Roach: “He’s [Clottey] not going to be able to catch us” [Pacquiao]

By Dave Lahr: Freddie Roach seems to have it all figured out already how his fighter World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is going to be able to beat 32-year-old challenger Joshua Clottey on March 13th in their fight at the Dallas Cowboy stadium. Roach, in an article at Abs-Cbn News and AOL Fanhouse, had this to say about the strategy for fighting Clottey: “Clottey’s accurate if you stand in front of him, but the thing is, we’re going to be in and out and side to side and use our angles on him… It’s going to be very similar to the Oscar de la Hoya fight, I feel.”

This isn’t exactly earth shattering information here. Clottey’s weaknesses are already well known, even by casual boxing fans. There’s no real mystery about what it takes to beat Clottey. You have to use movement against him, get in and get out and make sure you don’t stand in close to him so that he can get his shots off.

Clottey can be beaten even if a fighter does decide to stand and trade with him all night long, as he tends to tire out by the 6th round. However, if Pacquiao were to decide to stand in front of Clottey all night long, he might end up getting a little beaten up by Clottey, because he can punch a little before he typically tires out. But as far as Roach saying that Pacquiao will be going in and out and side to side against Clottey, that’s nothing new either.

That’s like saying the sun will come up tomorrow morning. Come on, Roach, we all know that Pacquiao fights like that all the time. Give us something different that he’s going to do for a change. Pacquiao always uses the in and out style of fighting, and always has. If you look at Pacquiao’s earliest fights of his career, way before Roach began training him, Pacquiao was using the in and out style of fighting even then. So for Roach to say that Pacquiao is going to use that style against Clottey in their fight, it’s not anything new. Yeah, Pacquiao will use the in and out style of fighting and he also be throwing combinations. Thanks for telling me that, Roach.

Roach also has these pearls of wisdom to say about the Pacquiao-Clottey fight: “De la Hoya strategy” to be effective, Pacquiao would again rely on his superior speed.” Oh really? Why did Roach even mention that? Of course, Pacquiao is going to need to use his better speed to beat Clottey, no matter what strategy Pacquiao uses against him. Pacquiao isn’t going to out-slow Clottey into submission.

Pacquiao will do what he always does – throw fast shots. If Pacquiao was to throw slow punches, he’d be asking for it. Pacquiao is good only as long as he has fast hand speed. Once his hand speed goes, Pacquiao will be like a bird without wings. He might be able to beat some guys, but I think he would start getting the stuffing beaten out of him.

Roach also says, “He’s [Clottey] not going to be able to catch us.” I don’t know what Roach means with that comment. Does that mean that Roach is going to have Pacquiao running from Clottey all night long? If so, that doesn’t square with Roach’s comments about Clottey being the more exciting fight compared to a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight because of his ability to mix it up. If Clottey is not going to be able to catch Pacquiao, as Roach says, then that sounds like a boring fight to me.

God, I hope Pacquiao doesn’t run from Clottey. That will be painfully boring to watch. I think this is a crummy fight to begin with because Clottey was beaten in his last fight against recent Pacquiao victim Miguel Cotto, but if Clottey isn’t going to be able to catch Pacquiao, then that seems like Roach will have Pacquiao playing a hit and run game all night long. That sounds like a horrible fight. I think I’d rather watch Mayweather-Pacquiao, thank you.

(2)what year did pacquiao made the p4p list ?

  • bonito says:

mayweather had one fight in over two years yet he’s rank No.2 by ring magazine ??
I have two question. (1) which fighter has a better P4P Ranking for their whole career ?
Especially from 2001 through to 2007 please POSTthe list of p4p so that everyone would get to see it and know which fighter had been on top of the P4Plist for most of their career

  • bonito says:

Manny Pacquiao won belts in five different weight division , the other two belts were given to him by Ring Magazine .please explain so that everyone could understand that its sport writers that give pacquiao these belt, so please there’s no 7 belts won .

  • Lord Hughey Sanchez says:

David Lahr must be some boxing fan that lost a lot of money betting against Manny Pacquiao. This is just another one of those articles with the intention of bashing a well-liked and also a hated boxer. Dave please write something more relevant than a Manny Pacquiao topic or better yet go and bury your head in the sand.

  • wilson says:

Mayweather was awarded by BWAA as the “DUCKER OF DECADE & DUCKER OF THE CENTURY”

  • lex_fugitive says:

    floflo;
Yep you are definitely right. I wish floyd would take on top level competition like Clottey instead of picking on the best welterweight fighter. Come on, why is Floyd ducking the 5-8 best welterweight? Is he scared of losing his “0″??

  • floflo says:

yes your right in and out was boring like the way floyd fight right, but i think manny is far way better coz he fights big tough guys unlike floyd.

  • Jimmy says:

    thanks commonsense

  • commonsense says:

Jimmy, well put. This is a stupid article. Tell us something we don’t know.

  • yatusabes says:

@guvo. that is a stupid comment. if pacman would not use steroids cotto would have whooped his ass.

  • Phoocquiao says:

Isn’t it just as arbitrary to say that Mayweather’s strategy is to shoulder roll, pot-shot, and counter to win by decision? What the hell was the author expecting? VooDoo?

I’m very impressed that people assume Pac is going to win this fight. Let’s make one thing clear. Pac is a blown-up lightweight who is very strong and competitive at welter, but he’s not a welter. So anyone natural welter has more than a good chance of beating Pac.

People are starting to lose perspective on this thing. Whether his last opponents were shot or not, they still should have been able to win those fights or at least make them competitive. It’s very impressive that Manny is simply blowing these guys out of the water.

  • Rodge says:

The raiders are my favorite team but I wouldn’t pay big money to see them play new orleans right now; Nor will I pay the big money to see cotto’s last victim fight pacman. This is not to say there is no chance pac could lose but it is HIGHLY unlikely. I will be watching mayweather/mosley it will be worth the big money to see if mosley’s heart and strenth will overcome floyd’s long lasting speed and evasiveness.

  • Jimmy says:

i really did not like this article…its all about hating on pacqauio…Seriously dave lahr, what other type of style should manny fight against clottey. the best way to beat him is by moving in and out throwing punches and showing angles. WHAT OTHER STYLE SHOULD HE USE AGAINST AN OPPONENT WHOSE ONLY DEFENSE IS PUTTING HIS HANDS UP TO HIS FACE? if you cant get in the front door, then get in through the side door. he is gonna show some angles duh!..this article is about you not liking pacquaio rather then the fight. and what he means about clottey wont catch him[pacquaio].. means that manny will to be fast for clottey..why would you assume that manny will run? WHEN HAVE YOU SEEN HIM RUN FROM HIS OPPONENTS? so why would you assume that…”Pacquiao is good only as long as he has fast hand speed. Once his hand speed goes, Pacquiao will be like a bird without wings.” what kind of comment is that? of course he is good because of hand speed. you forgot to mention footwork though.. but that is what he best at..its like saying that that peyton mannins is onyl good cause he can throw a football…DUH! thats what he is kknow for..you wont expect him to play a linebacker position..just like you wont expect manny to fight with his slow handspeed. not a good article at all..AT ALL…

  • DAZZA says:

DAVE LAHR THE NEW MANNY PEREZ WOT A DICK

  • Jeckyl says:

If this is the case, then we will see another bloody face, a higher power punch landed on clottey. If Roach prediction is right, then it’ll just be tune up fight for Manny until Floyd agree to fight him. I don’t see a point on Mayweather fighting Pacquiao especially when the opponent ended up with bloody and disfigure face. I have no doubt that Floyd can beat anyone, so as Manny. Floyd might win against Manny, we don’t know for sure but at a high price. I guess he does not want to ended up looking like Cotto.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

sweetpea….so you’re telling me that the state of Texas doesn’t do any drug test at all. how could you be so sure of that? do you run the state athletic commission of the state of texas?

lex_f…..you still don’t give up do you? MANNY PACQUIAO IS THE 2009 FIGHTER OF THE YEAR, more so…FIGHTER OF THE DECADE. you know who voted him? the BOXING WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. they are just as important as the fighters. with out them boxing doesn’t exist.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

sweetpea and lex_f…..you guys dtill don’t get. even my 3 year old daughter can understand what’s mayweather trying to imply here. i’ll explain it again. manny didn’t want to be floyd’s follower. manny’s demands are with in the proximity except the $10 million penalty but i think it’s justified based on what happened in the JMM fight. what justification floyd has when he demanded that RANDOM BLOOD TESTING? he wanted olympic style drug testing but the olympics preferred urine analysis method of testing. i hope you guys understand now. if you don’t, well, you need to go back to school.

  • Stevo says:

    manuel? Is that you?

  • woodster says:

Does clottey have any chance against Manny.I watched clotteys last couple of fights and i just don’t see how Manny can lose and i don’t see the point in this fight!!

  • KFC says:

so you admit that floyd fight are boring as hell because his always running?are you really a writer or what? one thing for sure you are pachater….

  • Huhuge says:

clottey would be the best fight rather than cotto, cause i think he(clottey) win by ud even though manny have to fight cotto cause he(cotto) has the belt. so i’m sure manny have to face this guy to prove that he(pacquiao) is best of them.

  • TB says:

roach doesnt sell pacs fights at all. most people see this as a lop[sided fight already. I personaly think pac might have some troubles early in this fight, just because clotty is not going to just walk into pac like all the other fighters pac chooses to fight, clotty will actually take steps back and to the sides. Witch i see frustrating pac early, and i dont know if he can fight a guy that dosent just keep coming forward swinging because i’ve yet to see it.

  • El boxer says:

    Dude,this fight is overrated.I’m out….

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Was the Pac/Oscar fight boring? One sided yes, but not boring.

Sure when Pac looses his hand speed he’ll be easier to beat, who isn’t? It’s a pointlesss comment because as of this day Pac’s is too fast.

This is Pac/Oscar 2 though I doubt Clotttey will hit the canvas, he’ll just get hit a lot then won’t be able to find Manny.

  • hubert grasby says:

I Hope Pacman will meet your approval when he has beat the coming opponents and gets finally matched up with maybe a gorilla or a Sumo wrestler – what next ??

  • joseph says:

The boxing writer’s on this site really suck. I just hope they don’t call themselves journalists. Here is a boxing writer complaining because Teddy Roach’s fight plan is not more, I don’t know, magical? A supposed boxing writer who does not know what Teddy means when he says, they will not let Cottey catch them”. Roach means Clottey will not be able to react in time to catch Paq w shots due to Paq’s speed and footwork.

By the way you have this writer write an artcile that gives no news, but just sarcasm and not very creative sarcasm at that. I mean come on, “That’s like saying the sun will come up tomorrow morning.” how original and creative. Also, may be you shold take a college level writing and English course. You start the new paragraph (That’s like saying the sun will come up tomorrow morning.) with what you should of ended your last paragraph.

All the boxing writers do on this site is give conclusions based on bias opinions. No actual journalism is here. Y9ou give a flasshy title for you article and then the piece is just amateurish, like this one.

This site is an anti-Paquiao boxing site. Just look at all the ridiclous stuff it has to say in most of its Paqman articles and how it mostly praises Mayweather in every way.

  • Onin says:

    Lex,

And who do you suggest manny should fight? Mayweather didn’t choose Mosley… he was cornered and there’s no one else he could pick. Remember that PBF said that Mosley’s not PPV material and now he’s fighting SSM.

  • wdk says:

wat a waste of time reading this rubbish, with roach in your corner you have got one of the best trainers going around,
think about it wat if he did train money then he might get a bit more respect and be a better fighter

  • lex_fugitive says:

So are all you Pacfans saying Dave is wrong and Clottey is some great fighter? Is clottey not none for wearing out halfway through fights, never moving his feet, and throwing few punches? Because everything I’ve read about Clottey, from many different writers seem to think this too. Manny is almost a 6-1 favorite already and will probably be closer to a 7 or 8-1 favorite by fight night. Come on, I don’t care how much you love Manny this is going to be an easy win for him. There is no way anyone would try and defend Mayweather if he was fighting Clottey at this point in his career. ODLH and Hatton were the two thought to have the best chance to beat Floyd in 2007. Today it is Shane Mosley. Manny is a great fighter!! Clottey is a good fighter. This is a mismatch and everyone knows it. This is what people call cherry-picking and ducking the best.

  • jujuhound says:

Now don’t be spreadin’ this around… Lahr is on a Pacquiao retainer fee. That’s why he writes so much about Pacman. Publicity is publicity, whether good or bad, right?

  • USMC says:

@lex_fugitive: Because xylocaine boy floyd is too scared to fight. Everyone knows he is afraid of Clottey too and you definitely know how mosley/mayweather came about, it’s called no choice whatsoever. fight or be crowned a coward. wake up!!! your gonna miss the bus!!!!

  • USMC says:

@lex_fugitive: The best is fighter of the year and decade. That is not Mayweather. LOL!

  • Guvo says:

Clottey will receive similar punishment as David Diaz and Cotto. Only Paul Williams or Floyd Mayweather jr would really test Pacquiao

  • sweetpea says:

    mr.sweetsci;
Manny refused random blood tests. Yes, Floyd asked for them, but who asked for or demanded them doesn’t change the fact that he refused ANY RANDOM BLOOD TEST and instead chose a second-tier opponent in a state where he won’t have to take any drug tests, blood or urine.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Manny refused random blood tests. Doesn’t matter who asked for it, he refused any random blood tests. If Floyd didn’t want to fight Manny he wouldn’t have agreed to the other 6 demands Manny made, including a new rule Manny made up too. Its pretty clear now who’s ducking and who’s not. Mayweather-Mosley and Pacquiao-Clottey.

How has Mayweather been factually proven as cherry-picking? By facing the two toughest opponents the two closest in odds in 2007? By fighting the top welterweight on May 1? By completely cleaning out two weight divisions? Manny fought a 36 at a weight he hadn’t fought at in over 8 years, then two opponents that looked poor in narrow victories after suffering knockout losses. Now he’s taking on the 5-8 welterweight. So, just keep yelling KFC and calling names like a 7 year old, because if you pay attention to the facts, your idol doesn’t look that great compared next to PBF.

  • GTF OUTTA HERE says:

I think everyone would rather watch Mayweather vs Shane!! Pacroid backed out remember ? This whole blood testing thing has nothing to do with anything other than a reason for Pacroid not to fight Money May. If Pac would of agreed to the up to the day of the fight testing, chances are he would have popped positive. Pac knows that drawing blood doesn’t affect him. I could go on but lets face it, Pac didn’t take the test, the greater and superior fighter to Pac, Sugar Sahne is taking the test, so not only is Sugar Shane a better fighter than Pac, he is proving he has more heart and love for the sport than Pac also, taking the blood test and giving the people the fight they WANT to see, not no Bullsh!t Clottey crap that Pac and Roach trying to sell as a good fight, hopefully everybody here knows that the Clottey Pac fight is a complete joke, who in their right mind would pay all that money to watch it on PPV when you already know who the winner is. Save your money on the Clottey cant win fight and take your wife, girlfriend, or kids out to dinner, it would be money well spent instead of throwing it away watching a fight you already know who the winner is going to be.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

steve…..manny didn’t refuse random drug testing. what he refused though is the RANDOM BLOOD TESTING demanded by floyd. the mayweather camp knows that manny is not comfortable being his blood drawn. they’ve always known that manny is clean.

  • steve says:

WTF how did Floyd know Manny would refuse random drug testing ? Why accept all Mannys stipulations if he did not want the fight ?

  • WTF says:

I think everyone would rather watch Mayweather vs Pac !! Mayweather backed out remember ? This whole blood testing thing has nothing to do with anything other than a reason for Mayweather not to fight Pac.If Pac would of agreed to the up to the day of the fight testing,Mayweather would of wanted it between rounds, then everyday for 3 months afterwards – and so on and so on.Mayweather knows that they will not find anything in him or Pac.Why ? because they never do.He just knows that Manny really thinks that drawing blood affects him.I can’t believe no one really knows anything about certain PEDs on any of these internet sites. How many cheaters has the USADA said they caught using HGH or other high tech PEDs ? None ! They can’t – why because you can screen over them.Hell now they look for the screening agents in blood work (the ones they know of) because they can’t detect the real thing.Ask any big body builder (thats to big to be natural) that if he did take PEDs (HGH) could he cover it up -if he’s honest and knows what he’s doing he’ll say yes ! Sorry people if you look at all Pro sports the guys are getting bigger, stronger and faster at alarming rates and at older ages.If people really want to accuse Manny of this type of thing (juicing) I would have to say look at the accusers ? Delahoya = mid 30s Mayweather = low 30s (and ripped plus same weight gain as Pac) Mosley = almost 39 Hopkins = 40+ and all have look as good as they did when they were younger when fighting good fighters ! Sorry it’s hard for me to believe that Floyd is so concerned about cleaning up boxing with the blood tests after he has shown he is not concerned with anything but Floyd! It makes more sense to me that if you have a agency in place doing the testing that you (GBP) put there it would make it very easy to manipulate it to your interest! No I’m not accusing any of these great fighters of doing something that I have no proof of and would think everone else should do the same.

  • oscar says:

clottey needs to do something diffrent bar just go forward cause thats when manny is most dangerous but i think that is only way he can fight . if he fights like he did cotto it will be an easy night and it will be good too watch how excellent many is but now i am more looking forward to mayweather mosley

  • unbelievable!! says:

@ lex fag: you are one funny moronic kfc fan! your boy has been perceived and factually shown that he was the ducker and cherry picker!! your boy is fightng the genuine roid cheater that cotto already beat that tkod by pacman!! anytime i see your name i know it’s nonsense comments!!

  • Barry says:

Bias writer against Pacquiao, just like there are some for Pacquiao. The bias ones do sound ridiculous because their logic has so many fallacies. Not very bright either. Sad.

  • suga says:

chase n run is what your going to get with a pac vs may fight. pacman vs sugar shane will be the fight of the century a universal collide.

if you want chasing scene, just watch terminator movies, forget pac vs may. the wholeworld knows pacman is better all around than floyd. proof? = who is the fighter of the year? better yet who is the fighta of the decade? ;)

  • Ishtiaq Ahmed says:

This guy is very biast! i agree manny could have picked a beta fighter, but Clottey is a an awesome fighter! ders a reason y freddie roach is one of the best trainers in the world, cos he picks out the weakness of the opponent n then punishes him for it….

  • Rico says:

Amazing thoughts friends. Clottey, I believe will prove a lot of you wrong come Mar13. I can see the one-sidedness in your views. True Manny is a true champion but he’s asking for a lot in fighting Clottey. Dont know how many Clottey fights you have seen especially with everyone focusing on the Great pacman or listening to articles pro-manny journalists have written. Interviewed Josh and watched him train last week. He says you will see a clottey firing on all cylinders throughout the bout. He has upped his conditioning and has promised a performance which will change all perception about him….somehow I believe him…the hunger in the young man’s eyes gives a thousand pictures of what will happen on the day..he’s determined to win!!!

  • Gary says:

are you sure your name is not manuel perez or liam santiago?

  • GUNITs says:

I bet Clottley wont catch Pac, since Pac is going to be so high on the roids

  • lex_fugitive says:

Why is Manny fighting Clottey?? this is a joke. Mayweather would never hear the end of it if he signed someone like Clottey. Fortunately, Mayweather came back to beat the best and not waste time with meaningless fights like this. There are three top weltweights Mayweather, Williams, and Mosley and if Manny stays at welterweight and wants to keep credibility then he has to fight one of these three. One or two more fights like March 13, and no one will even care about Manny; he will just be seen as a cheat who’s afraid to fight the best.

  • Rufus says:

I truly don’t understand some of you people and this notion of “running” makes a boring fight. I know you use it to denigrate Mayweather, but I don’t get it…are you really boxing fans? This is really perculiar for Filipinos. Your capitol hosted one of greatest fights of all-time featuring a straight-forward, in-your-face brawler and an on-your-toes, circling, keep your distance, constant motion boxer–remember that fight Pinoy Nation.

1975, THe Thrilla in Manila, Ali-Frazier; the greatest boxing trilogy of all-time. I guess by today’s standard Ali would be considered a runner and a coward. I remember the contrasting styles made for exciting fights–not today I guess.

  • james says:

what were you expecting roach to give a long detailed description of how pacquiao is going to fight clottey?
I woldnt worry about pacquiao running away because..er…he doesnt fight like that, infact i cant think of a recent fight (or any) were hes used that tactic, and please to god go watch the fights clottey has lost before you start with the whole “well pacquiao beat cotto and cotto beat clottey therefore..”

  • JJO says:

Dick Lahr, you alway being negative about Pacquiao.
    oops i mean Dave Lahr.

  • MoneyPack says:

Roach: “Clottey is not going to be able to catch Pacquiao”.

Translation: Fight will be over before Clottey wakes up.
