Is Pacquiao’s career complete if he doesn’t fight Mayweather?

By Esteban Garduno: In the teleconference call yesterday, World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao said the following: “I believe I don’t really need to fight Mayweather because what I have actually done in boxing right now, I think is good enough for me.” But is Pacquiao’s career really complete if he doesn’t fight Mayweather? I really don’t think it is. Pacquiao fought few recognizable opponents from the start of his career until he fought Marco Antonio Barrera for the first time in 2003. By then, Pacquiao had been fighting for eight years and had won titles in the flyweight and super bantamweight divisions.
In 2008, Pacquiao won a controversial 12 round split decision over Marquez in a rematch, a fight in which many people still think Marquez won. Pacquiao never gave Marquez a rematch. Pacquiao fought David Diaz in 2008, but he wasn’t considered to be the best fighter in the lightweight division at the time. Pacquiao then fought and beat and old Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and then most recently Miguel Cotto.
Those wins were good. However, none of those fighters were considered to be the best in their divisions at the time that Pacquiao fought them. De La Hoya was old, Hatton was more or less shot, and Cotto still hadn’t looked the same after taking a terrifying beating at the hands of Antonio Margarito in 2008.
As such, I think even with a win over Joshua Clottey, Pacquiao’s next opponent for March 13th, he needs a win over Floyd Mayweather Jr. to ensure he has a lasting legacy. The wins over Diaz, Barrera, Morales (who beat Pacquiao in their first fight), Marquez (a questionable draw and a controversial win), De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto just aren’t enough in my view to make me think that Pacquiao’s career is complete.
He just doesn’t have enough wins over fighters that were truly considered to be the very best in their weight divisions for me to see Pacquiao’s legacy as a shining one. Hatton, Cotto, Morales, Barrera and the questionable win over Marquez just isn’t enough.
Pacquiao needs to give a rematch to Marquez, still fight Mayweather and ideally Shane Mosley for me to even consider Pacquiao as a great fighter. Without wins over those fighters, then I see Pacquiao as merely a good fighter but not a great one. Unless Pacquiao can find his way into and out of those fights without losing, then I don’t rate Pacquiao as one of the best fighters of all time. I see Pacquiao as having lost to Marquez twice, and I think Mayweather and Mosley would likely beat Pacquiao as well if given the chance.

Just turn around the situattion. Mayweather needs to fight Pacquiao to prove and solidify his legacy. It’s that simple folks.
yes. you’ve seen him fight. not his problem that he’s in an era where the former hero and claimant to the crown is a chicken duck. 7 titles in 7 wt divisions! are you kidding me? cleaned up the tough Mexicans, including the legend Morales and dela Hoya. And don’t even talk about washed up. Not Manny’s fault if the other fighter can’t get his act together.
I’d say quit now while on top and enjoy the rewards.

As far as what Mayweather was asking for, and why. IMHO, it’s simple…he’s a small WW too. He has moved up from through the weight divisions, just as Manny has. He was KO’ing people (not everyone) at the lower divisions, just as Manny has. He got to WW, and clearly does not have the same pop, unlike Manny. They are not the same type of fighter of course. But, they are both facing guys who are coming down from the high 150′s and low 160′s, presumably, to make the WW limit. Those guys are NATURALLY bigger men.
In fact, who–in this era–really has maintained, strength, speed, power, and increased punch resistance, when moving up from those lower weights? Marquez, only put on 10 lbs to fight Mayweather, and he did not look stronger, as fast or faster, and hit harder. Manny was rocked, at the lower weights, by JMM, in fact. This was only about a year or so, before he fought Cotto. He was also KTFO, earlier in his career, by less known fighters. But, because, of the wars he’s been in, throughout his career, against better known fighters, he’s escaped the “chinny” moniker. When Floyd got to JWW and felt Corley’s power, it showed. Manny, on the other hand, invites a bigger man, Cotto, to hit him, while he lay on the ropes and laughs, like he’s being tickled…strange, to say the least. Clearly, he had NO respect for the “bigger” man’s power. He made Cotto, a guy who has a 75% KO pct–who has been fighting naturally bigger guys than Manny his entire career–look like a weakling.
Granted, Cotto did not appear as big and strong, as he did against, SSM, Margacheato, and Clottey–he, actually, appeared leaner against Manny. This is, obviously, due to extra weight he had to shed. But, the point is, Cotto has been hit by bigger, and, presumably, stronger men, and was not as buzzed as much or as fast, as when Manny hit him. Some of this can explained by the fact, that Cotto is not nearly the dominating force he was, pre-Margacheato. The rest can only be explained by what appears to be Manny having more pop than the avg, WW? You don’t think other people raised an eyebrow?
Being the all around sports fan, that he his, Mayweather understands that that we are in the steroid era. He looked at Manny’s atypical performances, conferred with his advisors on the matter, considered the opinions of other figures in the sport, put two-and-two together, and decided to not fall victim to what he felt Manny’s other “victims” had. That ain’t being scared man, that’s being SMART.
This MMA guy Fedor Emelianenko is asking the same thing from the current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem. He’s basing his request, for addtional dug testing, on Overeem’s increased size, over the years. But, Overeem, has NEVER tested positive for banned substances. But, wants this third party screening to take place, BEFORE, they fight, or there will be no fight.
This is, virtually, the same damn scenario, as with Floyd and Manny, donkey.

He did it because, Cotto was clearly the easier target, with a WW strap. As I’ve mentioned, Roach told SSM he was “TOO GOOD”, for Manny, at that time. ROACH said, in order of difficulty SSM was #1, Cotto was #2, PBF was #3. SSM was and still is considered the BEST @WW. He was ALSO, a champion.
What Manny and Co. did was prod the WBC commission, into creating a temporary WW limit of 145 lbs, and a BS “Diamond Belt”, for such “illustrious” occasions, as this. Virtually, the put Cotto, at a disadvantage, while having him put his championship, on the line vs the CHALLENGER. YES…THE CHALLENGER was dictating to the CHAMPION. The same thing Pac fans, CLAIM that Floyd was trying to do to Manny. The difference is Cotto, allowed that to happen to him–with some resistance, but not enough. He thought he would settle it in the ring. Did not happen that way. That’s why the negotiations are so important. Trying to do things AFTER fight is not best way to handle these matters.
Ultimately, tt’s ALL about MONEY, donkey, for PAC, MAYWEATHER,COTTO, the COMMISSIONS, etc.

@Kray: I wrote this earlier, this is what I think the Mayweathers had planned:
Maywethers plot was ruined by Pacquiao starting at the Hatton fight, the same day Mayweather jr made his come back announcement. HOW? Mayweathers were so sure that Pacquiao would lose to Hatton that Mayweather Jr. chose a gimme fight with Marquez awaiting a Hatton victory. So Pacquiao loses to Hatton and everybody knows that Hatton wants a rematch with Mayweather. Mayweather fights Hatton again and easily becomes P4P again, but then Pacquiao beats Hatton in just two rounds, Mayweather Sr. is so embarassed after talking so much crap to Roach publicly, Sr. comes out with Pacquiao is on something. Then Pacquiao beats Cotto, Mayweather Sr says he don’t want his son to fight Pacquiao. Public demands a Mayweather/Pacquiao fight, Mayweather Jr. backs his fathers accusations. Next they figure that they can get away from fighting Pacquiao by asking for a fight in March, knowing about Pacquiao’s injuries, they figure Pacquiao would back out. A 4 month turn around, fighters usually do a 6 month turn around before their next fight. Pacquiao agrees, Mayweathers are shocked and start looking for another excuse. Thus comes out this Random Olympic style blood testing which by the way has never caught an olympian cheating. Now they have Dela Hoya playing the game, Dela Hoya who claims after the fight with Pacquiao that Pacquiao’s punches never hurt him, is now saying that Pacquiao’s punches feel like a real welterweight so he must be on steroids. Mayweather was lucky Pacquiao gave him a 50/50 split. Now Mayweather is saying no way will he give Pacquiao a 50/50 split if he wins against Mosley, another excuse not to fight Pacquiao. Mayweather better win against Mosley because I doubt if Pacquiao would give him the time of day if he loses.
@Kray:Sorry, I still don’t buy it. There is something fishy about the Mayweather. For someone as talente to demand somthing that no other boxer in the history of the sport has just tells me he does not want to fight.
Cotto beat Mosley so it was only right to fight Cotto first. You have to understand that Pacquiao was testing the waters at 135,140 and 147 just like other boxers would have, but Pacquiao took on a couple top ranked fighters. Hatton and Cotto are no chumps and because Pacquiao won, the Mayweathers claims Pacquiao is on steroids damaging a fighters image. Mayweather went up in weight too, Jr. went all the way up to 154 and has not lost. Why is nobody questioning that? You said that mayweather was hesitant to give SSM a big payday. I see Pacquiao walking away from $40 mill as the same, Pacquiao denied Mayweather a big payday. Pacquiao is the champ, not Mayweather. Mayweather being the challenger does not dictate the fight. I believe that SSM and Pacquiao were never in Mayweather’s list of boxers to fight.
PACQIUAO SHOULD FIGHT WITH MAYWEATHER IN HIS OWN COUNTRY BEFORE HE STOP BOXING. OR JONES COWBOY’S BILLION $ BE TRANSFERRED TO ROME’S COLISEUM. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.

No mayweather and mosley are the only boxers capable of beating pacquiao so if pacquiao does not fight eather of these opponents his carrer will not be complete.And to slightly drift of the subject considering that cotto beat both clottey and mosley i think he is due a fight against mayweather i meen ricky hatton got beat by mayweather and still got his shot at pac-man so why should cotto be out of the aquasion because he lost to pacquiao (ON A NIGHT HE CLEARLY WASNT AT HIS BEST.) Pac doesn’t need to fight Floyd to complete his career because the result is too obvious, Pac will put Floyd back to eternal retirement to where he once belong. Pac has done “everything” under the sun to earn his place in the sport of boxing. NO one, not even Floyd can steal it away from Pac. If the fight ever happens, Floyd can look at it as a favor and a debt of gratitude to have ever fought the P4P king, the fighter of the decade, 7 divisions championship title, numerous best figther awards, etc, etc. In fact, it will be Floyd’s career that is not complete because he will just be the #2 guy until he unseat the #1, who is Pac.
@kray: how can you say Cotto was a no name, he was knocking every opponent out and was undefeated. Mayweather did not give Oscar a rematch because Mayweather knew he barely got away with a split decision. So 3 years 2 fights, Pacquiao has two fights as a WW in less then a year and a half with top fighters. As far as following Mayweather, everything I have written down come from reading all the blogs. There is always money to be made in boxing, I guess that is what it is all about for Mayweather, not the fans. You said it yourself (high risk/low reward), So how is Mayweather better if he does not take any risk. I can’t buy the excuse for retirement either especially from a man who claims he has never taken a beating in the ring. Mayweather had nowhere to run against Mosley when Berto pulled out. If you don’t follow Mayweather, as you said, you are sure talking about him, like you do. If you are boxing fan, not just a pac fan, you were more than aware of Mayweather, before he retired. Before Pacquioa’s meteoric rise, PBF was the top Guy, in the sport. He forfeited that spot when he retired.
He came back saying he was the P4P Guy, because, he feels that he his. AND, most importantly, it draws interest. It’s called MARKETING…notice he does not have promoters doing this for him. He has to get out there and market himself, and his matches.
As for as Pacquiao’s 4 lineal titles…good for him. Floyd was not fighting at WW for 5 years, before retiring. He retired for 2. So, that means he only fought in the division for 3 yrs, before returning last year. While he was there, he fought the most SIGNIFICANT fights, for his career, he could. No different than what Pacqiuao is doing. He also moved up, and fought his dream fight, with ODLH, on ODLH’s terms. He fought, Hatton because Hatton called him out, and there was money to be made. Hatton was no stranger to WW division either. In fact he moved up year prior to fighting Floyd, and took a WW strap,in a fight against Luis Collazo.
He had options after the Hatton, the winner of Cotto and Margacheato (high risk/low reward), would’ve been and option, ODLH rematch would have been the other (low risk/high reward). But, he no longer had the drive to remain in the sport. He said the same thing, after the Baldomir fight, 2 years before. Even the money he could’ve made with ODLH again, was not enough motivation. So, it made sense to retire, while he was satisfied with his career. Not only that, he was fortunate to have not fought Margacheato, had he remained in the sport to fight the winner of Cotto v Marg. Or else, he would have gotten the plaster treatment.
Like I said, Pacquiao’s showing at WW, will be no better than Floyd’s, should he retire after Clottey. Names like Cotto and Clottey were not well known, during Floyd’s first tour @ WW. So, Pacquiao came at just the right time. Floyd, came back because, he wanted to make some money, and he had, once again, had the desire to fight whomever is said to be the biggest star, in the WW division. So, he left no doubt who the #2 P4P was, by beating Marquez, then pursued the #1P4P Guy. That did not work out, so he took plan b, and is fighting the #3P4P. I’d say he’s picking up, right where he left off.
People need to grow up. I’m a Mayweather fan no doubt about it. But I give credit where credit is due. Pacquiao has handled his business in the ring. I don’t think he’s fought the best competition but I respect the fact that he fights at a high level every fight he doesn’t fight down to his competition. If his competition is inferior then Pacquiao destroys them and that’s how it should be. I give him respect for that. But Pac fans gotta start givin Mayweather credit. Stop talkin about what he does or says outside the ring and start givin him respect for what he does inside the ring. Just because he’s a smart BOXER not a brawler does not mean he’s a runner. Just because he’s looking for big money fights does not mean he’s a ducker. Afterall didn’t Manny pass up on Zahir Raheem (who just shutout Eric Morales) for a fight with Morales? I don’t hear any Pac fans saying he ducked Raheem. And when did we start name calling in boxing? Mayrunner, Mayweather, Flomos, Pacroid, , Pactard. I gotta say the pinoy fans have really changed the way we talk about boxing before you could talk about what fighter is better without all this b/s. But bring in Pacquiao and his fans and now we got all the name calling. It’s very childish and it shows a lack of respect for the sport of boxing and proves that most of them are not boxing fans they are just here for the ride. A real boxing fan can talk about boxing without having to call out childish insults about fighters over the net.

That was because JMM knows how to dissect a fighter’s style. And Manny is predictable, to a fighter with a high Boxing IQ and good defense. Floyd is a greater technician than JMM, with much better defense. He does not try to come forward and brutalize most of his opponents, because, he can throw fewer punches and land more, than them, while avoiding getting repeatedly hit with clean shots. That’s the formula for beating ANY fighter. You can’t expect to KTFO every opponent. Manny is the opposite. When he’s not attacking his opponent, he is getting hit. His style is purely offensive, and he’s mastered it. But, his style has not changed that much over the years. He ‘s been working on “Manila Ice” (his right hand) for a few years now. And he seems to finally have gotten it right, and is using it effectively. But, good defense and a stiff jab and/or straight right hand, will disrupt his timing and make him miss. Manny does not need Floyd to define his accomplishments. It’s already written in stone. The doubt are only on the doubters. The question mark hanging over his name was put there by the Mayweather family. Historian will have their field day but we know they will lean toward the truth. I think regardless of who you fight, you can still be a “great” fighter. That goes for Pac and Mayweather. In this day and age, its hard to fight everyone. I am a HUGE Mayweather fan, and I think Pacquiaos resume is pretty good. So is Mayweathers. I do believe, in order for the either of them to go down as an all time great (resume wise), the both of them will have to fight eachother. But let me make two quick points. Even tho I agree with this article, its easy to say that about fights (odlh was old; hatton was done; cotto was shot), pac still needs to go out there and fight.

Hold up a minute Pac fans, Pac didnt actually win 7 belts in 7 different weight classes. If you remember, 2 of the belts were vacant. So all he did was basically walk across two of the belts and picked them up, he didnt fight them and win them. So he has 5 earned belts, same as Mayweather.
