occurring. Abraham had his chance and blew it by losing his cool and landing the shot when Dirrell was down. Abraham now has a loss to show for his loss of self control, and he’ll have more losses in the future if he doesn’t learn to manage his emotions.

Why don’t Dirrell’s fans mention the low blow? he gives a low blow , then attacks the guy? I mean can it get any dirtier than that? he gets clear knock down, and pretends he slips….

  • Artiom says:

Hail to the King. You don’t become a King by doing nothing. All of you badmouthing Abraham: step up and feel it. Otherwise let there be a rematch and shut the f* up with your excuses.

  • BDO says:

STUPID MONKEIES REFEREE SHOULD BE DISQUALIFIED , NOT THE KING,
    NOR THE ACTOR.

  • jake318 says:

Tugh crowd lol … Dirrell wasnt faking!! look at the entire round AND the previous round . he was hurt badly BEFORE the illegal punch . I had 50$ on Dirrell and thought i was about to lose the bet . Dirrlee gets floored alot during training and has 2nd reflex to jump back up even if out on his feet . the illegal punch just put him over the edge . its common , I explained this in other threads on this fight .

  • KingDaddy6 says:

Completely agree with Heavy G. Everything Dirrel did as he was supposedly knocked out was a complete exaggeration. When was the last time you saw a fighter reach for his head when he gets knocked out? Perfect example: Pacquiao – Hatton. Hatton went straight down. No flailing arms, no forlorn staring into Pacquiao’s eyes, head bouncing off the canvas, etc. Dirrel was exactly the opposite! The stare, the reaching for his head/scratching his eyes, the slow and rehearsed ease onto the canvas, etc…What a beeyaatch!

  • Avo says:

    dirrell the biznatch! haha

  • dayammm says:

LIke everybody’s been saying, it don’t matter, AA hit the guy while he was down. Automatic DQ, byebye undefeated record.

To be honest, the DQ is the least of AA’s worries. Abraham should be WAY more concerned with the fact that he got straight up exposed. Dirrell laid out the blueprint on how to completely dominant him. Any boxer with an active jab, lateral movement, and stamina for 12 rounds is going to put a clinic on AA. (Cough*Andre Ward*Cough).

  • heavy G says:

The DQ was an easy and good call. However, I believe that Dirrel was not hurt and laid down to get the DQ. It was he who was weakening late in the fight and beginning to feel Abrahams power.

Dirrel was winning the fight and was finally showing how a guy who hustles and stays out of the way of a big Abraham bomb can defeat the German, even defeat him easily. Andre was winning the fight handily, but slowing down and getting hurt by Abrahams punches in the last few rounds.

When Dirrel was first punched while kneeling, he looked straight into Abrahams eyes; when is the last time you saw a guy get knocked cold but before he goes out, he focuses directly into the eyes of his opponent. I have never seen it. To my mind, the twitching and moaning was acting and minutes long lay-down was acting.

Then, when he regained his feet, he was holding his temple (the punch landed on the chin) and squinting into the air as if in severe pain.

Having been KO’d myself, I never really felt the pain of the punch until the next day and the headache, bruises and sprained jaw caused me to run to the aspirin bottle.

As I said, I think the fight was called correctly, no question. However, I think a good acting job by Dirrel was part of the equation.

    Southernwanderer:

They also used to fight 20 rounders and probably ate rocks for breakfast back then. Times have changed, rules and regulations are in place and enforced for the safety of the fighters. It was the right call and even Abraham knows it although he won´t admit it.

  • Southernwanderer says:

While I agree that AA was rightfully disqualified for punching Dirrell while he was down, many people seem to overlook the fact that former World heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano knocked out some of his opponents while they were down on one knee and was never disqualified.
Doesn`t that also make Marciano a dirty fighter?

  • scott talks a says:

abrahams is an overhyped middleweight with no real place in the super middle division 5 10″……better going back to middleweight otherwise he ill be disadvantaged in all fights in this division

  • scott talks a says:

if dirrell fought like that against froch he would have got knocked out instead he chose to run like a coward

  • scott talks a says:

    froch is the main man

  • DaOleOneTwo says:

AA was desperate, frustrated, and losing badly. He was picking up the pace greatly dropping his hands when he was coming in, dose wide left hooks to set up his wide right hooks. Now if you want to talk predictions as to what may of happen if the fight continued, AA he was leaving himself open alot in the last few rounds and could of got tagged by some good shots by Dirrell that would ended with AA on the canvas.

  • Rob says:

    DaOleOneTwo-

Will all the psychics on this site they should start their own betting service since so many users seem to know everything that will and was going to happen!

  • DaOleOneTwo says:

The Ruler another guy with his own crystal ball.

  • The Ruler says:

Ok I watched the fight. I had predicted AA would KO AD in the 6 round. I was wrong. Fair enough, Direll outboxed easily Abraham almost all the fight, but Abaraham wasn’t destroyed. He was still standing and ready to fight. It`s Direll who couldn’t fight anymore. Yeah I know it was a cheap shot, but that happens guys. It`s not the first time it`s happening in boxing and I believe it was not intentional. AA is not a dirty fighter.

The referee was the WORST refere ever. Very biased referee. This clown referee ruled the 10 round KO of Abraham as a slip and he didn’t stop Direll when AA was complaining to the referee about the low blow.

I think Direll faked, so he could get a easy way out and not risking being KO a la Jermain Taylor in the 12 round. I have to say he’s a very good actor.

So in short, AA lost but is still undeafeted for most AA fans, because he didn’t lose by KO or by decsiion. He lost by disqualification. He made a msitake, only 1 and thats costs him the fight. I believe AA would have KO Direll if the fight continued until the 12 round.

I’m looking forward to the 3 round of the supersix Ward vs Direll. I believe Ward will easily school Direll. Ward will dominate him from start to finish.

  • DaOleOneTwo says:

And at some point in the Super Six AA will have to meet up with Andre Ward. And As Rob Refrenced on the ” How to Boxing Lesson”
AA better watch it if he even wants to stand a chance to still be on his feet after 12.

  • DaOleOneTwo says:

Ok. once and for all. Here in America we have rules to boxing which protects the fighters from serious injury and DEATH. And hitting a fighter when he’s down and unable to protect himself is one of them. Now I like AA and am not biased on this matter like some here. AA not seeing he was down is a bunch of BS, I think I actually saw him have to bend his knees to Hit Dirrell. On the contrary to what people say Dirrell was not Running he was BOXING, unlike what AA was doing which is HIDING. And I’m sick of peoples predictions AA was about to do this AA was about to do that. He didn’t do diddly-squat for 11.5
rounds but get his ass handed to him.

  • Rob says:

    Ad Sissy

Plain and simple you are a dumb@ss. Being more powerful means nothing, this isn´t a weight lifting competition. Speed kills and it killed Arty Abrasham all night long. If you want to learn how to box Dirrell just gave you a free ´how to´boxing lesson tape on how to outbox, outclass, knock down and thoroughly dominate a slower, automatic unskilled european boxer like Abraham who has very little talent other than hoping and praying to god that he can land a hayemaker. his best bet is to get a construction job where he can lift bricks all day long because he has been exposed for the fraud that he is.

  • Brusa says:

Direll won the fight clearly, but know that the american knows what it takes a good hook of the king i doubt he will try a rematch

  • Sauna says:

Not matter what any of the AA fans say, It’s a DQ!!! You can not hit a man when he is down. He doesn’t have to be hurt by the punch either. If you clearly hit a man while he is down it’s a DQ. He saw him down because he clearly walked over and hit him. You can not deny the reply. The name of the the sport is Boxing not “stand and trade”. You have the right to avoid being hit and move. Dirrell stood toe to toe alot in this fight and whooped AA. He didn’t run. He was boxing and moving away from a desperate fighter. Man, if boxed your ears off and won 8 rounds out of 12. I would preserve the win. Forget about the rest of the fight. I destroyed you for 3/4 of the fight and I would not take any chances. Most trainers would back you off and tell you to fight based on necessity and be careful after winning 8,9 rounds. That kid was still fighting. AA has to stop giving up 6 rounds in every fight and hoping he can knock the guy out. That will not work with the top tier guys.

  • Nick Winner says:

All of you who say “you understand where AA was coming from”, you are IMPRESSIVELY ignorant. Like their should be a medal handed out for people like you. Along with a helmet.
If you watch the replay, Dirrell’s ass is basically on the ground when he gets hit. Heat of the moment or not, AA cleared his punch on the way down and completely wound up for a fresh right hook once AD was down.

This is WHY Boxing is losing its fan base, this is why those assclowns in the UFC are getting more attention. Desperate, Protected fighters like AA are putting their skills aside and letting their pansy ass emotions take control.

If you want to fight like that, go get in the ring with Quentin “Rampage” Jackson and see how long you last.

Pathetic. Just goes to show how little respect European boxers have for American Boxers. Froch body slamming. Abraham Punching while down.

Have some class you pathetic orgy consummated SCUM!

  • David says:

Abraham started late just like in the fight with Taylor. You could see that Dirrell was getting very tired in the 10th and 11th rounds and was running away, if Abraham got him he would have knocked him out. Dirrell could see that he was in trouble and seized a foolish mistake by Arthur to win by DQ. Coward chanted the fans at Dirrell and it is true he is a coward.
After this incident I believe JUSTice will triumph and Abraham will go on and win the Super Six.

  • Matt Porter says:

Hate to say it, but this is the most logical article Scott has written. Even if he is biased. Abraham had no excuses and was comfortably outboxed for 95 percent of the fight.

  • Rob says:

    Piero -

Go eat a canoli some pasta and get a life, Abraham was robbed?? Robbed of what? his dignity when he hit a defenseless Dirrell on his knees, dirty Armenians, just like Darchynian, seems like they breed dirty fighters over there.

  • G says:

its was all a fix, the ref got a nice golden handshake, Dirrell is a cheat. end of story

  • Ukansodoff says:

The whole thing has turned out to be a real messy afair, from the changed dates, venues, judges, ref, knockdowns, low blows, buts and the final shenanigans in the 11th.

But trying to look through it all and into the actual boxing that went on id say of the 2 boxers Dirrell deserved to win and did win. AA didnt really fight any differnt to usual but he couldnt cope with the superior tactition.

Id watch a re-match but i dont think theres actually enough contraversy in it all to actual question who was the better of the 2.

Yeah he had another round left to try to KO Dirrell but even though the pressure was mounting he didnt have him in serious trouble, AA was bound to pile it on and any boxer knows you have just got to ride that part of the fight out and you never look good doing it.

  • piero says:

dirrel is like so many other american boxers. as soon they know they are out, they start to cry. in these case dirrell got hit but he fake big time!! hes corner know that, also they fake the riot. the acting was so clear !during these fight you can clearly see the referee was in love with dirrell. the fight was already on dirrell hand as soon i see what the referee was doing!!! abraham was robbed big time ( i am not a fun of artur but after these bout i am sure that he’s the hardest middleweight out there.

  • piero says:

guys : the ref was waiting for a dirty punch to desqualif… abraham. he did not score a clear kd in favore of abraham. dirrell was really ampty at that moment he fake the ko becouse for sure was going to be ko!!! he wont give a rematch becouse abraham hit really hard.theat referee it’s garbage he should’nt be in the ring again.

  • frad says:

lex watch the incident back and you’ll realise he didnt throw the punch with anything near full power.

  • lex_fugitive says:

How did a straight at eye level knock Taylor out cold, but its impossible to believe a haymaker that AA put everything he had into and had the force of gravity adding to the damage not KO Dirrell? If that punch didn’t KO Dirrell than he obviously could take anything Arthur threw. He put everything he had into it and had gravity working with it. If Dirrell faked that, then he could obviously stand and take anything AA threw, because he got hit with everything AA had. It can’t be both, either Dirrell has a granite chin and is impossible to knock out or he actually was KO’ed by one of the dirtiest shots ever.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    Anna;
You are right, Abraham probably would eat part of Dirrell if they fought again. The only question is what part of the body would AA bite off? Tyson already did the ear bit with Holyfield, so maybe a chunk out of dirrell’s arm or possibly his nose if Dirrell is embarrassing him too bad.

  • Peplz says:

    @Q
you are delusional my freind. You are saying that Froch, who barely landed one meaningful shot during the entire fight with Dirrell some how outclassed him. I’d like to hear your explanation of that. And at what point did Abraham land anything that “dazed” Dirrell? It takes more than 1 or 2 arm punches to hurt an opponent.

  • kray says:

Direll fought an excellent fight. AA clearly does not know how to handle boxers who stick and move. His style works against opponents who are there to be hit. He will no doubt struggle with Ward, as well. The DQ was deserved, whether AD was hurt or not. It was CLEARLY a solid, calculated cheap shot. AA was frustrated, because he was giving AD his best effort, and AD was embarrasing him.

  • Troy says:

Abraham = coward, no integrity, no credibility, no humility, walking piece of garbage

  • Anna says:

Dirrell will NEVER fight Arthur Abraham again ‘cuz he knows he’ll be eaten alive. Abraham’s team should get a team of head injury experts, subpoena Dirrell’s hospital records and run a malingering test on him.

  • Anna Menedjian says:

Jean, I agree with you! I’ll put my money on Arthur Abraham anytime. The guy’s a total winner and would have won last night, if Dirrell hadn’t faked his way out of the ring. Abraham’s team should get a team of head injury experts, subpoena Dirrell’s hospital records and run a malingering test.

  • stu says:

tbh you’re showing a bit of class for a change. nice one scott.

  • Troy says:

Ricardoh – so no mayweather for you then?

  • Ricardoh says:

When you get knocked out you don’t look around and see what is happening before you lay down. I won’t pay to see a fighter who runs all night. That just isn’t boxing to me. If you want to fight then fight don’t show me your track skills.

  • Troy says:

    The King? More like AbraSHAM!

  • My says:

Arthur Abraham is to hard for him – Derrill will never fight agains Abraham in his Live!

Where was the referee? Everybody in this Boxing world know what happend`s when Abraham start his quickly hard serie of beats at an opportune moment!!! The Adrenalin was so high that he must go only the referee can stop him in this moment – this is Boxing – but the referee wasn`t there at this critical moment!!! Arthur Abraham is the Best fighter of the World
Arthur Will F Dirrell up and everybody nows that so fk that hollywood e~!!

  • Troy says:

    @me

Amen! unfortunately most posters are psychic, write their own rules, are delusional and or just plain idiotic and they cannot accept the truth.

  • dayammm says:

LOL, rematch for what? AA was getting schooled all night, and even dropped on his ass for the first time. Look at the guy’s face and tell me he didn’t get his lunch money took. And he seriously wants to come back for more?

  • tiger says:

this fight was one of the worst i’ve ever seen in boxing. One can’t stand on his own legs and one can’t take it professional. Anyways, AA’s fight was more interesting to me and he was about to put the end, once realizing that, AD kept fleeing and slipping to save some time. Both cheap and deserve each other, i am disappointed.. hope someone else will win the tournament.

  • me says:

when you hit someone when they are down it is a automatic dq regardless if they are faking being hurt or not….check the rules of boxing before you post a comment

  • Larry canada says:

tom britt you are a idiot to think aa is still undefeated

  • Bruno says:

cant believe im agreeing with mr gilfoid but i have to say good performance by dirrel. AA was coming on strong tho, would have been an interesting last round as dirrel was feeling the heat.

  • bronco billy says:

to protest suggests that the ref made a mistake or that the call was contraversial,.. there was mistake,.. the replay clearly shows AA winding up and striking Dirrell with all his might AFTER Dirrell slipped on a wet spot,.. IN AA’S CORNER,… this call is a clear cut as the bricks found in Margarito’s gloves,.. if anything,.. AA should get a one year suspension from boxing

  • lou says:

A rematch should be held in a Nuetral country cause US Refs cheat for American fighters and German refs cheat for German fighters. Dirrell will out box him but i think Abraham will knock him out cause once a china Chin is broken it continues to break. Just ask Jermain taylor.

  • gfdisgsfg says:

Everyone says he was faking it because he put his hands up. I’m pretty sure Andre Dirrell knows what a ko usually looks like he wouldn’t put his hands up he it he was faking it. Sometimes, not all the time, when fighters get ko’d they stick their arms out or their legs at awkward positions, hell i’ve seen mma fighters get ko’d then grab the referee and start trying to wrestle because they aren’t thinking straight and their instincts take over, it’s really not so unreasonable that Dirrell would put his hands up after a punch like that.

  • 15 Rounds says:

    Well said Scott Gilfoid.

  • chh says:

MAYBE AA would have knocked out AD…MAYBE…but we’ll never know since he had to resort to a cheap shot. Watch the replay. Watch him look down at AD while he’s on his knee THEN wind up and hit him square on the jaw. That was an intentional illegal blow. AA, his management team, and his fans can dispute it all they want, but it was a clear violation of the rules and he lost by DQ.

That others have hit people after they were down does not justify the next person to do it. They should have been DQ’d as well if it were a blatant foul. Margarito should have been DQ’d against Cotto … that he got away with it and went on to victory does not make it OK to do. Boxing is filled with bad calls by referees. That’s why they have commissions to review protests like this one. I doubt the commissions will agree with AA’s camp, but appealing the DQ is certainly an option to consider if he truly thinks that he did nothing wrong.

  • Jay Halkim says:

Abraham just like Pacquiao is a CHEATER but instead of taking drugs he fights dirty..

You know this is true (esp all off you who defend Abraham and pac).

  • Troy says:

    @Ste

Really, plenty of boxers have hit a guy while on 2 knees and not been DQ, like who, please give us the list?

You have no idea what was going to happen if Dirrell was able to continue, AA had barely landed a punch in the 11th round, to say he was going to knock Dirrell out is ridiculous, nobody knows what would have happened so let´s not make speculation statements like they are facts. A chicken is not the guy who can´t continue because of an illegal blow, a chicken is a guy who hits another boxer while on 2 knees, an obvious and flagrant foul for which he was DQd.

  • Troy says:

    @tom britt

Check again mate, he lost, has a loss on his record. Because you say he won doesn´t make a difference. It´s in the books, get over it

  • Anonymous says:

u can dispute the KD that abraham got on dirrell. but he had his foot behind dirrells foot. and if u count that then u have to count the beautiful counter dirrell hit AA with and only the ropes saved him. which the reff didnt count as a KD. it was a great performance by dirrell but was ruined by the dirty shot

  • Anonymous says:

    Q
if u go round by round. and give a 10-9 to the winning fighter. the froch fight was dirrells hands down.

  • Anonymous says:

dirrell slipped and fell on that same spot in the earlier rounds and abraham did not punch him. that to me tells me he knows when a fighter is down. this was jus frustration that dirrell was putting on a clinic and boxing his ears off. and he knew he had no way of winning. u can say he was making a come back and say that he couldve knocked him out. but dirrell was still wining some of those rounds and countering very effectivly. he made him look like a joke when he missed about 10 punches when he had dirrell trapped in the corner.they can complain all they want and say the couldve knocked him out but he cost himself that chance. and he has no one to blame but him

  • Troy says:

    Ste

You should work in Vegas because you are obviously a psychic genius that can predict future knockouts, maybe you can make those bold predictions before the fights instead of after them.

  • Bazooka Joe says:

    Are they actually serious?!?

  • Dodswm says:

Can’t believe I agree with Gilfraud :p Dirrell definitely upped his game though, and all credit to him…

Dissapointing and frankly, dirty boxing from Abraham

  • Paul says:

Why have a rematch? It’s just going to be worse for Abraham the next time around.

  • Lamotta_91 says:

i’d give gilfoid credit for predicting this but he is so bias he backs all American fighters, so there was no education behind his prediction.
Im glad Dirrell won this makes the tournment a little bit easier for Froch, providing he beats Kessler.

  • Q says:

why do you ride dirrell so hard? dirrell is just another jermain taylor who did the same thing to abraham, and given another round if dirrell hadn’t faked would’ve been knocked flat on his back, he was already dazed and hurt before the ‘slip’..it seems like everytime dirrell is hurt he fakes a ‘slip’ then rides his bike..but hey aren’t you the writer who though dirrell beat froch no questions down? give me a break, your pretty close minded, froch outclassed and beat dirrell hands down brother.

  • Tony says:

A very well written article, I couldn’t he actually hit him while he was down and to say he had already wound up and couldn’t stop is an insult to the boxing fan base. I liked Abraham for his show of character and poise during his fight against “La Pantera” Edison Miranda, but that performance could have potentially been the exception vice the norm…bottom line…he was wrong; he would have been better off saying “I’m sorry” and I didn’t mean it and allowing the boxing fan base to decide what happened. Additionally, I don’t think he has a prayer against Ward!

  • Phoocquiao says:

I agree, I think he should just take the DQ. Having said that, I totally get where King Arthur was coming from. I believe that he prolly didn’t realize that Dirrel was down, and due to Dirrel’s delayed reaction, I even understand the actor comments.

It was the heat of the moment so I’s not surprised that he didn’t make the best comments when he was interviewed.

Dirrel was clearly down though, and i hope he hasn’t suffered any real permanent damage.
