Jones: “He [Hopkins] wants to fight me now because he thinks I’m finished”
By Jim Dower: Boxing great Roy Jones Jr. (54-6, 40 KO’s) had some amusing comments to make about light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins. In an interview with Boxing Fanhouse, the 41-year-old Jones has this to say about Hopkins: “17 years is a long time to be scared. You [Hopkins] think I’m done, but you’re wrong. The only reason he’s fighting me now is because he thinks I’m finished. He’s been scared of me like a rat with a cat. He didn’t want to step into the ring with me until was almost finished. Now he [Hopkins] has no other place to go cause they talk to him to fight Chad Dawson. He [Hopkins] don’t want to fight those young dudes, cause he knows he can’t beat them. Now he figures he’ll get his last hurrah. Let me play the lotto. Let me see if I can get lucky against Roy Jones Jr. No he can’t. He’s got a huge head. Like a block. Like a potato.”
The fight isn’t as appealing at this time for boxing fans because both fighters are over 40-years-old and no longer hold major titles. Hopkins hasn’t been very active in the ring as of late, fighting only once in 2009, beating middleweight contender Enrique Ornelas by a 12 round decision in December. Jones has stayed busy since 2008, beating Felix Trinidad, Omar Sheika and Jeff Lacy. However, Jones has lost two out of his last four bouts, suffering defeats at the hands of Joe Calzaghe and Danny Green.
In December, Jones as stopped in the 1st round by International Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Green in Australia. Jones never really got a chance to get warmed up before getting dropped early in the 1st with a looping right hand that connected towards the side of his head. Green then pummeled Jones with punches after he got up until the referee stopped the bout.

all i can say is i’ll be taking Roy Jones Jnr at $ 4 + on the sports tab for a win. Easy money i reckon.
he underestimated green and got knocked down (not out ). This fight while some people think is not important, is important to them.
PS our Danny Green is ready, willing and able to take apart any american champ. Our fighters always find it hard to get the recogintion cause the yanks always refuse to fight even on there own soil.
too many belts, too many ego’s and too much money. Should eb more stripping of belts for not fighting legitamate challengers.
who would ever know who the best boxer is ?
bibie of boxing
i agree what you have just said. Lets hope that big name american boxers like hopkins tarver williams and dawsen start saying yes to fighting adamek and danny green and stop saying no when they will make more money fighting green and adamek than the boxers there fighting.
mike
well said it is good we are on the same page.

Bhops exscuse for not fighting Green was weak,no arguements.I also think,(have a feeling) that RJJ will outpoint Bhop again! Bhop has had trouble with speedy fighters in the past and styles make fights. So we do agree more than we realized but I can’t say Bhop proved no different than RJJ over not fighting Danny Green. Bhop is NOT scared of Green but realizes at this stage of his carreer he is NOT looking to get hurt but as someone with great power and youth could do to him even when he was at his best!(Which he is still close to without the worry of being hurt!) That worry has also caused him to avoid Chad Dawson agter shooting off his mouth! I too get anoid at these antics as all I want to see is the best fighting the best, dam the politics!!!
mike
i cant wait to here your excuse when roy jones wins. and i do agree with you on jones. but hopkins is the some he proved that by not fighting danny green. which hopkins would have made more money fighting green than jones. but he knows he has no chance of beating green so he goes against jones.
the reason they never had a rematch is that roy only faced opponents who agreed to a smaller purse. “70-30 i beat your a**”. he wasted his talent…or just hid his deficiencies…fighting bums. don’t know why anyone considers him a great tbh.
Bhop looks for the easy fights? LOL Man its hard talking to people who are dillusional, just like their heroe RJJ! LOL
Look at the guys RJJ has fought and compair them to the one’s Bhop has fight!
Enough said!
Bhop is still a top flight fighter,Jones hasn’t been for a long time!
I love how most think people’s primes go,after a certain age its over! LOL Everybodies different and so many people are so mediocre in the way they think, too easily “told” how things are instead of thinking for themselves and coming to their own conclusions!
This is why the American government is so messed up,the people do NOT think for thmselves anymore!

Get your facts straight before you tell somebody else too! I have been following thier carreers since the beginning and even watched their borring fight. I have watched numerious RJJ fights and Bhop was right there calling him out! What was RJJ’s response?
“I already beat you so why should I fight you again?”
Then there was quibling over money.(They are both guilty of that!)
Bhop was the runner? LOL I’m not even going to argue anymore with a comment made in ignorance!
I guess most forget the nickname,”reluctant Roy!” (forgot that RJJ fans always forget the nickname!)
Bhop has sought out the best throughout his carreer but in the last few years is looking to make money only which is a regret.
RJJ spent the majority of his carreer taking out a microscope before accepting any challenge!
Good fight for Roy. Everyonw is talking about how washed up Roy is. B-Hop will not be able to catch Roy and Bhop will only throw 40 punhes a round. Roy looks bad against fighters in their prime. Bhop is far from his prime.
to mike it was hopkins who runs.Get your facts right. jones will win easy. hopkins will always look for the easier fight. hopkins has just shown again that by not fighting danny green . at least jones shown heart and took on danny green.
Bhop avoiding RJJ?! LOL
Bhop did everything he could to get RJJ back in the ring, even showing up at his fights and post fight interviews!RJJ was not leaps and bounds above his competition when he was in his prime,if he was why did he duck so many fighters who called him out?Yes Roy,many of us still remember the nickname “reluctant Roy!”
Hes right you are and have been finshed for 5 yrs mr. Jones and you were never that good anyway
still got all his beans up top so keep fighting , at this advanced stage of his career its more about making money than fighting hungry young guns , name of the game is matching your style up against a style you can beat .
RJ:”He’s got a huge head. Like a block. Like a potato.” HAHAHAHAHA. Every one is doubting RJ but i believe he’s gonna shock everyone and beat BHOP once again.
ROY UR FINISHED BUT IF UR STILL GONNA MAKE MILLIONS FIGHTIG , WELL WHY NOT, I WOULD!
Hey Roy; Stop Frontin! U ain’t wanted nothing to do with Nard since the first fight! U talkin like you really gangsta or like you didn’t systematically duck n dodge Nard forever! You and Mayweather are really looked at like circus clowns in Philadelphia!
Roy man leave it your finishd
