Will Foreman send Cotto into retirement?
By Dave Lahr: Former WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto has been struggling since taking a terrible beating at the hands of the Mexican tornado Antonio Margarito in July 2008. Since that night in which Cotto was stopped in the 11th round and left a bloody mess, Cotto barely got by Joshua Clottey, winning a questionable 12 round split decision last year in June. And then recently, Cotto was taken out in the 12th round by Manny Pacquiao in November 2009. What made that loss even worse for Cotto was how bad he looked in the fight.
If Cotto stayed in the division, he would have a very tough time trying to beat the likes of Shane Mosley, Andre Berto and Floyd Mayweather. That trio pretty much rules the welterweight division with an iron fist. Although Cotto defeated Mosley by a close 12 round decision in 2007, that was before Cotto took a beating by Margarito. A fight between Mosley and Cotto right now would be a very hard one for Cotto, and I don’t know that he would finish the fight on his feet judging how bad he looked against both Clottey and Pacquiao.
The light middleweight division is clearly a lot weaker in terms of talent than the welterweight division. Cotto, if he decides to stay at this weight, might be able to find new life with his career. Without a big puncher like James Kirkland in the division, Cotto could somehow hang around and wins some fights. However, I don’t think it’s going to work that way.
I think Foreman could very finish Cotto off when they meet in June and send him into retirement with yet another beating. Foreman has a four inch height advantage over the 5’7” Cotto and has sneaky power. I think Foreman could end up dropping Cotto and giving him a beating along the lines of the one that Pacquiao gave him. I can see why Cotto would want to try and fight Foreman.
He has few knockouts on his record, and a reputation for being a weak puncher. But Foreman seems to have been developing power in the past couple of years and I think he’s going to be a lot more powerful than anyone ever expected him to be. The way I see it, Cotto has made a huge mistake in taking this guy on, and I think it’s going to end badly for him.
A knockout loss to Foreman would be a disaster for Cotto, his third stoppage loss in his last five fights. At that point, I don’t know how he could continue to carry on with his career. Cotto would effectively be in the same identical situation as Jermain Taylor, who has suffered stoppage losses to Kelly Pavlik, Carl Froch, and Arthur Abraham in the past three years. I think it would be a signal that it’s over for Cotto if Foreman gives him a beating and takes him out.

Well on that date I hope Cotto bring every thing he got, because Yuri is no pushover. Yuri is the L.middle weight Champion, not a bum talkin trash at the Bar. Yuri just be ready for Cotto He’s no factor, in this fight. This is a Mismatch boxing fans, and Cotto is going to get beatup again.
Look,Clearly this dude dont know nothing about Cotto or boxing, Cotto is, and will always be an elite fighter, Seriously, the guy who made this page, is a dim-witted nut , i dnt know why everyone is starting to doubt Cotto.Seeming as some of the best have been ducking Cotto for years , Mayweather for one … the guys is ‘elite’,his foughten the best and stood toe to toe against them,Yuri Foreman,is a nobody, the compariosn is major,Foreman fights on Cottos Undercard against nobodys and Miguel fights againt P4P greats. I dont Think Miguel will retire this year, the guys got alot to do still … he has to face Mayweather and Needs To fight a couple of Light-middlers to really show everybody what a champ he really is. I say after Foreman . Go after Williams.
i’m tired of bandwagon fans and writers who dont know what they are talking about. this article was probably writen by an unemployed man who listens to what people say but does not know anything. Point blank yuri will not retire cotto he is not good enough or powerful enough. second the fight against pacquiao was a bad beating but it was not a blow out. cotto was pretty dominan in the first few rouunds givin pacquiao a hard time. the fight went down hill when pacquiao knocked cootto out the second time. because after that cotto felt desperate and fell into pacquiaos fight and thats why he got beat. so the fight was not out a range. third cotto said and has been thinking about retiring by tthe age of 30 no matter if he has great success or failure. so foreman cant do nothing to speed that process and like i said he not that good. plus cotto had the misfortune of fighting margacheato so to me cotto is not shot yet he is an unbelievable fighter who needs a new corner to get back on track. cotto was pacquiaos toughest test since 2008 funny thing is that this was cotto vs pacquiao and freddy roach since cotto had a cheerleader not trainer. and as far as margarito cheating he could not break the puertorican warrior till the 11th round. cotto out boxed him and was fenominal. the only difference was margaritos chin vs cottos chin getting banged up with plaster. so foreman wont do anything learn facts sir.
What we’re forgetting is that cotto was
winning the cotto/ margarito fight.Had
margarito been playing by the rules, cotto
would have easily won. I also don’t think
the hight of foreman will be a problem for
cotto since margarito & foreman are the same
hight. Cotto did a great job of giving the 5″11
margarito all he could handle and again, WOULD HAVE
WON IF margarito had played by the rules. Foreman
will be tough, but unless he decides to come
packing plaster like margarito, cotto will win.
What we fail to forget is that cotto was
winning the cotto/margarito fight. Had margarito
played by the rules cotto would have easily won
Will Foreman send Cotto into retirement? NO!
I beg to disagree. When I saw foreman win the title, I was amazed how easy it was for him. It wasn’t because he was great; it was because the champion (what’s his name) was a bum. Totally out of shape; love handles galore! He was unsteady on his feet like he had one too many or had arthritis of the knee. I felt it was the lamest tielte fight I had ever seen! I bet Foreman was surprised too. I don’t think he wants to hang arond too long. He wants to become a rabbi. He intially offered Pacquiao a shot. I don’t think he was confident of winning. I think he wanted the millions od dollars the fight would have gotten him. With the wealth he could quii. I think Pacquiao by not choosing to fight him for his 8th title has made him overconfident. The guy, come on, doesn’t punch hard. Two years ago he started punching hard you say? Hey, I saw the fight. He is a good boxer with no power. Cotto may get hit but he is not going to back off. Cotto is more determined to win. And win he will.
all of the sudden, after 2 losses, people are hating on Cotto. The guy is a warrior and his loss to Margarito, as wel all know, is controversial. Of course Margarito had his hands illegally wrapped prior to the fight. Cotto was winning the fight up until the later rounds(which round I am not sure). And he was competitive in the Pacquaio fight until the 4th or 5th. Cotto is stil a top notch fighter and shouldn’t be underestimated.
Hai to be totally honest, against pacquaio he was totally dried out although he may not have beaten him, i think if the fight was at 147 pounds it would be much more competitive.
And against margarito he clearly won the first half of the fight it was when he started bleeding he began to go downhill. Margarito may have been using those illegal hand wraps.
But i take nothing away from clottey, i think clottey is very defensively sound and that match was a tie.
He will win against foreman trust me, this time he will not be dried out he will be fighting at a higher and more natural weight which means more power.
And hay whats with this site being so anti-cotto ive read a couple of articles about cotto on this site, im a big fan of cotto, but this site is always lambasting cotto saying hes bad. I read that article discussing a margarito-cotto possible rematch and it was really harsh on cotto. GUYS YOUR SUPPOSED TO BE IMPARTIAL!!! COTTTO IS BETTER THAN YOU THINK!!! BELIEVE ME YOU WILL SEE IN JUNE….
I can assure you that Mr. Lahr is a fat overweight, donut eating non-athlete wanna be sport writer. His pics for this article are outdated. He also mentions that Cotto did nothing against Pacquiao. If I recall Cotto had 3 rounds to 1 at the start of the fight and managed to continue until 12. He did not quit like Mr. De La Hoya did on a stool. He took his beating like a man, was a great sport about it and now has moved on. What Dave Lahr is suggesting is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. Height and reach do not mean a thing in boxing if you don’t know how to use it. Nothing against Mr. Yuri Foreman but he does not have the skill, the talent or the smarts to beat Cotto. Height and reach will not cut it in this fight. When Foreman fought Santos, Santos was out of boxing for some time, he was slow and out of shape and Foreman could not finish him. Dave Lahr, it seems like your rooting for the next great white hope but thats not going to happen in NYC the night before the largest parade in New York state. Cotto will have a big night will be back for a big fight and I hope its Margarito and what should be done is like the crowd see live how his hands are wrapped and let see what happens from there.
This author obviously is a Cotto hater and knows nothing about boxing, what a shame. What is the difference between jermain Taylor and Cotto? Simple taylor has been KOED in all his fights that he lost. Cotto lost by TKO meaning the ref stoped the fight. Talk about margarito possibly cheating w/ plaster talk about how Pacquiao turned down40 mill for a simple blood test. Write about that. Write about how cotto defended his belt 7 times as a welterweight and 6 defenses of his Jr welterwight title. In no way is JT anything close to Cotto. Every fight I’ve seen of foreman were in the goldrn gloves and vs Santos Cotto is no golden glove fighter nor a daniel Santos. This editor knows nothing about boxing its writers like this that ruin the integrity of Boxing.
We all seem to forget that Clottey intentionally head butted Cotto that ripped him wide opened. He continued the fight and pulled the victory whether split decision or not he still pulled it out. How can you say he is done. The man is willing to fight anyone and I mean anyone. He still has the boxing skills and smarts to continue his career. He states he ends his career this year at the age of 30 lets hope he goes out like a true champ.
Dub article cotto will smash yuri… cotto allready beat shane and berto lol …berto is overrated never been tested …cotto to me is undefeated his two losses were from two cowards…look at pac walkn away from 40 mill to a 20 mill fight with nothing to gain… omg a few blood drops get real
this fight should not happen Cotto is a Welterweight and Yuri is a real Middle weight fighter so to people in the boxing world this is a MISMATCH People, Cotto will loss and thats the end of Cotto. Cotto get back with ur Unlce and get a Title fight with the winner of the Berto -Carlos bout.
@ Mike…
LOl, I wouldn’t go that far. From a fans stand point they’re great entertainment but after there career is over how many fans still route for the fighter who’s speech has declined and face looks saggy i.e. Arturo Gatti. Fighters like Cotto who built a name become something that looks good on a resume. I.E. like Marco Antonio Barrera as of late.
@Solini You mean fighters like cotto (true warriors who fight the best are loved by the fans and duck no one) =)
Fighters like Cotto don’t last long. Look at the late Arturo Gatti, someone who made a name for himself for having classic wars. But those fights add up and giving the brutal beating he took from Margarito he’s been shakey ever since. I give Pacquaio credit for beating him, but considering he took a brutal beating from Margarito then more punishment from Clottey all Pac-man had to do was give him a gentle push and Cotto was done for. I knew Cotto was done as a fighter in the Clottley fight he lost that sinister gaze he used to give opponents
i believe that cotto wins this in a brutal way, right LAHR? oh your still writing.
btw.. yuri send cotto into retirement? hahaha.. dont bet your house on it. cotto is gonna box the socks off of foreman. yuri has never fought a fighter of cotto”s caliber. believe that !!
whoever is in charge of posting the pics for the articles on this site is a complete nimrod. why would you keep putting up pictures of cotto vs plaster boy? when the pictures have nothing to do with the article? cant you dude find better pics of cotto? or do you guys just love humiliating the poor man? it”s been 2 years since .. let him live!! get off his sack!!
Cotto wins this easy. Foreman is not in the same league as Cotto. I think Cotto has moved to light middleweight just to become a 3 weight world champion and will probably move back down to welterweight after this fight, but I would like to see him fight Paul Williams if he stays at light middleweight.
No way does Foreman win by KO or TKO over Cotto. Regardless of the outcome and how good Cotto looks, I feel he should retire. I say this, because I like the guy and I honestly don’t want to see him end up like Meldrick Taylor or Terry Norris or Ali. After the plaster-of-paris beating he should have fought Jennings and then called it quits. Honestly, Cotto has way too much heart and is good enough to keep the ref from stopping it when he is just getting pummeled and seriously injured in the ring. Boxing is a dangerous job, and Cotto has proven his skills and everyone knows if Margacheato never happened he could be a top fighter for years and years to come. He’s made millions and hopefully he beats Foreman and retires. That would be a good ending to a great career.
I think Foreman is a good fight for Cotto. Cotto is a pretty clever boxer at times, and he won’t have to worry about being in a war in this fight. I hope that he wins pretty decisively. He has said that he was going to retire before he turns 30. I certainly hope that this will be his year despite starting it off so tragically.
