Judah says he was contacted by Golden Boy Promotions about Maidana bout

By Eric Thomas: Former light welterweight and welterweight champion Zab Judah (38-6, 26 KO’s) was contacted by Golden Boy Promotions about a fight against World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana (27-1, 26 KO’s), according to Boxing Talk. Judah, 32, said “Yeah, they reached out to my pops, but the numbers they were talking, it’s like they were speaking Chinese to us. It’s like I told you yesterday, if they ain’t coming with Oscar, they need to keep my name out of their mouth.”

It looks like Judah wants to be well paid if he’s going to be sticking his neck out against a big puncher like Maidana. You can’t really blame Judah for not wanting to take on a dangerous fighter like Maidana if he’s not going to get a big paycheck.

At 32, Judah would be facing a lot of heat if he was to step in the ring against Maidana. Judah hasn’t been all that active in the past two years. Judah has fought three times in the past two years, defeating Ernest Johnson and Ubaldo Hernandez, while losing to Joshua Clottey by a 9th round technical decision in August 2009.

Judah may be wasting time, though, if he thinks a big money fight will fall into his lap. He needs to try and stay marketable by continuing to take on good fighters. It can’t help him to be fighting obscure fighters at his age.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer recently mentioned Judah’s name as a potential future opponent for Amir Khan, should Khan get by his next fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. However, if Golden Boy Promotions wants Judah for a fight against Khan, they’ll have to pay him well from the looks of it. A Khan-Judah fight would likely be a fairly popular one, especially if Khan is able to get by Marquez in his next fight.

Many people dont understand the politics and business behind boxing. Guys its not as simple as Zab being offered a fight and taking it or leaving it. These promoters are scumbags and all want to sign the fighter for a long period of time. It may sound like a good plan to sign with golden boy or another promoter but every fighter will tell you that they regret ever signing with promoters. Give Zab a chance. He is a great talent and right now is in superb shape. You will see that after 1 or 2 more tune up fights Zab will fight a big name and win. He is focused and in great shape. Thats a deadly combo for someone with Zabs talent.

ill dance around u like my names zab judah —-wu–tang–clan– lol

Wow, you go JED. But I think you right. Judah has been very dangerous to the best in you list, who was Tzu & then Mayweather. He got caught by Tzu’s massive power, up until then it was Tzu’s toughest fight for along time. And Judah rocked Mayweather with alot of good punches but could not match the speed & accuracy.
But I agree with KING D, that was a different time.
The real King Kostya Tzu is retired , Mayweather’s best days are well behind him,(i think it’s a mistake for him to come-back, but we’ll see).
Judah should retire. He has been hurt alot more than Tzu or Mayweather.

I’ve been a huge Zab Judah fan from day one back when he had hair lol, but he has no discipline. He should have been gotten rid of his father as his trainer because once he’s in trouble Zab never does what he says anyway. His game plan going into every fight is to try and knock the guys head off at 140 and below it worked at 147 and above it hasn’t

  • Duke says:

judah is punch drunk if he thinks he deserves a big fight. if a fight with tim bradley at 140 comes up, he should be begging for it. judah is too small for welter. 140 was always his best weight.

  • J says:

people seriously underestimate Zab Judah, had he shown the proper discipline he could have been the greatest P4P fighter for many years. Even though he’s on his decline he can still be very dangerous for many fighters in the welterweight division.

I cant stand all this d bags above me hating zab judah the guy is a force to be reckoned with he has great speed and power to burn at 32 hes in hi prime i think a math with malignaggi would be sound beat him and get a title shot at the winner of devon alexander vs juan urango ! zab is my favourite fighter and needs respect hes been in there with spinks cotto mayweather corley millet tszyu clottey baldomir and people say hes fought nobodys?? hes not ducked anyone hes brought it in every fight iam sorry if i sound like a fanboy but you all can suck my 8 inch

  • q says:

I’m from BK and will co-sign Zab Judah is done. He wanted to party too much, not disciplined like PBF. He is too arogant if he thinks he deserves another big fight w/o earning it. He lost to Cotto and Clottey, both currently walking stiffs. Damn Zab…How far the mighty have fallen.

  • a fact says:

zab judah actually lost to clottey in 2008

  • g-man says:

yea i think mallinagi be a winable fight for juda pauli has no power at all it takes him 3 shots to kill a mosqito!!…lol.

  • oscar says:

he should take the fight his been beaten by every big name and still gets the big fights its a joke. why would kahn talk about fighting him its madness

  • big t says:

zab is the truth…Spinks,Clottey,Cotto,Mayweather,….I Mean even if he has lost 2 all those dudes he’s CV is better than all of these so called pound for pound fighters…if dude wanst 2 get paid y not….

  • Poor noynoys says:

He doesn’t have a strap, no big wins, not even fighting big names, and the guy wants to be paid? I mean, c’mon. He should talk with GBP about getting on the Mayweather-Mosley undercard or the Khan-Marquez undercard, I mean, damn, the dude needs to get some exposure already. It isn’t like Zab’s gonna headline a PPV anytime soon.

  • juan says:

this guy is done, he can’t even beat baldomir. juda is the story of immense talent wasted and expectations disappointed. it started with kasta tzu and finished with cotto. but that is of course, according to all of us not named zab juda. he put his work in yes, but as far as demanding big money? na, dont think so son. he aint hungry so why give him a shot anyway. i am sure gbp will hesitate to ever call him again seeing his behavior this time around. would you call a guy back after he put the business out on the street like that?

  • talo says:

Well, I think judah can still come back.
He can fight hatton ( both of them), or he can fight berto or collazo. Mallinagi is also a good choise.

  • Poor noynoys says:

What the hell is Zab doing otherwise? It’s not like his phone is ringing off the hook. He’s a quick southpaw with some pop on his punch, he could make easy work of Maidana if he’d just fight a smart fight for once. Snatch that belt, and get up in the mix. Or sit on the sidelines while everyone else is getting paid.

  • King D says:

Zab Judah, his fighting days are over. He doesn’t deserve big name fights or a big pay day. He’s just stepping stone for young and upcoming fighters.
