Roach plans on having Pacquiao attack Clottey’s body

By Esteban Garduno: Trainer Freddie Roach has come up with another one of his masterful strategies for his pupil WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in his upcoming March 13th fight against Joshua Clottey. In an article at Fight Fan, Roach says “He’s [speaking of Clottey] got a good chin and so forth, but nobody has tested his body as much as we well. People with good chins don’t always take it into the body.” You think? Thank you for telling me something I don’t know, Freddie. As far as I can tell, Clottey was already exposed for having problems taking shots to the body in his fights against Antonio Margarito and Miguel Cotto.

If you watch both of those fights, Clottey slowed way down after Margarito and Cotto started pounding him in the body with heavy hooks. Clottey then spent the remainder of the fight glued to the ropes doing a poor imitation of Muhammad Ali’s rope-a-dope. It would be a complete of waste of time for Pacquiao to even try to take Pacquiao out with head shots, because not only can Clottey take a great shot without showing any signs of being hurt, but he keeps a high guard at all times and it’s hard to penetrate with shots.

Clottey’s midsection is usually wide open and an inviting target for punches. This really the only choice Pacquiao will have if he wants to land anything in the fight. It’s nice that Roach made us all aware of what Pacquiao is planning on doing, though, as if I already didn’t know. I just hope Pacquiao is astute enough to follow Roach’s program and not start head hunting like he always does.

If he does this, Pacquiao will end up probably hurting his hands and taking a lot of shots in return. Pacquiao has his hands full anyway because he’s so little and not a real welterweight in terms of frame. Oaky, so think Pacquiao is probably going to go head hunting and will ignore Clottey’s midsection after giving him a few weak shots. I’ve never seen any of Pacquiao’s fights where he’s paid much attention to throwing to the body.

Pacquiao will probably stubbornly keep throwing to the head, and basically ignore what Roach is saying to him. This will make the fight harder for Pacquiao and make Roach frantic in his corner. I think Pacquiao will still win the fight, but he’s going to come out of the fight looking more like the loser than the winner. But what can you do? Pacquiao will beat up even if he goes to the body as well.

This is Clottey’s big chance and he’s not going to roll over on his back and kick up his legs like a dog an make it easy for Pacquiao. He’s going to pound Pacquiao and mess up his features probably. Pacquiao might not be able to sing that night. He wanted the fight. Getting beaten up is the byproduct of messing around with a tough fighter like Clottey.

IM ROOTING FOR THE UNDERDOG. GOO CLOTTEY :D USE YOUR “PEE-A-BOO” STYLE TO WIN. for anyone whos studied clottey, can his style really be called peek a boo? is he worthy to have the same fighting stance that mike tyson so gracefully utilized? and the writers comments about pacquiao being stubborn seems… way off :l

  • haku313 says:

TO ALL YOU PACQUIAO FANS WHO THINK HE AND FREDDIE ARE INCAPABLE OF USING STEROIDS

Trainer Freddie Roach said, “The Ruiz fight, James was coming off an injury and we didn’t have enough time for it to completely heal. He wasn’t at one-hundred percent. The steroids didn’t seem to affect him at all, we didn’t even know it was still in his system for that fight. James was just himself in the Ruiz fight. His boxing ability won him the fight.

NOW, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK HE’S NOT DOING THE SAME THING WITH PAC….LMAO

  • bonito says:

Was Freddie Roach coaching or training James Toney when TONEY got caught using steriod . if that is true would Freddie Roach do the same to Pacquiao ??

    Bob James

So much for Khan picking sell by date opponents.he’s fighting malignaggi who while not powerful is still quick and very talented.Hell,I even think he can stop Khan.

As for Esteban/Manuel/Dave’s smear article, this is old news.I even think you’ve criticized Freddy for saying this very thing last week.

  • bob james says:

this joker roach is not some tactical genius when it comes to boxing. he is the king of hand picked opponents. he does it everytime for manny trying to pick off fighters past their sellby date, and he is doing the same now for khan. ask yourself who really caused the superfight to fall through, you know it. team hype are running scared of myweather, i just hope manny gets past clottey so floyd can kick mannys punk as\s

  • Ron says:

Clottey and Winky have a similar defensive shell. Winky’s defense didnt let Mosley land pretty much nothing. If Clottey and Mosley would have ever fought. My money would’ve been on Clottey.

  • jhon foreman says:

No one can beat Many Pacman, he has speed, stamina that last a hundred round, he dont feel pain, thank to his trainer Roach the c roach, his promoter Bob Rumba-rumba Aurum and specially to the person who give him a special super formula to became like superman. No one could beat Pacman, every body are afraid of him, he is unbeatable as long their is no BLOOD TEST. THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THIS SPORT FP

  • Ken d. says:

ringleader is right, I don’t recall Pacquiao derailing the plan they put out, He always listen to the master..

Sometimes he’s doing something else only if the plan is not working.
Then when the time comes they go back to the original plan….

This kind of fighter – master relationship makes them unbeatable..!

  • ringleader says:

“Pacquiao will probably stubbornly keep throwing to the head, and basically ignore what Roach is saying to him. This will make the fight harder for Pacquiao and make Roach frantic in his corner.”

I have never seen this happen. If Pacquiao does go off the track sometimes, it’s only because he,s trying something else, but he is fully aware of what he had to do. In the Cotto fight, between rds. 2 and 3, Roach’s assistant was frantic, almost crying that Pac was deviating from the original plan. Roach put out a hand to him to keep him quiet. He actually told the assistant that Pac knows what he is doing, and to let him play his own game.

The level of trust between Pac and Roach is so deep, if Roach told Pacquiao to drop his hand and let the opponent have his way with Pac for 12 rounds, Pac will do it.

  • Fighter says:

Clottey never faught Forest, or Winky either, so it’s knid of unfair to hold Shane to a higher standard (which, you yourself said Shane has faught tougher guys) but still compare him to a guy who has faught lesser comp, no?

  • Fighter says:

Clottey being a tougher fight than Mosley is QUITE a stretch. The beatiful thing about this, is that we inevidably shall see.

  • Ron says:

I understand Clottey hasnt fought fighters like Shane has. Clottey has never been hurt and almost out like shane was against Forrest either. Shane has lost twice to Forrest, twice to Winky and once to Cotto. Recently Shane has looked good beating Margarito but his game plan was to throw hard shots and clinch to keep Marg from releasing his non stop punches. It was a perfect game plan to win but prior to that Shane looked awful in beatin Mayorga being a close fight until the knockout. A close fight with Mayorga! Clottey is a tougher fight for Mayweather then Mosley.

  • Fighter says:

Bob. I see your point. But how much money was in it for him, as apposed to other fights. These guys put pressure on their bodies every time they do this. They have to make every one count. If they stand to make 1million versus 5…do the mathe. Plus, if his legacy will be greater by picking the fights people want, again, no-brainer. Berto, Sergio, Williams, are all better considerations for Shane, as aposed to guys like Clottey, and Malianaggi. Which I do not think it was accidental for Bob Arum to have those particular two guys on his mind for Manny. DO YOU REALLY THINK PAULIE CAN BEAT PACQUIAO?!

  • Fighter says:

1.Clottey is a tough fighter, nobody questions that. He simply has yet to enter into the elite levels yet for a reason. He had his chance against Cotto, someone who was pretty much written off as a damaged fighter after his loss to the cheater. If you look at who Clottey has fought (win or loss) you cannot compare that to Mosleys life in the sport. You did not see Clottey fighting the same (or near) level of competition as Shane. Zab is gifted, but fade early if he does not score something spectacular, (maybe mentally weak), Cotto came off a tough loss (cheated or not), The cheater is a hard guy, but a very come forward type fighter. I don’t have to mention Shanes past, because it speaks for itself, I don’t care how old he is, he’s still knocking game apponents out, even at 38 (not counting the idiot Mayorga).
    2. When I say that Manny’s overrated, I mean that he is nowhere near the worlds p4p best to lace them up. The best fighter Manny faught was Cotto, and he was not the fastest guy ever. Again, look at the records, and who the REAL best guys in this thing have faught, look at Williams, look at Shane, look at Mayweather obviously, look at Clolazzo (even though he got robbed against Berto AND Hatton)….Then look at Manny. Morales, JM Marquez..again, not the most gifted people in the world, you must admitt.

  • Bob says:

yea i recall mosley pulling out of a clottey fight

  • Ron says:

Clottey is a guy that mostly every welterweight didnt want to fight. Now everyone saying Clottey is like a warmup fight. Some say Pacquiao is overated and then they say Pacquiao is going to dominate Clottey. How can an overated fighter dominate Clottey? I dont think Clottey is an easy fight for anyone. I also think Mosley at 38 with 1 year and a half off is an easier fight then Clottey.

  • Fighter says:

Mayweather has his hands full, but he will still get more respect if he lost to Shane, than if Manny loses to Clottey, the underdog. I think that Clottey will lose, even though, there’s always a chance for anything to happen. Nobody thought Buster Douglas, A. Tarver, V. Forest, Glen Johnson, etc could do it, but they upset some people. I will still root for Clottey, because, I just can’t stand Pacquiao THAT much. There are way better boxers out ther, but he choses his fights well, and is coddled by Arum. Unlike Floyd who at least tried for a fight with Mosley, Manny wanted no part of it. If he was already in negotiations with Clottey, that’s his own faul for taking somebody he thimks will be an easy win. And Cowboys stadium…COME ON!! Thanks Manny, this is great for boxing. This is some starvin assed no frills sh-t! Not Foxwoods, not Jersey, not Manilla, or something, but…Jerry Jones? Come on now!

  • Fighter says:

I think Manny is way overrated, thanks to those in the fight game who want to promote and make money. Honestly, I think Clottey will lose this one, only because he’s not quick enough, and he has not enough head movement. However, to replace that, the writer noted a good point, Clottey does do a good job at touching his temples. He can’t lay on the ropes with Manny, he’s too active. Manny picked this fight for a reason. It’s as close to a sure thing as he could get. He looks like the second rate fighter, taking a warm up fight, while Mayweather figts a top guy.

  • theanticorruptor says:

clottey will be weight drained in this fight because he works extremely too hard just to make 147lbs…he should just move up the 154 where that’s a little closer to his weight when he’s hydrated..

  • marcos says:

1 thing we allll know..even manny fans that pacman lieve him self open for head shots wen he coming in..now wat the hell will happen if he goes for body shots?he gana get knock out..manny is a head hunter allways been..and the reason why cuz he fast..in order to hit the body like antonio and cotto did..u must get close..and if u go bck to those 2 fight..look at how manny times they got hit in the face…is not easy man.the man is nothing to play with..im a cotto fan..but i saw cotto loose that fight 4real..manny think he cnt be touch..

  • ERIC says:

one thing i havent noticed about pacman is faking coz attacking the body need faking first.

  • ERIC says:

it will be a good move for pacman, since this will save his energy to later take Clottey down. But mind u Clottey is big & can take pain.

  • ........... says:

I’m not a nuthugger and don’t believe all this hype around Pacquiao but this is a biased article. Clottey is a good fighter but he tends to slow down and stand there taking shots. Pacquiao will outwork Clottey or get him by late stoppage.

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Clottey has been in the fight game for a minute. I say he does the Vincent Vega and rides back to Ghana with a belt and a boat load of money. You know what they say about dreamers. All they do is sleep. Something tells me this is going to be another wipe out victory for the Man Ram….

  • manuel says:

Because of Clottey’s excellent guard, Manny might be enticed to go and trade punches just to make Clottey open up his guard. If this happens, it will be a very exciting fight.

  • The_Mediator says:

What fights are you talking about?

Clottey’s punch output was reduced after the 4th round against Margarito because he had injured hands and couldn’t throw or block without pain. Infact he hardly threw a punch in the 5th round because he was adjusting to the pain. He was moving around effectively though, in the 10th round he actually boxed on his toes.

Cotto–Clottey, Clottey spent little time on the ropes. He had Cotto on the run and in retreat for the last four rounds.

Clottey’ body is not that wide open, he hunches himself over so very little is exposed. He also moves his elbows quickly up and down to stop body punches. Judah and Corrales tried that body attack on Clottey and look where that got them. He’ll counter you with straight rights and uppercuts if you try that body attack strategy.

  • Sean P says:

    Thanks.

I think body shots could come in useful against Clottey early on. When i have seen him he fights with a very high guard, so maybe pacquiao could sneak afew in early. But pac-man will go ‘head-hunting’ later on and will probably knock him out.
