Roach: “This [Pacquiao-Clottey] could be our last fight” if the Mayweather fight doesn’t happen next

By Jim Dower: In a bombshell interview at East Side Boxing’s On the Ropes online program, trainer Freddie Roach revealed that this could be the last fight for his fighter World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Roach says “If Mayweather doesn’t come and fight us next time, this [Pacquiao-Clottey] could be our last one.” Roach is obviously speaking only of Pacquiao, because I can’t see Roach retiring anytime soon.
That would a huge disappointment if Pacquiao does decide that this will be his last bout, because it would leave opponents like Edwin Valero, Mayweather and Paul Williams without the opportunity to test Pacquiao to see if he’s as good as the recent hype that’s been generated about him due to his wins over Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Oscar De La Hoya. As things are looking, it’s highly doubtful that Pacquiao and Mayweather are going to be able to come to any kind of agreement for a fight in the future with Mayweather insisting on random blood tests all the way up to the fight.
And Mayweather is now saying that if his May 1st fight against Shane Mosley does better financially than Pacquiao’s March 13th bout against Clottey, then it means he should get the bigger slice of the revenue for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. That’s just another reason to doubt that there will ever be a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao in the future.
As for the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight, Roach says “Obviously we have to break him [Clottey] down. It’s [a possible knockout for Pacquiao] going to be in the late rounds. It won’t go 12 rounds. We’ll get him at some point along the way. It’s going to be a battle up to that point. I do think the body shots and work rate will be too much. I don’t think Clottey will keep up with us.”
Most of the betting money is being put on Pacquiao to win. Indeed, Clottey appears to be way over his head in this fight despite being ranked by the WBO as the number #1 contender. Oddly enough, Clottey is ranked number #1 despite the fact that he was beaten in his last fight by Miguel Cotto. Usually when a fighter is beaten, they slip in the rankings, but not in the case of Clottey.
He’s ranked number #1, above Cotto for some reason. Cotto was just beaten by Pacquiao in his last fight by a 12th round knockout. But beyond Cotto and Clottey, the talent pool is abysmal in the WBO top 15. Most of the fighters are more prospects than contenders in my view, and deeply flawed. It’s more than a little sad and disappointing to see how poor the opposition is in the top 15 for the WBO, and perhaps for that reason we have Clottey ranked as number #1, even though he just got beat.

mayweather knows there’a possibility that pacman can beat him so that he can never give a chance to fight pacman in a fair match… he really scared for the consequence if he lost to pacman. if he wants to get the respect of the entire boxing world, then he need to face the best fighter like manny pacquiao. just be fair, don’t make some negative traits.
Their are other fighters out their for Pacquiao to fight besides Mayweather jr. I think people are using Mayweather as a scape goat to ignore other names out their like a Bradley, P.Williams, and others. If Mayweather Jr is scared, and you truly believe that then move on and fight some one else who’s equally as competative like the names I just mentioned. Lets talk about some of these other guys who deserve a shot, and who could actually defeat Manny.
I think if Pacquiao agrees to blood testing him and Mayweather will fight period. You can speculate on who’s scared, and you can say a million different things, but if Pacquiao takes the blood test their will be a fight, but he won’t end of story. I’m interested in the other fights that can be made, and that are getting ready to happen like Mayweather vs Mosley, and the other fighters out their like Williams, Martinez,and Berto.

If you’re so convinced that Pacquiao is taking PED’s, where’s your proof? but please don’t tell me that bec. he refuses to take the random blood test that is proof enough.
What signs or symptoms do you see in Pacquiao that proves to you that he is on roids?
Also, with your theory that “if you know the date of the test, you can beat the system”, I guess Pacquiao should know when to knock Clottey out so that when he gets “TESTED IMMEDIATELY RIGHT AFTER THE FIGHT” the roids on his system will be out of its cycle.

@jimmy,welter weight is a range from 141 to 147. So 145 is indeed as welter weight as you can get! 147 is the upper range, one omre pound and it’s Jr middle. Anybody who is 147 probably weight way over that when not fighting. They are like squeezing their tummy to fit into a size 30 pants when they should be wearing size 32.

before i even read this article or the post, i would like to know, If PacMan decides to retire after this fight, will he be critizied like a lot of people are criticizing Floyd. I think he should be he would have retired and not fought the best fighters in the weight class. Cotto and Clottey aren’t the best fighter in the division. Why want he fight William, Foreman, Mosley or Martinez. He could even fight Valero or even Bradley. In my opinion, and its my opinion. They know that he has been exposed with the drug situation and its going to taunt his image and other fighter will ask for the same test in the future. The Manny Camp are a bunch of jokes. Roach knows that manny is dirty and he is going to walk away because the hounds are on him and he is going to get caught. If Manny retires it won’t break my heart. I love his fights but 15 years in the game is a long time & sooner or later space has to be made for up & coming young bloods to get some of the spot light & the $$$ that comes with it.
When the career’s of Superstar’s like Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Tyson, etc… ended, boxing didn’t close shop. New, exciting fighters took their place.

dbeals…..no one knows exatly when did mosely take the drug. i’m not sure if mosely took the drug a day after they tested him. if that’s the case then i will come out negative. there are some flaws in any methods of drug testing. the only way you can make sure that the athlete is clean is to test them everyday(randomly) all the way up to the event. you can use blood or urine but you don’t have to use them both.
Check this out…you get a job that requests for a drug test before you get hired, so you take the drug test and are hired for the position. Years later a co-worker assumes you are taking drugs and wants a random test done on you. Your company (boxing organization) already tests you for drugs on a yearly basis, and that’s how things are done with employees (boxers). Now this co-worker says take a random drug tests or I’ll quit. Your company says to the co-worker “I guess your out of 50 million dollars”. Mayweather is scared plain and simple. Pacquiao abides by all the rules and regulations of his sport and that’s all he needs to do. If I walked in a business and brought a needle with me to take a random drug test on employees that were labeled. I probably would get kicked out and cursed at. Mayweather is soft, his fights weren’t as exciting as pacquiao’s fights. Compare all the weight classes Pacquiao has fought in and who he’s fought in those weight classes, “the best”. Look at mayweather’s record and see all the weight classes he’s fought in and who he has fought and then tell me who’s the greatest in this era.
If Mayweather is really sincere in cleaning up boxing by having boxers undergo random blood test in addition to the present urine tests, why doesn’t he go to the boxing commission and present his case? If he is able to convince the commission, I’m sure that they will adopt his suggestion. As it is right now Mayweather is just using random blood testing as a tool to harass his opponent. Who knows, maybe he has the testers under his influence such that when they draw blood from his opponent they make sure that it will cause sufficient injury (e.g., infectious needles, etc.) to that boxer to affect his performance. Mayweather is not somebody you can trust and anything he demands is suspect.
Why can’t Mayweather just forget about the blood test and fight Pacman. PEDs are overated.
Pacquiao is running out of shot fighters. I would bet after Clottey, Pacquiao faces Hector Camacho Senior for his farewell bout. Mosley is too good. He develops new superstitions when Floyd is brought up. Williams is too tall. Bradley is too slick. Now that some are calling for Manny to step up and face someone who is performing at an elite level, he suddenly decides to retire. Honestly though, I don’t understand why Camacho isn’t being mentioned yet. Maybe Manny thinks he is still too good, but he’s almost 50.
The most accurate method of testing for doping is urine and blood. Shane Mosely took a urine test prior to the ODLH bout and nothing was found. Case closed!

Pacman has taken a battering in quite afew very brutal fights. It’s a credit to his stamina & vitality that he kept fighting this long after seeing some of his earlier fights.
He kept boxing alive during a time of boxing unpopularity, boring winging cherry-picking title holders and plus the rise of UFC.

I guarantee Pacquiao vs Mosley will be BIGGER than Mayweather vs Mosley. The key here is Mosley and Floyd needs to compare apples to apples. Pacquiao will also more likely to beat Mosley in an earlier round.

It is just ironic that Pac who had always been compliant and clean has been accused by Floyd, a completely delusional blabbermouth. Testing issue is not Pac’s concern but the commission’s responsibility. Pac has all the right to reject the claims and now he is presumed guilty. Floyd’s ploy works well as so many are fooled by him. You can never do business with a con artist. If Pac retires then so be it and he will be remembered with his battles and his heart. PED coming from Floyd’s accusation? That’s the catch.. it came from Floyd and I don’t think history will believe him.

In May 2009, Floyd wanted the lions share of the purse using his fights against DeLaHoya and Hatton as leverage for the PPV argument. Nov 2009, Pacman vs Cotto beat Floyd vs Marquez PPV and Floyd can no longer use his pre-2009 fights as leverage for a bigger purse and NEVER mentioned it since then.
Pacman/Mayweather negotiation…Pacman agreed to 50/50 split despite beating Floyd’s PPV. Floyd cannot justify a higher split and had been pushed to agreee with 50/50. He used Sr.’s idea to throw a curve ball to stop the negotiation. WHY? Floyd still want the lions share of the purse.
2010, given another shot at PPV, Floyd is now anticipating to beat the Pac/Clottey PPV and if it happens, Floyd expressed that he will no longer agree with the 50/50 split even though Pacman agreed to 50/50 when it was the other way around. I’m glad if Pacquiao retires after his fight with Clottey. Fraud mayweather will never make the kind of Money he could have made if he fought Pacquiao. mayweather needs Pacquiao to make 2 to 3 times he makes fighting top welterweights– Pacquiao does’t need anymore money as he has enough that would last him and his family for a lifetime. Fraud mayweather owes a lot of money.

Are the facts intentionally ignored? Pacquiao agreed to take the blood test after the fight. Will any trace of PED vanish without a trace after a fight? I don’t think so… and I bet Floyd knows that & his playing with Manny’s head. Pacquiao a superstitious person and no amount of science will convince him that getting a little blood is ok. If the purpose of Floyd is to make sure that the fight is clean… why don’t both of them agree that whoever is on PED and Xylocaine should surrender his share of the money to the other guy. I think that is a fair deal if the purpose is of Floyd is really to rule out PED or pain killers. Here is an even better idea. If Pacman wins and is proven that he is not on PED… why doesn’t Floyd give his share of the money to Pacman (of course Floyd will not agree to that. He is a smart guy.)

Heck even Floyd Landis followed this script just recently…and in a bit of an ironic twist, Canada’s former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was accused of accepting bribes by the government that followed his. He sued them for defamation, and they backed down, but to the shock of absolutely no one but his most ardent supporters, last year he acknowledged under oath, at a public inquiry that he took $250,000 payment from a lobbyist in cash, for work he claims he did just a few weeks after he retired. While this is not a juicing related story it is a political story, and well, we all know that Manny is planning to run for public office in the Phillipines, and it is not a secret that the vast majority of politicians in the Phillipines are corrupt. Seems to me that there are just a few to many similarities between Manny and drug cheats and between Manny and corrupt politicians….I’m just saying…LOL

Retire after winning 7 world titles but half of them paper belts. Mayweather won the WBC titles on numerous occasions. Retire after beating washed up fighters like DLH, Hatton, Barrera, Morales or fighters mentally gone like Cotto or even a fighter like Clottey who just stands infront of you. Take the tests and fight Mayweather or Mosley.
Reire with the paper world titles after fighting washed up opponents or fighters that are easy too beat instead of taking a challenge like Mayweather or Mosley, and maybe with a bit of juice inside you.
Manny wanted to stop fighting a while ago. If Mayweather wasn’t even brought to the table I doubt he would have taken a fight with Clottey. Mayweather or Mosley are really the only 2 fights left for him. Since one will take care of the other come May (most likely Floyd), there’s really only one fight left. No point for him to keep boxing, especially with his political aspirations.
Pacman can also retire like Mayweather then comes back. So if Pacman is retired what is the next move of Mayweather in trying to make $200 million? Boxing fans surely will be disappointed but again whose to blame? I don’t blame Pacman for retiring rather than giving in for Mayweather’s demands. I love how people post down here without knowing the story behind Manny’s retirement plans. Manny has been looking to retire ever since he won the Oscar fight. March was suppose to be his last fight, and he was public about that so what his family. The failed negotiations with floyd forced him to get the fight with Clottey. All these things regarding Manny retiring to not risk being caught is so stupid.
