Vazquez Jr. stops Sonsona

By Dave Lahr: Well, so much for former WBO super flyweight champion Marvin Sonsona (14-1-1, 12 KOs). He was beaten tonight by Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. (18-0-1, 15 KOs) in a 4th round stoppage loss for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico. I knew this was going to happen.

Sonsona was just too wide open defensively, not powerful enough for the super bantamweight weight class and ended up taking a royal beating after the 1st round. Vazquez ended the one-sided bout with left to the body. The bout was officially stopped at 2:01 of the 4th. Looks like Sonsona is going to have to diet back down to super flyweight.

In other action, cruiserweight prospect Carlos Negron (8-0, 6 KO’s) stopped Rudy Ashworth (5-8, 1 KO) in the 1st round. The bout was halted at 2:59 of the 1st round. Negron, 6’6,” competed in the 2008 Olympics for Puerto Rico, but was defeated by Yerkebulan Shynaliyev of Kazakhstan.

My respect for all the brave and exellent phillipino fighters,
but this time once again the quality of puertorrican boxing is
demonstrated in Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. showing that Puerto Rico is
land of champions and continues to be the greatest per capita in
    planet earth.

    Saludos from P.R.

I hope Sonsona learns to value discipline from this point onwards. According to the reports, he seemed to be dragging his feet in terms of starting training, his coach even had to fetch him in General Santos to make sure he got to San Francisco. One who wants to be world champion has got to have the heart, mind and discipline of a champion. When a fighter is on the world stage – he’s up against the best. In the case of Vasquez, Jr., he had all the advantages of a former champion for his trainer. True, boxing skills are never inherited, but they can be imparted. It’s all up to the trainee to absorb and internalize the many tricks of the trade. So, bottomline: whether Sonsona wins another world championship at a higher weight is, well, UP TO HIM. A trainer is only as good as his student. While Donaire may be a topnotch trainer – it’s Sonsona, not him – who has to trade punches with an opponent.

So, Marvin – your success or failure rests in your hands…literally. It’s all up to you!

im filipino and to tell you the truth, philippines wouldnt even care about this. they’d hear about this news and wouldnt hurt. they only care about manny pacquiao, trust me.

  • Edgar Cintron says:

It’s not that Sonsona can’t fight at that weight class, it’s that Vazquez Jr. just take after his father… “He is another Puerto Rican Prospect!”

  • Puerto "very" Rico says:

I was there and it was a great fight. And the undercards were perfect – short 4 round fights and two full 12 rounds. The balance keeps you busy and they all went down fast. Sonsona has a bright future but he needs to understand this was Vázquez night no matter what. That blow to the ribs showed he was the one with big flaws (he was stating that Wilfredo makes lots of mistakes in interviews). And sincerely Vazquez connected him with straight rights to the face. I don’t know if Sonsona was intimidated by the coliseum environment but I found him out of focus or timing. Oh well, Puerto Rico celebrates today!!

  • ElCondor says:

Don’t rule out a fighter who loses, there’s always another fight out there. Pacquiao got knocked out twice as a flyweight, but look where he’s now. It’s time for Marvin to go to Wild Card for more boxing lessons. He’ll be back.

Enhorabuena, Puerto Rico! Nuestros hermanos boricuas tiene mucha razon para celebrar esta noche. Y Wilfredo – enhorabuena, has dado un gran honor a PR!

Filipino fan of boxing, aunque debo saludar el mejor peleador esta noche. Nos veamos otra vez, hermanos boricuas. Saludos calurosos.

  • Gene' says:

Goes to show, he really needs a good discipline in his training program. Anyway, good luck to his next fights. Lessons learned, he is still young.

  • Kid Boxing says:

Sad lost for Sonsona, he’s still young anyway. Congatulations to Vasquez and to all the Puerto Ricans!
