Mitchell vs. Mendoza: Kevin comments on Khan and Katsidis – News

By William Mackay: Lightweight contender Kevin Mitchell (30-0, 22 KO’s) will be facing 2nd tier lightweight Ignacio Mendoza (27-5, 18 KO’s) this Saturday in a stay busy fight at the Wembley Arena, Wembley, London. Mitchell, 25, is hoping to get a win so that he can possibly line up a fight against World Boxing Organization lightweight interim champion Michael Katsidis in the near future. However, Mitchell needs to get by the 26-year-old Mendoza to keep moving forward towards that goal. Mitchell defeated Colombian knockout artist Breidis Prescott by a 12 round decision in December.

The win was an especially important one because it put Mitchell’s name on the boxing map. Prescott, a fighter with a ton of power, had destroyed British star Amir Khan in a 1st round knockout only a year earlier. Khan never attempted to avenge the defeat to Prescott. At 5’8”, Mitchell was thought to be too small and weak to beat the likes of Prescott.

However, Mitchell used a lot of movement and pot shots to win a wide decision over Prescott. The fight was fought in England. I saw the fight myself, and felt that like fellow writer Scott Gilfoid, that Prescott should have won the fight by at least six rounds because of his much bigger shot, busier style and his equal connects. However, Mitchell got the win and moved forward with his career.

Mitchell seems relieved that Khan has left England for the United States to further his career, saying “When Amir was fighting it was always the ‘Amir Khan show’ and I think now it will be the ‘Kevin Mitchell show’. I’ll be holding the big bills in London and it will be about me now. Amir’s done his own thing for his own reasons but he’s done me a massive favour in terms of marketability and sponsorship.”

It might not be as easy as Mitchell thinks to fill Khan’s shoes and become a huge star in England. Khan had much more flashy skills, better hand speed and overall more ability than Mitchell in my estimation. In watching Mitchell’s dull safety-first fight against Prescott, I found it hard to keep awake watching him. I’ve seen a number of Mitchell’s other fights, and he seems vulnerable when he trades with his opponents, and isn’t particularly fast or powerful. Khan appears to be a much more entertaining fighter, and I don’t know if Mitchell will ever measure up to him. I also think Khan would have utterly destroyed Mitchell had he had the inclination to stick around England and fight Mitchell.

Still speaking about Khan, Mitchell says “I personally think if he [Khan] thought he could beat me, the fight would be on. It would be a highly marketable fight and a massive money generator for the pair of us but I don’t think it’s on because he doesn’t fancy it. There’s too much to lose for him. There are easier fights out there for the same sort of money where he knows he’s not going to be in trouble.”

I disagree. I think Khan doesn’t see it as an appealing fight, because it would only interest England, and not the rest of the world, and especially not fans in the United States. Khan wants to take on huge stars in the sport like Juan Manuel Marquez, and there’s really no comparison between the star power of Mitchell and that of Marquez.

I think Khan is doing the right thing by going after fighters that are well known rather than a fighter like Mitchell, who is mainly known in the UK. For Khan to fight Mitchell, he would be basically shutting out the rest of boxing fans elsewhere in the world, because it’s highly unlikely that fans outside of the UK would want to see a fight between Mitchell and Khan.

What makes me laugh is that the Khan fans use the excuse that he already beat the man that beat Maidana so why fight him and then in the next breath they say that Khan would smash Mitchell. That my friends is a severe case of double standards!

  • Michael says:

Katsidis would walk straight through Mitchell, Bully him and stop him inside of 6 rounds and if the UK promoters put up a decent purse would be happy to do it.

    @ Mike
    I second that!

  • Mike says:

Prescott got whooped, deal with it!

Firstly if you think prescott won you have not a clue about boxing and you see what u wanna see, even if your wrong.Kevin mitchell has acheived far more in the profesional ranks than kahn(BRITISH,EURPOEAN TITTLE).These tittles may not mean nothing to you americans but they do to british fighters.Hatton, calzaghe and froch also worked there way up like this, but khan did not he jumped the queue because hes been carefully spoon fed and given a easy ride because of hes glass chin.Kahn has fooled alot of people but he cant fool real boxing fans, but good luck to him because if he fought a british fighter like hatton or mithchell he will get ko’d and thats him finished,so why not go to america and fight a small old legend in marquez and fool people like these very strange boxing writers.

bye bradley, you step up to be the next of the remaining boxer to fall.demarco got this will broken .he wont be the same again, Kendall Holt knock you down twice,he throws wild round bombs if can hit you with telegraphs punches .then faster velero with this straighter busy punches with angles would beat you down every round that if he dont ko you instead . then he would have used you as a stepping stone, a fresh new fighter has arrive.

some body mentioned that prescott distroyed khan in one round I think that is because no one knows prescott before khan fight that he is a heavy puncher and fighting him needs a different technique but when Mitchell fight prescott he was defensive and running all around the ring without giving chance to prescott to land a clean shot like khan did againt Katsidis, so there is difference when khan fight prescott and mitchell fight prescott and the answer is style. But if Khan Vs Mitchell I will go for khan he will out class mitchell because khan is more entertaining and has more speed.

  • oscar says:

haha, if you and your mate think prescott easily won the fight you know nothing about boxing you complete plonker. Yeah kevin ig good but his name is not big enough to get kahn yet think he might be able to grab a belt but not sure if he can fight with the big stars.

  • m says:

Mitchell clearly won that fight against prescott, what fight were you watching

  • knight says:

I thought that prescott had hurt mitchell in the fight, but mitchell didnt really hurt prescot. I do agree with the the article that when prescot did land, they were more heavier blows than when mitchell landed.

mitchell is a very good fighter, but he hasnt been tested with world class boxers, but he has potential to go far.

The problem with him is, fighting bxrs like katsidis he may win on points, but he will be badly hurt in those fights, as he was against prescot.

  • bruno says:

Mitchell landed twice as many shots as Prescott.

  • The Northfleet mauler says:

I cannot see a basis whatsoever for saying that Prescott won the bout or came anywhere close. My reasons for this are as follows. Prescott hardly put a glove on Mitchell the whole fight and when he did connect, and on the odd occassion at that, Mitchell took all he had to give. At least once in the fight Prescott hit him clean and mitchell didn’t look close to really being hurt.

Ok now to mitchell’s side of things. Mitchell bobbed and weaved and at times made Prescott look amateurish. adding to his frustration
mitchell actually started to assert himself the longer the fight went on and totally outclassed Prescott and actually landed the cleaner shots.

You assert that Khan would wipe the floor with Mitchell, and although I can totally understand Khan wanting to fight bigger names, Khan was ko’d by the man who was outclassed by Mitchell. I think Mitchell/Khan would be a good match up as long as it was at Mitchell’s weight now, as I think he has reached max weight for him, and Khan will enevitably go up in weight.

You sound like the kind of pro American boxer who praises the likes of Dirrell, calling him a slick boxer/mover and then critisize th like of Haye and Mitchell( who both by the way usually trade) but who changed their styles to comprehensively outbox opponents.

Being a journalist you should be as unbiased as is possible, at least when you are writing about it, and you, are clearly biased in your opinion. I do hope that nobody is payin you to write about anything, let alone boxing, of which you clearly do not have a clue you silly boy….

  • Nathan says:

Mitchell won pretty comfortably. Really good fighter cant wait to see plenty more of him.

  • ... says:

khan would rip mitchell to bits he dus not hve tremedous power

  • Paul Mason says:

This guy aint got a clue!!!!

  • milosands says:

What are you talking about? Mitchel won almost every round with ease, he landed more, controlled the ring and dominated the fight. How on earth do you have Prescott winning that fight? How? On what grounds?

Agreeing with Scott is only going to bring you ridicule and no-one will take you seriously.

  • Rubber duki says:

Mitchell schooled prescott the whole fight.
