By Dan Ambrose: In an article by Ron Borges at the Sweetscience.com, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s) talks about why he’s chosen to fight World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s), saying “I could have easily gone on a world tour fighting stiffs and made $200 million but it’s about testing my skills against fighters of my era.” I guess this is why Mayweather fought lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez in his last fight in September. It was about testing his abilities against the best fighters.
However, Mayweather messed things up by insisting on random blood tests to take place leading up to the fight. Eventually, Mayweather’s fight with Pacquiao went down the drain over this very issue. Now Mayweather is looking to fight Mosley in May, and then if he gets out of that fight in one piece, try to work out a fight against Pacquiao later on in 2010.
It’s doubtful that Mayweather could make $200 million fighting stiffs. For that to happen, Floyd would have had to stick around for a lot longer than he’d like and risk taking all kinds of punishment along the way. At 32, Mayweather has yet to show signs of slowing down as a fighter, but as we’ve seen in the case of Roy Jones Jr., another fighter who relies on fast hand speed, Mayweather could start showing problems of slowing down by the time he reaches his mid 30s. By then, he could be finding himself having big problems against even stiffs if he’s still fighting by then.
As for Mosley, Mayweather says that he plans on fighting smart, and focusing on out-boxing the older, less mobile Shane. Mayweather obviously won’t be trying to stand in front of Mosley, not after seeing what happened to Antonio Margarito in Mosley’s last fight. Margarito had little foot movement and was a sitting duck for Mosley’s in and out attacks in their January 2009 fight.
Mosley ended up taking the fight by a 9th round stoppage. The win was a real eye opener for some fans, which saw Mosley as being past it due to his poor performance against Ricardo Mayorga in the fight prior to Margarito in September 2008. However, Mosley looked completely revitalized against Margarito, and fought like his old self from years earlier.
The question is whether we’ll be seeing the Mosley that fought Margarito or the one that struggled to beat Mayorga when he steps in the ring to face Mayweather. It might not matter which version of Mosley we see. Mayweather might be too good for Mosley anyway. Mayweather’s style of fighting, in which he uses movement and pin point strikes is one that Mosley isn’t really accustomed to facing. Indeed, Mosley perhaps has never come close to fighting anyone like Mayweather before. For this reason, it’s difficult to say for sure how Mosley will react to Mayweather’s style of fighting.

$200 million fighting stiffs? Mayweather is probably sleeping during Math class. Statisticslly improbable. Do you think if you keep fighting unknowns they will continue to buy PPV. Maybe the first 3 fights you csn fool everybody. But after that, not even Las Vegas will accept your next fight. So statisticslly, you can probably max out at 5 stiff fights and then you’ll get ZERO PPV buys after. Maybe they’ll pay you $1 million per fight after that…then you’ll need 200 fights to get $200 million. If you have 10 yrs left, you’ll need to fight 20 times per yr to get $200 million.
Statistically improbable….And Mayweather knows that. He knows he needs Manny Pacquiao. But Manny does not need $$$$. He is already rich and idolized in his own country. Maybe Clottey will be his last fight, especially if he wins the Congressional seat in May elections. Manny is no longer interested in Mayweather and like he has been saying in the previous fights, he will have only few fights left and he will retire.
Floyd is obsessed with Pacquiao. Floyd’s idol is Pacquiao. If you do not believe me, watch videos of Pacquiao’s fights where Floyd is watching at ringside seat and you will see Floyd Mayweather jumping up and down, especially when Pacquiao knocks out an opponent. THAT IS YOUR PROOF why Mayweather cannot move on with his life and keep mentioning Pacquiao in every interview he has. He is star-strucked on Pacquiao. But Manny has moved on….and Floyd is left lonely but still in-love with Manny. Just can’t keep Manny off his mind.
Floyd could have had $8m fighting margarito but fought sharmba mitchell instead.

For all you ignorant people who things Floyd ducked or dodged Shane or any fighter who was dominate before he retired, read the article. He called out 5-6 fighters after a fight. He ended up fighting 4 out of the six. The only two he didn’t fight was Kastazu and Mosely. the reason he didn’t fight Kastazu, I don’t know why. Even though people say Mayweather only fights smaller fighters the truth is he’s only fought 2 fighters that were smaller than him. Marquez and Hatton. Kind of like people calling Pacquiao the catch weight king and the only fighter he fought at a catch weight was Cotto.

Look for Bob Arum to set up a Margaritto and Pacquiao fight in the future; If they can get his licehanse back. That is the next move they’ll be pulling for. If Mayweather could beat Mosley and Paul Williams he’d be considered the best of this era with or without beating Pacquiao IMO. Those are the 2 toughest guys I believe you can beat at welter weight besides Floyd, and Manny you could argue even tougher than Floyd, and Manny. Remeber Cotto wanted no part of Paul Williams. I don’t see Pacquiao ever agreeing to the blood test, but If Floyd once to get back the P4P crown all he has to do is defeat the other top 10 welter weights in the division as far as I’m concerned. If he defeats Mosley, Berto, and moves up and beats Sergio Martinez I think he’d be the P4P best IMO. Their are enough big names out their to sale PPV with and still add to your legacy with. No tour period…if they want to fight Floyd, let it be in Vegas..so that’s it. Floyd is fighting exclusively in Vegas…not even Manny can entice him to fight in Dallas, even if it’s 60-40 in Floyd’s favor and the drug test to happen…but you know what? Judging from his statements..he intends to make his fight with Mosley, the bargaining chips! Drop his blood test demand for the fight to happen elsewhere but he gets 60%! So that’s clever. I think the Mayweather camp were smart to hold their fighter back & dodge Pacman, they didn’t think PBF was/is ready {after coming out of retirement} to face Pacman yet. Pacman is a demolisher at the moment.
Mosley is a champion and a very good test for PBF now, but PBF at the moment has a much better chance of winning against Mosley than Pacman.
After so long off while in retirement to have any chance against Pacman PBF needs to harden up again first, to find that old speed & get the speed going again at full throttle, get his legs going again, take some hits, get used to the knocks again. You also have to believe you can do it against a fighter like Pacman or you’re going down very hard.
PBF is not ready for Pacman until he believes he’s got his speed back again, if he ever does. PBF is not as chunky as Mosley so he will not hold his power & stamina through to the age that Mosley has. Mosley is still a bull for his age.
PBF was fast in the past, but we haven’t seen that kind of speed from him since coming out of retirement.
I think if PBF does not get caught by a Mosley bomb (which is very much on the cards unless it’s a fix), then he may be ready for Pacman.

Mayweather will defeat Mosely quite easily. Pacquiao will have a very difficult time with Clottey. Mayweather will demand a 60/40 or more split to fight Pacquiao. Pacquiao will refuse and fight Mosely and lose.

Are you telling us that Mosley is the best fighter and better than Cotto. He lost to Cotto, who was badly beaten by Manny. Did you watched the two fights? Mayweather made excuse the loss of Cotto to Manny was a result of his previous fight with Margarito but the fact is, Cotto beat Mosley between those fights. Manny is not afraid of needles, he just don’t want Mayweather to have psychological advantage. Psychology is not a superstition, it is a science. Maybe you are psychologically incapacitated to engage in mind games which, the Mayweathers are expert. You see what is the “boomerang effect” to them, Floyd regrets and continuously accusing pacquiao of incriminating and unfounded statements. LOSER!

Pacquiao fought already Hatton, Marquez and ODLH and Mayweather fared better against those guys, what makes you think that Mosley-Pacquiao would be somehow different in PPV numbers? The reason why Floyd avoided Manny was because Jr. was simply scared and here’s why. If Mayweather didn’t accept the fight with Mosely and had chosen to fight another lower division fighter like Paulie, his career would be over. So I think he had no other choice but to fight Mosely. Also I just want to be sure he protects his ribs during training and not cancel due to injury. Until the fight actually happens, I will give credit to Mayweather for stepping up otherwise let’s wait til the smoke clears.
@Mansterr, I agree. I think Pacquiao should fight Mosely. In my opinion, with Mosely being old or not, I do not think Pacquiao can beat him. Styles make fights and their styles together point to a defeat for Pacquiao. Mosely would probably win by KO.

Question for everyone on here Pacquaio-Clottley fight first in March and Mayweather-Mosley in May, saying that both Pacquaio and Mayweather win, who’ll be considered the P4P best then? I would think the nod would have to go to Mayweather considering he beat the then 3rd ranked Marquez and is going up against the 3rd ranked Mosley. I think Cotto was 7 and we all know Clottey isn’t even mentioned in the P4P list. I think Mayweather is banking in on this knowing his PPV numbers will surely out do Pacquaio-Clottey and if he wins he’s in the drivers seat once again.

I have realised Mayweather is not appreciated by his own people, so called Americans. In the UK we love Floyd and most people genuinely feel he is the GOAT. I almost laugh when I hear people say Mayweather fights nobody. First off i didnt know Oscar and Ricky were nobody’s. Well at least thats what people say about Floyd’s victories over them but when people talk about Pac’s victories suddenly he beat some of the baddest gladiators around. Mayweather will demand more money because of comparisons of PPV numbers. We all know that the PPV numbers of Clottey/Pacquiao will be dismal, and Mayweather will play on this hard. You can blame all of this on Freddie Roach and Bob . They walked away from negotiations which benefited Mayweather. Pacquiao will pass on the 60/40 split Mayweather will demand. Then he will fight Mosely. He will then subsequently lose. Pushing Mayweathers negotiating power even higher.

I think a fairer comparison would be to Hopkins, not Jones. Jones relied on his hand and foot speed soley. Hopkins, like Mayweather, relies more on defensive and sharp counters. Floyd’s handspeed coupled with his defensive genius is what makes Floyd a special talent. Even with diminshed hand speed, Floyd would still be dangerous and tough to beat. Marquez called out Mayweather while Mosley was busy begging for a fight with Manny. It was a mismatch, but according to the bookmakers and gambling men and women, Pacquiao-Clottey is an even bigger mismatch and Pacquiao-Cotto was only slightly closer. Pacquiao jumped up in weight no problem, but in hindsight it was apparently obvious Marquez couldn’t. Come on its not like ODLH fighting Steve “two pounds” Forbes!!! I don’t remember Oscar catching any flak for his choice of a second tier lightweight! A fight against a hall of fame fighter that took the 1 or 2 p4p fighter to heck and back, is just warm-up to get any rust off. If it would’ve been against Manny it would have been the same thing, a shut-out and in hindsight Floyd just picking on smaller guys. In 2 of his last 4 fights he has been outweighed by double digits!

Mayweather is crazy to think he could make $200 million fighting stiffs. He is one of the greatest to lace up the gloves but has no fan base. Check out his pay-per view draws. With the exception of the Judah fight his opponents are the ones bringing in the fans and the money. De La Hoya was the draw, Hatton was the draw, Marquez was the draw and even Gatti was the draw. I wouldn’t pay $50.00 to watch Mayweather fight a Mathew Hatton or some other bum off the streets. Even in the Mosley fight, I think Mosley will be the draw.
This is a tougher fight for Mayweather, than Pac-man, for a # of reasons.
1. Mosley is not a naturally smaller fighter, like Pac-man, like Marquez, like Hatton, etc. He will not be able to bully Shane, not that he has any sort of agressive, crowd pleasing style anyway.
2.Mayweather may be a half a step faster than Shane. But in his past fights, he’s relied on counterpunching, which is good for a speed guy to do when ther’es a disparaging difference in speed…not the case here by far. In combat, when one is always looking to attack (who is sure handed), and the other is always looking to defend and counter, the advantage goes to the guy on the offensive.
3.Mosley is relentless. He’s not the coward that Mayweather is. Don’t get me wrong, I admire Floyds Gift. But, amongst gladiators, he is unwilling to initiate the fight. He’ll lay on the rope and pitty pat all day. And whowants to watch that crap! Shane comes to fight every time. And the only reason he has losses on his record (he beat Cotto btw)is because he is willing to take the hard fights, against game, difficult to fight guys. You din’t see PBF fighting Guys like V Forest (RIP), Winky, P.Williams, Sergio. The riskiest fight he ever took was against Zab.
