Hopkins vs. Jones II: Is this a pointless fight or what?
By Chris Williams: It’s been ages since Bernard Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KO’s) and Roy Jones Jr. (54-6, 40 KO’s) last fought.
I can only imagine where the boxing fans are today who witnessed the fight between these two aging warriors seventeen long years ago in 1993. And I doubt if the fans who saw that original fight or new boxing could care about wanting to see them fight now after all these years now that their into their 40s.
Jones was quick to explain away the loss, blaming it on a variety of things. Hopkins, too, sided with Jones, saying that the bout was stopped too quickly by the referee. However, it’s scary to think what would have happened to Jones had Green been allowed to continue to pummel him for the remaining 58 seconds of the round after knocking him down with a right hand. As bad as Jones looked in getting stopped by Green, the last thing I want to see is Roy going out and fighting an even better fighter than Green in the form of the 45-year-old Hopkins.
That’s not to say that Hopkins was a better fighter than Jones during their prime years. Jones pretty much proved, at least to me, that he was the better fighter of the two in beating Hopkins with only one good hand 17-years-ago in May 1993. But if Hopkins and Jones wanted a rematch, they should have done it within a year or two after that fight instead of waiting all this time.
It’s no longer interesting for me considering how badly Jones has slipped as a fighter. Jones has lost five out of his last ten fights and his only wins have come against guys that were either shot or on the margins of the 1st tier. That’s disappointing given how truly great Jones was earlier in his career. I don’t mind seeing a great fighter fighting a little beyond their prime like Jones, but I do mind when they start getting knocked out and dominated by fighters that wouldn’t have laid a glove on him in his prime. I expect Hopkins to easily win this fight, but I can’t really give him much credit if he wins. I think Jones would have handled Hopkins with ease during most of his prime. Only now do I see an avenue where Hopkins can win because he’s held onto his skills better than Jones.

Jones Jr vs Bhop II could not have happened at a better time. Bernard the “Executioner” Hopkins, will not be satisfied until he has a W on his resume against Jones Jr and Superman Roy Jones Jr not only needs a W but a second win against BHop, a current P4Per would make him look even more like Superman since his last loss came at he hands of the Green Machine who placed illegal Kryptonite in his gloves to put Superman down.. therefore stay tuned for a rematch against Green sometime near the end of 2010 or early 2011. Nevertheless, I believe RJJ still has enough remaining in his tank to get past Bhop, and he will finish the Executioner, execution style and with both hands this time. Futhermore, when he beats Bhop a second time… what will everyone say when one of the current P4P fighters take a L. Answer… maybe Superman Jones isn’t washed up like we thought. Everyone, it’s not over… Jones will win the next 2.. and you can count on that. Also… retirement for Superman Jones Jr will not be happening anytime soon! So get your popcorn ready, Jones Jr is here to stay!
Give us a break.I would not watch this fight on free T.V bad enough PPV
solini well said jones win easy on points.GREAT FIGHT TO WATCH WOULD BE DANNY GREEN VS THOMAS ADAMEK WHO HAVE BOTH GOT GREAT SKILL AND BIG HEARTS WHICH WOULD BE ENTERTANING FIGHT.
Roy is past his prime, he should just retire! he has nothing to prove
Styles makes fights, people look at what Hopkins did to Pavlik and look at Danny Green jumping on RJ, let’s be realistic when has B-Hop ever jumped on someone. This will be a technical fight that comes down to who gets tired first. Considering B-Hop doesn’t throw many punches, like 25-35 a round I give the edge to Jones.
surely this fight is not going to be PPV. why would someone waste an there money and time watching the canvas loving legend and the cheating slimy hopkins.
b-hop beats roy jones jr prime vs prime. the hopkins jones beat was the same guy getting knocked down at mw by mercado. he was so green. he arguably reached his peak in beating tarver at light heavy ten years later.
jones is very lucky b-hop went on to become a great boxer. his record is almost entirely bereft of big wins if you take that one off. & the only reason he fought hopkins was beacuse he was ducking benn, eubank & nunn at smw & he thought hopkins would be an easier fight. right at the time, i suppose.
when you consider hopkins could have fought chad dawson, joined the super6 or whatever, then yes its totally pointless. roy jones now is just irrelevant somebody please take his licence away enough is enough. wat does this fight mean? nothing
if RJ beats hopkins what is every1 gonna say…
that hopkins was old and washed up??
people are doubting RJ cuz he lost 2 danny green
and are high on hopkins cuz he beat pavlik, i honestly think RJ will outbox hopkins and jus be too fast for him and end up winning a UD.
cottos not a shot fighter he just had some tough fights .
I would only watch this fight if it were sold for free.50 or free.99.
I lost any and all interest when they announced this was PPV.
I mean, really.
MAYBE WE CAN HAVE DE LAHOYA TRINIDAD 2 ON THE UNDER CARD !! LMFAO …funny how alot of these post turn into a floyd blog!!! i am the geatest of all time !!! hahaha
jasz;
Who has ever called out Mayweather and Mayweather ducked? Who was he supposed to fight instead of Judah, Baldomir, ODLH, and Hatton? Who besides Castillo? Or Corrales? Or Chavez? Or Corley? Or Ndou? Who was he ducking?? Margarito made an offer one time, this when the only notable victory he had was against Cintron, and Mayweather got a better deal to fight the lineal champ who hadn’t lost in 8 years and had three quality wins. Did Cotto ever want to fight Mayweather? The answer is no. Oh, he ducked Mosley though. Wait, floyd called Mosley out in 99 and again in 2006. In 99 Mosley opted to fight John Brown instead, and in 2006 he whined about a toothache and said he needed a vacation. Judah was the undisputed welterweight champ and had beat every opponent he fought at WW when Floyd signed to fight him. Then he took on the lineal champ and the biggest payday. Then took on the toughest two opponents there were. These are the facts. On the other hand, you had Mosley calling out Manny and even offer him a 60/40 split and to fight at 143, Manny wouldn’t consider it and took on a shot Cotto instead. JMM has been wanting another fight and Manny has been ducking him. Mayweather wanted to fight Manny and Manny walked away. Thats three people that called Manny out in one year and Manny ducked them all and is now fighting Clottey. open your eyes buddy, Mayweather continues to fight the very best while your idol ducks all elite fighters.
yea, fighting the two opponents people give a chance of beating you is ducking the best. Because thats what Mayweather did in 2007. What fighter would have been favored or less of an underdog than either of those? NONE Pactards like to claim that Floyd is ducking the best, despite the fact that he consistently fights the best.
I STILL SUBSCRIBE WITH THE CLEVERNESS OF JOHN HOPKINS ALTHOUGH HE WAS DEFEATED BY ROY JONES 10 YEARS AGO. AT THE END OF 12 ROUNDS NOTHING SPECTACULAR KO SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED BUT A DECISION BY THREE JUDGES.

Hopkins developed and refined his skills better than Jones because Bernard is an actual boxer.Jones’ ability was founded almost entirely in his athleticism.Maybe if Roy also knew how to box,he could have extended his skills when his reflexes started to diminish but he never really learned how to be a boxer.it’s a shame really.Bernard is going to have to make sure he doesn’t knock Roy out on accident but he’s going to win this one for sure I feel.
Very pointless fight now. These two should have fough 9 or 10yrs ago when everyone wanted to see it.
They will court each other in the early rounds, kiss in the 7th, and finally intrude each other anally before Hopkins comes all over Jone’s face in the 12th.
