Floyd Mayweather – Shane Mosley Official!

LAS VEGAS (February 3, 2010) – It’s official. Boxing’s biggest superstar and six-time world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather made his upcoming fight with welterweight mega-star and five-time world champion Sugar Shane Mosley, official today when he signed the contract that pits the two fighters against each other on Saturday, May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in a mega-bout which will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View®.

“This one is definitely for the fans as I wasn’t going to waste anyone’s time with a meaningless tune-up bout and asked to fight Shane immediately,” said Mayweather. “I have said ever since I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is one of the best, but come May 1, he still won’t be great enough to beat me..

“I have always wanted to fight Floyd and now it is finally coming true,” said Mosley, who signed his side of the deal last Friday in Las Vegas. “I am already in great shape and ready to show everyone on May 1 that I am stronger, faster and better than he is. I will have no problem beating him.”

In addition to the fight being one of the most competitive and talked about contests in each of the fighters’ careers, Mayweather and Mosley have agreed to Olympic-style drug testing for the fight.

“Floyd has been trying to make this fight for the last 10 years, so he is extremely excited about the opportunity to face Shane,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO, Mayweather Promotions. “He can’t wait to extend his undefeated record and perform at the highest level. More importantly, he is also happy to set the precedent for random blood testing in order to ensure fair and safe contests for all fighters.”

“When two champions of this caliber meet in the ring, you can expect nothing but excellence and that is what we are going to see on May 1,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO, Golden Boy Promotions. “Shane Mosley is one of the greatest fighters of this era and I commend him for not only agreeing to the fight against Mayweather, but also agreeing to participate in a testing process that can only help the integrity of the sport.”

“Mayweather-Mosley is a showdown of superstars that fans have been talking about for years”, said Mark Taffet of HBO Pay-Per-View. “It has all the elements of a pay-per-view mega-fight.”

A 1996 Olympic Bronze medalist for the United States, Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO’s) has since gone on to strike Gold in the professional ranks, winning six world titles in five weight classes to firmly establish himself as one of the most elite fighters of his era. With dominating wins over the likes of world champions Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton, Mayweather was on a meteoric rise to hall of fame greatness when he announced his retirement from the ring in 2008. But he left the door open for a return if the right challenge presented itself and after 18 months of a much needed physical and emotional break from the ring, he returned to boxing on September 19, 2009 with a dominating and spectacular victory over future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez.

A future Hall of Famer with five world titles to his name, Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s) has ruled the lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight divisions over his storied 16-year career and at 38 years old, the Pomona, Calif. native seems to be getting better and better as the years pass. Winner of seven of his last eight fights dating back to 2005, Mosley has defeated the likes of Fernando Vargas (twice), Luis Collazo and Ricardo Mayorga, but his most recent victory also was one of his most spectacular — a ninth round stoppage of Antonio Margarito in January 2009 to win the welterweight world title for the third time.

The 12-round welterweight battle is a highly competitive match-up that already has sports fans across the world buzzing to see two of the sport’s biggest names meet in the squared circle in the premier boxing match-up of 2010.

More information on Mayweather vs. Mosley, including ticket prices, HBO Pay- Per- View information and press tour dates and cities, will be announced shortly.

Doesn’t Pac has three loses? Why would one loss hurt Floyd?

  • Ken D. says:

It took sometimes for Mayweather to sign
the contract because he double check the
accounts and indeed theres not enough money
to fund a drug dealing/user father
who needs the money for his addiction, a uncle who
beat up a woman and needs money for bail out,
and they need money to cover up the expenses
    for the lawsuit of Pacquiao.

This fight will just for the money!!!!!

    - NOT FOR BOXING FAN BUT FOR HIS FUND -

    Hey Fan,
Us real fighters, real athletes, respectable fans of the natural human ability to excel, is just a short list of those who care if everyone is clean as athletes. You don’t? Then why don’t we just create robots and cyborgs and watch them play sports? I bet you loved the bionic man tv series too huh? Stupid. You’re not even respected as a Fan let alone anything else, gimmie a break.

  • Rog1er1231 says:

mayweathers gonna make this a boring fight.

  • pdock says:

I can’t wait for this fight!I think SM speed will be faster than ppl think.i believe if he hurt PBF,he will stop him. Floyd might make it a bored fight..throw a few punches here and there.and run..he won’t engaged Mosely and take a chance on being ko’d..i got mosely by ko,or close decision, but if he hurts F.M. and dnt stop him S.M might win a lop sided decision.PBF’s not going to give SM a chance to ko him..PBF can win by a dedcision if an old SM shows up..if a young SM shows up,it’s lights out for PBF..

  • mr.sweetsci says:

i’m glad that this fight is going to happen.i’m looking forward to it.

lex_f….do you run the state athletic commission of the state of texas? why are you saying that the boxers who fight in texas doesn’t have to do drug testing? you are such a joke.

  • elloco says:

Great fight this is. Great vs Great…for the WW title and P4P king.

  • Anonymous says:

if so then boxing no longer worth watching like wwe raw. A joke and a fake.

  • Fan says:

    Lex_fugitive,
Why is it that PBF fans use facts when they talk about boxing. You guys never attack Manny’s characters or pass any judgement on his actions outside the sport of boxing. Why is it that PBF want to clean up the sport of boxing. Boxing doesn’t need a change in its drug testing procedure. Boxing is the only sport in the world that doesn’t need random blood testing. We as boxing fans all know that our fighters are different then all the other sports. We trust our athletes. Look Evander, Vargaz, Roy Jones, James Tony, Eric Hall and Shane Mosley took steroids but it was without their knowledge. I trust Manny. He has an innocent face like A-Rod and Roger Clemens. See Manny is so innocent he filed a defamation of character law suit against Mayweather just like Roger Clemens. Manny isn’t going to be bulled into take a random blood test by Mayweather. Who cares if this blood test will establish the fact that both fighters are clean. Mayweather is a bully. Who does he think he is to clean up boxing. He is acting like we are in the steroid age or something.

lex. Are you saying freddie roach is a fraud and that he’ll allow his fighters to cheat just for… any reason you want to think?

  • lex_fugitive says:

Come on haters, lets hear the newest excuses! Michael Marley and his esteemed colleagues are being unusually silent on this. I still think Floyd is “balking” at fighting Mosley.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Yep, since Floyd came back, boxing regained relevance and attention on ESPN and other mainstream media. All the fights combined in his 21 month retirement combined had less PPv buys than Floyds last two fights. This included three Manny fights. Now, boxing is mentioned all the time and May 1 will bring in over 1.5 million PPV buys. UFC even changed their PPV event because they already saw what happened if they try to go head-to-head with the cash cow, Money Mayweather. It is sad though, that cheats are going to get exposed now. Like in baseball, no one wanted to believe it because they didn’t like the messenger in Canseco. Then a supposed p4p great fights a second tier fighter who has difficulty making 147 and is known for his lack of stamina and is only giving him a month and a half to make weight and train. Manny is staining the integerity of boxing, but as long as there are fighters like Floyd that take on the best consistently, boxing will remain strong. Manny still can’t explain why he won’t take any tests. And there is as much proof against Manny as there was against any baseball star a few years ago. Baseball implemented more stringent testing and I expect boxing to join the 21st century and implement at least a semi-legit testing procedure. Until then, Manny will fight in states like Texas where he won’t have to take any tests at all, blood or urine.

  • sky says:

since floyd came back, looks like boxing is not going to be same. He single handle move everyone around him the way he wanted and could careless if he destroy the boxing integrity. He accused fighters of being dirty without a shred of proof, smearing boxing commissioner credibility in handling high profile bouts. It’s hard to digest but it’s happening. Golden boy promotion, hbo, the big guys are actually behind him and let him handle them. Gosh! It’s amazing how money mayweather toy with these people. It’s very dissapointing and I trully feel boxing integrity and wrestling are thesame.

  • Fan says:

    TONE LOC,
I feel you this fight will be a much better fight. The Manny fight would have been easy work for PBF (Gatti vs PBF). Manny makes to many defensive mistakes for a skill counter puncher like PBF. Shane is one dimensional fighter but understand body position after throwing a punch. I really can’t wait for this fight. March 13 who is fighting that day again i fought. I prob be watchin March Madness that day any way.

  • TARO says:

AFTER THE FIGHT HIS NAME WILL BE CHANGED TO ” PENNY MAYWEATHER ” KNOCKED OUT ON THE 10TH ROUND.

  • TONE LOC says:

    MONEY MAYWEATHER BY KO!!!!
JUST TO PROVE U HES THE BEST!!
I WOULD RATHER SEE THIS THEN MAYWEATHER AND PACQUIO!! HE TOO SKILLED FOR THE PAC MAN

  • fletch says:

a few years to late but it will be great fight i think

  • Gene says:

He should earn the respect back of most fans if Floyd gets it on come May 1st. I hope he wins and eventually fight Pacquiao.

  • waltz says:

now this is the right news. at last! manny vs clottey at march, floyd vs shane at may. nice incoming fights. ^_^

  • Fan says:

    When Mayweather wins,

    1. Shane was to old
    2. Shane was rusty
    3. The fight was boring
    4. Shane threw the fight so Golden Boy can make money on the fight with Manny
    5. Mayweather used hand injections
    6. Shane got tired of chasing PBF

  • jacks says:

    Rematch clause?

  • Jwill says:

Well said scoopz. Everybody makes a big deal over Pacman’s wins after Floyd already mentally and physically drained two of them. Oscar and Ricky. Yes I said mentally drained too. Same can be said of what Margarito did to Cotto. He looked shot against Clottey. Not taking anything away from Pac, but don’t blow his wins up either. I box myself and its more mental than physical trust me. The fighters he fought were someone else’s leftovers…period. Let me see one of you haters figure Floyd out…in the ring if its so sweet! Call it running if you want, I call it smart boxing. Maybe Shane can do it, maybe Pacman can do it, but I know one thing, none of the big mouths on this blog can due 1% of what these WORLD CHAMPS do everyday! Have a little respect. You have no idea what it takes just to spar for 3 minutes! Congrats to Floyd for signing to fight Shane. Better and tougher fight than Pac. Shut a lot of people up. And if you think Floyd will pull out now, you all are real stupid. You want him to fight a legitimate welter? Pac is not, you’ll see vs Clottey. Yeah I said it…Clottey! In the meantime Floyd will fight a Welter weight legend. Fallback and enjoy the outcomes. Much love to all fighters…much heart and respect.

  • floj says:

i won’t believe the news not unless i see mayweather in the ring with mosley. Man! Blood is gonna come out on mayweather nose….

  • jreid says:

WELCOME to the top of the Welter Weight Division Floyd. PLEASE enjoy your short stay! OH I’m sorry you have a rematch clause when you lose. You may have to stay longer.

  • scoopz says:

so now who is the cherry picker in the pacman vs money debarco floyd fights a undefeated hatton a non weight drained oscar delahoya and (yes a mismatch) marquez and now the best welterweight in the world……and manny fights a over trained hatton with a terrible trainer a weight drained and older delahoya cotto who was never the same since being destroyed by margarito and now joshua clottey a fighter beaten by cotto post margarito…….floyd’s fights have been harder without question and yet hes a cherry picker

  • GoodYear2010 says:

    At last…it’s movin on
    semi finals
    1. Pac / Clottey
    2. Flo / Sugar

    Finals
    1. Pac / Flo

  • Dngr says:

May all the haters come up with reasons why floyd will pull out of this one or you Haters can start thinking of excuses to justify Mosley’s Defeat…

Can’t wait to read them… simply pathetic

  • RUBEE STARR says:
