Froch’s fights to be on pay-per-view for the near future

By Sean McDaniel: For British boxing fans that want to see WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch’s fight against Mikkel Kessler on April 24th, they will have to watch it on Primetime television network. Since Froch’s bouts aren’t being shown on terrestrial television, the only option for fans is to see Froch on pay-per-view in the future unless some of the television stations change their mind and start showing his fights.

This is really a negative thing for Froch, because it likely means that he’ll be seen by far less people and it could potentially hurt him in becoming a huge star in the UK like Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan and Joe Calzaghe. Froch’s promoter Mick Hennessy said to the BBC Radio Nottingham, “For marquee fights right now, it seems pay-per-view is the only route. Everyone’s going to be disappointed that boxing’s not on terrestrial televisions, because it’s not free to air and it goes out to the masses.”

Previously, Froch’s fights have been shown on both the BBC and ITV. However, neither of them picked up Froch’s exciting fight against American Andre Dirrell last October. A lot of boxing fans missed out on seeing what turned out to be a very close fight filled with a lot of action.

Hennessy says “It’s just right in this day and age, because it’s hard for terrestrial TV to find the money that’s necessary to make a fight like this” [Froch vs. Kessler].

This is unfortunate because Froch’s fights need to be seen by the casual fans so that they can get for familiar with him as a fighter. Once Froch is better known, then a move to pay-per-view would seem like a reasonable option. But by having Froch’s fights on PPV before he’s even become a huge star, it seems to be a limiting factor in making him a huge star like Hatton in my view.

    This fight is double header

Froch Kessler and Ward Green for £12.95 which is better than box office

I just watched the old Froch-Pascal fight, and thats the first time I’ve seen “the Cobra”. I have to say he didn’t impress me at all. I had him winning 7 rounds to 5,but Pascal kept landing clean hard shots all night. If Abraham lands anything like Pascal was doing, I can’t see Froch staying on his feet. Really, Froch has no defense at all. None. He has a nice jab, and apparently some power, but I really don’t consider him an elite fighter, just seeing that perfomance.

    @ roadklill

Dirrell schooled Froch in rounds 4 & 11 – thats it. Watch the fight again.

Judges look for effective aggressiveness more so then punches landed etc- Froch was aggressive throughout and was effective in backing Dirrell up, making him hold on and run. Froch landed the most effective punches and was consistent in his work. Dirrell showed spats of aggression, did not back Froch up and his tactics were generally ineffective . His work was mostly inconsistent.

The fact there was so many close rounds means they go to Froch. See last paragraph.

I aint paying to see him fight. I know dirrell didnt throw enough punches but froch gotta gift at home. That fight showed everyone that he hasnt fought anybody with real skills and taylors on is way out anyway. I dont really like calzaghe but i would have loved to see him beat this chumps beak in

Why Sky box office has not picked up the Super 6 Tournament I will never know. One great fight after the next.

I thought Froch v Dirrell was pretty bad viewing, I was glad I got Abraham v Taylor though as I thought that was a great fight. Fighters like Dirrell just bore me especially when they’ve no pop in their punch.

It was a similar night to the Khan v Salita – was glad Mitchell v Prescott was there or I would have been mightly cheesed off paying £15 for a 1 minute fight.

The point is – if your making people pay you need a good undercard or two.
