Roach: “If he [Clottey] lays on the ropes, we’re [Pacquiao] going to kill him”

By Jim Dower: Trainer Freddie Roach feels it won’t be much of a problem for Manny Pacquiao to take apart Joshua Clottey in their March 13th fight at the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Arlington, Texas. Roach says in an interview at Fightfan, If he [Clottey] lays on the ropes, we’re [Pacquiao] going to kill him.” Pacquiao will be making his first defense of his newly won World Boxing Organization welterweight title against number #1 ranked Clottey. Pacquiao wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., but the negotiations for that fight stalled and eventually failed after Mayweather requested that random blood tests be taken up to 14 days before the fight.
Clottey’s tendency to cover up on the ropes is one of the main criticisms of him. While some boxing fans are enthusiastic about Clottey’s airtight defense when he’s covering up with his high guard, what they fail to see is that Clottey isn’t active enough offensively to win rounds. He also is vulnerable to get hit in the body, as Miguel Cotto showed in his 12 round decision victory over Clottey last year.
Clottey fought well at times in the Cotto fight, and by the 9th round the fight was still very much up for grabs. However, Clottey then went to the ropes from the 10th until the 12th rounds, covering up and taking shots to the body. Cotto didn’t have much success in getting through Clottey’s guard to land head shots, but he still was able to land quite a bit to the body. And at the same time, with Clottey just covering up and not throwing anything back, he effectively gave the last three rounds to Cotto with his inactivity.
Clottey can’t do this against Pacquiao, because if he’s allowed to throw at will against a fighter that’s mainly just covering up, he’ll throw dozens of shots and likely get a quick stoppage even if Clottey isn’t really hurt. All it takes is for Pacquiao to land 20 or more consecutive shots in the space of a 20 seconds and it’s very possible that the referee will step in and halt the fight to try and protect Clottey from getting drilled to pieces.
Roach goes on about Pacquiao’s power, saying “He’s punching really hard. I wear the body suit, and it doesn’t help that much. He [Pacquiao] kills me. He always had that speed and explosiveness, but the weight just makes it a lot more denser than before.”

You need to move on now. You need to stop talking about Pacquiao, the man you never wanted to fight anyway. Because you don’t want to fight him, you try to fight him with your mouth. rather than walk the walk, you just talk and talk. No, I would, boxers should prove themselves in the ring. If Manny had a personality and hyped his fights up like Mayweather or Hopkins, who should have won it, then he wouldn’t have anything. The truth is Manny only fights washed up fighters coming off a loss or a B level guy like Clottey. Mayweather doesn’t hide behind a trainer. Obviously Mosley is more deserving than Manny, a fighter of a decade doesn’t hide behind his trainer having him tell the top guys that they are “too good”. Mayweather, Hopkins, Mosley they get in the ring with the best. But hey, Manny is a great fighter, especially when you consider how scared he is of the best. Mayweather would rather have his PPVs get 2.44 million buys. The public has crowned Mayweather king, so the media can try and change that, but after May 1, once again it will be shown who the public is willing to spend money to see fight.

If Clottey isn’t a good fighter, then why is Pacquiao fighting him? If he’s “the best” why doesn’t he fight the best? Why not fight Floyd or Mosley?
He is no where near Mayweather’s level and that’s why they didn’t take the tests. Freddie Roach is a coward the same as Bob Arum who only cares about money. That’s why he only gets top rank fighters to fight eachother all the time.
Bob Arum and Freddie Roach are the biggest cowards in boxing but because they are so liked..everyone believes them. Pacquiao had the chance to fight Mosley last year and he walked away and fought Cotto (top rank) the same this year he walked away from Mayweather and chose to fight Clottey (top rank) he picks and chooses his opponents worse than any other fighter. He will not fight Mosley or Floyd because they are both smart, intelligent and fast fighters who will beat him.
why was the pacman being questioned about his achievements we all know that floyd also starts at 106pds and was able to fight at 154pds so he should be on steroids too but now nobody will question floyd because he is an american instead they discredit pacman why is it? Let’s hope for the sake of boxing that Manny beats Clottey and fights the winner of FMJ and SSM. Manny not adhaering to drug testing sucked. I’m not a Manny fan and I’ll admit to losing a lot of money betting against him but he sure is exciting to watch. I’ll be putting money on either FMJ or SSM against him if they get it on. There is no denying though, that he has wiped out everyone he has faced in the last few years whether you think they were weight drained, over the hill, catchweight whatever. He has won and won in style. Clottey is definately not cherrypicking. He is a tough hombre and naturally a much bigger man and if Manny can beat him convincingly, in this fight fan’s view it will only add to his stock. I still think FMJ will box Manny’s ears off and SSM will probably KO him but you just never kn ow with the little filipino. It all adds to the excitement and anticipation. I’ll put AUS $100 on Clottey just coz I won’t bet for Manny. I won’t be dissapointed to lose in the hope that I can put 30 times that amount against him against the winner of the May 1 bout.

I just don’t get it, Mayweather a ducker, Mosley the PED sucker! why? I can’t believe that this two lowsy boxers are fighting, they should be fighting the best fighter which is Pacman.

May 1, are the two top welterweights, and Manny ducked both of them. And the third best, Williams, didn’t have a dance partner, but Manny hand-picked yet another opponent coming off a loss. PacMan-Clottey is indeed a good fight, well worth watching. I’m hoping, though, that Clottey won’t fight like another Ghanaian who gave another Filipino champ hell – Love Allotey. Those who are as old as I am…will remember the Elorde vs. Allotey fight. Clottey’s headbutting habit somehow reminds me of…Love Allotey. So, Manny – watch your head!

Roach is probably right saying that if Clottey stays on the ropes then Pacquiou will capatalise but to use the words ‘kill him’ in the boxing world is very unproffessional and very bad taste.

I personally know Clottey very well, and personally I DO NOT LIKE HIM, he has no loyalty, is a cheap bas…, thats the only reason why hes not using Asante as his trainer, he does no want to pay the 10%. This after years and years of Asante helping him..
BUt even thou i dont like him,, this will turn out to be an easy fight.. Pacman will have a very hard time finding Clottey with anything meaningfull. Clottey also happens to fight southpaws very well..
It ain’t even going to be a close fight. Pacquiao has made the mistake of his life signing up to fight Clottey. It’s sad that Freddy Roach and Manny fans are judging Clottey on previous experiences and have failed to see that Clottey is secretly making changes to his previous fighting style. I’m telling you, the unexpected is about to happen on 03/13/10 and for once in a longtime Pacquiao is about to look amateurish. He’s going to try all his wild punches and attacks but they wouldn’t work. Clottey is going to send it right back at him and exploit his weaknesses, just watch!
