Pavlik vs. Martinez on April 17th

By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) will be facing light middleweight Sergio Martinez in middleweight action on April 17th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The fight will be shown by HBO as a doubleheader with a fight against International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Lucian Bute facing knockout artist Edison Miranda in the other fight being shown.

Arum, the promoter for Pavlik, is expected to make a formal announcement for the Pavlik-Martinez bout within the next two weeks. In contrast to the Cotto-Foreman fight, which I see as a stinker, the Pavlik vs. Martinez fight is actually a good fight. Pavlik hasn’t done much since winning the WBC/WBO middleweight titles from Jermain Taylor in 2007, and has mainly defended his titles against a list of dull opponents.

Some boxing fans feel that Pavlik has been milking his middleweight title by taking on easy opponents rather than going after risky fights against Paul Williams or Arthur Abraham. Pavlik was badly spanked by 43-year-old Bernard Hopkins in a non-title fight in October 2008. Hopkins made Pavlik look like a one-dimensional 2nd tier fighter in beating him by a lopsided 12 round decision.

Martinez, 34, could very well do the same thing to Pavlik unless Kelly is able to knock him out. Pavlik didn’t exactly impress in his last fight, beating a very ordinary looking Miguel Espino by a 5th round stoppage in December. Pavlik basically slugged it out with Espino in the trenches until Espino was moved down in the 5th round. Based on how Pavlik looked against Espino, I’d say that Martinez should beat Pavlik without too many problems. That doesn’t mean that Martinez will actually win the fight, though.

It’s not easy to beat a champion, especially when they’re fighting on their own soil. I can see Pavlik winning a questionable decision over Martinez. If Pavlik can get by Martinez, a potential fight that looms out on the horizon for Pavlik is a bout against Bute. If Pavlik can somehow can by Martinez, I have no doubts that Pavlik will lose and lose badly to Bute.

This is a bad match-up for Pavlik, because Bute is a lot like Foreman with his hit and run style of fighting, only much better and with bigger power. I see Pavlik losing all 12 rounds against Bute in a hopelessly one-sided fight. However, I seriously doubt that Pavlik will ever fight Bute. I can see something getting in the way of making this fight happen, perhaps another staph infection on Pavlik’s hand or something like that.

palvik is a stronger fighter then paul williams…dont expect to see martinez stand in and trade with palvik like he did against williams..if he does try that palvik will win easy….but i would expect martinez to move alot more.with that said expect palvik to wear him with his relentless pace n stop martinez late..remember martinez is coming up in weihgt n was worned down by the end of that williams fight….palvik t.k.o. in 10 or 11

I see this fight looking like the Cotto/Margarito fight . Martinez’s hand and foot speed will probably give Pavlik some problems for a few rounds . Once Pavlik has enough time to get his flow going he will pressure Martinez until he eventually
breaks him down . Pavlik is just too big and too powerful . Pavlik TKO round9/10 !!

    Boo;
I tend to agree with you. However, Williams is still the best at 154. Martinez was the best champion there and Williams beat him. Sure it took everything he had, but he pulled it out. Cintron is the only other quality opponent there that I can think of. Angulo is decent, but got out boxed by Cintron and I think Williams would beat him too. I’m definitely looking forward to Williams-Cintron. However, all that being said, Williams is clearly at his best at 147. Plus all the big names are at 147. It will be tough for him to get the big fights though. First, he has the same manager as Mayweather. Which if anyone actually thinks about it would see how big a problem that is. If Haymon puts Mayweather and Williams together, one of them will lose, and therefore lose earning potential. The only way Haymon could not lose loads of money would be a very close fight that Mayweather wins. It would have to be extremely close and Mayweather would have to win by the slightest margin for Haymon not to lost money in one of theirs’ future bouts. Second, Manny will never fight him and Margarito has been ducking him like crazy since their first fight. Margarito took two million dollars less to fight someone besides Williams. Maybe he could get a fight with Cotto, he seems to be Top Rank’s sacrifial lamb.

The first 2 to 3 rounds of this fight will be competitve. After that Pavlik will start taking over. Probably a 5th or 6th round KO for Pavlik. Martinez is just way to easy to hit to give Pavlik any real problems for more than a few rounds.

As for Paul Williams he will never face Pavlik. His failure to clearly beat Martinez presented Dan Goosen with a very harsh wake up call. His boy has nothing to offer above 147.

    We shall see!

PW vs Kelly Pavlic will happen later this year I bet. Can’t wait for that one!

(I think Kelly will stop him in the middle to late rounds)

  • arroyo grande bob says:

pavlik had better martinez doesnt have any Monzon in him. Incredible fighter. Seemed slow and awkward. Appeared to push his punches, but was so deceptive. A shame for the age difference between him and Hagler. This would be a dream match-up.

  • Oli says:

besides why is kelly the joke pavlik fighting a guy paul williams has just beat?

I guarentee there’l be another staph infection

  • Mike says:

Pavlic will destroy Martinez, watch and see! He is too short and does NOT have the power to take Pavlic out!
Also Pavlic hits ALOT harder than PW!

  • T Dogg says:

Pavlik is still a very dangerous fighter. He can stop Martinez with a big shot in any round of the fight. As far as Bute, he has a questionable chin and Pavlik could easily knock him out, 4th round.

  • Oli says:

I see another staph infection coming on any day now

  • dav says:

they keep going on about hop we all no pavlik cant fight a / 168 and 170 he ant ready yet he did not want the fight with hop he lost that fight in his head before he went in the ring yes hop was great that night and about a stone bigger but at 160 he will over power martinez by 9 rounds /and he will KO williams very easy he cant take a good punch from someone of pavliks power thats why williams team will try ans get as much money as poss

  • Boxing fan says:

firs off: this article is anti-pavlik. Pavlik can beat Martinez.

as for Williams: i just hope he can get a good fight, maybe against Cintron. i wish P-Will could get more popular so he could get bigger fights.

  • Sophocles says:

So where does the Punisher go from here since his two potential dance partners are squaring up?

  • bump says:

pavlik knocks martinez out in 7′ hopkins is a dawg but he will never truely shine unless he fights a real champion like floyd /mosely/winky/you name them he aint boxed them my word….

  • bump says:

everyone hollering about these fights/ who ducking who;we all know pretty boy floyd is the money fight …..what you got on it?

  • bump says:

    mayweather the truth hands down….

  • Jake says:

Martinez won his fight with Williams, but he will have to come to a strong puncher and his legs will be less willing as the fight rolls but Martinez is also strong and Pavlik is hittable. This should be a good fight.

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Sergio deserves this fight. If he can beat Pavlik the rematch with him and P Will would be BIG. I think P Will should go after Citron just to stay busy. Battle of the Lankies…

  • Doc Holiday says:

Real good fight on an even better Card…Kelly needs to quit playing and make the PWill fight happen but this is a step in the right direction. I really think PWill owes Martinez a rematch though!!!

  • Kris says:

Martinez is going to put on a show, in my opinion, by slicing Pavlik over and over. This matchup is all wrong for Pavlik and all right for Martinez. Sergio is way too quick with his hands and feet for Pavlik to keep up. I will say, though, that if Pavlik can walk Sergio down into the ropes/corner, he can bombs away and beat/wear Sergio down.

But, I see Sergio just moving around all night, throwing quick and accurate punches on his way to an easy decision win.

  • Poor noynoys says:

Martinez is going to give Pavlik hell. Props to Kelly for some headbanging fights, but he looks like crap against guys with lots of movement, who don’t just stand in front of him> Hopkins schooled him and had him looking dumbfounded with all the movement.
