Vitali Klitschko says he’ll retire after Haye bout in 2010 – News

By William Mackay: World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO’s) says he plans on retiring this year in 2010 after a fight against WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (23-1, 21 KO’s). In an article at the Dailymail, the 38-year-old Klitschko says “I only have to win one belt [Haye’s WBA heavyweight title]. So this year I will hang up my boxing gloves. And I’ll stop visiting different cities to beat somebody’s face in.”

Klitschko has defended his WBC title three times since capturing the title in an 8th round stoppage against then WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter in October 2008. Klitschko stopped Juan Carlos Gomez in his first defense of his title in March 2009, and in September 2009, Klitschko took out unbeaten American Chris Arreola in a 10th round stoppage.

Most recently, Klitschko won a lopsided 12 round decision over previously unbeaten Kevin Johnson in December. Johnson looked like he came only to survive and rarely did little more than jab and lay on the ropes all night trying to keep his head out of range of Klitschko’s big shots.

Vitali, the older brother of IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, is really interested in fighting a unification bout against WBA heavyweight champion Haye. This is the only fight out there that will give the older Klitschko a good payday. Haye supposedly is interested in facing Klitschko, but first must defend his title against mandatory challenger John Ruiz on April 3rd.

If Haye gets through that fight in one piece and retains his heavyweight title, then we could be seeing a bout between Haye and Vitali Klitschko for later on in 2010. Haye says he wants to fight both of the Klitschko brothers so that he can unify all of the heavyweight straps before getting out of boxing in two years, so hopefully Haye opts to take the fight with the older Klitschko brother first rather than put it off.

Haye says he doesn’t care which Klitschko brother he fights first, Wladimir or Vitali. Given the age of the older Klitschko and his history of sustaining serious injuries while training for fights, it would be smarter for Haye to take the bout with Vitali in case he gets hit with another serious injury that might keep him out of the ring for an extended amount of time.

Haye has other options as well besides the Klitschko brothers. There’s also a rematch with former WBA heavyweight champion Valuev that is looming in the future for Haye, including a potential match against 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins. However, the big money comes against either of the Klitschko brothers, and Haye, if he’s smart, will take the fight against one of the Klitschko brothers rather than stringing it along until after Haye has had time to try and milk his title a little while longer against the likes of Hopkins and Valuev. With Haye’s weak chin, he can be beaten at anytime, so he should go for the Klitschko brothers before he gets stopped again.

you apparently didnt see haye reeling drunkenly around the ring and holding on against mormeck…and mormeck doesnt even have a big punch at cruiserweight, fraggy also staggered him…and vlad’s jab would be far harder than any cruiserweight’s right hand…valuev doesnt have a big punch and he ran from him…and on top of that he admits to not having a good chin…yet you cant figure it out…dont forget that the light hitting barrett hurt him as well…whether the punch was legal or not it didnt have much leverage behind it….

  • jackson says:

kierry what i know is that many fighters have done better against valuev…including holyfield…why would you pot shot someone who has a weak punch, is slow, and clumsy…ah, the other piece in haye’s puzzle…he has stamina issues, always has had…along with a suspect chin, one he admits to having…

  • jackson says:

haye has a weak chin, he was frequently knocked down by cruiserweights and hurt many times by fraggy…these are cruisers, they couldnt even put a dent in vlad’s chin, much less vitali…you should also learn a little boxing, haye leans forward, head exposed, throws wide punches, has balance issues, has to stop and punch, cant slide and throw punches…and he has never beaten a decent heavyweight…as lewis said, “if haye gets in the ring with either k brother it will be a disaster for him….” i also like the fake injures, most recently the broken hand that never wore a cast….

  • jackson says:

k only fights bums—he hasnt fought a fighter outside rings top 10 in his last 12 fights…haye has fought only one fighter in the top 10–his embarassing performance against valuev..he is planning bernard hopkins next, then valuev again..that’s according to golden boy promotions via espn…that will put him about 4 years into the heavyweight division, without facing a decent heavyweight, not one under 35 and in his prime….as ring magazine recently said, “haye plans to fight weak opponants, meanwhile pretending that the k brothers are running from him..” it will play well in england…

  • jonesy1981@live.co.uk says:

ant haye changed his style to beat valuev like he will change again to beat ruiz then another style to beat klitchkos they two muppets have one style each and its boring but a clever fighter like haye will find a way past there slow jabs he punches from angles the robots have never seen before he got all the tools to be a great fighter he will beat the brothers !

  • the Professor says:

Vitali wants Haye and Haye isn’t the Champion if you ask me. Evander Holyfield wants a shot at Vitati Klitsc title before he run away again. Holyfield vs. Vitali in a title fight. Holyfield beat Valvue in that fight and Valvue knew he loss, that’s why they don’t give Holyfield a rematch for the title he already won. Go back on this fight and tell me who u think won. Holyfield beat this man all 12 rounds and loss on a UD, No thats not fair Holyfield beat this giant in his hometown and the judges gave the loser the victory who got beat up like a heavybag. Holyfield prove he is a warrior and should get his shot at Vitali before Vitali quit before faceing the REAL DEAL, HOLYFIELD.

  • Tom C says:

Vitali should be viewed as effective not boring. His fight with Lewis was far from boring. Basically he’s as good as whats in front of him which through no fault of his own usually isn’t much. His only defeats have come through injury, he’s ko’d 90% of his opponents with a combination of strong jabs, cracking straight rights and well timed uppercuts. Along with a solid chin makes him 1 hell of a fighter, the best the heavyweights have to offer and too much for Haye to handle. Haye is known for his mouth so dont be suprised if this fight falls through though

  • kierry says:

do none of you understand boxing?? haye pot shotted against valuev as it was the game plan to win the belt against the big freak. now he has got passed valuev he will now KO ruiz and the 2 klitschko bros along the way.

  • David says:

Vitali Klitschko is a legend hes gonna kill Haye

  • Ant says:

Wow! Its amazing how many boxing fans are clueless. No wonder the sport is no longer in the spotlight. Haye is the most exciting HW??? Seriously? His fight with MONTEY BARRET was exciting only in the fact that he was knocked down and stuggled so much. A guy that Wlad easily disposed of while he was in his prime. Haye’s only other HW fight was against Valuev which was awful. It was even worse than Vitali’s fight with Johnson. But at least Vitali made it somewhat interesting by throwing the most punches ever in a HW bout and taughting Johnson in the 12th round. Let it be known though that Johnson was a complete embarrasment and showed up strickly to survive. The guy didn’t want to fight at all. At least Vitali tried to fight him, as boring as it was. When did Haye ever try to fight the joke of a champion Valuev? He ran and pot shotted the whole night. 11 punches a round. That’s exciting? Yet after two lackluster HW performances he’s the most exciting HW? You people disgust me. Getting turned on by loud trash talk, buldging muscles and cornrows. Where’s the substance??? Please Vitali fight the coward Haye and KO him so these morons will shut up.

  • Doctor says:

This is the gauntlet being thrown down. This is better than the last occasion when Haye failed to deliver.

Vitali is saying it as it is, I want your belt and I will take it. He will train so well for his last fight that this will be the most dangerous opponent Haye will ever face. Haye will know this and it places him in the difficult situation of having no way out, as he could the last time.

Haye isn’t frightened of the Klitschkos but they are the stumbling block to his taking the HW by storm. He failed to do that, Adamek is getting more notice than Haye and rightly so, lots more going on.

Vitali will have no problem with Haye and knows it. Haye will go through the same rhetoric as all the others, lots of I will do this and that, and then he will lose, probably by TKO after all the damage he is going to take.

Then it gets worse, he will have to face Wladimir to get back in the running and that will end in a KO, so 2010 not looking to good for Haye.

    Ruiz V Haye who cares?

  • Uncle Ewald says:

Vitali Klitschko can bestow upon boxing a last great act of deliverance before retirement by removing David Haye from the ranks of Heavyweight boxing by humiliating defeat. Haye the polluted mouthed pretender will not be missed and Vitali will have put away a low down boxing impostor that heavyweight boxing can effortlessly do without.

  • aj says:

haye tko easly. Did no one see the face of vk after Kevin Johnson and kevin barly touched him and vk looked like he had done 12 rounds with tyson vk is to old and batterd now he needs to give it up now cuz haye is going to knock him out.

  • rick says:

The so called boxing robots are just too big, strong and skilled for Haye. The jabs alone would hurt Haye badly. Haye had mentioned that Barrett’s jabs felt like a cruiser’s right hand punches – then what will the K’s jabs feel like?

Each opponent that Vitali fights, start to talk big before the fight. As soon as the fight starts, they do not produce results in the ring. The same will happen with Haye. There are also several H/W contenders who would KO Haye.

  • bruno says:

Haye has already said that what is the point if he doesn’t go after the Klitchkos. He is a bold fighter and even Roach says it is winnable for Haye. So they both want the same thing. Lets hope that there is no stupid contract now that stipulates that Haye has to fight the whole Klitchko family twice if Vitali loses. Yes we all know he has to get passed the clinching man, hopefully he will do the world a favour and knock him into retirement along the way.

  • jonesy1981@live.co.uk says:

how can anyone say haye has a weak chin he has never been knocked out? he was stopped on his feet once!!!!most exciting hw
at the moment i have no doubt he can beat both jabbing robots its just a shame theres no one in the division to match his talent speed and power all the things you need to be a great boxer ie tyson ali i rest my case!

  • maxx says:

you guys who think Haye can beat the K bros you are either racist or stupid or both. Haye ran all night from Valuev who is is slow as molasses. You think he wants to engage with the K bros. How many american hweights talk trash before fight the klitschkos then showup and run. Haye will do the samething. come guys, watch the sport and learn….

  • KAL 'EL says:

Of course Vitali will retire after fighting David Haye. David “Hayemaker” Haye will knock Vitali out of the fight game forever after they fight!!! Vitali is a very smart man and recognizes when he’s beat and can’t compete with a superior fighter!!!

  • lex_fugitive says:

Don’t both Klitschko brothers have doctorates? I can’t see anyone other than his brother being able to even make it interesting with Vitali. He could make millions without any real competition. However, with his history of injuries, I have to assume he’s making the right choice. Now, Wladimir can unify all the belts, so that’s good.

  • Shane says:

Cadillacin979 must be a comic…if not, maybe he/she should be, cause im still laughing

  • gio says:

lmao, I see klitschko knocking this bum out. Haye’s best chance is to run around the ring and try to score a punch here and there and hope the judges are blind so he can get the decision.

  • Percy Shelley says:

Somewhat ironic that vitali, looking to the horizon, sees only a wasteland without talent that is the heavyweight division, as if longing for at least a lennox to come back and give him a good torment and make the profession worth while again.

  • Cadillacin979 says:

The Hayemaker will reign supreme in the Heavyweight division.
    Down goes the Klitschko Sisters!!!
