Is Valero the Savior of boxing?

By Stephen Tannock: So Edwin Valero kept his perfect record together on Saturday against Antonio Demarco. Is Valero boxing’s messiah? By that I mean is he the only man who can beat the top ten at the minute. On one hand, his record is awesome – 27 wins, 27 Ko’s. Is he in the top 10 pound for pound for boxing?

No. Valero hasn’t really fought anyone with star quality. No disrespect to the other boxers he has fought but Antonio Pitulua and Antonio Demarco are not comparable to Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander, even Junior Witter. Valero has the weapons to knock out all the above and most of the others in weight regions. Can he roll with the big dogs?

Paquiao, Cotto, Mosley, Berto, Campell, Katsidis are all names who he should want to aim towards instead of the Paulie Malinaggi and Juan Diaz’s of the world. He is rumored to fight Bradley in a fight I personally want to see. Not whom I would fight if I was Valero because I would want Amir Khan or Ricky Hatton first but it is a very interesting time in the life of ‘dynamita.’

  • heavy G says:

Valero is all action and fun to watch. Very good power, especially in the left cross.

It seems that a quality boxer-puncher could capitalize on Valero’s technicial deficiencies: he holds his hands low and his mouth open the entire fight. But to now, nobody has been able to do that.

Not the savior of boxing (as if boxing needs one), but another action fighter who can force dramatic fights.

  • crottyruh says:

Valero has 27 wins and all of them KO’s….. he must be on steroids.

  • Glass Joe says:

Valero looks like he has some great abilities, but let’s face it–he still hasn’t beat a top fighter

  • Jwill says:

    Um…Jasz,

Your choking on something. Give Pac his d!ck back now. This article is about VALERO not Pac. Read people.

  • jasz says:

Roach said during an interview (check in Youtube – search: EdMagikTV Freddie Roach on Manny Pacquiao vs Oscar De La Hoya) that they will fight Valero tomorrow and Manny will knock him out in 2 rounds. Pacquiao ain’t afraid of anyone. Like he always says, he’s just a fighter, its up to his promoters and trainer to choose the fighters he will fight.

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

    Valero is still too green.

  • sedfaasdf says:

george foreman got a better record than him

  • Jwill says:

Savior of boxing?? Huh?? Who wrote this crap? There are so many good fights and fighters out there. Most of the idiots who blog just don’t know it. You know why? The problem is simple. Unless you REALLY follow boxing and all of its shows, you would think boxing needs saving. I’m talking to the casual fans with the big mouths who only know the big names, and are stupid enough to buy any pay per view event. You know, the d#*k riders. Valero is no savior. Good up and coming fighter that’s it. Yall bandwagon too much and too fast. Sickening!

  • chinquanto says:

Duke you are right as long as fighters are protected and Judges can bebought the Game i love will go down its too bad im 71 yrs old and I think some of thes current fighters are the best ever

  • chinquanto says:

This Kid is the real deal he will beat anyone or come damm close anyone that gets in the ring with him will know he was not Shadow Boxing

  • carl says:

Not really. he should past the best in junior welterweight and try one of the top ten welterweight before he fight the P4P kings like pacman and Floyd.

  • TopoKid says:

Valero should stay 135 for a couple more fights. He looked good but not as strong as in his last bouts. Should make exciting fights with Michael Katsidis (strong will, straight foward slugger), Ali Funeka ( solid tall aggressive fighter), champ JJ Marquez ( great boxer/counter puncher, with good punching power and an exellent boxing mind) and maybe 130 #1 Humberto Soto before he tests 140

  • lex_fugitive says:

If Valero fights Bradley he will be exposed.

  • juan says:

    i agree with jose,
i think gamboa is the next big thing in boxing. to become great you have to have power and raw talent yes, bet there is something more important that those qualities. you have to improve between fights and actually get better from fight to fight. gamboa showed this when he showed patience against mwgata. valero seems to be a smart fighter, actually much better defensive than i expected again demarco. he made the longer reaching demarco miss all the while staying in the pocket to deliver his shots. that was very impressive. what sets the great ones like pacman apart is that they not only get better from fight to fight they can change thier styles and follow a game plan with discipline. since we haven’t seen valero tested all we can to is wait and see.

  • roys says:

qoute{Is he in the top 10 pound for pound for boxing?} stop it your confusing new comers ,that why I hear a few saying their fighter could be a p4p when they have 1 or no title at all. the king of the p4p is he who has the most title of different weight classes, that oscar 5 floyd 6 pac 7and also older fighter hence floyd or manny.

  • zee zee says:

    valero fought bums, but hey,

yes valero, david haye, david tua, amir khan are the saviour’s of boxing. thomas ademik too.

  • Boxingfan3 says:

Ok well valero is good but like they said when the fight is on he hasn’t really ever fought anyone that good except Demarco but that’s a bad style for the fight I wanna see him get in there wit someone who knows what he is doin and maybe we can tell

  • jose says:

    NO WAY JOSE. GAMBOA IS.

  • hmmmm says:

I woulden’t go as far as savour but this guy is defently the next big thing i think the savour of boxing would be a fight between floyd and pac-man, but sadley it dosen’t look though its going to happen :-( they have broke the heart of alot of boxing fans.

  • concerned in LA says:

Valero throws wide and I think a more schooled fighter could take him. Bradley is very technical and balanced, while punchs straight up the middle. Bradley also throws a mean overhead, ask Junior, he never saw it coming and landed on the canvas.

  • El boxer says:

El inca is a warrior.I think this guy is going knock miss PAC man on hisass.and valero don’t use steroids.

  • Ijo Dep Utah says:

He’s got potential to be a good if not a great boxer. The 27 win is not enough to call him the savior. He need more exposure and fighting big name boxer.

  • Gene says:

A fight with Bradley or Khan would be exciting.

  • blance_boy says:

expect valero to struggle most of his next fights, if he does fight the top 10-15 fighters lightweight up to light welter. he is not just in there yet…

  • MBA says:

Well, he wants to prove himself…and I guess Bradley isn’t really an extraordinary fighter but just a pretty good one. And to think Valero isn’t really getting any younger…might as well aim high and hit the point. To a certain degree I believe he hasn’t fought anyone of Bradley’s caliber or any of the boxers you have mention but he always has a puncher’s chance to win ky knockout!

  • milosands says:

If Valero beats Bradley (especially if he stops him) he will walk into the P4P top 10 list – hell, he may even walk into the P4P top 5… but not just yet.

I love the guy and hope his record stays exactly the same, imagine a retired fighter who is like 45 fights, 45 wins and 45 KO’s… it doesn’t bare thinking about, lol.

  • nottrippinyet says:

I like Valero, because he is part of the new breed of aggressive southpaws, which pacman is still leader of the pack. His aggressiveness and straight left remind me of pac’s, and his work-rate is similar to pac’s, but his footwork and speed are still not up to pac’s level. Also, he has to prove he move up in weight, and most importantly, beat a real someone. Impressive as his vistories are, he is still a long way from being elite. He is exciting to watch, and I would spend money watching this guy box a good opponent.

  • Ignorant says:

Mayweather has now put Valero on his “Boxers to Avoid List”.

  • Frankly says:

I thought PBF was the savior of boxing. Remember that he is going to clean up the sport. That would mean Valero needs to abide to PBF’s random blood testing.

  • Pauli says:

His is an impressive rcord, no doubt. But can he hang with the big dogs? That is the question. We all await the answer.

  • KO says:

Bradley vs. Valero would be an awesome match. I’d like to see Valero tested more.

  • mikeeee09 says:

valero is a strong man, but he hasn’t fought any of the top dogs

  • Blood and Guts says:

I don’t think so, I want to see him fight Bradley first before he can be praised. Valero has flaws and I’d like to see if his next opponent can exploit them.

  • Duke says:

boxing doesn’t need to be saved by an unproven knockout artist. it needs to be saved from itself by having the best fight the best.
