Roach: “Mosley will be beaten by Floyd”

By William Mackay: In an article at the Telegraph, trainer Freddie Roach says that he thinks that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will beat Shane Mosley if they do end up fighting. Right now, the fight is up in the air because Mayweather hasn’t said a thing for almost a week after the contract was signed by Mosley for a fight on May 1st, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Roach, the trainer for Manny Pacquiao among many others, says “If Floyd does fight Shane, that’s a good fight, and one I’d like to see.

But Mosley will be beaten by Floyd. Mosley does well with guys who will come at him. He has trouble with guys who move. Mayweather wins that fight. But Mosley is a brave guy. If for any reason Mosley wins, Manny would definitely fight him. We’ll take that fight.” If Mosley wins that fight, there would be little choice for Pacquiao to take the fight against Mosley. What Roach says isn’t really earth shattering news by any means.

That’s the only fight out there for Pacquiao, unless he wants to fight light middleweight Paul Williams. Of course, I could see Pacquiao continuing to fight Top Rank fighters and choosing to fight Yuri Foreman in a move to collect another paper title. However, I don’t see that as being worth anything, just as the fight against Joshua Clottey seems to be a waste of time for Pacquiao. The only real option for Pacquiao is a fight against Mayweather or Mosley, and if Shane knocks off Mayweather, then that’s the fight that Pacquiao has to take.

Mosley will lose a boring 12 rd UD
I wish he would win.The only way for Shane can beat him is if Floyd Grows some b.alls.Toe to toe Floyd would lose.

  • Damian Joseph says:

Personally i’m not a big fan of Mayweather, i think his a top boxer but definately not one of the greats. Main reason being his ducked too many good fighters over the years.. it’s good to see his now chosing to fight Mosley, which i think he’ll win but wouldn’t have stood a chance 5 years ago. There’s a reason why his undefeated, he chooses his fights very carefully, that’s not what being a champion is about, to be the best you have to beat the best and he plain hasn’t done it in his career.. would love to see Mosley get up in this fight but agree it’ll most likely be a close decision win to Mayweather. Finally i wouldn’t be surprised if there was a clause in the mosley.mayweather contract stating mosley would have to give mayweather a rematch if he lost, so don’t expect to ever see mosley vs pacquaio (unfortunately). peace

i like roach, but i hope he’s wrong!

  • lex_fugitive says:

There is no way Manny will fight the winner of Mayweather-Mosley. Manny is hoping Cotto can beat and take Yuri’s title. If Cotto does, than Manny will win another paper title by fighting Cotto at another catch-weight of probably 148. If Cotto loses Manny will probably retire or fight some more B level fighters for Top Rank. No way Manny will ever fight anyone that moves around the ring.

The Fight’s On! Floyd Mayweather Has Signed to Face Shane Mosley

  • Lord Bunfu says:

i think FMJ wished he was fighting Pacman now with the huge money than taking a risk with SSM. he’s got little options now and his cup is really full. he knows he’s got a problem which is , he’s not as agile and swift as before and moreover his retirement has really dipped his confidence.

its true that he’s not fought any of the top welterweights now and really needs to prove himself. if he really signs the agreement, then i think its a 50-50 between him and SSM.

dont forget that SSM is aging and the only reason he beat Magarito is that Magarito has only one style which is agression and he leaves himself too open. any good welterweight will beat magarito.

  • D says:

I disagree with Roach or anyone else on this sight. Shane WILL beat Floyd. Simple as that!

  • the man of steel says:

Jason, r u retarded? U r right about shane being vulnerable 2 the overhand right, but floyd hits about as hard as ur grandma. Shane will walk through all his shots, his name should b mayfeather cuz that’s how soft he hits

  • goodgrief says:

maybe fmj wont sign because mosley is not a pay per view attraction

  • Sauna says:

Floyd is just making Mosley wait. This fight is on the books next week. Floyd has always wanted to fight this dude. He just wasn’t willing to give him a shot after he called Mosley out twice and he didn’t respond. Back then for Shane, it was eveerything thing to lose and at the lower weight class PBF was recking dudes for real. None of the top dogs wanted a date with PBF before Welterweight. (See below)

In 1999, when Floyd Jr was 130lb champion he called out 135lb champion Shane Mosley to fight him in what would’ve been a super fight, Mosley declined!! Fast forward to 2005 after the Henry Bruselles fight a WBC Eliminator to determine who would fight Arturo Gatti next, Floyd was asked by Larry Merchant who he would like to fight next, amongst the names Floyd recited were Kostya Tszyu, Oscar DeLaHoya and Shane Mosley. Once again no response from Mosley or the others for that matter.

A year later following his 2nd victory over Fernando Vargas, Mosley was asked whether he would face Mayweather by HBO host Larry Merchant, Mosley’s response he needed to get his teeth fixed and go on vacation.. This doesn’t sound like Floyd Jr is ducking Mosley to me!!

  • Ukansodoff says:

Im lookin forward to this fight, Floyd on paper wins for me but you never know, Mosley shocked me a little in the Margarito fight.

What ever the case i just want to see that Chicken Mayweather gets his face smashed up.

I dont understand why William McKay needs to cram little digs at Pacquiao into this article.

  • Mike says:

I think FMJ is worried about Mosley possibly upsetting him and recking his perfect record! I was sticking up for FMJ,saying his reluctance is all a ploy to make as much money as he can and fullfill his “demands” foir the fight. Now I am getting so annoyed at ALL these top fighters who think they are something REALLY special to demand all they want! Guys, you are watering down the sport of boxing and making it a laughing stock to many people who used to watch it all the time! The guys today are worried about making as much money as possible and thats it!!! The guys today cannot even be considered close to as high ranking as the fighters of yesteryear who fought 3 or 4 times as many fights as the guys today! ( Bhop,54 fights/Mosley around 53/Mayweather 40 fights)
The guys a few years ago fought 40-50 fights before they even got a title shot!

  • Mike says:

The more I hear Roaches comments the more I realize the guys a little weird in the head! Manny will win by decision,Manny will win by 9th round knockout.Wait,Manny will win by the 3rd round! LOL Roach is the best trainer ionj the game, blah, blah, blah! Before Manny came along Roach was just another former fighter who became a trainer and had some success with a few fighters. All of a sudden Manny comes into his life and Roach is the best trainer there is?! lol
Roach has not helped produce even close to as many world champions as Emanual Stewart,Eddy Fudge and many other trainers, even when comparing these other legendary trainers ages to Roaches age now. Now when Roach says anything many say,”yep,Roach is the best trainer so listen to him?!”

  • Mike says:

One major difference between FMJ and Mosley is Mosley is always exciting,FMJ,well, you all the the answer to that!
Many seem to forget that the fighters who gave FMJ the best fights were NOT that fast but aggresive who threw alot of punches. Mosley may not be quite as quick as FMJ but he’s still VERY fast and hits ALOT harder! His agression and hunger give him an excellent chance at beating FMJ,wait and see!

  • Jason says:

There is one reason why Mayweather beats Mosley. Shane is wide open for the over hand right..and Mayweather will use it all night long til the fight is stopped. I love Shane Mosley but he can’t get out of the way of the over hand right and Mayweather is a master at throwing that punch.

  • crazy says:

Did FMJ even sign the contract yet? I only read last week that Mosley was the only one to sign. I also read an article that FMJ made sure that there was an immediate rematch clause in the contract. That to me says alot. FMJ is truly worried about this fight. That being said, this is boxing anything can happen on any given night. Remember FMJ usually gets caught with shots early in the fight before he makes adjustments as with Judah, Corley,Castillo and DLH. If Moslay catches FMJ early in the fight FMJ may be in trouble.

  • Phoocquiao says:

    @ Zi.

Boxing doesn’t work like that. Styles make fights. Guy A being better than Guy B who beat Guy C doesn’t mean that Guy A will beat Guy C. Confused?

    Example…

Joe Frazier beat Ali. George Foreman beat Frazier. So be your logic, Foreman should have been able to handle Ali.

But that’s not what happened now, was it?

  • Zi says:

Lol Roach is contradicting himself all over the place. If Floyd will beat Shane and Pac is better than Floyd, why won’t Roach let Pac fight Shane when he was begging for a fight? When you say your guy is the best WW in the world then you should not back down from any challenge.

  • Phoocquiao says:

Shane will win. Didn’t you see the Margarito fight? I mean, the guy can swim without getting wet.

With that said, Naseem Richardson must be the world’s greatest trainer if he can teach a man how to do that.

  • KevvyKev says:

Roach is pretty accurate about his predictions. He’s honest when he said Mosely would be a high risk low money fight for Pacman before fighting Cotto instead. The problem is that if theres a chance you will win, Floyd doesn’t want to fight you. Name a top 3 Welter Weight he fought after his Dela Hoya split decision win. ????

  • cal says:

hahahaha thas hella funny that roach thinks this. i am completely opposite of that. shane will take may out the same way kastyzu took out judah ( wobbley legs as well!! lol)

  • Walters says:

I think you got it Vince V, all fight fans, even PBF fans it seems, want PBF to show some heart before he retires. He’s probably not as fast as he was in say 94′ – 95′.
We all hope he’s got something, anything, to show that he’s still a good, if not great any more, fighter.
If he dodged Pacman, and now dodges SSM. Then I guess he just don’t wanna fight no more.

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Oh yeah………… Floyd, please sign the contract.

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

This is a winnable fight for Shane but my gut tells me he won’t. Shane is fast compared to most boxers in his division but the difference in speed will be evident come fight night & it will make the difference. Shane was best @ a young 135, since then it seems he’s become more one dimensional.

I’m not sure we’ve seen Mayweather’s best. He has the rare ability to turn it up a notch above his opponent, enough to win but never really let it all hang out. Like him or hate him you can’t argue with his ring intelligence.

That beig said it would be a shame for Floyd to reach the end of his career without ever being in a battle that shows the fans his ability & his heart.

As far Pac/Clottey; Pac will beat Clottey, but he won’t beat him up, like he did Cotto.

  • Darryl says:

with Trainer Richardson training Mosley I wouldn’t be surprise if Shane wins this fight hands down.He came up with the strategy for Trinidad vs. Hopkins B HOP schooled him. Same as Mosley did against Margarito.

  • RUBEE STARR says:

I believe if roach really said that he thinks floyd will win this fight,is to try and make floyd believe he has a chance, and of course he does have a chance of pulling this off. even though the chances in my opinion are slim. but again I think this was said to get floyd to sighn.

  • testicularfortitude says:

I respect and admire Freddie but for the reporters and analyst to stop the presses everytime he makes a proclamation is really unfair to the man and his condition…plus taking his statements out of context makes his deliberations, which sometimes is affected by the psychotic side effects of his dopamine agonist, contradictory, tangential and sometimes completely irrational.

  • machine says:

if ever shane/floyd face in the ring, shane will bring it to floyd for sure for aslong shane’s stamina last. he is a warrior who might be cheated by time in this bout.

  • SYmpAThy says:

FREDDIE ROACH TALKS MAD SH^T…IM NOT SUPRISE FROM THIS COMING OUT THIS MOUTH. MOSLEY HAS A HUGE CHANCE OF BEATING MAYWEATHER. SO LETS BE OPTIMISTIC HERE ! ..CMON SUGAR…

  • roy says:

you forgot about what his name? mr cement glove,he fighting manny next floyd looks out of it, its be a betterfight anyway.

  • santiperes says:

If Mosley beats Floyd Jr. , he gets to fight Jr. again because of the immediate rematch clause he agreed to.

  • z says:

I dont know i dont honestly think clottey would have a chance to beat floyd or pac. Who has he beaten that proves he could beat one of the top p4p fighters?

Even if we agree clottey cotto was a draw or a slight edge to clottey its obvious clottey is very comparable to cotto so i dont see him putting forth a much better effort against pac then cotto did. And i dont think it would be much different against floyd.

I agree this was his best option available but that doesnt make it a good fight.

  • Walters says:

    Abit of a pointless article.
    What we all know:
Pacman is on top at the moment, through his stunning victories. “Fighter of the decade”.
SSM & PBF on the next rung down.
and so must determine who gets to fight Pacman.
If PBF pulls out again (then his career is over), & SSM has the shot at the top.
If SSM & PBF do fight, the winner gets a shot at Pacman.

  • Isaac says:

I’m going to the Pac vs Clottey fight…I’m excited! And Mosley vs Money is going to be a great fight….that’s if it happens.

  • KingDaddy6 says:

Mad love and huge respect for you, Master Freddie. But the boxing public is in agreement when they say that this isn’t really going to be a walk in the park for Manny. Realistically speaking, Shave will give Fraud a good fight but, Fraud’s defense and speed (running away) will probably edge him towards a unanimous decision. I would love to see Shane floor him though!

  • southpawchew says:

id be interested in floyd vs clotty p.s. wasnt his fight against marq a lil lopsided in the begining? what fight is worse pac vs clotty or the boaring sad over weight floyd vs jmm?

  • southpawchew says:

i dont see why the clotty fight is that bad, hes in the top 10 and yes he’s promoted by top rank but that just avoids all these promotional disputes. i think it will be a well faught fight. If pac faught burto everyone would think that berto is too green and would ridicule that fight. the olny fight anyone would be happy with is a mayweather mosley winner, and its rediculous at this moment. be happy with what u got which is 2 good fights, okk kiddos?

  • Isaac says:

I agree, a fight with Clottey is not an easy walk on the park. Yet, seeing what pacman did to Cotto is such an easy fashion is hard to think that he might have trouble with Clottey. Mayweather needs to beat Mosley, Pacquiao and then Williams and I will eat every criticism that I ever had of him.

  • z says:

Frankly i do have to ask if floyd were to fight Clottey would you have the same view?

  • ahcaw says:

who cares what this guy thinks everyday? he keeps predicting the things that he wants to see happen.thats all he does.I really just dont care.
