Ortiz stops Alatorre
By Jim Dower: Light welterweight contender Victor Ortiz (26-2-1, 21 KO’s) stopped Hector Alatorre (16-9, 5 KO’s) in the 10th round on Thursday night at the Club Nokia, in Los Angeles, California. Ortiz, 24, hurt the badly over-matched Alatorre with a huge left-right combination that caused referee David Mendoza to step in and halt the bout at 0:51 of the 10th round.
Alatorre landed a couple of nice right hands in the 2nd round that caused Ortiz to respond with some big left hands of his own that appeared to hurt Alatorre. Ortiz continued to fight well in the 3rd through six rounds. By the 6th, Alatorre was bleeding under his right eye. Ortiz pounded Alatorre with shots in the 7th and 8th, trapping him against the ropes and landing with huge shots.
In the 9th, Ortiz worked Alatorre over with heavy shots, mixing them from head to body. Ortiz still fought in a controlled manner not rushing things like he had done in his loss against Maidana. However, Ortiz poured it on in the 10th round, blasting away at Alatorre until the referee stepped in and mercifully stopped the fight at 0:51 of the round.

Only time will tell, but my vote goes to Ortiz eventually beating the best at 140, which includes Maidana in a rematch, Khan, Valero (when he moves up) and (yes, I said it) Bradley! There’s no shame in losing to these guys, but Ortiz has equal skills of the best at 140, plus arguably more power. Win or lose, we fans are the lucky ones!!
having now watched the fight, it is far more clear why this happened. this was a straight lesson in how not to lose your cool, keep composed and tire out an opponent into the late rounds. using a natural lightweight, who to fight at welterweight looked like his training consisted of alternating burger king with mcdonalds (belly building) so that ortiz could boss the fight throughout, and build some confidence back in his own ability. which make no mistake he has, in spades.
final thought is that while he does have the power to take anyone in his division out, once he starts to let the punches fly, his defence gets pretty open.

Amir Khan was taking in 54 seconds of the first round. Therefore, he really did not take a beating. Also, Breidis Prescott is not even half as dangerous as Marcos Maidana. Victor Oritz took a beating from a much more dangerous, Marcos Maidana for 6 rounds. That is the reason why Victor Ortiz appears to be shot fighter now.

Are you telling me that you were impressed with Victor Ortiz’s performance? Because if you are. Then you are just biased.
I definately think tha Ortiz can box with Amir Khan but no way could Khan trade with Ortiz. With good managment Ortiz will be world champion.
yep, just like khan was shot after prescott.
oh wait….wba world champion.
i cant stand little amir, but i respect the hell out of the way he’ turned it around.

a shot 23 year old fighter? give me a break!
@Mr Rich
Its time to move on now. You are living in the past. Victor Ortiz is a shot fighter now. Stop making excuses for him.
Everyone knows Ortiz has world class power but he jas to work on his defence and gets some rounds under is belt. Thats why he was fighting Alatorre, the guy had never been stopped before and was durable and only had ever lost by decisions before. So Ortiz gets some rounds in, irons out the chinks in his armour and gets some confidence back….. anything wrong with that?
see, i understand the road back and all that jazz, but he wasnt badly beaten by maidana. for large portions of that fight ortiz was himself on the verge of winning the stoppage and had maidana on the floor 3 times.
i havent seen lastnights footage yet, anyone know where i can get it? if not it will be one of those fights i have to wait ages to find on youtube.
he is only 23, he’ll get there, i just think alatorre was a couple of steps too far backwards. if amir khan can come back from a knockout defeat, then ortiz can definitely make it. im with jerry though, id like to see him with roach, just to polish him up a bit.
Ortiz is done! Once he gets in a war again or in a fight where someone actually hits him back, he’s going to crumble. He doesnt look like a confident fighter, he looks hesitant to exchange punches.
I the fight against Maidana is still in the back of his head. I was at the Nokia Club last night, and i wasnt impressed with his performance.

Victor Ortiz already did take a step upwards last June. He lost the fight badly. He appears to be a shot fighter now. I think retirement from boxing may the best option for Victor Ortiz. Boxing could be too dangerous for him now.
Ortiz needs to slowly get his confidence back thats why…
i don’t often say this but, what the hell did he fight him for?!?!
i think ortiz gave a good account of himself in his 2 losses, especially against maidana. he is no bum, he needs to move upwards not take steps back and take part in complete waste of time fights.
