Marcos Maidana vs. Victor Cayo on March 27th

By Eric Thomas: It now looks like World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s) will be facing number #3 ranked WBA light welterweight contender Victor Manuel Cayo (24-0, 16 KO’s) on March 27th, in San Francisco, California. Maidana, 26, was supposed to be facing WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan next. It’s being reported in the news in the Dominican Republic where Cayo lives that he will be facing Maidana next.

However, Khan and his promotional company want to go in a different direction from the knockout artist Maidana and instead are looking to take on 36-year-old lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez. This leaves the Argentinean Maidana needing to get a fight to fill the void. Recently, it was reported that Maidana’s promotional team were deciding on matching Maidana against either World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley or the 25-year-old Cayo, from the Dominican Republic.

It’s now looking like Cayo is getting the call. This would be a huge step up in class for the light hitting Cayo. He’s more of a slapper and is a pure boxer that likes to move constantly. He keeps his hands down by his sides while fighting and tries to use speed and look flashy in his fights. In July 2009, Cayo defeated former lightweight champion Julio Diaz by a 10 round decision.

Cayo looked far from impressive in that fight, appearing really sloppy and showing zero power. He’ll have to look a lot better against Maidana or else he’ll have his head taken off quick.

i would pay for this fight actually which is more than i’ll be doing for that fraud amir con or any of his fights ever again. good luck maidana.

  • bazooka says:

Money talks Maidana missing out on a title shot all because the promoters don’t want Marcos killing the golden goose.

  • mario says:

khan and every boxer who ducks risky fights should be banned from boxing. what happened to the good times when what only matter was having that tittle belt. fighters should not be allowed to choose their opponents… maidana made it clear that he will fight whoever is put in front of him without asking questions. that’s a true fighter

  • arroyo grande bob says:

why hasnt anybody mentioned a rematch with Prescott, whose lost two decisions in a row. When you get iced in one and dont even suggest getting even how do you expect to be taken seriously. Its clear why they want no part of Maidana.

  • Duke says:

i don’t know why this fight and khan vs marquez, campbell vs ortiz, bradley vs judah are not filling out the three ppv cards hbo is putting out there in the next three months. i rather see these fights on the undercards cause i want some bang for my buck.

  • marco says:

    light hitting? wtf

  • emmanuel says:

goyden boy promotions ideas is make events with their fighter only, the reason is simple, make money and don’t share it with no one all four fighters(khan,marquez0maidana,cayo) are part of golden boy promotions squad

  • Bowboski says:

first of all it’s about time there bring boxing back the San Francisco…..It’s gotten to the point where I don’t care who is fighting. I’ll be there

  • Rick Marquez says:

140 is so deep and so talented I’m starting to forget Pacquiao-Mayweather. If Valero wins this weekend (more like when he wins), we need to see Valero-Maidana, to similar fighters with big punching power. When Maidana got up three times after being dropped three times by Ortiz and then went on to win the fight, that was enough to convince me that Maidana is a fighter with a future, no matter how he got his KO’s. An Ortiz-Maidana rematch is a must for Ortiz’s sake.

  • lex_fugitive says:

So Khan ducks Maidana, then Maidana fights a weakling that has never fought any A level fighters??? This is bs. I want to see Khan-Maidana and Valero-Marquez and Bradley-Alexander. Instead they are all dodging each other building up a good record against B and C level opposition. Thank God for the Super Six!!

  • jerry says:

woow guys guys victor cayo is no bum ive seen him fite and honestly think he can beat maidana

  • Kenbodeeee says:

This guy is so hardcore even bradley and the other boys are ducking him

  • RMC says:

Yes Marquez will be tough for Khan that is true as the guy is full of heart!, but Marquez is now 36 years of age and is coming to end of his career. He’s been in some brutal wars, achieved great things and entertained me as a fan for many years but I honestly feel that at this point in time, he’s made for Khan, especially at LWW. Roach and GB promotions know this, Marquez will look great on Khans CV.

I think Khan v Maidana was the fight fans wanted to see, questions still remain unanswered. Vacating titles and not facing your mandatory challenger after only one defence, leave much to be desired. As British boxing fan, but more importantly a boxing fan, I’m slowly loosing interest in Khan as a fighter.

  • ahcaw says:

Maidana is a REAL fighter unlike chicken khan the fraud

  • Oli says:

To Hayemaker Haye- Maidana is fighting another bum because the so called champion doeasnt want to fight him. He would rather fight an old guy who doesnt belong at 140

  • Oli says:

Its come to something when the interim champ cant get a fight with the actual beltholder. The WBA has shown itself a shoddy organisation

Well at least the debate can no end. Now we know once and for all beyond all shadow of a doubt that Amir khan is a protected fighter whos team are cherry picking his fights. This now can be taken as fact

  • Hayemaker Haye says:

So khan is fighting Marquez (tough fight) and Maidana is fighting another bum to help improve his already padded and overhyped KO record
