Why did Pacquiao have to pick Clottey as an opponent?

By Dave Lahr: Out of all the welterweights in the top 15, why on earth did Manny Pacquiao and his team select Joshua Clottey to fight on March 13th? I can’t understand that pick in a million years. Why didn’t Pacquiao fight Shane Mosley or Andre Berto instead? Come on, those guys would much more interesting than a Clottey fight.
If this wasn’t Pacquiao’s doing, then he should have stood up on his hind legs and said no. Give me Mosley, Berto or better yet, give me Juan Manuel Marquez. I’d even settle for Saul Alvarez. I can’t even get into the Pacquiao-Clottey fight. I just keep picturing Clottey hanging on the ropes and Pacquiao pounding away at him like it’s some glorified sparring match. Yeah, Clottey has a chance to win, but only if he lands a lucky punch in the bread basket of Pacquiao. I think he can stop Pacquiao if he lands a hard shot to the body that Pacquiao is isn’t expecting.

Mosley signed the Berto contract and announced the fight THE AFTERNOON BEFORE THE PACQUIAO v COTTO FIGHT on November 14, 2009 ….. now why would Mosely do that if he wanted a chance to fight Pacquiao?

Firstly that statement was made some time ago, BEFORE anybody even knew Pac could beat a welter…. People have short memories and forget that pre oscar the idea of little Manny [the guy who only just moved up to lightweight] fighting a welter seemed obscene! Even during the Pac v Oscar fight when Emanual Stewart[one of the commentators] was asked about the idea of manny taking on top welters, he said “there is just no way” and “manny is a freak of nature but the people around him know he is just too small and would be best staying at lightweight”……… Now, following his outstanding and shocking victory against Oscar, Mannys people started to think that Manny could indeed move beyond lightweight. [which was never, up until that stage viewed as possible] The first logical step was jr welter and he took on the BEST at that division… Hatton! It was at the time of the Hatton fight that Roach was asked about who Pacman will fight for his first challenge at welter. Mosley’s name was brought up as a FIRST challenge to test the welter water. Mosley is a big and very strong welter #1 in fact, who has also had success at jr middle and would NOT be a suitable opponent for anybody in their first try at welter! FULLSTOP! Roach was only echoing these sentiments. Tell me lex who was your hero’s[Floyd] first welterweight challenge? Oh thats right it was the old and shot jr welter Sharmba Mitchell……. Cotto or Sharmba now who do you think is the tougher test??
Anyone google “judah spinks”??? It seems that at the time Floyd signed the that fight Zab was the undisputed welterweight champ. He was ranked as one of the elite fighters. He lost to Baldomir, but I don’t know what fight would have made Floyd as much money. Then someone that had wins over people like Clottey, and was the true lineal champ at 147. I guess when you sign a fight with the undisputed champ, thats ducking contenders like Clottey who had lost to Baldomir. after judah spinks, try “de la hoya mayorga” interesting in that every article praises Oscar’s performance in a 6 round TKO. Hatton was a top 5 or even a top 3 p4p. And Mosley was running, and ducked Floyd. But, yea I agree that is definitely ducking. Floyd needs to scrap going after champs. And so what, he started negotations with Mosley before anyone mentioned him as a possible opponent in Floyds next fight. We all know he was pressured into it. That he started the idea of making Mosley is next opponent is just Floyd working a time machine or something. But hey, Clottey is a good opponent, he almost beat Baldomir. I have to give Manny props, he went from picking up Floyds old scraps to Baldomirs. Good move.
Manny was not dodging Shane, Floyd was on the radar that time. Floyd was a bigger draw PPV and revenue than Shane. Then Shane mean time made his move to get a fight with Berto. This is not about Manny dodging Shane, its about the money. Of course we know about Floyd’s demands after that. Eventually Manny will fight both, Shane and Floyd before he retires. Manny did say something about 2 more fights and then that’s it.
I believe Roach. Who said Manny was dodging Mosley because he was too good. But I’m sure Roach was lying about this for some reason.

Floyd Sr. was Hatton’s trainer!! LMAO, wow Hatton’s trainer said he was good. And Floyd called out Mosley twice and twice Mosley ducked him. Of course Floyd tried to ignore him, Mosley simply acted like a 5 year old with ADHD. And Floyd wanted a fight with Manny. But Floyd found out what Mosley already knew, Pacquiao won’t fight anyone that good. He ducked Mosley because he was too good. Yep, Mosley kept calling out Manny, but Manny ducked him. Because he was “too good”. But I guess Floyd doesn’t duck people. Mosley finally said he wanted to fight Floyd, after Floyd had been trying to get him in the ring for 10 years!!! Yes, Floyd called out Mosley in 99 but Shane fought John Brown. In 06 Shane refused to fight Floyd saying he “needed a vacation”. Floyd Mayweather Sr. thinks People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao will get a hell of a ride should he decide to fight his ward British boxing superstar Ricky Hatton.
He said Pacquiao’s camp should be careful for what they ask, they might eventually get what they want.
“If they want Rick, they’re going to get Rick and it won’t end pretty for them,” Mayweather Sr. told IronBoxing.com’s John Martinez.
The Filipino’s coach Freddie Roach was quoted by PhilBoxing.com as saying that Hatton will be the next good fight for Pacquiao.

Mayweather Sr. echoed Roach’s sentiment, but added a different twist: “I love this fight for Rick. We will dismantle Pacquiao, Guaranteed.”
WOW @ lex… i never thought fraud was talking to mosley for a fight. because after his fight with a lightweight and got called out by shane (in the face). he just chickened out and said that shane ain’t PPV material. and now, i’m reading stuff like these, that flodicaine’s too eager to fight mosley? really?! that’s just WOW!

No Floyd would not fight Clottey. He wouldn’t fight Clottey, because you must be a top fighter for Floyd to give you your biggest payday. Clottey doesn’t have a win over any elite fighters. Really, Floyd wouldn’t take on clottey because that would be undeniable cherry-picking if he did. And actually Manny was a very heavy favorite over Cotto and Hatton. No one was saying he didn’t have a chance. They were talking about how shot Cotto is or can Hatton take a punch. As for Mosley, it was Roach who said that Mosley was too good for Manny. So, I doubt we will see Pacman fight Mosley unless he just looks horrendous against Floyd. Honestly, if Mayweather or Mosley wants a fight with Manny they better lose. We know Manny isn’t going to go after the winner.

Really? Hey check out page 21 on here and go to the MosleyBerto: Mosley needs this fight to get Mayweather or Pacquiao. Because I seemed to be saying Mayweather-Mosley was going to happen and it just so happened Mosley/Berto was still scheduled. It was thought it would be like Mayweather/Judah or Hopkins/Jones but hopefully without Mosley losing first. They were in talks and rumored to fight, it was thought they would sign to fight before he fought Berto and hoped that Mosley won, like he was favored to. All these Pacfans try in insist Mayweather was somehow forced into this, so I guess Mayweather was forced to start talks with Mosley before anyone mentioned him because he was still scheduled to fight Berto. Thats what some call revisionist history, when you go back and lie about what happened to make it sound like your opinion is right. But the fact is that Mayweather was in talks with Mosley before ANYONE had said he should be Mayweather’s next opponent.
Fact is … SSM and Berto was locked up together for a fight when Pac – Floyd negotiation fails, and the next best out there in the WW was Clottey and he was Pac best option in lined before. Floyd – SSM becomes only possible when Berto withdrew from fighting SSM after he said could not concentrate training because he of the tragedy happened in his home land back in HAiti after jolted by 7.0 earthquake that killed more than 200,000 Haitians.
I for one am tired of Mayweather fighting the best. Anyone of news yet on whether Camacho or Chavez will come back to fight Manny??
When Floyd was at 130 and 135 almost every opponent came in bigger than Floyd. At welterweight he fought Baldomir who walks around at 175-180. He then fought th bigger man ODLH at ODLH’s weight even though there was no way Floyd could get that big and weighed in at 150, 4 pounds under the limit. Hatton was smaller but he was supposed to have a better chance than anyone else to beat Floyd at the time. So, I know Floyd should have fought a nobody that was bigger, but he actually went after what was percieved as the biggest threat to his “0″. What a punk! There are perfectly ordinary fighters out there, that aren’t A level fighters and Floyd keeps ducking them. I know it does get frustrating. I don’t see why Mayweather always does better on PPVs, I can’t believe some people want to watch two great fighters go at it, when there are mismatches on.

Because Mosley and Berto were already scheduled to fight 1/30 before the May fight fell through.

The reason I won’t take the test is because I don’t need to. Mayweather is a nobody. He beat an old and overweight lightweight in 3 years and he’s making demands, puhlease. I can do anything and buy anything without another payday. I only fight because this is what I do. I fight to entertain and help my people.
If I take the test and it proves I’m clean then I beat Mayweather, what’s next? People will demand that I become a labrat. They will think I have adamantium bones or something that’s why I hit so hard. It will never end. If I don’t take the test, they will think that I’m a mutant. Mayweather started negotations with Mosley before Berto pulled out. And anyways Roach has already told us why Manny won’t fight Mosley; because Mosley is “too good”. The truth is they picked Clottey because it will be an easy win! I can’t see any scenario where Clottey even makes it a fight. He doesn’t throw enough punches to win any round against Manny and he doesn’t have knockout power. Clottey will stand right in front of Manny and cover up, letting Manny throw his combos without worrying about getting hit back. Mayweather, Mosley, Williams, honestly don’t expect Pacman to ever face any of them! After Clottey he will cherry-pick someone else!
Mosley was scheduled to fight Berto when Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations fell apart. Pacquiao needed an opponent before he starts his campaign for public office in the Philippines. The choice of Clottey as a Pacquiao opponent is another matter but the point is that the timing was not there for Pacquiao to even consider Mosley or Berto because they were on contract to fight each other. Why can’t this author not understand this. It’s about the timing and contracts and situations. It’s not about who is ducking who or who is picking who. That is besides the point for this argument. Clottey beat Cotto, Cotto beat Mosley so Pac fights Cotto and beat him. There was no one else but Floyd who was not ready to put his life on the line, so he should of stepped aside and let Mosley & Pac fight. Maybe they can switch partners, floyd fights clottey and Pac fights Mosley.
Mosley vs Berto is not off yet before Pac signed a fight with Clottey.
Pacquiao had his chance to fight Mosley last year and he ducked and chose Cotto because Mosley is more dangerous. The same this year he walked away from Floyd and Chose a fighter who just stands there in Clottey. Once pacman fights a true boxer he will be exposed AGAIN! Am I the only one who see how flawed this guys technique is? To say mayweather ducled pacquiao is just a flat out lie. Manny Pacquiao requested 10mil penalty for every 1lb over weight and Floyd agreed. Mayweather wanted blood testing but Pacquiao is the one who was afraid of needles, felt weak & mentally couldnt get over the test! Mosley was schedulded to fight Berto on Jan. 30th, Pacquiao wanted to fight on March 13th cause that date had already been selexcted for the Mayweather bout. This fight is not to improve his legacy as a good fighter but rather to improve his record in the welterweight division so Mayweather cannot duck him anymore. The way this is set up, the winner of mayweather vs mosley will be facing pac sometime late this year.
Pacquiao had a mandatory bout scheduled for March 13th… He had already signed with Top Rank, that he has to fight on that date. Mayweather negotiations fell flat. At this time, Mosley was still on schedule to fight Berto. Pacquiao couldn’t fight either or since they were still on schedule. So who is the next best thing in the WW division?…… Joshua Clottey….. I am pretty sure that if Mosley was available at the time that he was pressed to find an opponnent, that Pacquiao would have fought Mosley. The answer to your question ” Why did Pacquiao choose Clottey?” is simple. Clottey was the next best thing.
pac chose clottey bcoz… maywaether chikckened out… MOSLEY vs BERTO was set for JAN 31…. PAC has no other option but no.5 had MOSLEY vs BERTO was not set on Jan 31… or BERTO withdrew before PAC was able to choose CLOTTEY.. pAC could hav fought either CLOTTEY or MOSLEY or BOTH
Why not fight either Berto or Mosley – plain and simple answer-
Both these fighters were scheduled to fight each other last Jan 30. Their fight got cancelled after the Jan 12 Haiti earthquake – Berto withdrew from this fight around Jan 20. Pacquiao – Clottey fight floated by Top Rank as early as Jan 8 if Pacquiao Mayweather fight cannot be resurrected. Even if Pacquiao asked to fight Mosley – Mayweather and Mosley are both with Golden Boy – they would not dump Mayweather for Mosley to fight Pacquiao.

Because there was no other top welterweight available at that time. Berto was suppose to fight Mosley, Mayweather fight didn’t work out, Margarito isn’t allowed to box till certain time, so Clottey was the only top welterweight left, plus it was easy to match as both of them are promoted by Bob Arum.

Pacman is fighting one of the top 3 current welters! In his prime! Pac could still make weight in the lightweight division, but prefers to build a legacy fighting and beating much bigger men. Clottey gave a much better peformance against Cotto than Mosley did, and would beat mosley hands down. Yet somehow Clottey is unworthy?? Dave even suggests Marquez would be a better match! Yea, Floyd is fighting the best, I don’t even know why he came out of retirement if he’s not going to give B and C level fighters a chance to get in the ring with him. Mayweather started talks with Mosley BEFORE Berto pulled out. And it’s no secret why Manny won’t fight him; because he’s “too good” according to Manny’s trainer. If Mosley is too good, then we know Mayweather and Williams are too good. The reason Manny picked Clottey is because he knows he can win easily. Not a real secret. Manny isn’t known for taking on the toughest challenges. This is Manny’s MO, fighting damaged goods or second rate guys to begin with. They chose Manny because he has trouble making 147 and he can barely stand up after 6 rounds when he trains for four months and they only gave him a month and a half to make weight and get in shape. Some other reasons Clottey got the nod are: he doesn’t move his feet in a fight, he doesn’t throw many punches, he doesn’t have knockout power, he doesn’t care what cut of the purse he gets, he doesn’t have great hand speed, not a great counter-puncher. Basically, he’s a second tier fighter and that’s why Manny picked him. How many times has Manny ever fought someone that had looked good over the previous two years?

Author, do you know that promoters (and matchmakers) are responsible for scheduling fights? Berto would have been a poor choice..Mosley would have been a poor choice…it’s a good thing, as had been stated numerously, that they were already scheduled to fight each other by the time Mayweather/Pacquiao fell apart. The only fight that would make good sense (and money) would have been against Margarito..Margarito lost his license due to an incident a while back if you didn’t know.
