Manny’s Meteoric Rise – Part 2

By Alexander Fugate: After winning a paper title, Manny hit the boxing jackpot by landing a fight against De La Hoya. De La Hoya’s last fight was against Steve Forbes, at 150 lbs. Oscar’s trainer said after the fight that he “thought Oscar would have had more power than he had.” If the fight would have been at a higher weight. Oscar had been fighting at 154 or higher for 7 years. Boxing analyst Travis Marks wrote afterwards “The troubling aspect about Oscar’s fight last night was that he was at his best, at least he was at his best at this stage in his career.” He went on “…Steve Forbes was never hurt. Forbes surprisingly was able to land some of the cleaner more effective power punches. The underdog caused a mouse under De La Hoya’s left eye, he puffed up the right eye, and bloodied both Oscar’s lip and nose. No one could have expected that.” Mr. Marks went on “Psychologically De La Hoya can not be a good place. “He finished his column “…last night’s bout points to Oscar having a pretty nasty send off from the square ring.” James Slater wrote about the bout “…De La Hoya’s performance against Steve Forbes left a lot to be desired.” De La Hoya had to lose three more pounds and was seven months older. Travis Marks couldn’t have been more right, in his prediction of Oscar’s send off.

Next up for Pacquiao was Ricky Hatton at 140. Hatton had got knocked out three fights earlier against Floyd Mayweather Jr. After that Hatton battled Juan Lazcano. Boxing analyst Jim Dwyer wrote afterwards

“…I was watching…Ricky Hatton absorb tremendous punishment in the 8th and 10th rounds by light-hitting Juan Lazcano, who hurt Hatton badly in both rounds, in finally dawned on me that Hatton, perhaps, can no longer take a big shot at this stage in his career. Some people are of the opinion that Hatton’s chin was damaged earlier in his career.”

After this Hatton beat the feather-fisted Pauli Malignaggi. Then against Pacquiao he suffered another knockout.

Then in his last outing Manny Pacquiao took on welterweight Miguel Cotto. But he made Cotto fight at a catchweight of 145. Also worth noting, is the fact that Shane Mosley, who’s regarded as the best welterweight, had been practically begging for a fight with Pacquiao. He offered to go down to 143 and a 60/40 purse split for Manny. If that was his opening offer, Manny surely could have gotten an even better deal. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach was even quoted on Insidefights.com an official partner of Fox Sports as follows: “Shane came to the gym twice to ask me to let him fight Manny… I told him “no” both times, and both times for the same two reasons: First, there isn’t enough money there, and second, you’re too good a fighter.” Cotto on the other hand had suffered a horrendous beating by the possibly plaster-wrapped hands of Antonio Margarito. He took an easy fight and then he fought Joshua Clottey. Cotto-Clottey was an extremely close fight that Cotto won by decision, but some thought Clottey should have gotten the nod. After that bout Frank Lotierzo wrote on thesweetscience.com “The reality is Cotto isn’t an overwhelmingly strong welterweight. Miguel Cotto is no longer the catch and kill style fighter he was earlier in his career.” Teddy Atlas on ESPN following the fight said Cotto “…looked like the ghost of Margarito was hovering over him…it looked like Cotto was in some ways pscyologically suffering.” Then before his fight with Pacquiao an article by Brett Okamoto ran in the Las Vegas Sun, stating “Roach has said many times Cotto hasn’t been the same since taking the worst beating of his career in an 11th round TKO loss to Antonio Margarito.” Roach was then quoted as saying “’… a fighter is …not the same following a knockout like that.” The column continued “Some agree with Roach that the 29-year-old fighter looked different in a 12 round split decision with Joshua Clottey.” Manny Pacquiao went on to prove people right again by battering a Cotto that looked shot for 12 rounds. Now Manny has turned his attention to the Clottey. Yes, the same Clottey that lost to a shot Miguel Cotto.

In review, after his first title defense ended in a draw against Marquez, Manny fought the loser of Barrera-Morales III, Morales again when he was coming off a loss to Zahir Rahim, Oscar Larios coming off a loss, Jorge Solis, Barrera coming off two narrow victories over Juarez and getting dominated in his last fight, a rematch with Marquez that many feel Marquez won, the easiest title-holder at 135, a washed up De La Hoya, a Hatton that could no longer take a punch, and a shot Cotto. Now a fighter who has lost to Carlos Baldomir, Margarito, and a loss in his last fight to Cotto. It seems like Manny Pacquiao continually picks someone coming off a loss or coming off a victory in which it is widely reported that the fighter looked like a shell of his former self in the victory. Now that many consider Manny to be a top pound-for-pound fighter its time he starts taking on opponents like a top pound-for-pound fighter.

@realbox… is there any argument there worthy of discussion if you keep on talking about Manny as a juicer? There simply is no PROOF there my friend. And whose fighter you’re saying were matched to Pacman that were beaten before by your god? DLH and Hatton? Have you noticed how easy for Pac to destroy them as against how Floydie RUN against them? And this is something you and Floyd have in common: TRASH-TALK, you both THINK you are good in boxing and just about anyone else is ignorant. I wouldn’t mind you loving Floyd to death so long as you keep it to yourself and do your expert boxing opinion without sidestepping my national source of pride. Peace.

  • Jason Alcairo says:

    KO

in this day and age,if steroids are so hard to detect how come there was a light heavyweight who popped,Julio Caesar Chavez Jr popped, shannon briggs popped, and they were all caught using URINE?! you don’t think they used everything they could to not get found out?

  • Realbox says:

    @crottyruh.

Thats all? no argument regarding the post besides attacking me?…

Please, it doesn’t personally bother me, it bothers me that his career is extremely overhyped, all the fights that pac fans glorify are against opponents that, if Mayweather hadn’t beaten before the fighters were way past their prime when matched against pac, instead of attacking me personally, tell me of one fight that contradicts what the writter posted.

I have et some pac fans thta actualy know about boxing, but MOST of you are ridiculously ignorant! and just can’t believe that someone has an opinion that doesn’t glorify you one and only national source of pride.

  • Floyd says:

  • Shadow Boxer says:

One sided article to say the least. I’ve never understood why there are so many Pacman haters out there. I’m guessing it’s because he´s not american like Big Mouth Floyd (no wonder europeans question the wit of americans). Don’t forget that Floyd has up until now has also been a cherry picker. The only reason he’s fighting Mosley is because he painted himself into a corner. I am not a Pacman fan. For instance I would have liked to see Marquez get his deserved victory over him and I wish that Cotto would have beat him but as a boxing fan I still enjoy watching him fight because he is a good fighter.

  • crottyruh says:

@ realbox….. tell it to the marines….. or BWAA…. HAHAHA!!!!!

  • Realbox says:

“Too bad BWAA already voted OVERWHELMINGLY for Manny as the Fighter of the year and Fighter of the decade. So your write up is nothing but garbage.”

    Right…

So you are saying that if you are roided or a juiced up cherrypicker it doesn’t matter as long as you get an award for it?.

    Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

  • MP says:

Too bad BWAA already voted OVERWHELMINGLY for Manny as the Fighter of the year and Fighter of the decade. So your write up is nothing but garbage.

  • JOSH says:

    @ Rob,

Are you some of those… know what , know how, know why wannabe? you know a lot about how to talk baloney and I mean pure crap is what you’re bringing here. That EPO/HGH must have ruined your ability to rationalize the art QUACKING!.. “HGH/EPO/Steroid can make the size of your head 20 times bigger? ” That right there is product of ligitimate idiot. THINK,… a baseball times 20 becomes a basketball size ball. Think again,.. manny wont be able to walk with that head size.

Pac’s head size never changed except for one thing,.. it’s the haircut that has change. And for people like you who does’nt have the ability to think normally, you came out exposing your crap filled brain by saying things you don’t even know. I pity you for inheriting that kind of thinking from the Mayweather clan of thugs.

Next time have the shame and restraint to keep your stench within your colon..y.

  • KO says:

Yes, steroids mess up your body, but these days, they are highly tailored and are VERY VERY VERY hard to detect. Even with blood tests. Urine testing is useless at best.

  • roys says:

I had a friend, who died 3 year ago of taking steroid, cancer of neck,a body builder.and another friend, lung cancer doing treatment,it will affect you 10 year later.sad but people still think its a magic thing, both of my friend were very stiff, its bring you bulk and high strung,

  • KO says:

Simple, testing 5 days out of the fight solves this problem. Even the most cautious doctors will tell you that max physical effect is 3 days. I understand the issue of cutting weight and eating after a test, but the real immediate physical effects on the body after a blood test can be countered with a small high sugar snack.

  • roys says:

that didnt come out right lost my connection.in a catch weight fight, they decide what fighting weight to fight.in cotto fight.its was pac a 149.lb so he build weight to 149lb,and 2 or 3 days before weight in he fast ,no eating,to make the 145lb then he can eat all he want he will rehydrate back to 149 lb.if you give blood you cant eat,for 2 or 3 daysbut you need to eat to get back the blood.so you will be weak, but floyd not ative a pac so it his avantage.

  • roys says:

ko. yes if you have given blood or did a blood test .the nurse will tell you ,not to drive, get lot of rest for a fews days, and eat a healty meal,to rehydrate she give you a paper what to eat.catch weight fight you need to fast a few days before weight in,the you fill up back to that weight night night.

  • KO says:

@roys – are you saying that a blood test given a few days before a fight will effect a fighters ability to perform? This isn’t about Pacman and FMJ, this is about possible abuse of PED in boxing.

  • roys says:

KO @ why he wont do the test ? its pride, manny hold the ww belt he the active fighter to beat ,floyd was retired he let floyd cut in line and he fight him in 3 month after a fight.what does blood do? its carried oxygen to your whole body.when you sneeze what happens ?you see floating stars. who more active floyd a counter puncher and throws 400 punch a fight or manny who throw 700 to 800 punch a fight. right…so if pac gives blood and who is less arcrate puncher throw 500 or 600 pnches he could lose the fight.

KO thank you for being rational and not blinded by the knockout…The similarities between Pacquiao and Mcguire/Sosa are remarkably similiar in that the performances they put forth helped bring their respective sports back to life.. Baseball was dying after the lockout and Boxing was dying due to UFC and lack of a big big name guy.. The lockout killed baseball but the record chase between sosa and Mcguire literally saved baseball because people loveeee the long ball.. Boxing was also suffering and then came the knockouts by Manny one after another and now Boxing is back in the mainstream and a sport that people are caring about again… Our society loves home runs in baseball and knockouts in Boxing it’s that simple.. Manny didn’t do steroids and mayweather never said that…Manny is not on steroidsss! Manny in my mind is using HGH (WHICH I HAVE USED AND CAN TELL YOU WORKS AMAZING.. i COULD DRINK TIL 5AM AND THEN RUN 8 MILES AT 9 AM WHEN I WAS AN HGH GUY). Stamina is what HGH really does that helps a boxer just like EPO helps breathing andf stamina… Read HGH side effects and big head is the bniggest one and if you can’t see MaNNYS HEAD IS 20 TIMES BIGGER IN THE COTTO FIGHT THEN IT WAS IN THE mARQUEZ FIGHT.. aND IT’S NOT A COINCIDENCE PACQUIAOS TRAINER COMES FROM HGH/EPO LAND (CANADA) PLEASE..

excellent article spot on dont know why this hype surrounds the ultimate cherry picker

  • KO says:

Rob, you post regarding performance enhancing drugs is DEAD on. It’s not 100% proof, the big head, muscularity with weight gain, increased power combined with the lack of testing, raises a huge red flag. With the kinds of $$$ involved and the kinds of drugs available, why wouldn’t a fighter resort to PED’s. Granted, u need need to be a world class boxer in the first place…

  • Rob says:

Whoever wrote this article isn’t factual knows nothing about Boxing period.. You can’t quote somebody unless they actually made those comments because of legal issues so you need to get your facts straight buddy because this is a great article… The bottom line is that you people love Pac-Man the way we all loved Mcguire and Sosa because they hit they hit the long ball and everybody loved them knowing fully they juiced out of their mind right?? Manny and his knockouts are the same exact thing as a homerun and that’s why you guys love Manny because I guarentee half of your meatheads didn’t even know who he was until the Oscar fight.. The picturesw don’t lie pac fans his head has grown massively I just don’t get why you are in such denial.. I loved Mcguire and Sosa and they saved baseball just like Manny has saved boxing and I guarentee we will see Manny admit it or gewt caught at some point down the road… And let’s not forget he cheated on his wife jinkee, yes it’s a fact and if you can cheat on your wife (which is one of the worst thing you can do in this world) in you can cheat when it comes to your occupation and making way more millions then if you didn’t cheat

  • OGURAT says:

Mr writer you said that manny s only fighting washed up fighters; if you said cotto was a washed up figther ONLY 1 loss when he fight manny, hatton also only 1 loss and some fighters with 1 or 2 losses and etc. but you forgot that manny already hav 3 losses b4 that so he’s also a washed up figther with 3 losses. But why is it that mayweather is afraid of a washed up figther like pacman!!!

  • tiger1223usa says:

  • マリア小澤 says:

Oh my.. If this writer is an American and all Americans are like the Mayweathers then I can’t blame bin Laden.

  • bangus banger says:

Well now, this article has its view, but no answer for Manny to fight a worthy opponent next after Clottey. Manny is now at welterweight after the Cotto fight so he’s just going down the list and start picking on the top welterweights like the winner of the Shane/Floyd fight. And he can fight both, one after the other.

  • Mike says:

How can anyone in their right mind say Manny has not taking anything?Look at how much size he has put on and is still ripped?Look at how big his head has gotten in the last couple of years!
I am not dissing Pac as everytime he fights I’m right there to watch and am amazed at his speed, power and ability to move so well! The fact is I am a trainer,(both boxing and weight training) and have spent years in school and at the gym, working with bodybuilders and such.I have seen guys with crazy genetics who put on muscle very easily but not as “easy” as Manny has over the last few years. Many guys at the gym do HGH and riods and they ALL have one thing in common besides putting on great amounts of quality looking weight, their heads also got way bigger!

  • Joey says:

ALEXANDER FUGATE trying to discredit Pacman just showed how stupid your reasoning skills are. This article is a classic example of a trying hard wannabe. Not about boxing, not about being a hater, but FUGATE being stupid.

  • Pacnut Stooge says:

the pac stooges who worship his every move have to be pissed. screw them losers, pacnut is MAYBE the fifth or sixth best boxer now behind valero, may, mosley, williams, martinez. he ain’t worth even 1 cent of pay per view. the pinay ladies love black cock. just an fyi.

  • Mike says:

Fighters now days go through a war or two and most think they are now washed up?! LOL
Many of the fighters in the old days fought dozens of wars and kept going for long carreers! Man,people today are very uneducated but think they know mit all!

  • Mike says:

    Alex D Fagot er lol

Manny the greatest fighter of all time?
How old are you?Have you studied boxing history? The answer has to be your very young and you DON’T study boxing history! The fighters back in the day fought 100+ times and had as many fights as most guys do now a days before they even got a title shot!Sugar Ray Robison, have you heard of that name?
If anyone truly thinks Manny or pretty much ANY fighter today is as good as Robison ws they truely DO NOT know boxing!

  • pala otog says:

90 percent of this article is pure opinion. This is stupid? Mr. writer you should write next time base on a fact. You should give Pacman a credit by saving boxing he deserve were credit is due. Boxing is in the right path right now thanks to PAC. Try to be on the right side on the game if you know what I mean.

  • Ijo Dep Utah says:

Where did you get all this bull s**t story. If this people you mention in this article read it. They can sue you, get to the facts not speculation.

  • mehater says:

another hater ,who ever manny fights they always says its old,not good, drained after manny KOed them, but i didnt hear anything of this before the fight, even his opponent will say they are on 100% condition.a hater will always be a hater no matter how good you are.

  • tiger1223usa says:

    @ rob you on coke

  • Rob says:

This article is absolutely correct and as a Pac-Man fan I hate to agree but he is right in the fact Pac-Man is a cherry picker. The evidence is very clear and just as Freddie Roach is protecting the weak chin of Amir Khan he has clearly done throughout the career of Manny Pacquiao. Who has Manny fought that is actually in their prime??? Marquez and he won both fights in my opinion. I hate to say it but Pac-Mans last several fights have been with washed up bums and I hate to say it about Cotto because he is the reason I fell in love with boxing after watching him fight at the Madison Square Garden years back. Now he fights Clottey and I mean cmon can he fight anybody bette then Joshua the 6 round and then gased Clottey? I think Manny is a good fighter but def not great because if he was he would never have fought Oscar, Hatton, or made Cotto fight at 145 because Champions take the biggesst challenges.. And if you think Pac-Man isn’t on HGH AND EPO YOU’RE CRAZY… lOOK AT HOW BIG HIS HEAD IS COMPARED WITH 5 YEARS AGO..It’s not as obvious as Barry Bonds, but it has def. grown big time since Alex Ariza, his trainer the man from Canada where HGH AND Epo is legal and the same place where tiger woods hgh/epo supplier was recently arressted…open your eyes people head size doesnt change after the age of 25

  • crottyruh says:

and who is the real true champion and not a cherry picker, Floyd Mayweather?

  • Realbox says:

Is there no way an article is ok if it doesn’t kiss pacs as$?

This is exactly the way a lot of people see that cherrypicker’s career!, it’s just that since they are smart people they can’t afford to argue with some ridiculous fanboy that knows absolutely nothing about boxing.

Things you can find in any article that isn’t written from inside pacs a$s:

    “big fool hater”
    “bias article”
“This writer neds to get a life”
    “pacquiao hater”
    “should not write again”
“Manny is the best boxer of all time”

And other fools have even written 5tup1d sh1t like:
    “bring on the Klitschos”
“many is the Michael Jordan of boxing”

Please!, be a fan but don’t be 5tup1d about it, kindly disagree and make a point instead of personally attacking the writters.

I happen to agree 100% with the article, when manny takes the tests and fights real opponents instead of has beens and old retired people he’ll begin to look loke a true champion and not a cherry picker.

  • JwGacey1 says:

    Who?

  • olympic medalist says:

The great Muhammad Ali had his jaw broken and lost to Ken Norton. He was knocked down with both feet in the air and had a disfigured face in Frazier-Ali 1. At this writers standard, Ali was a shot fighter after those losses. But history showed otherwise. Ali came back to beat both Norton and Frazier and all the great heavyweights in that era. Duran, Hearns, Hagler all suffered losses that in this writer’s standard should have been shot fighters. But they came back to regain lost glory. History repeated itself. So, how do you really define a shot fighter, Alexander Fugitve? Here’s a suggestion: “A shot fighter is one who was beaten in previous fights and knocked out by the fighter you hate”.

  • boxer 101 says:

Then who should Pac have face then?
    John because he beat Marquez…
    Mosley because Cotto won…
    Malignaggi over Hatton…

    No arguments except lightweight

  • boxer 101 says:

Pac avoided Barrera? When did you hear about that? It was Barrera’s promoters who didn’t want an immediate rematch with Pac. What a biased writer…

Pac faced the best except lightweight…
    Mosley faced the best also…
… both and guys fought bigger fighters than their size.
Mayweather faced the best, a long time ago when he was a lightweight… above lightweight, he’s questionnable.

The difference between them, Pac lost one and won most of them by KO.

  • REALISTIC says:

Pacman is worth alot of money now so naturally every time he fight him and his team especially bob arum are going to analyze what fighters they are going to face. pacman has the entire phillipines on his back so every time he fights they are going to look for some kind of edge of there opponent. i dont think pac has always picked shot fighters but i do think ever since he became a top rank fighter his career has been ill say “cared for”. manny is a good fighter i will say but i would put him with the G.O.A.T cast. i just hope him and mayweather fight in the (Fall season) so it can be proved who is the p4p king. and i also hope clottey and some how find a way to win and shock the world.

  • rotsen's comments says:

C’mon dude open ur eyes accept the truth and go on with ur life..that is if have one..LoL

  • Pic says:

Why do people try so much to belittle Pacquiao’s accomplishments? The Boxing Writers Association of America have voted Pacquiao as the Boxer of the Year as well as Boxer of the Decade. I’ve read that the vote was overwhelming in Pacquiao’s favor! In a democratic society, the vote of the majority should be respected. Instead of praising a poor boy who rose from abject poverty to become the best boxer of the decade and a 3-time boxer of the year, why do writers do all they can to downplay his achievements instead of putting him up as role model for impoverished kids? I just can’t understand people like this writer. Maybe when Pacquiao has long retired from boxing then you guys will get over your hatred for him and write soemting npositive about his meteoric rise to fame and glory. Pity . . . .

  • Fan says:

Mayweather is a negro who is vocal and doesn’t play into the uncle tom image. Bob Arum tried to turn him into this uncle tom fighter. He isn’t a yessir black man. Anytime a negro is vocal he is portrayed by the media in a negative light. Remember Ali was hated by the American Media for the longest. Black Athletes are to be seen not heard. Terrell Owens, Barry Bonds, AI, Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones are a few of these athletes. American is still one of the most racist countries in the world even tho there is a mulatto in the white house. Mayweather was one of the top P4p fighters for the whole decade. and never took and LOST OR A DRAW. The top fighter in the decade can’t say that. Mannys 135, 140 and 145 title as the article wrote about are a joke. I mean Manny is a good fighter but he has no defense can’t fight inside or off the ropes. he is a entertaining fighter I love to watch Manny fight just like I loved to watch Micky ward vs gatti but i knew they both werent great fighters. Manny hasn’t had a good win on his resume in year and that is a fact.

  • WUT?! says:

  • WUT?! says:

lol a loss is a loss, fighters move on, if they can’t then they should retire and not bother going in the ring again.. the fact that they went in there again and signed the contract to fight, tells you something..
I’ll give you an argument which pac haters and floyd lovers use… do you have scientific proof that fighters lose their skills after a loss? how does liverpool win after a massive beating? how does Lakers? point is, when two people go into that ring its a two way street, one wins or the other does..
if they won, isn’t pac giving them the come back of a lifetime?
next time you play any SPORT, don’t cry about your losses and move on… that’s what most people do

  • Alex d Faget says:

There was only two fighters that could be fighter of the decade. Manny or Mayweather. The loud aggressive black fighter with hip hop ties. Or the quite asian fighter. Who do yo think the white media will vote for. Do the same thing to Mayweather career and see if you have the same story of PBF fight losers.

  • kaizer says:

    @ Ryan,

i think it’s a good idea. just state the fact objectively like your other post. let the people decide and weigh things over.

  • Punchy says:

This writer “Alexander Fugate” should not write again. It was
not objective and not good for boxing news 24. You should not be a writer and should not watch ou should be watching soap opera instead!

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Let me guess….. You don’t like him?

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

I want Ryan Dunn to write about Pacquiao’s Meteoric Rise. Clear and Balance writing is whats needed in this site.

  • Ryan Dunn says:

What a sad misdirect of a title. This is a case where sarcasm doesn’t exactly translate into text. You’re entitled to your opinions, of course, I just wish the title said something more like:

“Why Manny Is Overrated Part 2″

It makes me think about writing a retort about Manny’s REAL meteoric rise, and show you how little it actually has to do with his selection of opponents or compubox numbers.

    …ryan

  • cali says:

this guy is a real dirtbag… fighter of the year means pac has been fighting for ten years count it on two hands maybe u only have one! probably being the reason u write! all the top fighters out there has been fighting for just as long and yup even floyd, he retired for a year and a half, big deal he fights once a year anyway! but during those ten years manny was picked ask yourself y! ask yourself who else is out there that has been fighting top opposition, whether they have loss or not if they are at the top of their division they are at the top for a reason! so to discredit mannys matches because his opps have losses i say that is a hypocrite move and a stupid way of looking at fighters accomplishments, and if we did not look at losses then everyone would be a champ and sports would be nothing more than a little league soccer or baseball game. ” just go out there and have fun” your trophy will b waiting for you. just stupid! who is your fighter i bet i can find reasons to discredit him too!

  • kaizer says:

    @ too much talk

man, imo the reason why this people hate pac that much is that,

they lost so much cash betting against pacquiao.

so I give them the “L” sign..

    Losers.

  • lailedesma says:

Gee, you sound so jealous, pathetic actually. you try to convince yourself that pac is not that great, but you know all along that he is. why not change your field of work. go get a life man, stop causing too much anxiety to yourself. try not to write anymore.anyway good luck to you and next time just try to accept reality.

  • kaizer says:

    what a loser.
man, as vince carter said after making a spectacular dunk.. “it’s over!”

pac is the fighter of the decade.
pac is the fighter of the year.

Nonetheless, you still have your boy jmm grab the next fighter of the decade award.

    stop sour graping. losers.

  • lex_fugitive says:

So, finally the facts are brought to light. So many insisted that these were only excuses after Manny beat them. Personally, I am a boxing fan, and Manny Pacquiao is a great talent, but it frustrates me that he constantly refuses to fight the best. His last three opponents all had numerous articles written about how they looked done before Manny was ever mentioned as their next opponent. The question I have is why did people get mad at Floyd for supposedly ducking, yet when it’s clear as day that Manny is cherry-picking opponents, all we hear is Manny’s great, quit hating. Manny is exactly what’s wrong with boxing, he always refuses to fight the best. Maybe when Mosley is 45 Manny will fight fight him. Manny is too close in age to ever fight Mayweather though. All you Pacfans, honestly, wouldn’t you like to see him fight the best???? He has fought three elite fighters, Barrera I, and MArquez twice. Other than that he’s always ducking. Come’on why does everyone hold Mayweather to one standard and Pacquiao to a much lower one??? Is Manny that bad that he can’t be expected to fight the best??? I’ve seen Manny fight and he looks great to me. Now I want to see him fight another great fighter. That’s definitely not happening March 13.

  • Al says:

Leonard,Hagler,Hearns,Duran,Tyson, etch. are all time greats that came from a loss or worse a knockout but still considered all time greats because they can come back and prove everyone how great they are. Then we don’t give Pacquiao credit for winning against opponents that are considered to be greats and future hall of famers that came from a loss. This is a sport that there will always be a winner and a loser.Fortunately it is Pacquiao who keeps on winning and his opponents are the losers.

  • ray jamero says:

mr.fugate you should fugate writing boxing articles youre not boxing analyst why dont you start writing tabloids bring sugarman with you we dont care!!!!!

  • Elwyn says:

What a LOSER Writer! All he can do is DISCREDIT PAC’s RESUME–What a hater?! Why not enumerate the 36 Awards that Pac has received?

  • Don King says:

Soo anyone who has beaten someone with a loss on their record or a tough fight beforehand or has been knocked out before has automatically waited until that opponent was a shell of themself to fight them, thus discrediting their accomplishments?is that how that works?Judah lost to Baldomir but Floyd fought him anyways.Gatti had been through wars with Micky Ward but Floyd fought him anyways.DLH had been taken out with a nasty liver shot by Hopkins but Floyd fought him anyways.Get the hell over yourself.

Btw,Marquez and Pac tied but Pac should have been the winner because of a judging error from the three knockdowns he scored.Marquez probably should have won the second fight but it could have gone either way.

  • waltz says:

whatever! unfortunately for you, Manny Pacquiao is now the Fighter of the Decade. you can scream all your hatred in front of your computer, but Pacman has just put his name in the boxing history. what can you do?

  • tiger1223usa says:

@ suger man/mp is not an all time great yet after mp beats clottey then am ,them fmj he will be!!!!!

  • Juan Manuel Marquez says:

When i get knocked down, I put both my feet up in the air. I am bald and my body has no cuts and definition. Tell me, who in their right mind would idolize me? PACMAN’S opponents were not good while I choose the best opponents: Casamayor, Diaz, Chris John who kicked my arse, and Mayweather who made me look like I dont even know how to box.

  • Gene says:

Having titled it “Meteoric Rise”, it’s obvious you are a very jealous guy.

  • nino says:

    wow

you must really hate paq that much….

So let just say BWAA is a fool then for voting him fighter of the decade and fighter of the year then. NOT….

well it just prove that in every great fighter there is always a hater.

  • SugarMan says:

Great article dude; you literally summed up Manny Pacquiao in a nutshell and I think it was a wonderful job. I don’t see how anyone could argue or disagree with you.
There are so many fans that would think otherwise but I agree with you 100 percent!!!
Manny is not an all time great and he would need to face and beat the likes of a Timothy Bradley or Valero and not just face first fighters or weight-drained fighters.
Oh and BTW, beating a Floyd Mayweather or a Shane Mosley would do wonders to enhance his stature. He will really need to use PEDs to get a desire affect!!! lmao

  • chicken says:

JMM likes to kiss the canvass with both feet up in the air. JMM is one of my favorite comedic boxers because you can be knocked down, but why do you have to raise both your feet up in the air??? Why do you have to drink pee? Why do you think you won when one of the judges admitted scoring the first round of the 1st fight wrong. Why do you have to challenge Mayweather when you can hardly beat Juan Diaz and you lost to an unknown Indonesian? Why do you have a Japanese boyfriend? Why is your style boring? If you are so great then why does pacman make 10x as much money than you? I pity JMM and all his blind fans. Put your feet in the air!!!

  • shut up says:

ha!! ha!! you sounded like a big fool hater.. you must be drunk with marquez’s pee!!! why jennings couldn’t beat cotto if cotto was a shell of his self!!! all other great fighter has lost on their record and come back and become greater fighter!! what a crappy author you are!!! biased and subjective author.. perez!!
