Robert Guerrero pulls out of Katsidis fight – News

By Sean McDaniel: Super featherweight Robert Guerrero (25-1-1, 17 KO’s) has pulled out of his March 27th fight with World Boxing Organization lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis (26-2, 21 KO’s), according to news from ESPN. Guerrero’s wife is ill and he wants to be with her. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer will now look for a substitute opponent for Guerrero.

One fighter to look at is former lightweight champion Juan Diaz, who through his manager yesterday, accepted Katsidis’ earlier challenge for a rematch. However, it’s up to HBO if they are willing to accept Diaz as a replacement opponent, as he’s lost three out of his last five fights in the past two years. If not Diaz, there are a number of good fighters that would be excellent replacement opponents such as Kevin Mitchell, Ali Funeka, Anthony Peterson, John Murray, and Marco Antonio Barrera.

The undercard of this fight matches World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) against undefeated Victor Cayo (24-0, 16 KO’s). Unless a good opponent is found for Katsidis to fight, the handlers for this fight should place the Maidana-Cayo fight as the main event and put Katsidis on the undercard.

If they put Katsidis in with a top contender like Mitchell, Funeka, Peterson and Murray, there’s a good chance that Katsidis will lose the fight anyway. Katsidis has won his last three fights after being beaten in back to back fights by Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz in 2008. The loss to Diaz was a 12 round split decision.
