Shaw thinks Khan is afraid of Maidana and Timothy Bradley

By Eric Thomas: In an article at The Sun American promoter Gary Shaw, the promoter of World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, says “I tried to make a fight between Amir Khan and Timothy Bradley. His Promoters Golden Boy Promotions said ‘absolutely no chance, no way.’ Shaw went on to say “The reason why Amir Khan refuses to fight [WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos] Maidana is he’s scared. He’s scared of Timothy Bradley.”

Khan, 23, is looking to be matched against boxing great Juan Manuel Marquez in a fight that would take place on May 15th. Golden Boy Promotions, the company that promotes Khan, is looking to make a huge star out of him and want to put him in with the best known fighter available for Khan’s debut fight in the United States. You certainly can’t blame Golden Boy Promotions for wanting to do that.

It’s actually the smart thing to do. Khan probably gains little by fighting Maidana or Bradley, neither of which is well known by casual boxing fans. The money wouldn’t likely be there for either of those fights as compared to a bout against the well known Marquez. The unfortunate fact of the matter is Marquez is a better known fighter than Maidana and Bradley, which explains the reason why Golden Boy is going after a fight with Marquez rather than Bradley or Maidana.

At the same time, Bradley and Maidana, because of their size and power, would present a real threat that they could wind up beating Khan. At 23, Khan is still growing as a fighter and probably doesn’t belong in the same ring with fighters like Bradley and Maidana at this point in his career.

Khan still has a lot of time to grow and in two or three more years, he could be ready for tough challenges like the kind that Maidana and Bradley present, but right now this is the wrong time to be putting a green fighter like Khan in with those kinds of fighters. Marquez is a different case. Marquez is older at 36, hasn’t looked good since moving up to the lightweight division last year, is smaller than Khan, and is coming off a poor performance against Floyd Mayweather last year in a 12 round losing effort in September.

Shaw says “I believe Amir Khan is a fraud. I’ll believe it until he fights Tim Bradley.” Shaw may be waiting awhile for that to happen. Golden Boy is hoping to match Khan up with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future, and will be looking to put Khan in with another older fighter like Zab Judah after the Marquez bout.
Khan captured the WBA light welterweight title last year with a lopsided 12 round decision over champion Andriy Kotelnik in July. Most recently, Khan destroyed Dmitri Salita in a 1st round TKO in Khan’s first defense of his WBA title. The WBA want Khan now to defend his title against WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana, a fighter with huge power and a high pressure offense.

Just incase you didnt notice JERRY it was Mitchell who beat The great mighty Prescott, Mitchell is a white fighter…..
Khan got blasted by Prescott….Ur just a sad racist, and I actually feel sorry for your pathetic ass.

  • Abz says:

Reading the comments of waheed nawaz does make me laugh. It clearly shows he knows nothing about boxing. What 4 weight divisions is Khan going to conquer? The guy is afraid to fight the mandotary opponent Maidana, he is either going to vacate the belt or its going to get stripped off him. If thats him conquering the weight division good on him. They avoiding fighters like tim bradley, maidana and talking about fighting mayweather. He fought Barrera past his sell by date, kotelnik c-class fighter, salita never heard of him before. Now Marquez a ring warrior but another old fighter. How many fights does khan want before he fights the big guns in they prime.

What are you going on about, where have i banged on about my boxing abilities you stupid man? I actually said that even with my little bit of boxing ability that i was confident that i could do the same to Salita! I made that statement to shut up some of the Khan brown nosers that were saying what an achievement beating Salita was and as for offering people out, i was being called all sorts for no good reason and asked the guy if he’d like to be so personal in person so zip it!

Looks like were in complete agreement about Bradley. I mean so he dough an undefeatd Paterson well khan fought Salita who was 30-0-1 haha

  • anon says:

true mr haye lesnar vs fedor aint happening.

ufc bought out pride and now own it.

i dont watch the wrestlers just the bangers anderson silva paul daley etc.

its not that i think bradley is no good i just think hes overated a little.

But so is amir but id pick amir to beat bradley

  • David Haye says:

But didnt bradley want to fight JMM and now Khan got him he is going after a smaller man. double standards.

But damn Khan is by far the most talked fighter out there at the moment i dont think he minds that..

Also Hatton was by ar the best light welterweight for the last half of the norties..

i rate Bradley but i really doubt it if he will do well in any other weight class then LWW, look at his height and body frame.

and UFC sucks the best fight the best then what they fight each other more than 10 times it sucks you want to remember big events and big events happen once in a while just like boxing. and also UFC has about 50 different companys pride,UfC ect and the best cant reay fight the best like everyone wants to see Fedor v Lesner but we all know that aint happnin..

  • anon says:

would love too see if amir would cope with the pressure what hatton brings to the table.

kahn maybe too fast for him thou and you?

  • MrFlint says:

@Anonymous-How do think Khan would do fair against Hatton?

nice words for juilet 9 my freind lol.

    @king kahn

nice to see somebody else who knows bradleys antics mate.
Idiots who hype him up as the next pac man are deluded.

Bradley hasnt been tested at all he couldnt stop witter the quitter butted a blown up nate cambell then fought another undeafeated fighter in peterson what people dont see is peterson him self has only got a 46% ko rate the same as dezert orchid not exactly a dangerous opponent??

Then try and slate kahn for taking a fight with a legend in marquez ha ha ha

Kahn will wipe the floor with bradley.

Bradley vs salita give him a test lmao

  • KenD says:

    @Don@London,
Will you ever stop banging on about your boxing abilities, you’ll be offering people out again next.

  • josh1 says:

    @9 de julio

your still speaking english, and why do you keep mentioning margaret thatcher like she is a national hero? sucks to be an ineducated argentnian peasant.

  • King Khan says:

    Vinboy

hahaha that’s a funny one guess he just likes hyping his overrated fighters!! Lacy was hyped up and now so is Bradley!!

  • King Khan says:

Hmm I wonder how many of these haters giving Amir grief were saying all this crap when Bradley chose a blown up 37 year old Nate campbell to fight instead of Devon? And even then he had to use his head.. So I guess Bradley ain’t as fearless as people make up.. So people shutup and give Amit a break Bradley has never faced anyone with Marquez class!!

  • Anonymous says:

    Bernard

most boxers do a bit of ducking.

if you was kahn would you fight maidana for peanuts????

Or fight a legend for big dollars???

    do the maths.

  • Bernard says:

People who know anything will give Khan the break he wishes for when he gets in the ring with the likes of Maidana and not befor.

  • Anonymous says:

    @oli

bradley ducked devon to fight a blown up nate cambell.
Hattons been in the ring with pac and floyd !!
Dont underestimate the hitman bradley is no where near the same calibre of fighter as pac and floyd is.

Bradley is a good all round boxer that is it he hasnt got dynamite in his fists and will be exposed as soon as he fights top oposition.

People critisize kahn for fighting salita !
I would question bradley for facing another light puncher in peterson another overated boxer from america just like salita was .

I do agree with you with the ufc system make the best fight the best to see who is number 1 per weight class.

  • Oli says:

I get annoyed when idiots say…”Tim Bradley is overated he wouldnt beat Hatton or Khan”. Tim Bradley WANTS to fight both of them but NEITHER of them want to fight Tim Bradley and seem to have excuses for not wanting to. So you tell me what is Tim Bradley supposed to do about that? Hes not the one who doesnt want to fight, so why criticize Tim Bradley, surely you should be criticizing those two instead?

Say what you want about Bradley, but hes won 2 belts at 140, deserves the chance to fight good fights now, and is absolutely prepared to fight ANYONE they put in front of him, unlike khan and hatton who get snobby, make demands and have many different excuses for not facing this or that guy.

Id like to see a UFC type system where fighters dont have a say or a choice, where one body makes all the fights and you have to fight whoever you are matched against. Then we will see who the best is the strongest survive and the cowards have nowhere to hide

  • mean says:

Khan knows he has a chin made of glass and maidana will shatter it thats why khan wont fight maidana

  • jmm says:

dinamita’s gonna destroy kahns career ,, i cant believe he wiont man up and fight maidana,, hes 2 stupid 2 realize thats the easier fight ,, dinamitas gonna school kahn,, tim bradders aint all that ,, ricky will whup him without a doubt

  • don@london says:

    @ asif
Agree with that comment, still think that Khan should take the Maidana fight if anything just to prove the critics wrong, one of those being myself! Very few people doubt his boxing ability, i for one think he’s extremely talented but he does need to fight a puncher. He said himself that the Prescott KO was due to mistakes he made and that he’s now rectified those mistakes so he should soundly handle Maidana if thats true! There is genuine reason behind this criticism and Amir’s team really are doing very little to silence the doubters!

  • asif says:

TBH khan is not ready for bradley yet, i mean would you say pacman had a chance against floyd before he joined roach! Now khan has joined GBP we will see he faces a step in class. If khan is the real deal he will be a superstar. I would say after 3 or 4 major fights khan should fight bradley. Bradley is a really slick boxer and is probably the best jr welterweight now pacman has left. But when you look at khan he is so much more potential because crazy speed is a natural talent and boxing skills are earned through blood, sweat and tears.

  • don@london says:

    @ Harry

Im afraid you’ve got your times mixed up mate, it was Khan who was sparked in 54 seconds against Prescott and Salita was overwhelmed around a minute and a half into the first but finished the fight on his feet. That fight was a prime example of how the public are being conned into rating Khan. I am super confident myself that i could do the same to Salita and im just a roofer with 8 amateur fights experience!

  • batista says:

ZKO youv’e just made the most retarted comment of the year!FACT- Haye is an undisputed, unified Cruizer weight champ & went on to win a Heavyweight title – WITH ONLY 24 FIGHTS ON HIS DAMN RECORD! He obiviously likes the media circus around him because it sells his fights! Khan is in no comparision with Haye – Hayemaker is on another level! Please go to sleep!

  • John,e says:

He’s been Label a cherrypicker and all the people saying this have be prove right with his avoidance of mainana.

  • Anonymous says:

Why the hell would amir be scared of timothy bradley ???? hes another over hyped american butted a blown up nate cambell and beat another fighter with no ko power in peterson hes decent at best i dont see him beating khan or hatton and maybe even paulie.

maidana can bang but amir will out box him easly.

    give kahn a break people.

  • jo says:

Somebody explain to me how Marquez is an easy fight! it is the toughest of his career, so cut the kid some slack

  • jam says:

Nice to see all the haters crawling out of the council estate woodwork…….

Read and Watch what Freddie Roach says about ‘the science of building a fighter’… this is boxing you don’t just fight the best straight away you build and hype each fight, if khan fights the top three this year who does he fight next, your mama – THINK

im glad you know that cause absolutely no one else did, and seen as your thrid world country(argentina) is better than us why do you speak english. plus you seem to enjoy they english owned sport of f1, and the other games the english developed into real sports rugby, football( in which we will beat you i the world cup, and boxing another sport where we created the modern rules. lifes hard being in the big jail that is argentina.

  • lex_fugitive says:

It would be stupid to throw Khan in there with Maidana or Bradley right now, if GBP thinks he can really be a star. There is more money with Marquez and a match with either Maidana or Bradley wouldn’t expand Khan’s name and marketability. I will still be impressed with Khan if he can get by Marquez.

  • John says:

All u people that are dissing khan keep and doing it coz u lot are muppets dissing him wile e making his money. e not bothered on what u say.

  • jerry says:

funny… coz then so is tim vrad a coward for ducking alexander n goin for a shot campbell???

  • Joker says:

Im getting tired of all the khan drama going on EVERYONE KNOWS HES SCARED I DONT KNOW WHY PEOPLE TRY TO MAKE EXCUSES 4 HIm THATS Y THE BRITAIN PEOPLE DONT LIKE HIM BECAUSE HIS A COWARD NOT BECAUSE HIS SKIN COLOR PEOPLE ARE NOT STUPID THEY HATE COWARDLY FIGHTERS JUST LIKE WHEN HE FOUGHT BARERRA THE FIGHT SHOULDVE BEEN STOP IN THE 1ST RD BECAUSE OF THE LARGE CUT BUT BARERRA WAS ROBBED THEN WHEN BARERRA ASK FOR A REMATCH KHAN COWARDLY DENIED IT HIS A PUNK AND IS SCARED TO GET KO SO SOON AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ZKO says:

Khan reminds me so much of Haye. For a guy that hasn’t proven anything in his weight division, he sure gets a lot of press. In addition, looks like Khan may be as inactive as Haye while in his prime. Me writing about these guys is a waist of time… think I’ll stop.

  • pacman says:

lol u people give me joke!! Khan will amaze u !!! Just watch!

  • Paul says:

Funny…I don’t remember The Baby Bull getting this criticism?

  • Zi says:

Khan even admitted himself that he’s not ready for Bradley. So what’s the point in calling Khan out? Even the great ones like Pac have ducked a few guys. I’d like to see Khan take on Maidana but I think a fight with Marquez is a better fight career-wise at this point. Marquez is nearing his end and has a big name. Maidana is still young and a fight with him can wait.

I’m not even a Khan fan. But sometimes business comes first.

  • angel says:

khans being set up for another fall and it wont be long now until someone knocks him out.

  • inkspired says:

bradley has power ? where ? in his ass ? cos it aint in his fists !
bradley is another hyped up US champ, he got a break against witter and took a split decision, his defences against cherry and holt mean nothing as they are only ‘b’ class fighters who if in against top oppesition faulter.
bradley is lucky he hasnt been in against the likes of hatton, marquez, alexander maidana and ortiz for the fact he’ll come up short.
he can box credits due there but i think khan would tag him early and take his belt.
maidana’s a proper banana skin for khan.he can bang, granted.but if khan can get to him early with his speed and avoid the looping overhand shots he can take marcos out.
when will tyhe writers do their homework….check your facts boys before u overhype.

  • Harry says:

Khan is not scared of anyone people seem to forget that he is only 24 and is choosing his fights carefully since his loss to Prescott who has shown how lucky he was by losing two fights since then. Khans previous fight against Salita who was suppose to be the next best thing having been unbeaten was put to bed within 54 seconds of the 1st round to be honest i think Khan would beat Maidana Marquez and Bradley no problems he will have too much power and be too quick for them the only two challengers in this welterweight division for him is the Pacman and Mayweather and I dont see him fighting any of these in the near future.

  • stu says:

if, in 3 or 4 years khan hasn’t met those two guys in the ring…then he probably avoided them. people are too quick to criticise. you can only fight one opponent at the time.

  • skidmark1975 says:

khan still looks like a boy fighting men, if anything the “world champion” should be giving prescott a rematch !

  • suga says:

as stated khan is only 23, so maybe he will eventually fights all this guys. he’s getting stronger as he’s going up and older. he might be the next knockout one punch artist. that salita drop cannot be ignored. gbp is too cunning to invest on khan, they see he has potentials.

  • testicularfortitude says:

Marquez, if he trains right, may still have a good couple of fights left, especially moving back down a click from that overreach with floyd, perhaps a revisit to the baby bull performance which should , if so, introduce amir to a whole world of hurt…

  • ryan says:

Whoever wrote this article sounds like he works for khans p.r department i mean bloody hell!Lol.The way certain people talk will be waiting till khans about 40 before he’s ready for a top opponent!Seriously how long are certain people gonna go on making excuses for him?!

  • Dizzle says:

Bottom line is you can’t hold a title and then b**** out because you’re not ready. If Khan was not a title holder, I would have no issue with him avoiding Maidana because there would be plenty of time for that fight later on. But when you’re holding a belt, you have a responsibility to act like a champion and that means, fighting your mandatory and fighting the best no matter what.

  • inch says:

    khan has a week chin

  • Brandon says:

Khan is weak… He needs to man up! Bradley needs someone to step up… I can’t wait to see Tim get another victory! He will beat Khan, Maidana, Hatton, Paulie, Marquez, Alexander, Ortiz. Bradley has beaten everyone they put in front of him, and he deserves a HUGE PAYDAY!!! Let’s do this Bradley!!!

  • Oli says:

Its astonishing the way Khans career has been managed. The best name on his record is kotelnik a C-class fighter. Yet now they constantly throw names like marquez and even mayweather up. It seems and they believe hes already too good to bother facing any good B class fighters like Ortiz, or maidana or too good to bother with genuine world class world champions like timothy bradley, but HOW on earth can they know this! and what makes them think such things? Why hes getting the marquez fight in the first place is beyond me. But that fight soley depends on how much marquez has left in the tank and how much younger bigger and stronger khan is than the lightweight marquez. IF he manages to come thru that fight, u can bet your house on it, that names like maidana and bradley and anyone else tough at 140 will NEVER get a shot because all they will say is..we are too big a name for you now or we only want P4P names now!

  • Joey says:

Honestly Gary Shaw is right Khan is avoiding Maidana who is a mandatory challenger. Second just like I commented in another story Khan is also scared of Timothy Bradley. Bradley would show Khan boxing 101 and probably knock him out. Well now he has decided to fight Marquez. Who came up with that idea was it him or Golden Boy promotions? Khans style is nothing néw to Marquez and no Khan is not Pacquiao just Because he puts his hands up when hes hurt just like PAC. Roach can train Khan Like Pac but he is no where near that level. Marquez will show Khan why he is one of best in the business. Khan just fight Mallinagi so u can lose a decision rather than by KO. Just a suggestion.

  • Oli says:

Gary shaw isnt the only one who believes this. Amir khan is clearly a protected fighter looking to manipulate and carefully select his way to the top. Put him in the ring with Bradley or maidana and this circus comes to a stop now. But golden boy would lose their money if that happened so they are not going to risk allowing it. But Shaw is right Khan isnt the great fighter hes ridiculously being built up as and hes little more than a fraud.

What will probably happen is this…they will carry on matching khan against soft opposition or faded old stars who are too small to trouble him, khan will rack up these wins. Meanwhile Bradley will be thrown in with the tough hard fighters nobody else wants to dare fight, eventually Bradley will lose, after which Khan will turn round and say “Bradley you have lost so we are not fighting you”.
