Klitschko-Chambers: Can Eddie out-box Wladimir?

By Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers (35-1, 17 KO’s) has great boxing skills and some nice wins going into his title March 20th title fight against International Boxing Federation/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (53-3, 47 KO’s) next month. However, it’s hard to see a case where the 6’1” Chambers will be able to out-box the 6’6” 245 pound Klitschko and win the fight. The bout will be taking place at the large ESPRIT arena, Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, where there is expected to be as many as 60,000 fans in attendance.

There won’t be many fans of Chambers at that fight, because Klitschko fights out of Germany where he is a big national hero to many of them. Chambers, without much size or power to speak of, may have to rely on his boxing ability and hand speed if he wants to have any chance of beating Klitschko.

Giving up six inches in reach to Klitschko will make it tough on Chambers to land continuously against Wladimir unless Chambers can work his way on the inside and stay there for considerable amounts of time like he did in his recent win over top heavyweight contender Alexander Dimitrenko last year in July. If Klitschko lets Chambers work away on the inside, it’s possible that Chambers could beat Klitschko by a 12 round decision.

However, Wladimir isn’t going to make the mistake of letting Chambers punch on the inside for extended amounts of time like Dimitrenko did. Instead, you can look for Wladimir to tie him up to prevent Chambers from throwing a lot of his shots. On the outside, Chambers will have only a small chance of winning because Klitschko, unless he’s lazy, will be jabbing him continuously with his powerful jab. Chambers has a decent jab of his own if he can get into range to throw it.

But he’s going to have to adopt an in and out style of fighting much like welterweight Manny Pacquiao if he wants to score often against Klitschko. That is certainly a possibility, because Klitschko is sometimes slow to react to attacks despite having very good hand speed. However, Klitschko also has big power in either hand and if he catches Chambers coming in with one of his big shots, he could put Chambers down for the count.

Chambers has shown a good chin in fights against Samuel Peter and Alexander Povetkin, but those guys threw shots that were much easier seen than the big shots that Klitschko could be hitting him with. At the same time, Klitschko doesn’t throw hard shots all the time. He likes to trick his opponents by throwing weaker shots and then all of a sudden loading up on a big right hand that they’re expecting or don’t see. Chambers will have to possess a great chin in this fight just to stay upright long enough to make it to the final bell.

AND STILLLLLLL THE STEELHAMER DR WLADIMIRRRR …. YALL KNOW THE REST!!

  • jackson says:

povetkin backed out of the fight twice with vladimir, not the other way around, once with an injury, and once because his new trainer said he wasnt ready for vladimir yet…too green…i admire the honesty of that, but povetkin needs more snap in his punch if he wants to be a champion…unless of course he wants to fight for david haye’s paper championship

  • Niels Probst says:

It is like someone just tells me, that Chambers is very underrated.

  • john says:

yukan…..I am from North America and I agree with your whole statment, they will KO everyone they fight…..and yes they are among the best ever. I don’t understand why they are not given due credit…..maybe cause alot of people that write in on these things don’t know boxing…..

  • yukon says:

Klitschko will out box and then KO who ever he fight’s fact is people in North America can’t handle that a person from Europe is dominating the Heavy division for the last 4 years and more years to come.!! I think Klitscko’s have proven they are the greatest fight’s ever on this planet!!! the ony excusses Norhty Americans say is the divison is weak False!!
    Fact Klitchko’s are Great!!!

  • patpump says:

In Ireland they believe in Leprichans, in England they believe in Haye, He will never fight a Klitchko, he doesn’t even deserve a shot, Let him fight Areolla, James Toney, Chambers…he’s far from quality…….he won’t be around for long he might get past Ruiz but after that he’s over with thank goodness

  • mohit kumar says:

haye to beat both klitschkos within the first 8 rounds they wont know wats hit them his hayemakers are DEADLY!

  • z says:

if they were the same height then yes he probably could outbox him, but 5 inches is a lot to give up.

  • stu says:

no-one in the hw division can outbox wlad. catch him with a lucky punch? maybe. outbox him? not a chance.

  • FEDOR says:

I think is very unfair that Chambers can fight against Klitschko before Povetkin. Povetkin is the guy who can beat Klitschko, so Klitschko doesnt want to fight him. I think that is scandal.Povetkin waits from Jan 2008 till today and longer. Povetkin beat Chambers so how he can prferes to fight Chambers

  • BIG G says:

  • Hudson says:

Fast Eddie was impressive against Dimentrenko…a man similar in height/weight to Vladimir with a 6 inch reach advantage. Fast Eddie was simply too fast with his hand speed and got on the inside of Dimma.

He is a worthy opponent to VK.

  • Duvo says:

he can’t and simply will not. He looked great against Dimitrenko, but one constant in that fight was the fact that even in his concerted effort to move his head he did occasionally get tagged by jabs and straights when Sasha kept distance. First things first when Wlad keeps distance you gotta be a bull to even get inside on him and Chambers ain’t a bull, secondly Wlad’s jab is much more accurate and much more powerful than Sasha’s. At first I gave Eddie a fair shake on this one, considering he put an olnus on keeping in superb shape, but after I seen where his weight was at that press conference in Germany, I’ve got no confidence in him. Anyone who knows me knows I can’t stand EITHER Klitschko, but fair play to Wlad if he does stop him or win impressively…Eddie will be one of the few LIVE opponents that either Klitschko has faced in the last 6-7 years.

    BTW:
David Haye beats BOTH Klitschkos :)
